from the 2020 class fire that came about 75 yards from our front door. too close for comfort for gretchen and rick mullen, d who have experience 3 fires while living in their santa rosa home for the last 22 years, they have ensured their home with farmers insurance. earlier this month, the couple got a letter from the company saying their policy was canceled field i feel scared. we've never filed a claim. >> and it's all due to our address being close to a wildfire area. >> the to quickly hired insurance brokers to find a new insurance company. the search that's getting more difficult by the day. and we were denied by 157 insurance companies. no one will take us. i mean, even today i received 7 o'clock. the niles, if the couple does not get insurance, they can lose their home. the state does offer a last resort option. the california fair plan melendez have applied for it, but they

say it's not an affordable option. costa, 6% higher and it's less coverage for us. my husband is retired were on a fixed income. and we don't have a lot of options. gretchen says they can't even sell their home, putting them between a rock and a hard place. my home just got valued. nobody's going to buy my home. know if they can't get insurance and the melendez are not alone. thousands of californians are feeling the pain of the homeowners insurance crisis. many companies have announced limiting or stopping new policies altogether due to inflation and increased risk of wildfires. janet ruiz with the insurance information institute says the insurance industry is working with the state to bounce back in the last 10 years from very >> premium. that wheat we pay down a so that's not really sustainable. but we would we want to be here. we're working with california department of

insurance insurance commissioner ricardo, lara, announce a new strategy to keep private insurance companies in the state. all a part of the deal to consider future ris and climate change. one setting prices. senator mike mcguire says legislation needs to be passed to protect homeowners. we need a pathway. >> for that homeowner. >> to get renewed once again in back into the traditional insurance policy. what i'd like is a moratorium to force these private insurance companies to stay in california at affordable rates that we can pay for insurance to keep a shelter at home for us. >> home insurance, regulation reform is being discussed at the capitol. but people like them a lenghi say if something isn't done soon, they could lose it all and they're not alone. they say their neighbors are going through the same struggles. i'm sara stinson reporting in santa rosa. back to you.

>> thank you, sarah. tough situation there. well, we have a tragic update now to what has already been a devastating story. san francisco police have confirmed the infant who was seriously injured in a crash at a bus stop over the weekend has died. the crash is saturday in the city's west portal neighborhood. police say a family of 4 was waiting for the bus. they were headed to the zoo when a speeding suv barreled into them, killing the parents as well as their one year-old son. they've been identified as 40 year-old diego cardoso. they levy era. 38 year-old that killed a moncada ramos, pinto and joaquin ramos, pinto de vieira and the youngest family member. now that infant and who have been hospitalized since the crash. we learned tonight that 3 month-old infant who hasn't named has also died. so all 4 people are now dead. we also learned today the driver of the suv, 78 year-old mary falling lau is still in the hospital, but no longer technically in

custody, meaning she is free to go home once she is able she could face a number of charges, though, in the coming days. her attorney says she is fully cooperating with investigators. the chp has released dash camera footage here of a freeway shooting 18 year to 38 in hayward. this happened around 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. you see the suspect rolled down his window and aim a gun at the victim's car as he exits the freeway. the victim, fortunately was not hurt. but you can see the damage done to the car. investigators identified and arrested the suspect today. he faces multiple felony charges. police in antioch are investigating a deadly dirt bike crash that killed a person seriously injured. another police say 20 year-old guy riding a dirt bike late today ran a stop sign at the intersection of el and west 4th street and collided with a van. the driver of the van only identified as a 52 year-old man was taken to a

hospital. he is said to be in critical condition. police say they're not releasing the names of these people until the victims. families are notified. ongoing problems of shoplifting and loitering. teenagers now have a bay area police chief reaching out to safeway executives sebastopol as police chief ronald elson wrote a letter to safeway's regional. president expressing his concerns about the safeway on north main just down the street from adelaide high school. he says the problem of these kids loitering and engaging and theft of been creating problems for customers, especially in the afternoon when school lets out in a letter. chief nelson also says his department has been providing additional patrols during those busy after school hours, but says they don't have the resources to do that all the time. the chief one safe way to hire security at last prevention staff and work together with the police department. safely. a spokesperson reached out to us

tonight. they say they're looking into the chiefs. concerns will keep you posted there. more than 2 weeks after election day. prop one is officially now projected to pass backed by governor newsom. prop one authorizes the state to borrow about 6 and a half billion dollars to tackle the state's homelessness crisis. that money would go toward housing and mental health treatment programs. opponents expressed concerns saying the bond would simply throw a lot of money at the program without generating adequate results. the governor, though, reactive online saying this is a huge victory for doing things radically different when it comes to tackling homelessness. now it's time to get to work, repairing the damage caused by decades of broken promises and neglect to those suffering from severe mental illness. some lanes are still shut down in sunnyvale. thanks to a water main break. as you can see, just one lane is getting by in each direction along fair oaks

