>> our top story this half hour. a shoplifting investigation in alameda leads police to an extensive fencing operation. the bus resulting in the recovery of more than $85,000 in stolen merchandise and cash as kron four's philippe djegal reports. one arrest so far has been made. >> $75,000 in stolen merchandise. more than $10,000 in cash and several stolen cars recovered. plus one arrest and i expect more

arrests to before coming out me. the police investigators are still documenting the inventory recouped in a nearly month-long retail theft operation. chief shot joshi says this case started in early february. that's when the shoplifting incident was reported at old navy and the island's south shore shopping center. >> work various leads and were able to identify a location in oakland where we operation a fencing operation was occurring during the course of the investigation. chief joe, she says the stolen stuff was traced to a residence in oakland. >> there investigators tied stolen items from multiple retailers in several cities to an elaborate fencing. operation, the clothes and other items were still tagged and on hangers ready for resale. i think it's important too. >> have a multi pronged approach to this very significant issue. that's a going on throughout the region. the state and the

country. and that approach includes holding thieves accountable by making arrests and recovery merchandise. but also going after the sellers running the fencing operations. >> chief joe, she says this case he's yet to be presented to the alameda county district attorney's office and then dissipates additional arrests. philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> another disturbing incident unfolded at last night's walnut creek city council meeting council members and community members there had to endure 2 minutes of anti semitic. hate speech during the public comment portion of the evening. who did not identify himself, took to the podium at the start of the public comment. time and he spewed hateful comments aimed at members of the jewish community, including at jewish council member kevin wilk. this follows a similar incident just a couple weeks ago where a guy who identified himself here as scotty rattled

off hateful comments while wearing a shirt with the words white power on it. he also slammed city leaders for ending virtual public comments in response to the most recent incident. the council called the comments horrific and said the person who spoke is not a member of the community. they released a statement that rpreads in part, quote, that creek is an inclusive community, that values and promotes the diversity of our residents, including the ability to observe their chosen religion. they go on to say while we will always respect the public's right to free speech. we also condemn hate speech at every opportunity and did so last night. >> a man was stabbed to death in san francisco last night. it happened around 8.30, on hyde street in the tenderloin. police say when they got to the scene, they found a man with several stab wounds. he died there at the scene. no word tonight on a suspect. >> in the south bay, 2 men were arrested in connection to 2 separate homicides in san

jose. another is still on the run tonight. according to police, the most recent incident happened just last week. police say denzel brown was arrested after a man was shot to death inside a car on moore park avenue near castle would drive. police are also looking for the man here on your screen who they say is also connected to the shooting. san jose police arrested juan perez after they say he shot 3 people at a vigil on story road several weeks ago. 2 women and a man were shot. the man did not survive. >> take a good look at your screen right now. police are looking for this man who they say exposed himself to folks outside shopping center's in antioch and brentwood. police say the suspect typically wears a mask and has a tattoo that looks like a cross on his right arm and a script on the back of his left arm. the details of the cases were not specified, but officers want

to remind the community too, be aware of your surroundings. and if you have any information on who this person is, you are asked to contact brentwood police. >> the university of california system says it is seeing a boost in student enrollment after years of decline. they say due to the pandemic, the university says applications have gone up by one and a half percent compared to last year. college officials say the growth is being driven by transfer students. california residents and students from underrepresented groups. the college says it is also seen a 9% increase in transferred missions. something it credits to an easier transfer process. you see also reports nearly 50% of first-year applicants were from underrepresented groups. the school credits the rise to its combination affordability, which includes its, quote, generous financial aid package is and to the high quality education.

>> let's get you a check of your 4 zone forecast. taking a live look from our sutro tower camera looking at alcatraz and we've got some. nice skies out there, a little bit of clouds, but nothing too terrible. court today not too bad, not quite spring yet, but >> getting warmer it is rainbow season here in the bay. not sure about tahoe, though. >> stuff too much snow to see much of anything else. they're like. yeah, that amazing. watching the models and all the snow. they were forecasting this past weekend. well, that all came true. some of the mountain tops 10, even 12 feet of snow and yeah, just piled up there in the high sierra nevada. now we need some clear conditions really bring a chance to get up there and enjoy. still a couple of scattered snow showers up there right now. and you see some lightning strikes in the foothills of the sierra nevada. it's going to play out overnight tonight. we could even see a little more wrap-around moisture up there again for tomorrow. so i think overall, though, the trend will be towards some drying weather in the high country and even here in the bay area

