>> it was a flight bound for sfo from sydney and experts say the issue appears to be some kind of hydraulic failure. kron four's. dan kerman joins us live from sfo tonight with more. dan, it questions about what year is after united jet bound for l- osaka lost a tire shortly after take off at sfo. >> and it crashed into parked cars. there's been another united incident and a united flight 8.30, from sydney to sfo, head to return to sydney after what united described as a maintenance issue. those who have seen the video of the incident so fluid pouring off the plane on takeoff. clearly they had a problem with the hydraulic either lying or system something. something broke that the was.

>> allowing hydraulic fluid to overboard. douglas rice is a retired commercial airline pilot and regional vice president of the california pilots association that hydraulic fluid the ability for the landing gear to go up and down. it provides said movement of the flight controls it provide, sir, sorry, controls the brakes, primarily flight controls and landing. here are what it's there for a united flight from san francisco to mexico city on friday. also had a hydraulic issue and had to make an emergency landing at lax. what would cause one of the hydraulic systems to fail? that could be just simple law luck of the draw the wheel coming off is a is a much more concerning issue because there's several failure modes that we need to look at. was it me was it something that actually fatigue bail? was

another united flight, a boeing 7.37. max 8 went off the runway at the airport in houston. officials say the flight had just landed when it started to veer off the runway into the grass. no one was hurt there. the faa is investigating. >> a few days before that, an engine on a united airlines flight. a boeing 7.37. caught fire right after takeoff from an airport in houston last monday. the man who took that video says it sounded like a bomb going off and that the plane took a nosedive right after the crew was able to make an emergency landing back in houston after about 30 minutes. no one was hurt. that case also under investigation. coming up ahead at 5.30, we will be speaking with an aviation expert about why there's been an uptick in these incidents with united and what needs to be done about them. >> boeing has failed nearly 40% of the audits conducted by the faa since that mid air

scare involving the door plug that fell off and alaska plane according to the new york times, u.s. air safety regulators say they found dozens of problems facilities owned by boeing and one of its key suppliers and tonight we are learning a boeing whistleblower who raised concerns about production standards to the company was found dead in the days before his death. >> he had been testifying against the company. john barnett worked as a quality manager for boeing. more than 30 for more than 30 years before his retirement, barnett said he repeatedly raised concerns to supervisors but was ignored. he also said boeing retaliated against him and made working conditions so intolerable. he was forced to retire early. boeing has denied those claims. barnett was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in a hotel parking lot in south carolina where he had given a formal deposition last week he was due to undergo

further questioning just this past weekend. other news this evening, convicted killer scott peterson appeared before a judge today. the la innocence project has taken an interest in peterson's case and is requesting permission to review evidence from the decades-old investigation. kron four's charles clifford has details. >> well, earlier this year, the la innocence project announced it was going to take another look at the scott peterson case. they say there could be new witness testimony and new evidence that might be able to set peterson free today, the mateo county courtroom attorneys for the innocence project presented their case in what could be the first of many hearings as their investigation continues inside a mateo county courtroom tuesday morning, scott peterson appeared via video conference. lawyers with the la innocence project. attorneys from the stanislaus county district attorney's office and members of the peterson family were also in the room in 2004 peterson was convicted of murdering his wife laci and their unborn son. connor in modesto, back in 2002 at the original trial,

peterson was sentenced to death, but that was later changed to life in prison is currently serving out his sentence at mule creek state prison east of sacramento. peterson has maintained his innocence since lacey's disappearance earlier this year, the innocence project submitted multiple court filings reeuesting access to the large amount of evidence that was gathered during the original investigation in its court filings, the innocence project suggested that someone other than peterson may have been responsible for laci's death. they also took issue with how the original case was handled and say that intense media attention during the investigation may have influenced the case among the items they're seeking to examine is any evidence related to a burned out van. it was found near the peterson home around the time of lisa's disappearance. they also want new dna testing done on blood found inside that van in court on tuesday, the judge scheduled 3 additional hearings to discuss the different aspects of the innocence project requests. scott peterson only spoke briefly to say that he prefers attending these hearings via

