touchdown in oregon this afternoon. the post flight inspection revealing that missing piece of the plane kron four's dan thorn joining us live tonight from sfo dam. >> no, well, this is just the latest in a series of problems for united planes leaving sfo coming back to sfo and these mechanical issues are becoming pretty concerning for united passengers. and the airline says they do not know when this external panel came off of the plane today. >> another issue for united airlines flight leaving sfo after landing at rogue valley international medford airport friday afternoon. a united aircraft was found without an external panel. medford airport spokesperson says they were forced to briefly pause operations on the runway to look for any debris. none was found. this is a very minor incident in the grand scheme

of things. retired commercial airline pilot doug rice says. >> the external panel is an aluminum fairing which helps smooth the air against the plane making for a smoother ride. this specific boeing 7.37. is a 25 year-old aircraft. and rice says at that age metal fatigue can set these aircraft, go through a significant amount of maintenance they should be catching these things. what we're learning now is that we have to be more aware of these things as they go through maintenance and double checking and triple checking the this latest issue for united is making some passengers feel uneasy on thursday. a flight approaching sfl had a hydraulic leak with some smoke seen by the landing gear. >> last week, a japan bound plane lost a wheel during takeoff and had to make an emergency landing in los angeles. and on monday, a united flight bound for sfo from australia was forced to

turn around because of a maintenance issue. >> i think it's a little bit the scary the fact that this keeps coming up all the sudden. and i i don't know if it's because we haven't been aware and now we are. always said, and it's it's an immediate issue that we're dealing with. >> it's scary for people. united spokesperson says there wasn't an emergency landing in oregon because there was no indication of damage during the flight. they're now going to do an investigation to iind out what happened. >> will the faa says that they're also going to be looking into this incident. as for any injuries, united says of the 130 plus passengers and crew that are on board. no one was hurt. reporting live at sfo. dan thorn kron. 4 news. dan, thank you. an update to the alaska airlines flight where a door blew off mid-flight earlier this year. it's been revealed a seat belt saved the life of a passenger during that frightening

ordeal. according to a new lawsuit filed on behalf of 7 of those passengers, one of them said his body lifted out of the seat and suction tore off his shoes and socks. >> and left bruises on his legs. the incident happened in january over portland. the plane landed safely. the department of justice has opened up a criminal investigation. a body was recovered in the oakland estuary this afternoon. alameda firefighters shared this photo with us earlier today as crews were getting ready to go into the water following reports of a man having trouble swimming, the crew deployed rescue swimmers and searched for the man for about an hour before locating the victim under water. they were pronounced dead at the scene. officials are working to identify that victim. the united states coast guard is investigating an oil spill after officials say one of its both accidentally discharged approximately 500 gallons of diesel fuel off the coast of northern california. they say it happened this morning

4th with a rifle in hand allegedly threatening to shoot those who have fired him. when deputies arrived savant este ran off. he didn't make it far, though, pulling into a parking lot on todd and standish roads opening fire on deputies. after firing several times on test got back in his car and drove back to the restaurant before continuing a chase that ultimately led him to crashing his vehicle at the time of the crash of on tested multiple gunshot wounds and injuries. he died at the scene during the crossfire. 4 deputies were injured as well. 3 of them are recovering at home. the 4th deputies suffered a head injury and is still in the hospital tonight. we now know that deputy suffered their injuries after another accidentally hit them with their patrol car. meanwhile, officials say cervantes died due to blunt force trauma likely due to the

crash. but his official cause of death is still pending. new at 11 deputies in marion county have arrested. 21 year-old julian sanchez of sandra fell for allegedly selling marijuana products to children. they say sanchez had more than $20,000, marijuana products at his apartment and in a storage locker. along with $17,000 in cash, detectives determined he was selling them to kids of various high schools after getting into his 2 cell phones, sanchez has been booked into the marion county jail. a judge is appointed a special master to oversee the women's prison in dublin. the order came as part of a lawsuit filed by 8 inmates claiming of abuse from some of the prison workers. comes after the fbi rated that prison earlier this week. as we reported, agents seized computers and documents back in 2021. the fbi also raided the facility and that led to the conviction of a warden charged with multiple counts of abuse for ordering

