county registrar voters as they get the recall. november ballots. plus, berkley police warning students and families as a child is almost abducted near their elementary school. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning far. >> good morning. it is tuesday, march 5th thanks for joining us for the kron. 4 morning news. it is election day. i'm john shrable in for reyna harvey this morning. thank you so much for joining us. let's start this morning with a look at the weather outside. we are seeing some fairly calm conditions as of right now, berkeley hills camera looking just fine with a little bit of cloud cover moving overhead. we have seen a few sprinkles this morning. that may be something you've noticed if you stepped outside to take the dog out. real quick, a little bit of snowfall still remains in the sierra, but north of i-80-i-80 is back reopen. so no worries there. and if you're heading to the snow this week, you got

plenty to enjoy it. a few showers to the north and the bay. today we have our best chance of sprinkles being in the north bay with the rest of generally seeing calmer conditions. temperatures right now are in the 40's to low 50's right now. hayward and alameda at 51 degrees conquered berkeley and oakland beach right at 50 san francisco sitting at a cool 52 later on today. expect temperatures to be in the low 60's for your daytime highs. slight chance of sprinkles. mostly santa rosa northwards, but some for the rest of us as well. i'll keep you updated in the rest of your forecast as we go for the roads this morning, things out there are rolling along just fine. we are seeing any backups of the bay bridge torl plaza. only 7 minutes to make your crossing right now. san mateo bridge also doing okay. things are rolling along at a good clip at 12 minutes while the richmond sandra fell only 7 minutes in pretty empty for you. making your crossing there and got looks like lane reconfiguration going on at the golden gate bridge that shouldn't be holding you up, though, about 20 minutes from novato to the tolls. or top

story this morning. today is election day in bay area. voters are busy dropping off their ballots, but voter turnout has been low so far locally kron four's. sara stinson reports from walnut creek with a check on the voter turnout in contra costa county. >> on the eve of super tuesday, many people dropped off their ballot after work in walnut creek. i care about the senate race. the california senate race a lot, but we always vote. but these voters appear to be the minority in contra costa county, according to the assistant registrar, helen nolan out of 700 voters, 127,000 ballots were received by monday afternoon. that's less than 20% of the total ballots, which leads nolan to predict an overall low turnout. we're expecting coming into this about 45 50% based on previous presidential primaries. >> but as a turnout right now, it looks like might get 35%.

>> nolan says there's a decline in voting statewide. she believes many are voting because of the lack of competition between idential nominees. >> but i would like to encourage people to respect your ballot in way the every race that's on the stabber. it it's going to with the exception of the measures is going to go to the top 2 november. people who did vote on monday expressed disappointment in the low turnout so far, some saying they hope people take the time to do it on super tuesday. your vote matters right now. everybody really should the voting. >> we live in a free democracy and voting is critical too, maintaining that democracy. and that's including the ones cast by the state's youngest voters. that's my first time voting 19 year-old devon stanton proudly cast his vote for the first time. >> he encourages all to do the same. matters. i think everybody. >> should have the opportunity

to vote. if they can go do it. >> that was kron 4 sarah stinson reporting a reminder that it's not too late to cast your vote. polls are open from 07:00am to 08:00pm today you can drop your ballot off at a secured box or you can have your ballot postmarked by today and delivered to your county within 7 days for your vote to still counts. meanwhile, these are the latest numbers on ballots returns in other bay area counties. almost all of them don't even get close to 20% except for murray. and sonoma and napa. governor newsom visited the bay area on monday urging everyone to vote and to give one final push to proposition one, which will provide more money for state mental health care services. kron four's tiffany justice brings us the story. >> the election is today ends and we're here mindful of the importance. the imperative of getting out to vote. >> monday, governor gavin

newsom was back in town to encourage voters to go out and vote. come to say he was joined by mental health workers in the s e i u 2015, california's long-term care workers organization to talk about proposition one. and that's the issue of homelessness. that's the issue. what's happened in the streets and sidewalks notice here in san francisco, but up and down the state of california. issues around mental health. prop one is a bipartisan bill that passed the house and senate proponents believe the prop will bring a major overhaul to california's mental health funding system building upon to recently established programs homekey in a room, key federal funding that has created 15,000 more beds for those in need >> for many, many years, the issue of homelessness and mental health has been left to the counties and the cities alone to deal proposition one will create 11,000 more residential units. it will allocate a billion dollars for

mother-in-law. pablo police say he is facing 2 counts of murder. the 2 women have been missing since september. the vo called police. instead, they took off in a car after an argument possibly headed to southern california while investigating the police. the case. police say they found the car in oakland and vote was seen driving it. police say they gathered more evidence and was involved in the disappearance and murders of his wife and his mother. their bodies have still not been found. the big story we first brought you on the kron 4 morning news yesterday. a group trying to recall alameda county district attorney pamela price dropped off boxes of signatures that the county registrar of voters in hopes of a special election kron four's ella sogomonian has the details. >> we call >> on monday, a group called save alameda for everyone or