video conference rather than in person in redwood city. charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> our weather time as we take a live look outside haze there as the camera from sutro tower looks across the marina and you see the rock out there in the bay. yeah, it looks. so he's the hazy. i thought it was going to be cold or when i stepped outside. but it it wasn't. lawrence was a little bit of warmth out there. yeah, we're going to find a lot warmer weather coming our way as we're going to get a taste of some spring. sunshine headed our direction after a soggy start the day the clouds begin to part of the afternoon just a bit. a lot of moisture left over. >> a few of those clouds continuing to roll on by. but the rain, it is long gone now and not coming back this winter. of course, spring begins on next monday. here's the front moved through the bay area. see, bring with it. some showers here. lot of snow in the high country too. begin to get on the back side, though, that system now so things kind of quieting down. we do have a couple of scattered showers across northern california, mainly over the mountain tops and to our north. otherwise we're

drying things out around the bay area now. and that is going to be a sign of things to come as we're going to see some nice weather kind of settling in now as high pressure going to be building in. so yeah, tonight we're going to clear out your skies overnight tonight. going to be a little cool in spots. the good news is as high pressure taking over that big ridge going to build in. that's going to be a strong one. now we are going to see some winds behind that building. ridge said low pressure center kick in the east will be a little bit breezy by tomorrow afternoon, probably bit windy with some offshore winds kicking in on thursday. but overall, that trend to sort some dry weather looks like it is going to stay that vay. not only over the next couple days, but probably into the weekend staying dry, probably in the beginning of spring and warm 2. guys, back to you. all right. thanks, lawrence. new at 5, a man was arrested today after police say. >> he pepper sprayed somebody who was preparing to celebrate ramadan. the assault happened. they say at the islamic center of north marin and of auto yesterday, the victim told police the suspect identified

as 48 year-old david margolis, ash carried a bag into the center and showed what looked like a gun. the victim says they tried to grab the suspect to keep him from the bag, which led to a struggle. and then the suspect, they say pepper sprayed them. the victim was taken to the d% hospital. minor injuries. police say they did not fi a gun, but the suspect was booked into jail on several charges. officers say, however, there is not enough evidence to charge this person with a hate crime. >> the san francisco department of public health gave an update today on the state of overdose deaths in the city. they say getting better down slightly from 67 deaths in january to 64 drug-related overdose deaths last month. kron four's rob nesbitt joins us live in the newsroom now with the treatment methods that robbed, they say, seem to be working at least a little. >> we talked a lot the last year about the opioid epidemic in fentanyl's role in it.

fentanyl is still the leading cause of overdose deaths in san francisco and health experts talked at length today about how contingency management makes a difference. after updating the overdose numbers for the month of february, the director of behavioral health services at the san francisco department of public health. >> doctor hilary cummins talked about the importance of medications like methadone to treat opioid use disorder. the majority of tuesday's update, though, was used to talk about contingency management. >> contingency management is a behavioral therapy that can help people stop using stimulants such as methamphetamine and cocaine. and get in and stay in treatment, contingency management on paper uses motivational incentives to help people kick their addictions. it's being used in 24 california counties, according to mary scylla with the national harm reduction coalition, we're getting votes. >> money if able to, we're told their drug and hope to get them onto course of treatment.

>> not on the list of drugs. tuesday was fentanyl. but doctor cullen says while the majority of overdose deaths are driven by fentanyl, they often involve other drugs that contingency management is used for. so by reaching people who use stimulants. >> and helping them to stabilize their lives. we expect that we will see some positive health outcomes for all of their substance use the overdose numbers. month-to-month are down in san francisco. there were 12 more overdose deaths in february compared to the same time last year. >> it's why the department of health says it's using high impact interventions to save lives, even though addiction is a chronic illness. recovery is possible. there is a way out of addiction and into a healthier life. the department of health says it focusing most of its resources towards communities with high rates of overdose. >> such as unhoused people and those who have had a prior overdose reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news.

