it. >> this as another united plane leaving sfo makes an emergency landing. the airline is saying tonight about passenger safety. >> there are random every week assaults. people are invading student dorms. >> the new security team at uc berkeley started 5 parents following a string of recent crimes. when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. good evening. thanks for joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. i'm ken wayne and i'm vicki liviakis, a major crash this evening in oakland. >> 14 people are hurt after a car hit another car and then collided head on with an ac transit bus. oakland fire first reported the crash about 5 o'clock tonight in the area. 54th and international boulevard. the bus was traveling northbound on international with the driver and 11 passengers. according to ac transit, a chrysler 300

was speeding down international when it first collided with a toyota prius. that crash caused the chrysler to jump the center median and collide with a bus head-on. officials tell us of the 14 people hurt. 2 are in critical condition and that includes the driver of the speeding car. all 12 passengers on the bus were taken to the hospital. both ac transit and oakland. police are investigating the crash. new at 10 pleasant and police say the woman who was found dead in her home yesterday was killed by her ex-boyfriend. investigators have not yet identified the woman or the man, but police put out a statement today. >> saying that the woman was at her home on saginaw circle around 11 o'clock yesterday morning with her ex-boyfriend broke into the house. police say the 2 had an argument and then the man shot the woman several times that prompted a police chase along i-580, in san leandro where the driver was found dead of self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

a pleasant his police chief put out a statement calling this a tragic incident. he also says, quote, the city of pleasanton remains committed to supporting victims of domestic violence. we encourage those in abusive relationship and those affected by domestic violence to contact their local police department or local advocacy group for assistance. >> tonight, a united airlines flight from sfo is finally heading to mexico city after making an emergency landing at lax. officials say there was an issue with the aircraft's hydraulic system. that's the fluid in the play that helps pilots control the surface is a the runner, in iran's and that kind of thing. the good news, nobody was hurt. this comes a day after a tire fell off united airlines flight as it took off from sfo. those passengers are heading to japan and also had to divert to lax. that tire landed in the airport employee parking lot, crushing a car, damaging another wiping out the fence. nobody was hurt. but kron 4

did talk to one of the employees was working. her car got damaged. >> show over there thinking that my cart over going to and then i saw my car. basically ripped into shreds and then i started crying because didn't expect that at all. and that's when the cops came in explain what had happened. >> united said it will work with the customers on the flight and the owners of the damage vehicles to make sure everyone's needs are addressed. at last check, the employee we talked to has not heard from united following these incidents. we asked united what is doing to make sure that passengers are safe. in a statement united said in part each of these events is distinct and unrelated to one another. safety is our top priority and will continue to do everything we can to keep our customers and employees safe. >> firefighters in antioch say that they're going to continue to monitor a grass fire that sparked this afternoon. crews say the flames burned 19 acres along west 4th street and tell

the flames were put out about 7 o'clock this evening and no reported injuries and no structures were threatened. the cause is under investigation today is that winds they may have led to the spread of the how is it looking at yeah, you know, that just wasn't a whole lot of wind this afternoon. the winds of actually picked up a little bit this early on this evening, though. >> we're talking about some northerly northeasterly winds that a switch now more of an onshore flow is starting to kick in. you can see the winds have picked up as well. 12 to 15 miles per hour. coming up the west now some more of a true sea breeze has started to kick in. so places downstream from the fire. now, although still smoldering out, they're likely to smell some of that smoke. now in downtown parts of antioch, is smoking is adrift more toward an easterly direction. so you may be seeing that tonight and it hurt her early tomorrow morning until they get a handle on that fire. but right now it looks for overall conditions are much improved. i think a very wet out there

overall. and that is good news for the areas in that location. but overall, i think the pattern looks good right now for tonight. keeping things nice and drye there are some clouds will just off the coastline. in fact, likely going to see a big change in the weather as we head throughout the night tonight and tomorrow. 2 is we've got storm clouds that are just off the coastline. that storm right there likely to bring a change in the weather this weekend will have more on that coming up in a few minutes. >> a water main break washes out stern grove in san francisco. this happened on will wanna street right around pine lake this morning. the damage to the park and the hillside are still being investigated. new at 10 tonight, alameda county deputies are looking for a murder suspect. they released a picture of the suspect. >> they say the death happened on february 9th in the ashland community not far from the bayfair shopping mall. police say they found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds. officials shared this picture from the scene. they say the woman had a mobility issue.

