tv   KRON 4 News at 3pm  KRON  March 7, 2024 3:00pm-4:01pm PST

3:00 pm
>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. >> we're following a pair of breaking news stories now at 3, including a police pursuit of a murder suspect ending with one person dead and highway 5.80, near san leandro partially shut down and trouble after takeoff at sfo. a tire flying off this united flight moments after it left the airport at sfo. thank you for joining us here during kron for news at 3. i'm just being justine waldman will begin at sfo, which is where we find kron four's. dan kerman. he has the very latest details on what the situation is at sfo right now. we understand and the plane did go to lax and that it landed safely and the planes are allowed this united flight. this type of plane can land without a tire. let us know the latest.
3:01 pm
>> well, united like 35 was scheduled for osaka, japan that left here from the international terminal at 10. 53 this morning. all is well, but shortly after takeoff, one of those wheels fell off, came crashing down into an employee parking lot just north of this location, crushing a few of the the plane was then diverted to los angeles international airport. as you mentioned, it does need all of its tires to land. but they did land this plane with one less tired than need it. we spoke with an aviation expert about how something like we'll falling off, could happen. >> put the whole wheel assembly on a on an airplane when they change the charge and it's possible i hope i don't want to say it because it's very embarrassing. they may not have secured the real property we'll know about.
3:02 pm
this definitely find out. the good thing is that nobody got hurt. crew did excellent job so that the air traffic control. >> well, the captain says this is probably a 500 pound wheel assembly that fell. he said, obviously, that certainly not a good day for united airlines. you know, we've had several incidents recently on another flight. we had issue with the wing. we know all about that door that blew out of that alaska flight. so definitely not a good period of time for the aviation industry. the captain that we spoke with has talked on and on about how airline maintenance is just not what it used to be. much of the airline maintenance that goes on except for the localized maintenance airports. the big maintenance goes on overseas. he says as a result, airlines don't have as much say so as to what is going on. he believes it's going out to the lowest bidder. and as a result, maintenance is not what it used to be. again, we
3:03 pm
don't know what caused this. we'll the ball off. but at this point, we know the plane did land safely at lax where it was diverted and passengers are now put on another plane to continue their journey to osaka, japan. that's the latest live at sfo. i'm kerman kron. 4 dan, thank you. we're going go now to kron four's, rob does, but he just took a look at the damage. >> that that what dan kerman was saying was a 500 possibly pound wheel that possibly fell off this united plane. so dan told us that and i will go to rob. this is new video now into our rob, these cars got crushed. >> mean, so it was kind confusing when you first arrive at the airport to figure out where these cars were. but the rental car area at sfo, there's employee parking lot behind that. you have to have obviously concerning clearance as unemployed to get in there. we were allowed walk in and i felt that company that you're seeing now, the actual vehicle
3:04 pm
themselves, it was blocked off with caution tape. there were 2 cars that were really bad. the damage one with the entire back window that would out in the other car parked beside it had damage. 2, it side view mirror and the side of the vehicle. and you can also see that that right behind the vehicle as well. that was completely bent to one side. now, there were no police around the area. that was a big confusing. we didn't see any investigators and no tire, but the security guard that let me and did tell me that those were the vehicles that were damaged from the fire. police confirmed that for me, but really no investigation. investigation happening around the card and i was able to find the unfortunate employees, the either. but you can see but fire coming from the plane up above. it's going to cause some. the run. and it's the vehicle that you can see from that video just seen. >> rob, can you tell how many cars were damaged? we were how
3:05 pm
to 2 of them to be part and then the fence right next to them. yeah. do you know at this point of these employees have been notified about what happened to their cars today? >> i talked to some employees who were just going back to their vehicles are there's a bus stop nearby where way get dropped off. and a lot of people, as you can imagine, we're seeing these 2 cards and going wow, what happened. i kind of explain to them that it happened because of the plane fire, but none of them actually own the vehicle. why did not find the employee who are having a very bad day and you can imagine, yeah, that's going to have a tough time getting home and no sign of the times. >> no, i didn't fire. that's what i thought was strange i was expecting to come on the kind >> scene of an investigation of and they're clear caution tape around the bend. >> so that we believe the fence alone, but no actual positive around the vehicles and felt good walk right up to educate people. like i did get
3:06 pm
the cell phone video. i talked to at certain play aviation about how the incident happened, how we had the alaskan airlines flight headed or fall off and now a tide falling from the united plane and the concern in the industry about how this happening. more and more with clearly now functions of airplanes. and he there's a port since earned. but if the ntsb that will now be taking over this investigation, wanting to find the higher figure out why a lot in the first place. yeah, they're going to need that higher for that part of the investigation to have they removed it. >> did it fall and then bounce off? i'm rob nesbitt live for us there at sfo with this new video now of the cars that were damaged after this wheel fell off of a boeing triple 7, a united flight that took off from sfo this morning. it was headed to japan. the plane after this tire from the left rear side came right after takeoff. the plane then did divert to lax, landed safely. as far we know now, no one on board the plane was hurt.