right now, an active afternoon. we've had some thunderstorms erupting around the bay area, too. and some lightning strikes popping up outside. some storms still continuing role, especially in the east bay. we've had some heavy rainfall there. in fact, this one now near castle valley. you've got to crow canyon there. line moving right through the center of the yellow there that as been some heavier amounts of rain moving on through in some cases about half an inch per hour. but they're been higher rates from some of these storms, south bay down to street level. you can see some of those scattered showers continue to move on by. they'll diminish as we head throughout the night tonight. still a possibility that isolated thunderstorm as we head into the early evening and then we start to see those clouds begin to part of the energy. we lose some of that because the setting sun, all of a sudden things begin to quiet down. that is going to set the stage for what looks like. yes, if you can believe it a dry day tomorrow, some sunshine make a return to the bay area and that will lead us into at least a couple of days of some dry weather. after that, we'll start talking about some a light precipitation. again, no big storms on the rise, but we'll

have more on that weekend forecast coming up in just a little bit. all right. thanks, lawrence. now to a follow-up on a story we told you about last week suggesting a panera bread franchisee who also is one of governor newsom's campaign donors inappropriately benefited from an exemption in the state's new fast food minimum wage law. >> well, tonight that owner says he we'll raise the minimum wage for his employees after all, california zoo $20 minimum wage for most fast food chains is set to take effect next month. an exception had been main specifically for chains that sell that that baked bread and sell it as a stand-alone item. >> many have said that includes panera bread. a bloomberg article, however, suggested that that exemption was made because newsom donor and panera bread franchisee billionare greg flynn had expressed concern. it would hurt the 2 dozen panera bread franchises he owns across the state. outraged republicans quickly demanded an ethics investigation. but since the

story broke, newsom and flynn strongly denied ever discussing the minimum wage law together. >> with newsom noting his legal team believes panera bread is actually not exempt. but flynn says exempt or not. he promises to now increase the minimum wage to 20 bucks an hour at his california panera. bread restaurants. attorney general rob bonta is demanding meta better protect its users. you know, facebook and instagram. he says 40 other attorneys general sent a letter to the tech giant urging the company to review its data security practices. botta says there's been an increase in account hijackings in recent years. the takeovers its procedures when it comes to handling takeovers, including an increase in staffing that can respond to the hacks. the coalition also wants to remind users to use

complicated and or unique passwords for all other accounts. >> at our nation's capital, a bipartisan group of lawmakers wants to force big changes to the social media giant tiktok 10 republicans and 10 democrats have come together with a bill aiming to separate tip-top tiktok from its chinese parent company bytedance. the bill's backers say this isn't a ban on the popular app, but it essentially is because it would prevent american apps tours from carrying tech talk if it stays under its current ownership, it's not just ban on several government devices for federal government employees. not sure that the president was president doesn't have a of eyes. >> as the general election nears, some lawmakers worry china has already used tiktok to influence elections and other countries. if the bill passes bytedance would have 6 months to divest itself from tiktok. each day artificial intelligence is changing the

california. numerous thunderstorms popping up around the bay area, very active along the peninsula, the south bay this afternoon. in fact, those lightning strikes continuing and there's a flood advisory that also continues in parts of the east bay to fremont hayward pleasant in union city under a flood advisory until just after 7 o'clock for tonight. that area of low pressure to move out of town and you can already see high pressure begins to sneak in here. here comes that ridge that is going to bring some dry weather as the jet stream going to start lifting. that means we've got some nice weather ahead back tomorrow. going to be nice day outside. we're talking about some sunshine and temperatures begin to warm some 60's by tomorrow afternoon. 63 in san jose. 64 in concord. is high of 66 degrees in santa rosa next couple days. finally, some dry weather looks like as we get to saturday couple clouds, slight chance of a few showers. i think a better chance showers in the afternoon on sunday. dry weather on monday course. we spring forward. we're talking spring, right, we screen for this weekend and i like that because i lose an hour of sleep a night. really kind of relish my sleep. but yeah, i think you're like most people
