after car crashes into a san francisco bus. stop. the trial surrounding a deadly 2018 tesla crash in the south bay will soon be underway. we're live at the courthouse with what's happening today. and investigators are trying to figure out what started a fire at a high school gymnasium in pleasanton. >> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news good morning. thank you for joining us at 08:00am. i'm james fletcher and i'm reyna harvey in for darya folsom today. the weekend was nice today will be nice. yeah. and then. yeah. and then we've got john with what justice spring starts officially tomorrow. it's going feel like winter again. so we kind of flip flopped. >> because this past few days, your last days of winter have felt really nice in like an early taste of spring. >> today we're going to continue that trend with some really nice sunny skies eventually anyways. we've got a lot of low cloud cover out there this morning. this deep area of fog that has settled into the north bay is

resulting in a few areas of low visibility from novato up santa rosa out towards the altamont pass in livermore to so do watch for that as we make our way into the afternoon, those skies will clear really quickly rain for abundantly sunny skies later on today. we're starting the morning, fairly cool in the 40's to 50's. but that's not going to last. we do eventually get to some 70's later on today and for a few spots further inland in the north bay could get close to 80 degrees this afternoon. last day of winter. going to be a warm one before we cool things down into spring. i'm talking all those changes as we go right now. all right. on the eve of let's get a look morning drive 18 minutes traveling into the city this morning. >> no major crashes or accidents on the bridges. so that's the good news. san mateo bridge. 22 minutes there. 82 want to want here it is. summer feel ridge about 18 minutes and the golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls. 35 minute ride. >> okay. do too. is the time. and this morning we continue to follow the deadly crash involving a family of 4 in san

francisco's west portal neighborhood where police have confirmed a 3rd person has died from their injuries. >> palmer's michael thomas is live in san francisco with this tragic story. good morning, michael. >> really a tragedy and heartbreak to say the least 3 out of those 4 family members now dead due to this accident over the weekend. the one survivor is actually a baby that's still in the hospital, listed under critical condition. i'm gonna step out the way just you can go ahead and get a look at this scene. you can see that there's still a tape and flowers and we're going zoom in for you. you can see what it looks like this morning. they've people have left a stroller along with some shoes and we've got video actually from previously over the weekend. we're going to get that up on your screen. according to officials. it happened on saturday afternoon here in san francisco's west portal neighborhood on lowell street. now, officials say that there was a driver of an suv that slammed into a muni bus shelter, causing to take the lives of 2 people on scene

and then one person yesterday they were driving eastbound on alloa neighbors tell us it was a family of 4. the 2 that died on the scene they say was a father and a child. and the mother. he's the one that passed away in the hospital yesterday. that infant is the only survivor of one out of the 4 currently in critical condition. police say the driver of that suv was also injured at the accident. they say that everything is still under investigation, but they do not believe traffic engineering was a factor. now we did speak with a sustainable transportation advocate who says that he started a petition to actually close this intersection to all cars because of the accident, saying that it's a busy, busy area and there should be no cars currently here. take a listen. within one block of here, there's a library. >> there's multiple schools as a park in a you know, there's a church, there's doctors offices. there's merchant corridor. this is not the place they should have covered. car traffic going through and some people want to see it safe.

>> now back out here this car is actually covering the scene. but you can see just how busy it is in. for instance, this woman is making a right, which is there's a sign that says yot can only make a right, however, there have been a lot of people making a left. we're going zoom back in to give you that last life. look, you can see that caution tape, lots of debris. and again, somebody has placed the stroller along with shoes that are symbolizing the parents. and of course, those children lost their lives. as we get more details from officials regarding that driver and an update on that infant that's in the hospital. we'll keep you updated. there is a vigil that set to happen tonight at 5 o'clock this morning in san francisco. i'm michael thomas. i will send it back to to live in the studio. thank you, michael. >> happening today, pretrial proceedings are set to start this morning in the case of a 2018 fatal crash that involved a tesla. now lawsuit alleges that tesla's autopilot system caused that crash kron four's will tran in san jose live this morning.