safe announced they've gathered enough signatures to put a recall effort for alameda county district attorney pamela price. and then people are saying that no way he can not make it. >> and you don't have money and something happened. guess what we have collect it 123,000. we had 87 >> if the claim is true, that is well above the necessary 73,195, valid signatures to qualify for the fall election. the broad coalition behind the effort is made up of alameda county residents, business owners, victims and victims, families who think that prices to blame for rising crime because of what they call a failure to hold perpetrators accountable. brenda grisham with saving arrived at the rally on the front steps of alameda county courthouse on monday. >> escorted by heavily armed guards think she's been threatened since start of the recall effort. we shouldn't have to do this. >> but for the safety of our community, the safety our children, the safety of our

know today. redwood city police are investigating a fatal hit and run. that happened on saturday morning. a 38 year-old woman was hit along el camino real near brewster avenue, which is in front of sequoyah high school. for sonoma county. sheriff's deputies are in the hospital after shooting just outside of santa rosa. investigators say they were chasing the suspect on monday, fired shots at them. one is in critical condition from a head injury after shooting. deputies say the gunman crashed. they say he died at the scene. a new state bill wants to keep state and local dna programs to help identify missing people in place because it expires this year. the new bill would continue to financially support the programs through

fines, charge to criminals. so far, 106,000 cold cases have been solved. thanks to the program. officials with the acc you whether say that they are highly confident there will be no significant drought conditions in california until 2025. thanks to the more recent storms. 6 of california's more important reservoirs are currently asked or above capacity. >> i-80 is back open after days of heavy snowfall on monday, caltrans crews were. well. let's get a look at the weather now. so what we've got out there at the golden gate bridge is conditions that are dry this morning. few clouds moving in and out across the bay area. as of what we are seeing right now, what we've got on radar, we do have some showers to the north of us in the bay area. are relatively calm for a san francisco and the rest of the bay right now, most shower potential is going to be north of santa rosa.

radar is showing some snow north of i-80, but 80 itself is actually pretty dry as they mentioned. just a second ago, 80 is back reopened as of yesterday and for the bay area. what we have is quiet conditions with just a few passing clouds futurecast shows you some of those showers that we do have to the shower activity is going to be staying north of santa rosa today. the rest of us in the bay could see a few isolated sprinkles have been seeing a few of those already tomorrow. a better chance of showers, especially come tomorrow afternoon. we will see a chance of a few thunderstorms in sonoma county. here's one 45 pm tomorrow, as you can see, those little spots of yellow popping up really all in all the rest of the week's forecast is pretty calm. rainfall ahead of this point is going to stay less than a 10th of an inch for most of the bay area. saint rose of being the exception of that snowfall is going to stay north of donner summit. on i-80, we will the baby a 107 inch of snowfall on donner summit itself. but most of those inches to be reported will be up in the southern

cascades. as you can see as you head north on i-5 north of redding could run into fitness. few more snow showers up there. temperatures today are going to be in the low 60's san francisco in livermore at 61 degrees. well, oakland, hayward and fremont each at 62. a look ahead shows temperatures remaining pretty steady through the rest of this forecast. slight chance of a few sprinkles today evening. showers tomorrow, thursday and friday. some of your states to step yutside and are consistent sunshine. just a chance of a sprinkle or 2 come saturday. roadways this morning looking nice and dry. we're not seeing in the backups on the bay bridge. 8 minutes to make your crossing metering lights likely on in about 30 minutes. and that will start your slowdown process for the rest of the commute. san mateo bridge at 12 minutes while the richmond center fell at 8 minutes. well, looking at the golden gate, things rolling along just fine there as well. back to the news now. today, voters in 15 states will head to the polls today to cast their ballots and the republican

policies and better. meanwhile, activists in states like minnesota are pushing those headed to democratic primary polls today to vote uncommitted in protest of president biden's handling of the israel-hamas war in gaza. >> we all want this conflict to end as soon as possible. >> both biden and trump are both already looking ahead to a rematch in november. reporting in washington, reshad hudson, back to you. meanwhile, here at home, the candidates running for california's open u.s. senate seat are making their final push with perspective perspective. voters. >> adam schiff made his final bay area campaign stops on monday, shift toward small businesses in san francisco and in san jose where he was joined by mayor matt mahan. he talked about his platform and what he's promising if chosen to chosen by voters to be the state's next senator. >> we need to do so much more to bring people back downtown. i'm not only in san jose, but