3:07 pm
there were about 250 people on board 235 customers. 10 flight attendants for pilots. the plane, according to united, does have 6 tires as part of its a main landing gear. and it is designed to land safely with missing or damaged tires. so that was important part to know we have several reporters there at the airport for us gathering some new details and video that we're going be showing through you throughout the hour here of the plane taking off. you can see the tire coming off the plane and then we also video of it landing safely. now that new video that rob was able to show us of the cars in the fence damage badly damaged there at the employee parking lot at sfo. we're working to find out where that tire is. so that's one of the breaking news stories that we're following. there is not about vote. the other comes out of the east bay where a police investigation shut down both directions of highway 5.80, near san leandro. earlier this afternoon. >> kron four's gayle ong is in the area right now. joins us now live with the latest details here. and as we hit
3:08 pm
the evening commute here, we do want to talk about one part that police investigation was led out to all this. but people also wanting to know is 5.80, back open in both directions. >> yes, just seen. i'm standing here on 5.80, in san leandro right before the benedict drive exit 2 lanes remain closed on this westbound lane the eastbound lane. all remains are open. it's a little slow going in this area, but it is active investigation. i am steps away from where detectives are. we want to give you a closer here is video from earlier where they are focusing their investigation on this side. and so what we know so far, this update coming from chp in the last hour and a half is that this all started in pleasanton. one pleasanton police was. in pursuit of a known murder suspect. and then that ended up on 5.80. so that is when chp got involved and that incident ended here close to ryan standing on 5.80, in san leandro. here's more about
3:09 pm
the suspect. we're told the suspect. crashed the vehicle and died of apparent gunshot here's more from the suspect vehicle while in pursuit crash. and at that point, there was a high risk staff as well as the standoff. >> for approximately 30 minutes >> with the combined efforts of all allied agencies. it was determined that the suspect had to come to his own. >> and back here live on 5.80, where 2 lanes remain closed. lane one 2. and i want to sling it over here because this is what's going on as we speak. we have a team of investigators just taking measurements here on the side of the freeway, stretching all the way from here and then all the way, a few feet away from me on the other side. and then if i take it over here, here's a some of the lane. no slow going here. if this is part of your evening commute, this is 5.80, in san leandro right before the benedict drive at
3:10 pm
set. so that is the situation no timeline on when these lanes will be fully reopen. live in san leandro, gayle ong kron. 4 news. gayle, thank you. >> all right. we just have learned now that 52% of the ballots have been counted for prop one. that's the statewide behavioral health services program and bond measure. if passed, this measure would partially reform how the government funds mental health services in the state. opponents of this measure say that the bill will cost taxpayers too much for not enough results as we can see here. it's still fifty-fifty with about 1.9 million in each direction and only 40 52% of the votes have been counted. so far. we're going to continue to fol ow the results for prop one for you here on kron. 4. we're also following the weather and how beautiful it is outside today with this live look outside across san francisco. the sun is really dominating the forecast for today. and tomorrow piles has all those details now. yeah, we're in a kind nice little
3:11 pm
pocket right now is a beautiful vistas are back in view. we've got the blue skies out there as we take a live look from the east bay, the east bay, where we have some of that wild weather yesterday with hail and heavy rain. >> none of that today. instead the east bay is looking out forasome nice low 60's today. 59 degrees in san francisco. you can see up in the north bay. saint rose is up to 64. we have a little bit of wind out of the coast. you can certainly see that point rays about 25 miles per hour. san francisco's just picked up a little bit, too, in the teens out of half moon bay, but a low pressure that caused all the trouble is headed out. and now you can see we've got high pressure that's moving in. and that is what is letting us get some of this dry, sunny, lovely condition going. so that will be the story today into tonight. should be a really nice night out there and also into tomorrow. then things are going to start to change a little bit as we work our way towards the weekend. so after we get through friday, that's we're going to start to see this weather turn a little bit more like we were right. we're going to be a little bit rainy, especially for our saturday morning. and then we're going to see a little bit of a break saturday night and then by sunday,
3:12 pm