>> developing news now, contra costa. fire crews say a hazmat situation in martinez is now cleared after shutting down several streets. fire officials say 3 tankers were found abandoned on the side of the road friday at pacheco boulevard near how road and the martinez reservoir. 2 of them, we're told, but one was left there today that last tanker started leaking causing a brief hazmat scare. authorities tested samples from inside the leaking tanker and tell us the fluid was not hazardous. it's still unclear what exactly what's inside the tankers and why they were abandoned. another fbi raid on the dublin, a federal prison this week amid allegations of rampant abuse workers and the women incarcerated there have called the facility the rape club, even so this raid caught one of the attorneys representing victims by

surprise kron four's terisa stasio now brings us the latest on what is happening at the troubled prison. >> it's confusing. it's people don't know where to turn karin janssen is a lawyer whose firm, along with writes behind bars is suing the dublin facility in hopes of turning the tide at the troubled dublin, federal correctional institution. on monday, fbi agents raided the facility yet again taking multiple boxes of potential all we know is that the fbi, they did the facility took i believe they also may have taken computers. >> and we also know that the same time almost the entire executive staff was let go or removed, no longer working. there. and that includes individuals who in january testified about how they were making positive changes. in a statement to kron 4 news, a bureau of prisons spokesperson

said, quote, a new team has been charged with developing a plan for the future of the facility and quote. >> back in 2021, the fbi also raided the facility and that lead to warden ray garcia seen here being charged and convicted with multiple counts of abuse for ordering incarcerated women to pose naked 7 others were found guilty of abuse. my farm brought the case back in the 90's against dublin, which at that time. >> had placed a women in the mail facility and sold access to and again, here we are. you know, 30 years later and we're still seeing abuse and harassment came out of that facility. jansen says that the judge overseeing both the criminal and civil actions in this case has called a special hearing on friday. jansen says that they are asking for an outside moderator referred to as a special master to be appointed. who can come in here and figure out what's

going on and most importantly, figure out how to solve it. to recess. stasio kron. 4 news. >> governor newsom says the chp has arrested more than 160 people and recovered more than 300 cars and several sting operations in oakland and the east bay. the governor said the suspects were linked to gangs, organized crime and carjacking ring says this all stems from the surge in the chp presents announced in february to help combat crime in the region. the governor says the chp will continue to have announced operations and the east bay with more than 70 officers. they're right now for that exact reason. >> in the span oak tree, more than 100 years old is now chopped up into pieces of wood after crashing down onto power lines and damaged cars and even blocked a road last night in lafayette. this is on spring hill road. that tree also knocked out power in the

neighborhood until around 6 o'clock this morning pg and e those big old tree limbs to g o- make sure they don't fall on a any more power lines. xfinity spent several hours trying to get service up and running for its customers as well. no word on what exactly caused the tree to fall. but 100 years old. we have saturated ground from a lot of rain. we had tprains again last night. so, you know, there's likely some reason the ingredients are there. yeah, next couple of days, though, expected to get windier than what we have been seeing, which >> you could think may lead to more limbs coming down. chief meteorologist lawrence karnow back with us now to outline the next couple of days. yeah, we're going to see that sun coming back and it's not going to the rain is not going to the storms but the winds, well, they're going to be kicking up as high pressure begins to build in low pressure to our east and of a sudden, you're gonna start to see that tire pressure gradient. that means the pressures getting very close

together. that means we'll see some wind really kind of kicking in starting tomorrow afternoon. i think really going to see that wind picking up up there right now. the clouds still party entirely done with a system that's moving on through, but it will be moving out overnight tonight, the winds a little breezy along the coastline of that's more than general onshore breeze right now. by tomorrow, we start to talk more of a northerly wind and then we get to stronger winds as we head in toward thursday. i think that will be a real windy day around the bay area. but right now you can see the clouds kind of breaking up a bit as that cold front falling apart. moving across california. still some lingering snow showers in the high country. the couple scattered showers up above. here's the wind forecast for as we take you through the night tonight. these kind of calm down overnight tonight. but watch as the winds begin to switch directions starts to that northerly component to the wind. and then as we head through the day tomorrow, we start to see the strong wind gusts developing in part the east bay valleys. so that normally when going to start to set itself up. but i think it's pretty windy across the entire bay area as we head in toward thursday. tomorrow, though, enjoy that sunshine. the numbers going to start to warm up a mostly sunny skies about 67 degrees. a beautiful