>> with the latest on details today will. >> well, james, this will begin in 45 minutes from now in the courtroom right behind me. this is the building to superior court in san jose. let me show you the video now. the family of walter, they will be in court while to want died from this crash. nearly 6 full years ago. here's how it all went down. he was driving southbound 101 through mountain view in his tesla model x he engaged the auto pilot program then he proceeded to play video games on his iphone. all of a sudden his tesla of years out of control slams into a divider, ripping the car basically into and then he would die a short time later from his injuries. his family is suing tesla for many reasons believing the auto pilot system failed to see the markings on the ground. also claiming that

tesla's self-driving pilot program lead consumers to believe including walter that they were fully safe, which is why he was playing video games believing he would not be in danger. tesla said that the auto pilot program never said that it was fully safe that you would never get into a crash. he would just we're minimize the chances of you getting into a crash. they also claim that program tried to warn walter wall multiple times to retake the car, but he did not which ultimately ended up in a crash where he died. we will try to talk to the attorneys before they heae into the courtroom. but again, this is tesla on trial and anything to do with tesla is monumental because it is driven by millions of many millions of people in america and many more, of course, across the world. so tesla moves the needle and many people in the auto industry. of course, we'll be watching

what's going on with this trial. james, back to you. >> thank you very much. well, meantime, tesla's settled a multi-million dollar racial discrimination lawsuit. this is actually the second settlement stemming from a lawsuit filed india's a black man who worked as an elevator operator at the company's fremont plant. yes, as his colleagues left racist graffiti in the restrooms and regularly use racist epithets. federal jury previously awarded diaz 3.2 million dollars in damages. the terms of his second settlement are confidential. tesla is denying allegations of racism and they say they have a track record equal employment opportunity. >> well, another big story that we're following. a fire breaks out inside the gym at amador valley high school in pleasanton last night. it's now out. but you can see here in this video, what it was like while it was still burning officials with the pleasanton unified school district say they haven't been able to survey the damage yet. firefighters are still looking for the cause of that fire.

>> school officials say the high school will hold classes today, but obviously >> they'll be cordoning off the new this morning, the nine-mile stretch of 6.80, from pleasanton to seminole has officially reopened. it opened at 2.30 this morning. the freeway was closed over the weekend so they can remove and replace some of theory rated pavement. caltrans says they shrank 30 nights of closures into just a single weekend to do all that work. >> police are investigating the suspicious death of a man who was found badly burned contra costa fire crews called police on saturday after discovering a person who was severely burned and deceased right in the back area of the 2900 block mail in court crime scene investigators took over the case. persons cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner. >> happening today, alameda county district attorney pamela price will address the public this morning. this after the registrar of voters receive more than 120,000 signatures in support of

>> we are back 8.13, is the time. and in the east bay, people laced up their shoes for a 5 k shamrock run and walk in dublin yesterday morning. hundreds of people coming together for the annual events. many wearing green, as you can see for saint patrick's day. family stuck around afterwards for the city's 39th annual saint patrick's festival. more than 250 vendors showcasing their homemade goods in traditional irish foods. and it was and double in the tri valley. nothing but sunshine and mid 70's antiwar. it was really nice. it was maybe 2 or just walking slowly at yeah. we didn't know jackets the blank

around 3 inches of rainfall on the way as we move towards the weekend, much of the bay area could see around 3 quarters of an inch. so this is definitely going to be another rainmaker in the works. it's not like we're completely done with it just yet. just had a nice little break over the past few days, temperatures today will be in the 60's towards the coastline and a lot of 70's elsewhere in the bay, south bay, temperatures solidly in the mid 70's with san jose at 76 degrees. pretty similar for the east bay, too. with those low to mid 70's continuing out that direction, our warmest spots today, the lay benicia fairfield and vacaville just shy of 80 degrees getting up to 77. and just when you thought summer had arrived, wellspring gets here tomorrow and winter kind of makes its return with temperatures gradually slipping into the low 60's by next weekend, friday night into saturday being our best opportunity for rainfall. rain, right. john, thank you for at your morning. drive a bridge right now. 18 minutes heading into the city this morning.

