>> news station, this is home. 11. >> good evening. thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 11. i'm noelle bellow and i'm grant lotus a traffic alert for east bay drivers or anybody who uses 6.80. there was this paving projects we've been telling you about a supposed to happen months ago, but it is finally set to actually begin this weekend in pleasanton kron four's. sara stinson joining us in studio now with what you need to know to prepare for that closure. sarah caltrans will be closing a nine-mile stretch of southbound 6.80, this weekend to repave the road.

>> that work has grant mentioned was initially scheduled to start in january, but it got delayed again and again because of the rain. but it is finally set to begin at 9 friday night and go through for 4 in the morning on monday. on 6.80, in pleasanton signs warning drivers of a major disruption this weekend. caltrans is shutting down a nine-mile stretch of the interstate. >> to replace worn out lanes. the goal is to fix pesky potholes. janice morrow with caltrans district 4 says the closure will be a short-term inconvenience that comes with a long-term fix for will smooth years and to 6.80, will be closed between al costa boulevard in san ramon all the way south to state route 84 in seminole northbound 6.80, will remain open. morris says getting it done in one weekend will allow them to reduce the number of nightly closures needed. >> and in turn allows caltrans to finish the project sooner moving the project, the helm.

francisco drivers are getting a better idea of where they can expect speed cameras to be installed across the city. sfmta released its list of potential speed camera locations today. it includes 33 high injuries, streets, school zones and areas with documented history of sideshows law indicates speeding 11 miles per hour over the posted limit would trigger a violation. the locations will be discussed next tuesday at the sfmta board of directors meeting and approval vote should come in a few months. and the speed safety cameras are expected to launch early next year. you can find the full list of the recommend recommendations on the sfmta website. alameda county election officials say they will be manually counting the signatures submitted in a petition to recall district attorney pamela price. >> the county registrar of voters said the results of a random sampling of the signatures submitted last week. we're not sufficient to determine whether the signature threshold was met. the recall effort requires

about 73,000 signatures to qualify. organizers of the recall say they've submitted more than 123,000 signatures. >> a man suspected of robbing a bank in campbell and capitola is in custody tonight. capitol police say they've arrested travis sanchez on tuesday week after the robberies. sanchez is in the santa cruz county jail tonight on no bail. the big weather story today. >> a lot of sunshine, whole lot of wind, strong winds knocked down power to barton, the east bay pg and e says the winds caused a tree branch to fall in the line this morning, cutting power to the transit system near berkeley, a bus bridge should be called in to help. bart says some trains said to be turned around because of the outage and palo alto power has been restored after strong winds caused a tree to fall on power lines there. today, it cut out powered almost 900 customers. happening just before noon

between embarcadero and roads, utility workers spent the day clearing branches off the power line while crews on the ground scent of new equipment to those folks happy to have power back tonight. others hoping the same doesn't happen to them. we're not done with the winds just yet. >> kron four's lawrence karnow is here with more on that warrant. yeah, certainly that could be an issue overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. i think a return. >> of another round of strong gusty winds, especially in the north of the east bay. i think over the mountain tops. that's where you see the strongest winds. youve got those winds. web skies, though. nice and clear around the bay area. nice warm down below. but look at some of the gusts we have over the last 24 hours. 72 mile an hour gust mount diablo healdsburg hill. 62 mile an hour gust black hawk in the east bay, almost 60 miles per hour. oakland right at the airport. 44 mile an hour gusts, san francisco downtown, a 37 mile an hour gust san jose. 34 miles per hour. we had gusty winds around the bay area. no getting around that of the wind advisory remains in effect until 11 o'clock

tomorrow morning. expecting another strong round of some very gusty winds as we head toward tomorrow. those winds, yes, still pretty breezy out there right now. and you're going to see some gustier spots over the mountain tops. but forecast model showing as we head through the night tonight and tomorrow morning. that's when we'll see the peak of the gusts. the winds again, the commute tomorrow. watch out some gusts of 30 40 miles per hour. the good news is by the afternoon, those winds calm down leave behind sunshine and warm temperatures. thank you, larry. and sand east oakland nonprofit had to shut down after a car. >> crashed into the building. this is now the second time the group has had to deal with reckless drivers causing thousands of dollars in damage. the group now needs help to get back up and running. kron four's. dan thorn spoke with one of the group's coordinators. he joins us now in studio with more than noel. the group is called homies empowerment and they help provide food and clothing to those in need in east oakland. >> and this specific building is called their care center. and for the second time since 2022, a car smashed into this

building and now they're not sure when they're going to reopen. it's a devastating blow for east oakland, nonprofit, homies empowerment. >> their care center on 77th in macarthur heavily damaged after a speeding driver crashed into it. it just beneath that >> heartbreaking that here we are both the 2 years. we're at this again. >> care center coordinator vyvianna montana, speaking through a protective mask because of potentially harmful particles floating around inside the building. she says early thursday morning, 2 cars were seen speeding down the street and then one of them lost control and slammed into the front of the care center. the car was later towed away, but the driver was nowhere to be found. and we're lucky that it didn't happrn during th day time where we have. >> over 2000 families lined up to food or when we have our days that we do the store.

