>> now at 11, a major crash in oakland leaves 14 people injured after a car crashes head-on with an ac transit bus. good evening. thanks for joining us for news. 11. >> i'm noelle bellow and i'm grant lotus. this was bad ac transit authorities and oakland police are investigating the crash now the oakland fire department first showed up about 5 o'clock tonight area of 54th and international. according to ac transit, a chrysler 300 was speeding down international when it first collided with a toyota prius that first crash caused the crisis under jump over the center median and then crashed head-on with the bus. officials tell us of the 14 people injured. >> 2 are in critical condition, including the driver of the speeding car, all 12 passengers who were on the bus were taken to the hospital. >> tonight, a united flight from sfo down to mexico city had to divert to lax because

the aircraft's hydraulic system was having problems. the faa tells us the flight landed safely at sfo about 4.30, this afternoon after the crew reported that issue, according to united passengers deplaned normally at the gate, everybody was fine. customers are now traveling to mexico in a new plane this evening. this comes a day after a tire fell off a united plane as it took off from sfo. crazy times in the airline industry. here's video you can see that tired just pop right off. fall to the ground. those passengers, we're headed to japan and had to divert to lax as well. united says a different plane took those people to osaka last night. the tire landed in the airport employee parking lot, crushing one car, damaging another. thankfully, nobody was hurt. kron 4 talk to one of the employees who was working when her car got smashed.

>> show over there thinking that my cart over going to and then i saw my basically ripped into shreds and then i started crying because didn't expect it at all. and that's when the cops came in >> explain what had happened. those tires almost 5 feet high. when you almost 300 pounds. >> they looked big falling off, but huge tires. united executives say they will work with the passengers on the flight and the owners of those damaged vehicles to try to make sure everyone's needs are addressed as they put it. as of today, though, the employee we just heard from had not heard from united executives in a statement united said in part tonight after this most recent each of these events they say is the state to another related to one another. >> safety is our top priority and will continue to do everything we can to keep our customers and employees safe. >> taking a live look now at

clouds will thicken up a little bit after midnight tonight and tomorrow morning. lpwell, we could be looking at chance of some rain that front coming on shore. high pressure headed east. you can see as it moves through, just not much energy with it begins to fall apart, but plan at least a chance of showers in the morning drying out by the afternoon. we've got a couple more storms on the rise. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. >> lawrence, thank you. plus into and police say the woman who was found dead in her home yesterday was killed by her ex-boyfriend. investigators have not yet identified the woman or the man involved, but police put out a statement today saying the woman was at her home on saginaw circle around 11 yesterday morning when her ex-boyfriend broke into the house. the 2 had an argument and then the man shot the woman several times, according to police. that prompted a police chase along i-580, in san leandro where the driver was then found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. pleasanton as police chief did put out a statement calling it a tragic incident. he also said the city is

committed to supporting victims of domestic violence, encouraging those and abuse of relationships to contact their local police department. we're advocacy group for help. >> kind of a sad sign of the times with parents of uc berkeley students are taking their children's safety into their own hands. the nonprofit they call themselves safe bears, raise money and they've hired private security guards to patrol the areas around the campus on tours. amanda hari spoke with cal students and the president of this organization about the new program. >> according to the department of education. uc berkeley is the 3rd most dangerous college campus in america. and that needs to change. sauder to tiny is the president of safe. and a father of 2 uc berkeley students, he says as soon as they arrived on campus in 2022. >> there were safety concerns. i think there's a real. >> the man for more safety resources around the university. he says he started the nonprofit a year ago after

felt the university wasn't doing enough to keep students safe were forced to invest and talk about safety. the cause it's become so dire. safe bears worked with cal parents in 2023 to raise more than $40,000 to launch a pilot security program that just started this week. private security guards are now stationed around the uc berkeley campus. 6 safety ambassadors are stationed around the marked areas from 6, 30 at night until 3 in the morning. all are wearing bright colored jackets. that's a security. i think that there's more mixed feelings from the administration about what we're doing. >> we were very forthcoming. we told them what we had in mind. they've known about this for months now. but now that it's finally here and it's launched you know, it's not a great look for the university, according to safe bears, all of the security guards have california guard cards. >> and have undergone background checks. the guards will not carry any weapons like pepper spray or but hans,