>> mateo bridge around 26 minutes. they are 80 to 101. the richmond sandra fell bridge 16 minutes and the golden gate bridge. 37 of the toast. 32 minutes. >> 8.16, the time. and in the east bay, a car slammed into a city national bank in downtown oakland during an attempted robbery. it happened on broadway and 12th. police say there are about 4 or 5 people inside that car when it drove into the bank a little before 6 o'clock friday morning. once inside, though, police say the would-be burglars were unable to access anything of value. so they ran off. no injuries reported. police still looking for those suspects this morning. the petaluma police department says more than 30 vehicles were targeted in what appears to be a car break-in spree. the thefts happened all over the city saturday night. officers say happened at the petaluma village premium outlets. saint vincent's high school shirt hotel just to name a few. police department is asking anybody who lives in the area to check your home surveillance cameras. you may have captured these thieves in

the act. >> well, in the south bay, a man is recovering from injuries after being hit by a drunk driver on to 80. this is the scene on 2.80, north of vine street around 11 friday night. chp says they're not sure why the man was walking on the interstate. they say why bmw hit the victim had on when police arrived, the victim was unresponsive and taken to the hospital. the driver was arrested. no word yet on how the victim is doing. and a judge appointed a special master to oversee the women's prison in dublin. it's all part of a lawsuit filed by 8 inmates claiming abuse from some of the prison workers. he's also comes after the fbi raided the prison last week as we first reported, agents seized computers and documents since 2021. 7 prison employees either plea guilty or convicted of abuse. and another case is still pending. >> former president donald trump now is causing some controversy on the campaign trail. it was during a rally this weekend that he warned of what he said would be a bloodbath if he loses the

election. they also called undocumented immigrants. animals lost. a correspondent hannah brandt has the latest on that. >> trump's remarks are drawing sharp criticism from many democrats and some republicans as well. but there are those that are defending him. >> at a rally in ohio, former president donald trump was talking about his plan to tax foreign made cars when he made a dark production. we're going to put 100% tariff on every single car. >> that comes across the line. i'm going to be able to sell those guys. if i get elected. now, if i do get elected, it's going to be a bloodbath for the whole. that's going to be the least of it. it's going to be a bloodbath for the country. and in his speech, he also attacked undocumented immigrants. i don't know if you call up people in some cases, they're not people in my opinion. these are animals. okay. >> and we have to stop critics slammed the remarks. what does that mean? he's going to exact a bloodbath. there's something wrong here. congresswoman nancy pelosi told cnn trump's comments underscore how important it is for democrats

to reelect president biden. we just have to win this election on nbc's meet the press, republican senator bill cassidy also criticized the comments. clearly the president's rhetoric is reflected poorly. many americans continue to wonder should president trump be president? but on cbs, trump's former vice president mike pence defended the bloodbath comments. president was clearly talking about the impact of of imports devastating the american automotive industry. what congressman mike turner told abc while he disagrees with the wording, he's more focused on trump's border policies. donald trump is the only candidate in this race. it's going to be able to to fix this crisis. >> in a statement the trump campaign said he was clearly talking about the economic consequences of another biden term, accusing those who criticized him of taking his words out of context in washington. i'm hannah brandt. >> 20 is the time in 3 women here in california are suing starbucks for allegedly charging more for non-dairy milk. the suit accuses the coffee giant of discriminating against customers who are

>> on the north bay, a man is recovering from major injuries after a drunk driver hit the man's car rohnert park police here. the pictures of the aftermath. it happened just after 2.30, yesterday morning riding the ex intersection of rohnert park expressway and commerce boulevard. police say a woman driving a red toyota pickup truck have 2 men, ronnie with her when she crashed into the grace. a sign on they say the driver failed a sobriety test, but she and her 2 passengers are expected to be okay. however, the man driving the grease ion had to be extracted from the car, taken to the hospital for surgery. we don't have any word on his condition at this time. >> well, a new study this morning is naming san francisco as the number one city in the u.s. for being ev friendly. the study by icy cars found that san francisco