fortunately, look out for more showers sunday, monday, tuesday and a little bit of sierra snow as well. so the weather on a little bit of a break, but certainly going to be picking up and getting a little bit busier as we head towards the weekend. i'll be back in just a bit. we'll talk about that with your extended forecast. back to kayla. thank you. we do now know the name of the woman shot to death last month in pinole. the contra costa county coroner has identified her as 30 year-old brittany league discipline. all she allegedly was shot by her ex-boyfriend, jeffrey kendall at her home on summit drive in the morning of february. 16th. the 2 did share a four-year-old child together. officers found and arrested kendall after searching for a few days. he's now being held at the martinez detention facility on homicide and domestic vio

3:15 pm
>> we continue now to follow the breaking news out of sfo. were tire fell off a united airlines flight as it was departing sfo later this morning. it did damage several vehicles that were parked in the employee parking lot. and for more now on what has gone on so far today, we're joined on the phone by scott miller. he's an aviation expert and a lecturer at san jose state university. thank you for joining us. my pleasure. thank you for having i just want to start with why do you think this tire fell off the plane? >> well, its going to be one of 2 things. obviously, the triple 7 is complying for a long time. united airlines is operated them for a long time, either a catastrophic failure of some tight that allowed that tire to fall off or perhaps a maintenance was performed on it that may not have been done properly. and that led to the tire falling off. >> and so the plane then to
3:16 pm
have to divert to lax. why did the play not turn around and just land back at sfo. we talked to ken wayne. he flies plans as a hobby and part of his job here at kron 4. >> and he was thinking that the plane so heavy because it was headed to japan and that it probably try to let go of some fuel and that lax might have been probably the safest, biggest airport that could handle a plane the size and an emergency of the situation that that basically sums it up. whenever you have an aircraft that's flying to another continent. >> it's going to have obviously a lot of fuel. and in an emergency situation you can turn around and land right away. but it has to be a really dire emergency. in all honesty just out higher falling off that something of concern but will go ahead and take the time. make sure we're doing everything properly. get the weight down. and since get rid of the few anyway, it made more sense to go down to la for a couple
3:17 pm
reasons, actually, to a complete the landing. mayor, as i understand it, passengers re accommodated on another flight and most likely united already had an airplane staged in los angeles. so that was possibly the least disrupting to the customers that yeah, we're watching video of the plane landing at lax. united told us that these plans are designed to be able to land with missing or damaged wheels. >> i'm wondering when this tire fell off during takeoff. what happened in the cockpit? what kind of warnings would the pilots be getting and how they then notify that to the passengers today even know at the time that something was wrong. >> most we don't have an actual warning. that tells us a tires falling off. that most likely there was damage to also the brake system and the anti system. and that will give us some mornings and that if you get warnings like that on takeoff, want your airborne. that's pretty indicative. you've got serious
3:18 pm
problem with your landing gear. that's probably what the crew saw. >> heavy and how big are those tires? because we had some video now into our news room of the damage that this tire did as it fell off. it landed at an employee parking lot. it damaged several cars there they look rush like the whole back sides are all smashed in the back. windshield is totally cracked and smashed and one of the fence is there for the back of the parking lot is also bent over. how big are these tires? how heavy are they and how high up do you think the plane was at that point? just the physics of what would happen that tire was going on. and then i've another tire question. but we'll start there. yes, sir. those tires. >> they the main landing. gear tires. about 5 and a half feet tall. as you're standing on the ground, i honestly don't know the way. but if i had yes, i'd say on the order of 1000 pounds. and the other thing is they're pressurized to about 200 p s i keeping in
3:19 pm
mind your car tires, pressurized to about 40. that's because of extreme weight that these tires. after perry's it came off the airplane as the gear was being retracted, probably 4, 3, 4, 100 feet up in the air. so it it had a good of steam when it came down employee park. >> our rob nesbitt was there. he got that video for us of the crushed cars when he went to go check it out. he said to the tire was not there. so that higher wind just like land on the cars. you could possibly bounce up and then land somewhere else. >> yeah. without high pressure that i just referred to, that fire will have a lot of bounce to it, especially coming down from that height. >> so what do you make of all these issues that have been happening flights recently? we have that door plug blow off. now we have a tire falling off of me. what is happening with the maintenance and the safety protocols getting these plans up into the air. >> well, believe it or not, with the exception of the alaska airlines max. 9 door