both victims were taken to the hospital, but the woman did not survive. if you recognize this man right here, you're asked to call alameda county sheriff's deputies to try to locate that suspect. police in richmond are looking for a man who ran off with a donation box from the richmond, our center. this video from yesterday shows a person in a dark hooded sweatshirt carrying the box and getting away on a bicycle. if you recognize this suspect right here, you're asked to call richmond police. >> parents of uc berkeley students are taking their children's safety into their own hands. they phrase money now to hire private security to patrol the areas around the campus. but for some and a harry has reaction now from cal students. >> according to the department of education. uc berkeley is the 3rd most dangerous college campus in america. and that needs to change. sauder to tiny is the president of safe. and a father of 2 uc berkeley students, he says as soon as they arrived on campus in

2022. >> there were safety concerns. i think there's a real the man. >> for more safety resources around the university right now, students and people who live in the community are rattled. he says he started the nonprofit a year ago after he felt the university wasn't doing enough to keep students safe. right now we're forced to invest in talk about safety. >> the cause it's become so dire at cal safe. there's work with cal parents in 2023 to raise more than $40,000 to launch a pilot security program that just started this week. private security guards are now stationed around the uc berkeley campus. 6 safety ambassadors are stationed around the marked areas from 6, 30 at night until 3 in the morning. all are wearing bright colored jackets. that's a security by large. other parents i've spoken with are very enthusiastic. i think that there's more mixed feelings from the administration about what we're doing.

>> we were very forthcoming. we told them what we had in mind. they known about this for months now. but now that it's finally here and it's launched you know, it's not a great look for the university, according to safe bears, all of the security guards have california guard cards. >> and have undergone background checks. the guards will not carry any weapons like pepper spray or but hans, still some students say they welcome more guards. i think that a lot of students sometimes can feel kind of unsafe and just knowing they can feel safer will help you feel more comfortable on campus, able to focus on school more. overall, just going to different camps is a good thing. the pilot program will run through march 23rd. >> the safe bears will then evaluate how it went and it extend it. but i look forward to nothing more than the day arriving when. >> we can show the lights off and di band this organization because we're longer necessary in berkeley. amanda hari kron, 4 news in the south bay. more transit options for people living in east san jose. a vta

has approved the construction contract for a long overdue light rail extension. >> kron four's dan thorn here in the studio tonight with more on the project and and this project has been in the making for more than 20 years and once completed. >> the elevated light rail line would connect the eastridge transit center to the milpitas bart station. san jose city leaders celebrating the go ahead because the new tracks will help serve underserved communities. >> the vta project connecting east san jose to milpitas bart is finally rolling along the vta board unanimously approved the construction contract thursday night with mcm rail work. city leaders say after 2 f broken promises, it's time for the wait to end. it's going bring about positive change in a historically disadvantaged. >> area of not just san jose but silicon valley councilmember domingo canned ellis says east san jose's lower-income population.

>> has long had to deal with limited transit options through this new project can tell us says it will allow his district to have more access to jobs and resources. it opens up a lot of opportunity for residents and small businesses and and working class families to get reliably to. and from point a to point the 2 and a half mile extension includes an elevated light rail track along capitol expressway from the alum rock station to the east ridge transit center, which will connect to bart in milpitas. >> the total cost of the project is expected to be more than 650 million dollars, which is more than what vta officials previously budgeted. >> but the vote on the project was seen by city leaders as crucial to make the transit system more equitable to the east side of san jose. this could be a game-changer for residents in the san jose. vta is hoping construction on the project will begin as early as