has lots of chargers available and has improved their ev infrastructure. in fact, in the bay area, including san jose and oakland, there are almost 16,000 chargers per every 412 residents. that's the most in the entire country beating la and san diego in california. i see cars use data from the department of energy's alternative fuels data center for the study. in the east bay. alameda county has received 30 million dollars for street improvements. u.s. department of transportation gave the money to the bay greenway. project, which is working to install protected bikeways, improve pedestrian crossings and put more benches and lighting at bus stops. congressional representative barbara lee and eric swalwell support the project. the street improvements will stretch from the lake merritt bart station to the bayfair bart station. >> that marriage rates gone up and gore says gone down of the pandemic research from the cdc shows that the number of

we've got some nice conditions shaping up outside behind. yeah, it was nice over the weekend. it's a crate today. tomorrow worries the different story. good morning, john. kind of slide downhill into spring. it was a beautiful last few days of winter. and today, the very last day of the season looking great as well. we've got 70's for your highs today. the last time we'll see that number for a little while looking outside in the east bay hills. we do have some cloud cover across the bay. this is a low layer of clouds and some cases a little bit of fog up in the north bay and out into the east bay hills skies. clear out really quickly, though, and were set up for more sunshine this afternoon. another dry day today. and another day for your last day of winter. that is going to be very comfortable if not a little warm towards the afternoon. 40's to 50's for current temperatures still need that light jacket for your morning. brisk walk so far. but later on today, it's back to the shorts and t-shirts. much like you did this weekend. i'm talking a cooler forecast as well as rain in your forecast. still to come. all right, john,

thank you for that. look at your morning commute heading into the city right on 19 minutes. no major delays or issues right now. >> san mateo bridge, 30 minutes. we've been a little busy there. richmond center fell bridge 14 minute ride and the golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls, 30 minutes. >> okay. more trouble for united airlines this time. a flight leaving sfo. but this time the problem wasn't discovered until the plane actually took off and landed in oregon. cropper's dan thorn walks us through it. >> another issue for united airlines flight leaving sfo after landing at rogue valley international medford airport friday afternoon. united aircraft was found without an external panel. medford airport spokesperson says they were forced to briefly pause operations on the runway to look for any debris. none was found. this is a very minor incident in the grand scheme of things. retired commercial airline pilot doug rice says.

>> the external panel is an aluminum fairing which helps smooth the air against the plane. >> making for a smoother ride. this specific boeing 7.37. is a 25 year-old aircraft. and rice says at that age metal fatigue can set these aircraft, go through a significant amount of maintenance they should be catching these things. what we're learning now is that we have to be more aware of these things as they go through maintenance and double checking and triple checking the this latest issue for united is making some passengers feel uneasy on thursday. a flight approaching sfl had a hydraulic leak with some smoke seen by the landing gear. >> last week, a japan-bound plane lost a wheel during takeoff and had to make an emergency landing in los angeles. and on monday, a united flight bound for sfo from australia was forced to turn around because of a maintenance issue.

>> i think it's a little bit the scary the fact that this keeps coming up on the set. and i i don't know if it's because we haven't been aware and now we are. always said, and it's it's an immediate issue that we're dealing with. >> it's scary for people. a united spokesperson says there wasn't an emergency landing in oregon because there was no indication of damage during the flight. they're now going to do an investigation to find out what happened at sfo. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> oakland police are now investigating 2 separate friday night shootings. first happened around 10, 30 friday night on 100 and second avenue. not far from international boulevard. as for iran's elementary school, police say they found a san francisco man shot later died at the scene. an oakland man was taken into custody for that shooting. police have not shared any details on that arrest. have a second shooting happened just before 01:00am saturday on international boulevard. right on the corner of 8th avenue near clinton