3:20 pm
plug incident. we've been having normal levels of minor maintenance issues on aircraft, the amount of flying to these airplanes do day in and day out. it's not uncommon to have these minor issues. and although i'm very fortunate, it is very fortunate. no one was hurt in this incident. the risk was there in the big picture. it's it's minor. that's not to say it doesn't need to be addressed. most certainly does. but what we're seeing is just increased focus on all of these incidents that normally occur because of air transportation and the match troubles. and of course, the door plug coming out. that's just put focus on it. so the level of incidents where we have increased, what's increased is the focus. >> so they are about 250 people on board there. as you said, as far as we know right now, none of them are hurt. they landed safely at lax. a we're going to be put on another plane to take them to their final destination of japan. there. do you feel safe getting on an airplane?
3:21 pm
>> i absolutely do. and in tell you a little secret in addition to teaching at san jose state on a commercial airline pilot. i'm about to board a flight from maui to sacramento right now. >> so what would you do if this happened on your flight at the tire blew off. >> we would follow the state of procedures that we have. we would make all the appropriate notifications and then we would land the airplane as quickly and as safely as we could. and i'm quite confident we would have a perfect outcome. >> well, do you think that what they did here is considered a perfect outcome? >> yes, no one was injured. the plane made a normal landing. a taxi to the gate doesn't get much more normal map. >> scott miller, we appreciate your time. you're an aviation expert. also a commercial pilot about to take off right now and also a lecturer at san jose state university. really appreciate time. i learned a lot. thank you. >> my pleasure, anytime. thank you very much. >> all right. we'll be touching back on that story throughout the hour here on kron 4. and here we're taking a live look at sfo. we i have
3:22 pm
not heard about any like delays or at the airport or cancellations because of this incident. they did have to a close a runway for a little while to clean up some debris, debris. but all the operation seemed to be normal at sfo. and so we'll check in now as we took a look at that live picture there and on the sun that's out there today. least we have the weather on our side, but flying tires are. how are not great in the forecast, right? i'm glad no one was hurt. that's that's the best news out of that story. >> a live look outside right now. blue skies gorgeous out there. a little wind. you see the flag kind of waving right there. a little wind, especially out at the coast. temperatures are really nice. if you are in spots like livermore, concord, san jose were in the 60's. hannah rose up to 64 degrees. but pretty much everywhere getting in on some of the sunshine as we take a live look at stormtracker 4. you can see it is pretty quiet today. certainly quiet compared to where we were yesterday. and as we zoom out here, you see the big picture, a little high pressure offshore. that's what's giving us some sunshine. another low pressure moved on overs, bring some rain to places like arizona. but we do have another system
3:23 pm
really close here. and that is going to head our way as we get into saturday and then our rain chances kind of go up as we head into sunday monday and even tuesday, as you can see after that, it looks like we do dry out for a little bit. but let's take you through this just to show you kind of how this plays out. so this is this evening. looks great. tomorrow looks great. and then we have this front that's going to slide in saturday morning. it's the tail end of the front. doesn't look like we get a whole lot out of that bahrain in the bay area or snow but will be a little bit of rain, particularly for the north bay. then we have another system coming in on sunday, but is really the one more monday to tuesday that they think is going to bring us some meaningful rain. this is saturday morning. so it's not much right. and then as you can see as we get into sunday monday into tuesday, this is when we're looking out for the bigger totals. we could see some meaningful rain that we're going to be talking about next week. great, especially as we get into monday and tuesday. but tomorrow, another beautiful day. so enjoy that. and then remember, we do spring forward as we go saturday night into sunday morning. cooling it
3:24 pm
down as that rain comes sunday monday into tuesday. but notice the picks up very quickly as we work our way into the latter half of next week. back to you. kyla. thank you. still ahead here, a stern warning from health officials after a bay area county sees a sudden spike in overdose deaths. >> due to fentanyl. mylowe's rewards credit card saves us 5% on the things we need. 5% off. - 5% off. 5% of. and, as loyalty members, we get points toward mylowe's money for the things we want. oh, we want this. the all new mylowe's rewars loyalty program is her.