this is now the second time the nonprofit has had to deal with reckless drivers smashing into their building in 2022. and out of control street racer struck the center forcing them to stop much-needed services for 6 months. >> because of the structural damage done to the building this time the center could be closed for much longer. the group will also have to stop providing food and clothing to families while the building's damage get surveyed. montano says they need the city to step up with some solutions, kind of upsetting because we have reached out to the city. >> we have reached out to see we can get some type of barriers in the front of the facility. yet nothing has done. homies empowerment is asking for the community to help them bounce back just like they did in 2022, they showed up words of hope for that. one of very to show up for us i just hope support the time was lot. >> over told the district 6 council member kevin jenkins did visit the care center to look at the damage and homies

empowerment is seeking monetary donations on their website, which is homies empowerment. dot com in studio. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> thank you, dan. the owners of the ace are considering trying to signed a three-year lease extension at the oakland coliseum. they need somewhere to play for the next few years. in exchange, though, the city is playing hardball, asking that the a's leave behind their branding and logo when they head to vegas. city officials also are asking that the team have a role in bringing in mlb expansion team to oakland and they want the a's to sell their half of the coliseum. the a's portion of the coliseum cause 45 million dollars? they have until april to pay that money to alameda county. >> coming up, oakland police are warning about a rise in smash and grab robberies. more on the strategy thieves are using in most of the cases. plus the famous horn barbecue

>> acclaimed west oakland barbecue spot horn bbq is closing one of its locations for good owner. matt horne says he would not be reopening its a mandela parkway location following a series of setbacks which include a fire that gutted the restaurant's interior last year. it came

just days after he had posted about the popular restaurant being defaced with graffiti. horton says he's not throwing in the towel completely and he's still committed to relaunching horn bbq. just not on the mandela parkway. we spoke with him earlier today. he says he's not giving up on oakland. >> so there's a few occasions for the past month or so that we've been in conversation with so hopefully one of those will pay out. the plan definitely is. the reopening was always the reopened. we're not going anywhere. >> warren has 2 other restaurants in oakland, coward and maddie's old-fashioned. the new location for horn bbq is still being scout. and we will, of course, keep you posted. >> oakland police are warning about a spike in smash-and-grab robberies. they say several recent victims. we're just sitting in their cars when thieves walked up, smashed the passenger window and grabbed things from inside. police say they'll be sending out additional officers to parts of the city where they've seen a surge in this kind of crime. police say

robberies have increased 32% compared to the same time last year. >> police in rohnert park are warning the public about an increase in vehicle thefts targeting chevy camaro as they say thieves are using technology that simulates a key fob to gain access to the vehicles and then driving off in them. anyone who owns a pchevy camaro should take extr precautions such as installing a kill switch or installing a gps tracker. >> worried parents in san jose today citizen app video here shows them waiting for their kids to be released from piedmont hills high school after students were under a shelter-in-place order. as police look for a suspect, they say the suspect made his way toward campus while trying to get away from officers. no word on any arrests. the shelter-in-place was lifted, but this is the seeond shelter-in-place issued for a san jose high school in the past 2 days. our weather time here as we get a live look there. beautiful night in san

francisco. you can see the winds on this picture. and boy, that was some nice, bright, beautiful sunshine today. it was. it was nice and warm. but again, that wind was pretty powerful. lawrence karnow here. >> lawrence, the wind is back tonight. yeah, it's going to whip specially into early tomorrow morning for the commute and then by noon it is long gone. we're going to clear out your skies. we're talking about really a gorgeous friday afternoon. maybe the nyces friday afternoon. we've had all year long as high pressure is taking over. it's going to settle in for the weekend to means. we've got a great weekend ahead. >> all right. now you've got clear skies, windswept skies out there right now. that's the way it's going to stay overnight. tonight and tomorrow morning. but the winds will be picking up as we head toward the early part of the morning hours by the afternoon, the winds go away. the warm temperatures are left behind many places by tomorrow. going to be up in the 70's this weekend. yeah, it's going to be a gorgeous weekend. the final weekend of winter definitely feeling like spring. as you can see those temperatures on the warm side. well above the average for this time of year, it is still 63 degrees in half moon bay.

61. it typical. 63 even in san francisco, a 57 cooling down now and saying lena, but get those offshore winds get all kinds of different temperatures out there. you can see what's happening. high pressure building into the northeast. also, you've got that area of low pressure spinning around near southern california. and the difference between the 2 really creating a lot of the gusty winds. so we'll see that again for tomorrow as we see another round, those gusty winds in the morning hours. then by the afternoon, all of a sudden that low pressure kind of casey's. we start to see those going away. that means we're left with lots of sunshine and warm temperatures. but a low rate forecast. we've got changes coming our way this weekend looks good but plenty of sunshine throughout the weekend. watch out for some showers in the southern sierra nevada. but then late next week as well. yet all changes rain makes return to the bay area. so let's enjoy that sunshine while we tomorrow. you're looking about 71 downtown san francisco. 73 in the mission. 72 in daly city been even 70 in pacifica inside the bay are looking temperatures in the 60's and the 70's and working their way down the peninsula. nice warm weather by tomorrow afternoon.