park. well, police on the scene say they found evidence of a shooting could not find a victim. police later learned a person suffering from gunshot wounds took themselves to the hospital. >> in the north bay, we have new details now about a shooting at a car chase that injured 4 sonoma county sheriff's deputies. officials released 9-1-1, audio and body camera footage. now we're going to walk you through both. we just want to warn you that some may find the video disturbing. >> yes, i we haven't got become for many are trading desk. you've like a ripe for funding. >> authorities say that jose luis, sir vontaze showed up in a nightclub on stony point. and todd rhodes after being kicked out the night before police say he came to the business with an ak 47 style assault rifle threatening to shoot people deputies on taste drove off. investigators say he eventually pulled into a parking lot on todd and standish roads and that is where opened fire on deputies with that assault rifle. and here is a portion of that as it played out. investigators

say after firing several times servant has got back into his car and back to the club before then leading police on a chase that ended in this crash. cervantes died at the scene. it was during a shoot out that 4 deputies were injured. 3 of them are recovering at home. but the 4th deputy suffered a head injury when he was run over by a fellow deputy in the confusion. deputies still in the hospital. friday, a possible road rage incident led to stabbings in sunnyvale, according to police officers arrived at about 03:00pm in the area of lawrence expressway and our keys avenue after reports of several men fighting in the street, officers found 2 men suffering from stab wounds. they were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. then after a brief search, police found and arrested 2 suspects both booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. in the south

bay. a motorcyclist in sunnyvale died in an accident sunday morning. it happened at about 07:00am. police say the motorcyclist was traveling lawrence expressway and was making a left turn onto arc east when car heading southbound crashed into him. the motorcyclist died at the scene. the driver of the car suffered minor injuries. police say at this point there are no signs that drugs or alcohol were involved. >> all in the east bay, antioch, police are looking for a driver who hit a pedestrian and his drove off. happened after one. 30 am on saturday. police say a kia sedan struck a man near wilbur avenue and drove away that man unfortunately died at the scene. >> emergency crews responded to a crash in san francisco's pacific heights neighborhood. >> citizen app video shows a car flipped over on its side. this is on jackson street right near the house of prime rib. so was his go. fire crews

say the driver of the car also crashed into parked cars. say the driver was taken to the hospital for treatment. no word yet on what caused that crash to happen. >> happening tomorrow, the sfmta will discuss where it plans to install 33 speed cameras next year in san francisco, transit officials are looking to install some of them in places like school zones and areas that have seen sideshows officials say in the first 2 months of operations, they'll send out warnings. but then after that fines will be sent to those caught breaking the law. >> we would be very happy if this program earns no revenue. what we're trying to do is change behavior. >> you know, the locations for the cameras is what they're going to talk about at the sfmta meeting tomorrow afternoon. >> well, social media giant meta is under investigation. according to a new wall street journal report, report claims federal prosecutors and the fda are leading a new probe into man is alleged role in facilitating the self illegal drugs and other substances

moon bay where a pickup truck caught on fire on highway one. happened saturday in the afternoon. cal fire officials tell us the driver striding down the highway when caught on fire then slamming into 2 other cars. the accident forced the highway to have to be shut down temporarily. firefighters say no injuries were reported. >> last week we told you that the university of california was seeing a jump in applications, but state lawmakers say the admissions department needs to make sure they prioritize in rolling california students in 2021. lawmakers created the budget act to increase the number of california residents at u c schools. but a report from the legislative analyst's office says that the uc system is it meeting the budget ax goal for california student enrollment. they're short by about 1400 students. and this concern is also spreading to csu schools. we're out of states. students are increasingly edging out california residents at schools like san diego state and cal poly, you see

administrators say they will have to rely on state funding to pay for more. california resident enrollment by 2030. new this morning. the state board of education is moving forward with plans to add its science assessment to the california school dashboard. it's all part of the state school accountability system using performance status starting last year, school and student groups will receive one of 5 dashboard colors. the lowest performance level will be designated with red. the highest performance would be in blue. you won't see the signs assessment, though, on the dashboard until 2025 because the state needs 3 years of data for the model to be accurate. >> for your health research shows that free school lunches could actually help the fight against childhood obesity. study published pediatrics books that schools with a universal free milk policy, the town schools that participated had a 2% decrease childhood obesity compared to non participating schools. researchers say that because school lunches tend to be more nutritious than meals even outside of schools.