it's 5.25, efforts to revive california salmon population took a big step back this week. more than 130,000 young chinook salmon released from siskiyou counties fall creek fish, hatchery. >> died in the klamath river. the california department of fish and wildlife says the

fish were killed by gas bubble disease, which likely happened as the fish trying to migrate through all infrastructure, removing the klamath river dams is part of governor newsom strategy to restore the natural habitat for the salmon. one has been already taken down and the rest are slated to be gone by november. the fall creek hatchery still holds more than 3 million healthy salmon. some of those are set to be released into the wild later this month. in the north bay teens at sonoma county's juvenile hall are now able to use a recording studio to make their own music. the center says it costs them. $25,000 to quit the studio with instruments, microphones and recording software and it will cost them $150,000 a year to keep it open by hiring producers and buying more instruments. one person is almost $500,000 richer and solano county this morning, according to the state's lottery website, a winning

>> welcome it is 5.29 on this tuesday march 5th, super tuesday today. and let's get a look outside this forecast today is offering up good weather to be take here. walk over to your local polling place in your neighborhood. we got quite hour right here with a little bit of cloud cover over we're not talking any fog this morning, but we are talking a few isolated sprinkles. most rainfall today is going to be situated north of santa rosa up across the areas like mendocino and trinity counties with some snowfall remaining north of i-80 today. in fact, several more inches of it. once you head up into areas like plumas county. now radar is showing you here in the bay relatively quiet skies. again, like i mentioned, north bay has our best chance. a few sprinkles later on. temperatures are really mild low 50's to kick off the morning for a lot of us mountain view in san jose

ballots. letters that you get in the mail in ballots? well, they have been returned and usually right around this time, john, they get about 20%. so a lot lower and they think all together it might be around 40% when usually it should be around 50%, even on super tuesday. so with a lot of issues out there, they're

hoping people still will realize today is super tuesday and that they are registered. voters are ready and they will come out to their precinct and vote. it's going to take several days, obviously, to ratify several days to possibly weeks to ratify the election. that, of course, they are waiting for the backbone of democracy, of course, the voters. so they're hoping people will turn out. you come down here and you can vote. this begins at 7 o'clock in the morning. and this is i registrar of voters in santa clara county e resolved, including, as you mentioned, john, the senate seats. back to you. >> keeping a very close eye on that all day long today. election day be here. capitol reporter ay-tawn wallace spoke with california secretary of

state shirley weber about what her office is doing to ensure the election is secure. >> we have been very busy, california secretary of state shirley weber joining us for a one-on-one interview speaking directly to californians as we approach election day, we made it so can being it. most folks have had their ballots for weeks. turn it convenient. she says noting ballots have been mailed directly to the state's 22 plus million registered voters for your vote to count. you must sign the back of the return envelope from there. you have a few options. you can drop off your ballot and official drop box location or you can send it back in the mail. >> but if you do that, it must be postmarked no later than election day itself, march 5th. >> weber minds, voters. they can track their ballot by signing up for the where's my ballot feature on the secretary of state's website. those who have not yet registered can still do so in person at the polls on election day. as for the big question, what's being done to ensure the election is secure?

we have trained our folks on on every signature. we have special equipment. this seems like the something is one with the signature. >> so we check every ballot that comes through specifically. she says staff members check the signature on the back of the return envelope and compare it with the original voter registration signature. should there be a major discrepancy? staff will investigate further and may reach out to the voter. on the technology side. weber stresses every tabulation machine has been tested and retested. we check of several different times to make sure that it's correct. we also open up our offices, your regular registrar of voters office. they have ways in which you can observe what is taking place. you can observe the ballots coming in. so we do all of those kinds of things to hopefully to assure people that the process is safe and that's reassuring to a whole lot of folks are final message to voters. we make sure that every voter's vote counts. and so i think that's extremely important to try not to wait and procrastinate because, you know, your ballot is important. voice is important. you probably made a decision which are going to do anyway. so just get it done.

and should you decide to vote in person? the polls close at 08:00pm as long as you're in line before then you will be allowed to vote reporting in sacramento. eytan wallace. >> kron 4 news. >> a reminder you can join us tonight for live results from around the bay area of the state and the country. a special edition of kron, 4 news bringing begins tonight 8 o'clock in prime time. state legislatures are teaming up with attorney general to keep dna programs that are responsible for solving cold cases and identifying missing persons in place. kron four's dan kerman reports. >> the families and friends and loved ones of more than 2000 individuals. have some answers. they have some closure. attorney general rob bonta says that's due in large part to state and local dna programs that have been funded by the fines charge to criminals. that funding sources put in place 20 years ago through a voter approved initiative known as prop 69. but it's to expire this year.