incarcerated women to pose naked 7. others were also found guilty of abuse. a member of the boogaloo boys has been sentenced to life in federal prison today for the murder and attempted murder of 2 oakland security guards in 2020, robert justice junior was convicted of murder and attempted murder last year, according to prosecutors, justice was the driver of the vehicle in which stephen fired gunshots that killed a protective services officer. dave underwood and the attempted murder of a second federal officer in a drive-by shooting. korea was sentenced to 41 years in prison back in 2022, both justice and korea were followers of the so-called boogaloo movement. a loosely organized anti-government group that believes a second u.s. civil war was eminent. dozens of

protesters who blocked the bay bridge in november to call for a ceasefire in gaza are being penalized for their actions. a san francisco judge ordering 78 of the 80 demonstrators to perform 5 hours of community service representation for the protesters say they have agreed to pay more than $4,000 in restitution to avoid criminal charges. it's about $57 for each person being punished. the money will be given to those who needed to be evacuated from the bridge during that protest. >> happening right now, caltrans has closed a stretch of 6.80, southbound and it will stay closed through monday. it's for paving project that was supposed to start back in january, but it had been delayed due to rain. 6.80, is closed between the 5.80, in 6, 80 connector in pleasanton and that closure goes all the way through highway 84 and son all about 9 miles. the closure will stretch through 4 o'clock monday morning. caltrans says this weekend closures actually going to help lower the number of nightly closures. they'll need to finish up this

>> more affordable housing is coming to the north bay pg. any is donating more than a dozen acres of land in nevado to habitat for humanity. the 13 acre development is expected to be the largest affordable home site in the state housing. more than 300 people pg and e says there's going to also be parks, courtyards trails and at least 10 acres of open space. >> the need is so great. you know, when we had 20 homes available, we had over 700 families apply our last project in redwood city. so to be standing here in this community where the average home price is 1.6 million dollars to be able to bring affordable homeownership to the community, to the county to the city is just remarkable. >> construction is expected to

begin later on this year. city of oakland is lifting advisory for lake merritt after the water turned red from a minor algae bloom lake tech, the organization responsible for the fountain in the lake that prevents algae tells kron 4 a mix of things like nutrient runoff and wastewater treatment plants typically caused the algae growth. the bloom will likely come back. >> from time to time, different conditions, whether that's climate or weather water quality can lead to them to grow rapidly, get out of control. and that's when we call that a bloom. and the reason that's a problem is when they grow to that extent, they will eventually start to die off. and when that happens, we have rapid depletion of oxygen in the water and that often lead to fish kills. >> kerr says following this year's wet winter water temperatures were significantly higher compared to this time last year. those warmer water temps may have been the cause for that minor bloom.

they pick themselves up off the age it free agent floor after losing linebacker eric kendricks to the cowboys. now they signed former packers linebacker damond, a campbell. so a one-year deal, campbell comes from to the forty-niners after 3 seasons in green bay where he was named the first team, all pro in 2021. after recording a career-best 146 tackles. but over the last 2 seasons, he has missed 10 games because of knee and ankle injuries. so campbell is expected to play in place of an injured re greenlaw who is, you know, was injured during the super bowl after he tore his achilles trying to take the field. so obviously we're hoping to make up some ground there now. i didn't take long for jimmy g to make up some ground grapple out. found his way back into the league. just almost quick as he found so bad that he's in the nfc west, though, this time he was released by the raiders. >> forty-niners fans is not coming back here is actually going to 7 california where he will be in la with the rams.

he signed a one-year deal but will not be able to play immediately, of course, because in 2024 he was suspended for the first 2 games, which is this year. obviously because of violating the nfl's performance enhancing drug policy. so he'll miss a couple of those at the top of the season. on the other hand, this guy will play another game aaron. donald, he is hanging his jersey for good. 32 year-old defensive tackle for the la rams as one of the most decorated in history, especially at his position. now was named offensive player 3 times with the year 3 times. and then also you, that's a world champion. the 10 time pro bowler. he has 7 consecutive first team, all pro selections and he's tallied 111 6 that tackles 6 throughout his career since being 13th overall and the 2014 nfl draft. so the rams they did announce today with the post on x in, quarterback, rejoice, quarterbacks, rejoice