health this afternoon. a major health warning out of the north bay where 5 people have now died in marin county in the past few weeks from a fentanyl overdose. >> the county's public health officer says that his team is extra concerned because in most of these cases, the
3:27 pm
victims took fentanyl with multiple other drugs. >> people may not recognize that fentanyl is included in some sense they're taking if they're taking illegal substances, it could well be contaminated with fentanyl. >> the federal drug enforcement agency says fentanyl is about 100 times stronger than morphine and 50 times more powerful than heroin. 2 milligrams of fentanyl can equal a potentially deadly dose. coming up here in 3, there could be a new city coming to california. it's located just outside the bay area. we have new renderings of what it could look like. >> plus, a lawsuit has been filed against the company that owns the san jose sharks. what the suit is alleging and our coverage of tonight's state of the union address will continue after the break. we're going to be joined live by san francisco man. we've been invited to tonight's been invited to tonight's state of the union

at our 2 big stories from this afternoon. a united airlines flight that took off from san francisco international airport was diverted to los angeles international airport. >> after losing a tire during takeoff, it was able to land safely that flight a boeing 7.77. was originally bound for osaka, japan. the aircraft does have 6 tires on each of its 2 main landing gear sides. so it is designed, according to united to land safely, even if tires are missing or damaged. and that falling tire smashing offense and cars. you can see here the damage from a surface parking lot that's used by airport employees. and according to united, there were 240 people on board that plane. 235 passengers, 10 flight attendants and for
3:31 pm
pilots. we have not heard of anyone being hurt even despite looking at this damage from the tire that landed there at the employee parking lot, doing a lot of damage were have several reporters on the story gathering us some new details right now. the other big story we're watching us from the east bay where a police chase for a murder suspect ended on 5.80 in san leandro. it did lead to the highway being shut down in both directions here. san leandro for a short time. pleasanton officers are now telling us they found a woman dead inside of a home before seeing the suspect drive away. so they followed him onto 5.80, and they say he then took his own life. some of the lanes have since reopened in the area of 100 64th avenue that exit and the 150 avenue exit. we're continuing to get more details on this story for you. stay with us here on kron. 4 details are always on kron. 4 dot com. and now to our coverage of tonight's state of the union address for gore. joined now live by
3:32 pm
someone who is going to be attending that address. michael blockers, a san francisco resident, a veteran and advocate, was invited by speaker meira to nancy pelosi. and he's joining us now live from dc. michael, thank you for joining us here. >> well, thanks for inviting me. really appreciated. what did you find out that you are invited to the state of the union? >> or maybe thursday, wednesday or thursday last week? and what did you think when you find who called you how to have the conversation? go? >> well, my cell phone rang and it nancy pelosi on the other line. are you on normal phone conversation >> no, not really. >> she's she's connected to her community. you know, i'm i'm not i'm sure i'm not the only community member. >> our leader involved with the helping people that she's calls and gets want to know what's going on in. you know, it's not unusual. >> i think the really and you're the executive director
3:33 pm
of sorts to plow francisco community-based not-for-profit support 3,000 homeless, low-income and at-risk veterans in the bay area every year. so she's highlighting the work that your group is right. >> yeah. i mean, that's what she does. and she's helped give resources because she knows that's how that will the care they need. so it's been a big boon for us as and all of over many, many years, right? providing care for those who are left a neglected and we need to care for them and how we can support them best. whether they're homeless services are helping us get of that community center started our employment services or housing or you name it. especially the new pact act, which will really a lot of veterans get enrolled in health care system for the first time. so i'm here. it's very exciting to be to be you know, to support that really. >> and so with you being there in the audience tonight with the swords to plowshares kind of going high in a kind of
3:34 pm