still some students say they welcome more guards. i think that. >> a lot of students sometimes can feel kind of unsafe and just knowing they can feel safer will help you feel more comfortable campus, able to focus school more. overall, just going to different camps. a good thing. the pilot program will run through march 23rd. >> the safe bears will then evaluate how it and it extend it in berkeley. amanda hari kron, 4 news. >> police in richmond are they're looking for a person - who they say ran off with a donation box from the richmond arts center. take a look at this video is from yesterday. it shows a person in a dark hooded sweatshirt carrying a box and getting way on a bike. if you are somehow able to recognize that person, you're asked to call richmond police. >> in the south bay, more transit options for people living in east san jose. now the vta board of directors have approved the construction contract for a long overdue light rail extension kron

four's dan thorn joining us in the newsroom tonight with more on this project down. >> noel, the project has been in the works for more than 20 years and once completed the elevated light rail would connect the eastridge transit center to the milpitas bart station, san jose city leaders are celebrating the go ahead because the new tracks will help underserved communities. >> the vta project connecting east san jose to milpitas bart is finally rolling along the vta board unanimously approved the construction contract thursday night with mcm rail work. city leaders say after 2 decades of broken promises, it's time for the way to end. it's going bring about positive change in a historically disadvantaged. >> area of not just san jose but silicon valley councilmember domingo canned ellis says east san jose's lower-income population. >> has long had to deal with limited transit options through this new project can tell us says it will allow his

district to have more access to jobs and resources. it opens up a lot of opportunity for residents and small businesses and and working class families to get reliably to. and from point a to point the 2 and a half mile extension includes an elevated light rail track along capitol expressway from the alum rock station to the east ridge transit center, which will connect to bart in milpitas. >> the total cost of the project is expected to be more than 650 million dollars, which is more than what vta officials previously budgeted. >> but the vote on the project was seen by city leaders as crucial to make the transit system more equitable to the east side of san jose. this could be a game-changer for residents in the jose. well, now the tea's hoping construction on this project will begin as early as next month and then rail service could begin. >> by 2028 in the newsroom. dan thorn kron. 4 news. thank

you, dan. >> heading into a war zone, a local nurse is preparing to fly to the middle east to try to save lives in gaza. she leave the bay area monday. we'll be in gaza for 17 days. sandi adler lives fairfax in marin. she typically works as a nurse. it kaiser in richmond. she's also trained to help moms who have trouble nursing their babies. but unless there is a cease-fire, she will appeal focusing on moms and babies should be receiving people in ambulances. stabilizing life-threatening stuff. so you don't have more casualties. heidi li, she's working with the nonprofit ca dose, which is based in berlin. she has adult sons and daughters who have mixed feelings about all this. >> of course, children are very that they proudly and they also worry that one in a lot of details. you know, my mother is 87. she obviously is

so worried about her and her daughter. you i'm i'm not somebody that is going to take, you know, stance is our role is basically to take care of the patients, provide them all the emergency care, getting ready for surgery, getting them ready for the icu. the thing that's when most heavily on honestly is. the suffering that i'm going to say that i'm going to you know, just the diet are dire circumstances people are being forced to live in. >> meantime, president biden has announced a plan to build a temporary pier on the gaza coast. it will allow the united states and other countries to deliver supplies and aid to the palestinians caught and the israel-hamas war. the emergency mission will require about 1000 troops. officials say other countries will be responsible for securing and distributing the aid. >> prevents us from putting boots on the ground in gaza.

at the same time, ensuring that we can deliver and distribute aid securely. >> the plan is to have the pier built and operating in the next 2 months. the pentagon expects the mission to eventually provide 2 million meals a day to gaza. >> in the east bay, firefighters will continue monitoring the site of a 19 acre grass fire this evening. it started about 4 this afternoon. lot of black smoke there. flames burned along west 4th street until they were put out about 7 o'clock this evening. no injuries reported. no structures were threatened to the cause is under investigation. >> happening tomorrow in the castro after more than 2 decades in business seafood restaurant catch will be serving its last dinners. the business announced its closure earlier this week. the location was officially deemed a landmark back in 2004 for being the original home of the names project. that's the memorial honoring the lives lost to aids. tomorrow, san

francisco's union square meantime will be blooming with thousands of 2 lips 80,000 tulips that that's all part of union square alliance spring and summer initiative. organizers say this month's event is in honor of international women's day, which was today. you will be able to choose 5 flowers for free, but you'll be limited to just 5 minutes in that tulip field. make sure you go early. if you're trying to get some tulips line starts forming right when it opens at 09:00am. if you can't make it out tomorrow, tulip day is set to return in may july and august 5 minutes and keep it moving. up next, a special graduation ceremony today. how a program is bringing hope to people incarcerated and to their loved ones. >> tonight, people packed the streets in chinatown. the details on the next night market coming up. >> and a business owner using social media to bring attention to shoplifters will share her story next.