>> but serving crime in the south bay, a man is behind bars tonight accused of hiding a camera in a starbucks restroom. and san jose police say 35 year-old louis juarez junior planted the camera at the location off west taylor street in coleman. officials say an employee at the starbucks notice the hidden camera january 31st. under the bathroom sink and then called 9-1-1. by then, though, there was footage of 91 people, police say, including kids as young as 4. >> first heard about those like that's scary. i don't people are thinking for that's i'm glad that they caught the person. this incident is very scary. want the public to be aware of their surroundings. things like this happen, unfortunately. and it is scary. >> during the arrest, police say they also found those 20 far as his home. investigators are now looking for the 91 victims caught on camera. if you're at that starbucks january, 30th, the day before it was found. and you think

you may have been in there, you're asked to contact the police department. starbucks released a statement about this. it reads, this is a deeply disturbing incident and we're grateful for the quick and thorough response from police in arresting the suspect. we cannot overstate the importance of providing a safe environment for our customers and partners. new details tonight in a pleasant hill shooting where 2 people are now dead after a shootout where the people didn't even know each other. police say 63 year-old peter popovich was working as a marijuana delivery driver yesterday afternoon of condo complex on twin bridge circle. that's when 2 people who are armed tried to rob him popovich was legally armed and a shootout ensued. popovich was killed and police say one of the attackers. 21 year-old van davis has also died. the other attacker took off. he's not been caught. police have not released a description of that person. there are new plants in cupertino to replace a

nearly 100 year-old bridge. 850,000 bucks has been secured to raise mcclellan road. the bridge is a major east-west connector in the city above stevens creek walk, bike, cupertino. that group has been pushing the city to create an underpass for pedestrians and cyclists. the group's chair tells us the road as a blind curve. >> cars are just coming around the corner. and so if you're a senior citizen and you walk slow or you have small children and you walk a little slower, it could be a little bit scary to cross that either of these intersections. >> the city is now trying to come up with more money to make this project a reality. all right. let's go up to the high country, taking a live look here. interstate 80 at donner summit. lots of snow still on the side of the roads, but they have been dry just as we have for a while now. so the roads are clear. chief meteorologist lawrence karnow back with us now. lawrence, we're going to get some rain. they're getting

snow. yeah, they're going to get a whole lot of snow coming our way. not just a few inches. we're talking about feet of snow. >> over the few days and into the weekend and next week as well. so these winter storms late this season. yeah. spring storms cold enough generating still level right down to about 5,000 feet or so. so if you're traveling up in the high country, you've got to really watch the storms carefully. check out the forecast here on kron 4 to get you up there safely because they're going to be coming on and off over the next 7 to 10 days, at least maybe even beyond snow level, starting out of 5,000 feet or so. we're expecting one to 2 feet of snow above 5,000 feet as well. so expect some travel delays. course, you're probably rather some1chain controls at times and some gusty winds, real wintry conditions. but storm watch has been posted in the sierra nevada from friday. continue until saturday night as we're expecting that snow to move in tomorrow. nice day. you've got numbers in the 50's. the showers start to move in by late in the day on friday. turning to snow overnight and look at the change in temperatures. you go from 50 degrees. all of a

perhaps a little for campus administration. but i also didn't want to embarrass the campus in some way. the campus knows that at the summit is a serious problem at berkeley. the campus is trying to address it as best it can maybe needs to move a little faster. >> professor gave that ire out thought he says he is gaining support with professors from other schools like stanford, for instance, where they're also seeing folks sleeping in their offices. uc berkeley sent us this statement in response saying the university remains committed to fostering an environment conducive to robust free speech and in which all members of its community feel that they may engage in campus life without fear of harassment, including harassment on the basis of religion, ethnic and or national identity. a famous falcon, a top uc berkeley's camp in bell tower has laid 3 new aches. her name is annie