have a spotlight put on it tonight. how do you think that will change things? >> but will hurt. i mean, the whole thing is obviously, you know people are really they care about how veterans are are treated and cared for. and so that's, you know, we know that. so that's really, you know, that window is important for us to sort of like that sort of that window good faith and fair care for our veterans and we want to take advantage of and make sure that they the resources follow the support. and with the resources can really make a difference in the lives of veterans and we have over the years. so i would think that you're looking for president biden there to talk about veterans. >> is there anything else that you're what are you hoping that he will address tonight? well, i i think there's some important remarks about expansion of the pact act. i think that looking forward to that. i think >> he will talk about continuing the support for homeless veterans has made a big difference getting vets off the street. i mean, that's one of the one population and the homeless and had a
3:35 pm
reduction for those in the israeli because some of the investments that they've made to the va and to community partners like sorts. looking forward to that. >> what was your reaction when you found out that you got to go? >> you know, it was just one more thing. one morsel level she given given sort and given veterans have because, you know, she determined she doesn't leave, says she says she doesn't leave any veterans behind. and she hasn't. >> what's your visit like in dc been so far? what do you think? it's what do you think it's going to look like when you're inside there tonight? you're going see every politician that the supreme court justices are there. i mean, do you have like a clean suit to wear? >> i didn't have to go to. i had to go macy's. met with the stylus first time. my life. so i hope it looks good but also to meet with really other than other that leaders like myself and who, you know, are benefited by the pact act. just supporting that whole thing now. we can come
3:36 pm
together. it was really unique, i think, was used the first time that congress has ever really done anything specifically for you know, part of the state of the union. so that was kind of unprecedented. and let me break >> we're so glad to have you been able to nancy pelosi already of you interact with her since you got there? yeah, i in fact am i can see here from heard a voice. sounds like maybe, you know, you know. want to make sure i don't forget things. it's okay. i know she wants to come around and say hi. she does want probably wants to come around. well here, maybe as have been just so she didn't take my time. ever do. i mean, that wouldn't be right. >> there know, i >> i'm very honored that michael blecher is with us for decades. he has been a hero not only in housing, homeless pets, but and continual of care meeting their needs. as i
3:37 pm
introduced him at a press conference earlier today, i said he's been a tremendous intellectual resource it hitting the needs of our veterans. he's been a super patriot. his own service to our country who better to have here as we celebrate the pact act, something that we passed in congress. the president signed that it what it does is it addresses the needs of those veterans who are affected by burn pits. she and and if you had to prove it, you have to prove now you don't have to prove if you were there and you are diagnosed, you get the benefit and hundreds of thousands of people have already benefited millions of people have signed up and our approved and now they're in line getting the benefits. so it's a big deal. i was so happy because michael had time to spend with their secretary. the veterans denis mcdonough, who's been to san francisco, who has addressed
3:38 pm
when he was chief of staff to president obama slept overnight with their veterans in the community. so he has had this is a n priority and now he's the secretary. so any event who better than michael placard brings it all together, meeting the needs of our veterans. but first of all, with his own service to country on the battlefield. and then. and then meeting their needs when they come home. this, we say that if the no soldier behind and when they come home, leave no veteran very michael black or is my guest tonight. sounds like hr was an easy selection for you. what are you expecting to hear from the president tonight during the state of the union? it seems like it's a very high stakes speech from him. >> it is and will in terms of the pact which is there was a hairy, very high-paid. was it? it was a transition. it's something that went beyond the incremental support that we have given to veterans time
3:39 pm
and time again and we try to work in a bipartisan way when it comes to veterans a little on this issue, we had to make a flight because big dollars in mind. so the president has it is one of his priorities in the speech tonight. and that's why we're excited that michael is here. i think that the president will give us up about the future. he has taken us down a positive path to future. but i work is not done and he will show where we go from here. very proud of his president xi. i'm excited about the speech tonight and and that that michael will be here to point is we all do when he talks about the pact that >> years past there sort of been some heckling and some poor decorum from people with in the chamber. there is the president is giving his speech when you think it will be like tonight, you think people will be on good behavior for the speech or are you worried that things might get a little out of hand?