francisco shop owners ongoing battle with shoplifters is going viral. >> security gates, cameras, even store layout changes 7th been enough to deter thieves along fillmore street. so the owners trying a new tactic posting videos of the incidents online. this surveillance video was posted showing 2 shoplifting incidents at her store last month. chandler tang owns post script. it's a small business that focuses on stationery and home goods. she's using her

social media now to highlight the challenges small businesses face and the real cost of these crimes. >> door smashed a couple no one got in. but we had to install security gate. we don't really have this in our budget. so, you know, we also support a lot of small business vendors so it impacts them as well. so the effect is much bigger. >> tank says she's received a lot of support from customers visiting her pack ice shop since posting videos online. police say no arrests have been made regarding these incidents. >> this week, a graduation ceremony was held for 50 men at san quentin rehabilitation center. it's part of an effort to prepare incarcerated people for the workforce and to help keep them from a life of crime. some learned construction. others have spent their time learning how to code for tony to foia. it was audio production. his parents came to cheer him on as he got his certificate to foia. already runs a podcast called ear hustle.

to return sometime later this year. >> perfect night for something like a night market. we had beautiful weather today. i see some clouds starting to move in, though this evening. >> yeah, that is kind of telling the story line. so, yeah, it really does high-pressure a kind of breaking down. we had a bit of an offshore wind now the sea breezes blow it again here come those clouds rolling in and it looks like a change for the weekend. i know a lot of folks want to get out there and enjoy, but you may need that umbrella from time to time. not going to be a washout. these are not very large storms that going to impact a bay area. but it will get wet around parts of bay area tomorrow and probably on sunday, too. outside right now, dry looking out toward the golden gate bridge overnight tonight, clouds going to thicken up a bit as we head in toward tomorrow morning, going to see a slight chance of some showers, mainly north of the golden gate bridge. think a better chance of a couple raindrops as we head in towards sunday right now. it's 53 degrees in san francisco. 49 and cool in san mateo. 51 in concord and 48 degrees in blair also cooling off now, but that cloud cover hold those temperatures up just a little bit. not quite

as cold. as last night we dipped into the 30's in some of the valleys. but that storm system just about to move onshore. high pressure now sliding east. that's going to kind of open up the door. so some more storms off the coastline. let's time it out for you as we head into early tomorrow morning, just after 8 o'clock in the morning. you see a few scattered showers moving in the north bay, then you go right there about 10, 30 or so that rain making its way are in. and then it looks like it starts to fall apart as it pushes southward and your skies start to clear out a little bit. so again, not a rainout, but do be prepared for a couple raindrops, especially north of the golden gate bridge. well, after that one goes through, we've got another one on the way. this in a little more substantial as we head in towards sunday. so maybe pick upwards of attempt, maybe 3rd of an inch maybe in the north bay. and then we've got another one coming in on monday night into tuesday. but here's the best news of all after that. yeah, we're going to get things right. we're going bring some sunshine and looks like some spring-like weather on the way. in fact, maybe spring check in a little early. if you believe some long range forecast models, we're going to be drying things out, bring

some above normal tempeoatures as we head toward latter part of next week. numbers tomorrow are going to take a hit with the cloud cover the scattered showers number generally in the 50's. so you'll find some warmer weather in a place like the saint clair about maybe about 66 degrees. but this what like to see get to the weekend. yeah. chance some showers and again on tuesday after that, look at the trend in the temperatures. yeah. maybe these temperatures getting near 80 degrees in some of the warmer yeah, we're going to get things going in the right direction. i hope this all come together and then by everybody is going to be yeah. we've been patiently been really patient. it's mid-march, though now. and yeah, people after a while. people say enough is enough. we love the rain. but yeah. >> thank you right next. yeah. thank you. learn. all right. thanks. >> today is international women's day oakland. high school wildcats are celebrating in a big way today. the girls basketball team won the state championship for division 5. they went into the tournament ranked as the 13 seed today