now bonta in state legislators are behind a new bill to keep that funding source in programs. use this technology to do many. thanks identifying missing persons solving child abduction cases analyzing rape and assault evidence kits helping local law enforcement identify samples collected crime scenes exonerate innocent individuals testify in court and further advance research and developments in forensic science. bonta says the 12 million dollars generated each year for state and local crime labs has resulted in the solving of 106,000 cold cases and the identification of thousands of missing persons through the missing person's dna program. there's nothing any of us can do to undo the harm or bring back a loved one. gone too soon. we know that. but our hope is that by seeking justice for those who have

who've gone missing or who have been killed by seeking justice for families last sometimes more questions than answers. we can bring some semblance of peace that we can help bring some healing some closure to their lives. if passed, the bill will supply a steady source of funding to keep those dna programs in place. dan kerman kron, 4 news. 5.37. now redwood city police are investigating a hit and run collision that killed a woman. >> it happened sometime between one 32. 45 am saturday morning along northbound al camino real near brewster avenue that's in front of sequoyah high school. police say the victim is a 38 year-old woman. her name has not yet been released. anyone with information is asked to contact redwood city police. now to a developing story. we first brought you on the kron 4 morning news yesterday for sheriff deputies were injured in the shooting just outside of santa rosa. and one of them

is in critical condition at the hospital. kron four's rob nesbitt reports from where the pursuit ended. >> the shooting between the gunman in the sheriff's deputies ended in a crash behind me. you can see the fence that the suspect drove his vehicle into. police are trying to figure out if it was the crash or the shooting that killed the suspect. flashing blue lights lit up several streets in west santa rosa monday morning. according to the sonoma county sheriff's office, deputies responded to reports of a man holding a rifle on todd road. >> when they arrived on scene just after midnight, the suspect fled in a vehicle at a pursuit occurred. gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and police injuring 4 deputies. according to sheriff ed ian groom to with hand injuries. one shot in the leg and one deputy in critical condition from a head injury. as you can imagine, i'm concerned about my and your deputies. >> hope they all make a full and speedy recovery. this has been chaotic incident after shooting at police. the gunman drove away and crashed his vehicle in stony point road and was pronounced dead at the scene. timothy demick lives by

where the crash occurred. it was that i woke up at one 30. >> to the sound of it, there was heavy round. it. pettit is gunfire basically on todd road, we saw we heard the shooting and crash under investigation by the santa rosa police department to sheriff vehicles and the suspect's vehicle were towed away from the scene by early afternoon. in stony point road is reopened to traffic. >> officer patricia 7 says other roads with the pursuit occurred will remain closed while investigators search for evidence crime scenes to be investigated and the evidence technicians started at this location and are working their way back. >> to the area's todd road and as stanish avenue, according to the sonoma county sheriff's office, body camera footage worn by the deputies involved will be released once it's available reporting in santa rosa. i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. >> in the south bay and iconic diner is back open in san jose with a fresh look after sayfng fenced off for 4 years, the

fact, we should be seeing relatively dry weather on roadways as we make our way through the forecast today at lake tahoe. this is your incline village right on the lake right there. live view outside right now, already less stormy looking in that it was yesterday at this time, the parking lot. there is clear right off and we will be seeing a few lingering snow showers really north of i-80 all zoom in. first on what we're seeing around the lake tahoe region, north of donner summit is where you're really running into. still some heavy snowfall. this is as you head up towards milner role, quincy spots really to the north of the most reversed areas of the sierra areas like lake tahoe near 70, actually going to be fairly dry today. radar for the bay area shows also a forecast for us. a few sprinkles mostly north of santa rosa. today, a look at futurecast shows. rainfall continues. once you get up in the banda sea know and lake counties and even areas as far south as windsor. but santa rosa is about the southern point of most of those heavier showers as we will be looking at the bay area, staying

mostly dry tomorrow, a chance of some afternoon thunderstorms for the north bay, mostly just sonoma county yet again, while the rest of us will be seeing an isolated chance of an afternoon shower remaining, very brief. so you get the point. this week's forecast is definitely taking a step back as far as activity goes today and tomorrow, santa rosa could see another half an inch of rainfall. the rest of us will be anywhere between just a trace. a drop of water, too, or a 10th of an inch of rain for most spots. as for what we can expect in the sierra, we will see a few more inches of snowfall. mostly north of i-80. if you are traversing i-80 don't be surprised if you run into a few flurries. but 80 is going to have no issues handling that. now that caltrans has roadways back open high temperatures today are going to be back in the low 60's. very similar forecast yesterday. oakland hayward fremont each at 62 while san jose at 63 the rest of this forecast stays pretty level temperature wise. we remain in the low 60's all the way through tomorrow. we will have our best chance of showers for this week's forecast thursday