>> well, i'm not worried been anything but gives people may get out of hand. that's more their problem than ours in the president. speaker has asked his. it's caucus to be on good behavior. republican caucus to be on good behavior. let's hope that they will be, but we hope that everyone will be on good behavior because this is the state of the union address, something called for in the constitution where the president comes forward and puts forth. his view of the state of the union. and we have a lot to talk about that. we want people to to know we want to know that the packet so they sign a foot. we want them to know about job opportunities that have been created suing the biden administration so that they can avail themselves of it. and of course, what might have been or economy. markets have never been higher. unemployment is down. inflation is coming down. wages are up. but we all have to fight the cost of living and that's but, you know, in
3:41 pm
terms addressing supply chains and all the things that go into that also concern globally, we want and hope the president making appeal. i think you will, to the congress to pass the assistance worth for ukraine for the humanitarian assistance for gaza, a threat to the issues that are in the priorities that are in the national security legislation, including national security of securing our border. so again, that is and then really tell that the economy in country. we have to talk about women so the president has always been a champion in terms of women, child tax credit of affordability for childcare, respecting our child care workers and and making sure they are and what they deserve. and that job and health care health care providers so all the things that enable a woman and a man
3:42 pm
actually to go to work, knowing that their family is in good shape. but it does, for example, in the chips act, which are very proud of job creator. as i said, 26 million jobs. the president is great, has been created under the president. lot of its private sector, some of the public sector, but all of it with justice so that many more people can participate. and in that tips that that says, if you want one of these grants, you have to have child care a facility. so event but late prodding over some past ideas of that incrementalism and a more transformative under president biden. and that speech. here's what looking forward to tonight. if we had more time, i would ask you all about the election and what it happened across the nation and here in california. but to wrap things up, michael said he got. >> a new suit. this isla look good to be a guest tonight. was there with the secretary of the veterans affairs committee with the members of
3:43 pm
congress, the chairs. >> that other veterans who came they thought he looked very distinguished. >> nancy pelosi, thank you for jumping in here. announced last minute to talk to us a little bit here on kron for this afternoon. appreciate and thank also michael for us for letting us know about this honor. he's received an how much he's looking forward to being your guest tonight at the state of the union. thank you so much. thank you so much. thank you, michael.

>> researchers at ucsf say they have found new evidence to help answer why people develop long covid according to their studies covid antigens can stand the body
3:46 pm
for more than a year after being affected. so in fact, it's a long covid is a condition that patients start to have some lingering effects like fatigue, breathing problems, brain fog. and for more on this study, we're joined now here live by ucsf, infectious disease expert doctor peter chin. hong. thank you so much for joining us. i just go back to 4 years ago this week. we're just living in this blissful world. we barely knew about covid. it was kind of impacting some people. and here we are. 4 years later, we're best friends. i mean, if anything came out of this, we've got to know each other here. so this study was been looking at long covid and so many people are impacted by it. and the study done by ucf ucsf is showing that covid can stay in the body for over a year. >> exactly. so what they did was that they looked samples, blood samples as well as tissue samples in case it was hiding out somewhere else and not in the blood. they found
3:47 pm
that in people experiencing long covid symptoms. and you can find fragments of the virus a long and then 12 in the blood. and so as much as 14 months in the tissue. so this has a implications for how we might think about how long covid arises and if we on this side of this, we can have better treatments. so if you are someone with long covid did study explained then are you ever covid-free? >> like you do if you get a covid infection again. >> do you still get the same symptoms like if it's in your body and it's staying there? how are you ever able to get rid of it? >> well, we know that some get rid of it or feel better. let's just start up that way. clinically i'm off to a few months. some people take a look a little bit longer. so having fragments virus doesn't mean that your immune system, is it i agree. and it tends out in this study they found out that the people with the