war zone. a local nurse is getting ready to fly to the middle east to try to save lives in gaza. she leaves a bay area monday and our grant lodes talked with her tonight. he joins us now live in the studio. grant what motivated her to kind of icky? it's really pretty simple. she wants to try to save lives. sandy. >> at killing lives in fairfax in marin typically works as a nurse in richmond's kaiser. but she'll be. >> receiving people in ambulances in gaza who need stabilizing. so they hopefully do not add to the casualty count there. sandy is working with the nonprofit kyle who sits based in berlin, which does have its own security detail. her kids are now adults, but she says they still have mixed emotions. >> of course, children are very that they proudly and

they also worry that wanted a lot of details. you know, my mother is 87. she obviously is so worried about her and her daughter. you i'm i'm not somebody that is going to take, you know, stance is our role is basically to take care of the patients, provide whem all the emergency care, getting ready for surgery, getting them ready for the icu. the thing that's when most heavily on honestly is. the suffering that i'm going to say that i'm going to you know, just the diet are dire circumstances people are being forced to live in. >> it's going to be culture shock. this is actually her 5th became a nurse 14 years ago and wanted to get into nursing to do things like this. she's been to jordan syria. you know, she's going to be eating dehydrated food. there's a little apartment

apparently in gaza that this nonprofit has secured, just know if they'll be clean water. they have to try to filter her big thing is, you know, she wants a cease-fire before she gets there. you know, she'll be receiving people who were injured if there isn't, should there be a cease-fire? her area of expertise helping nursing get that going. elect haitian consultancy business doing that on the side here. so if the violence stops, she'll then switch her focus to try to help these moms get their babies, a healthy because it's been such a struggle. you know, there's not enough food for the moms and it trickles down, obviously to these infants. so it's admirable that she's that it is taking that risk. it's obviously a risk even given the security that is in place, you just obviously never he's going make a difference. so i mean it that that's how desperate things are. each person does make a significant difference

just by being there jessica, like she's got a friend in who lives in syria, who is a doctor who was just there in gaza for a couple weeks. the last 15 because he didn't have the same sort organization to support him. and it's just dire all right. thank good luck >> meantime, a president biden has announced a plan to build a temporary here on the gaza coast that will allow the u.s. and other countries to deliver supplies and aid to the palestinians who are caught in the israel hamas war. the emergency mission will require about 1000 troops. officials say that other countries will be responsible for securing and distributing the aid. prevents us from putting boots on the ground in gaza. >> at the same time, ensuring that we can deliver and distribute aid securely. >> the plan is to have the pier built an operating in 2 months. the pentagon expects the mission to eventually provide 2 million meals a day to gaza.

>> trial has started for 2 former marine county students convicted of killing an italian police officer in rome back in 2019 that i'm a pious teens for vacationing in italy when the 2 met up with the alleged drug dealer who turned out to be an undhrcover police officer. prosecutors say finnegan lee elder stabbed an officer 11 times and gabriel natale us helped him hide the knife in their hotel room. they are sentenced to life in prison. but last year, italy's highest court threw out the convictions based on the defense's argument that the 2 americans didn't realize are dealing with italian police hearings will continue next month with a resolution expected by summer. >> man has been arrested for allegedly threatening to go on a killing spree at you tubes. san bruno campus. investigators say the made threats on his social media accounts and he's pleaded not guilty. his next court date is

set for this coming wednesday. >> in oakland, thieves broke into this lgbtq youth club. the front door of town news club that's now boarded up after it was damaged. leaders at the center tell us it happened early yesterday morning. it's unclear what specifically the thieves took. the senate has says it plans to replace set damaged or >> looking ahead, daylight saving starts on sunday. and doctors say that you can get prepared for it in advance. they say, you know, start what waking up earlier tomorrow and on saturday, it is saturday. they also suggest adjusting your bill and exercise times to help your body adjust. all right. we're going to be a testing ourselves this weekend more. and so we're adjusting to sunshine with just again, right? yeah, that's the unfortunate right? we're just get used to that nice sunshine. feel like spring outside and it is back. >> to which are we go again this weekend. we've got not one. >> but 3 different weather systems that are going affect

the around the bay area over the next 5 days or so. and then looks like we'll see a nice begin develop as we get in toward the latter part of next week. so right we've got a couple of clouds on the horizon. some of that's going to be thickening up as we go through the night tonight and tomorrow morning. so, yeah, be prepared for that. likely to see some of those clouds rolling on through. and that is going to make a change in the pattern for the bay area's. we're going to see what looks like probably some showers moving through at least parts of the north bay for tomorrow. temperatures out the look at the numbers. cooling off in spots. looking like the low temperatures will be dropping down into the 40's in many spots. even some low 40's inland. so going to be a bit on the chilly side. you can see the storm clouds out there spinning around right now. not too far away. it has been a nice couple of days, but tomorrow plan on some cooler temperatures. slight chance of showers mainly north of the golden gate bridge. maybe some drizzle light sprinkles along the coastline in the san francisco along the peninsula. the meantime, though, remaining dry out there right now and but we like that. that's for sure.

but as we head through the night tonight, those clouds will be picking up and rolling on in and thickening up as we head toward tomorrow morning. so plan on that. that ridge of high pressure that brought us a nice break from the stormy weather that's going to slide east, followed up next approaching frontal system kind of fall apart as it comes through, but likely to bring a couple scattered showers in the bay area. so yeah, let's time it out for you overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. you see a couple showers moving in by early tomorrow the kind of moving on through by about the middle of the day or so. so plan chance of a few scattered showers by the afternoon. that is long gone. but maybe a bigger storm system on the way for sunday. we'll talk more about that coming up with your 10, 10 in a few lawrence. happening tomorrow in the castro after more than 2 decades of business seafood restaurant catch will be serving its last dinners. that business announced its closure earlier this week. >> the location was officially deemed a landmark in 2004 being the original home of names project. that's a memorial to honor the lives lost to aids.

those rising pg and e bills are frustrating, it. >> there's no relief ahead because in fact, california utilities officials have

actually approved yet another increase from first and current reports on how much your bill could go up. and when. >> if you think p g any bills are already high, get ready for another increase. the california public utilities commission is okay to 12 month rate hike. >> so pg and e can recoup a portion of the money that was spent for wildfire safety work. that means in late april early may average electric bills will go up about $3.65 a month and gas bills will increase just over a dollar a month. >> it is absolutely unsustainable. have double digit increase. 5th year after year. martone with the utility reform network says this latest increase. >> he's on top of the 13% rate hike that went into effect in january. that's all bills go up. an average of $34 and $0.50 a month. people who are thaen years retired fixed income. this able. these are the folks to get hurt the most. by these rate increases.

these bill increases. more than anyone else. they need a limit. >> tony is hoping customers will pressure state lawmakers to cap eugenie increases since 2019. san francisco has been exploring another option having the san francisco public utilities commission purchased the grid and take over the distribution of electricity in the city and county of san francisco. >> made a formal offer to pg and e to purcease their grid for 2.5 billion dollars. they have told us it's not for sale. and that the price is too low so far pg and e has and entertain the buyout. but san francisco is pushing forward. we think we can provide the service at a more reliable cost-effective rate. we are structurally advantaged as as a local government and providing that service under the local government model. in

resorts basking in all that wonderful snow they've had. and now you've got a weekend weather weather is cooperating. what a nice weekend to get up there. but again, remember if you plan on sticking around for the weekend, that weather is going to change as we head in towards sunday. they are looking at partly cloudy skies overnight tonight, a little chilly in spots tomorrow. now just call partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers in mainly north of the golden gate bridge. think a better chance as we get into sunday afternoon as another storm system drops and temperatures today. pretty impressive. how about 70 in san jose today. 68 in lemore. 67 in both conquered and san rosen. i-65 in san francisco. storm rotating out there. a couple of them right now are probably going to see 3 impact a bay area in the coming days. this first one just about to move onshore. high pressure. scooting out of the way that front comes through but kind of falls apart as runs right the back of that ridge. so not much shower activity out of that with just some light showers behind that, though we've got another one coming. that one coming in on sunday. you can see their long range forecast and then another one possibly late monday into