3:48 pm
most virus will people who are sicker to begin with and will people who are hospitalized, which kind of goes along with what we observe clinically baton to a prestigious we don't really know what the same significance might be in people might virus fragments without symptoms. a little symptoms. my feeling is that eventually the body does clear it and people get better. but in some people it doesn't get cleared. and that's people may need extra help in the future. you're looking at things like monoclonal antibodies mop up the extra virus or even some of the new anti boroughs that are being tested. >> so the study office so found that covid vaccines they're saying are safer, pregnant women and babies. i'm did the a study at all? look at the different trimesters for and what percentages were kind of shown of like how safe it is. and then there were no impacts to baby is depending on what trimester the got. the
3:49 pm
vaccine. >> yeah. so this is a another sunday, but also by ucsf looking at a national sample of over 2000 people who are pregnant at the time when they got the vaccine. and it's a really significant study because it's the longest study. a follow-up after the vaccine that was given during pregnancy. what they did was they administered a battery of in a questionnaire to a different points along the way. >> and did it hits what's a cable to solve problems? did they have any problems with social interaction, house? that communication, motor skills and they found that there was no difference with the people who got the vaccine during pregnancy in terms of the kids and the people who didn't vaccines. but on state question, there was a slate of the people who got you know, i
3:50 pm
think. 84% during the first trimester 45% during the second trimester. and 24% are in trimester. regardless of when you've got the they didn't find a correlation you know, these developmental delays that happen as long as you 18 months off to the receipt of the vaccine and the kids. >> doctor peter chin hong, thank you so much for joining us to talk about these 2 new studies. appreciate your time. thanks so much. a thing. here's a live look outside and san francisco are excited kyla for the sun today and also that we are going to spring ahead this weekend. i know like i have a class on sunday, though. so i think that means i'm going to sing an hour earlier than i was going to have to sing top of my voice in the morning. we'll see how that let's talk climatology real quickly. in case you are a little ready for a change of season everybody. top line, we're looking at extended forecast for temperature. bottom line, we're looking at
3:51 pm
precipitation. so if we jump ahead, 6 to 10 days that 8 to 14 days, you can see the temperatures are expected to be normal or above-normal. if we look at precipitation, we jump ahead. we go to the middle of the month. you can see there the precipitation chances are supposed to be less than normal. so drying out. now before we get there, we do have some rain to contend with, but it is not today and it is not tomorrow. we're looking good tonight. should be nice. nice this evening. mostly clear skies and then tomorrow, another really gorgeous day. but we do have a few chances of rain in our 7 day forecast. want to take you futurecast first. get you into that first one on saturday. so here we are tonight. looking good. take you into tomorrow. fantastic rate. in fact, i think tomorrow is going to be spectacular. we're going into saturday morning things changing a little bit of a tail end of a front rolling through. now. it's not going to be a whole lot. it looks like a little bit for the north bay starts to fall apart. once it hits the golden gate bridge. so it's not a huge amount of rain, but you can see we get a little break and then sunday as we get into sunday that sunday morning, the next line starting to come through. so the first hit of shoners saturday morning. not
3:52 pm
much totals, not too high. a little bit higher in the north bay. then we get into the sunday monday and even to tuesday timeframe. that's when we're going to get some rain that we're going to have to kind of keep an eye out for. but it's not here yet. you can see that beginning of that front, though, as we zoom out here, there it is. that low pressure system that's going to coming in on saturday. so quick, look at your extended forecast to show you that tomorrow. beautiful day saturday. you're going to need that umbrella in the morning particular the north bay sunday, monday, tuesday, a little rainy and cooler. and then we'll start to pick it up as we work our way towards saint patrick's day weekend. back to you. all right, new now at 3, a town just outside of the bay area could be on its way to becoming an official city. just east of livermore in about 20 miles west of mount house is a growing community of more than 28,000 people. and during the primary, the people of mount house had the chance to vote. yes or no on incorporating the town has a california city and it would be the first to do so since 2011. >> what it means is is that
