cop, floyd mitchell is expected to be formally introduced at a news conference. this coming wednesday. thanks for joining us here in companies at 5. i'm noelle bellow and i'm grant lotus. scott for theresa now has more from local leaders and folks where he worked in texas about the tough job. the chief is stepping into. unfortunately. >> they would not be any a honeymoon period. carl chan is a longtime oakland chinatown community leader. tell you for the 10 years or so. we have about 10 chief and i was almost 70. i would say almost every single one of them and in support of chip and which is very important. >> he says the fact the city has been without a chief for more than a year. chief floyd mitchell will have to get straight to the business at hand. just this past weekend. 27 year-old courtney merck was killed at a gas station in east oakland. her death marks 18 murders so far. recent oakland crime statistics also show robberies are up. 34 1%

word yet on who the top candidates are or if joseph will actually be in the running for the position. >> employee at oakland laundromat is speaking publicly tonight after she was violently attacked. the suspects were cited and released. this whole thing was caught on camera. the attack shows 2 women harassing 65 year-old ruthie wild. for nearly 8 minutes. this happened march 16th at woody's laundromat near lake merritt. ruthie says that to him and dragged her outside, punched her before going back inside and punching her again, grabbing her by the collar. tells kron 4 c thought it was going to be her last moments alive. >> my mind like all this is they're going to me become ball. i don't will become law. >> so you could do that to a really person. no one is safe and >> ruthie there says she

believes the citation that the suspect scott is just a slap on the wrist. the owners of the laundromat say business has been tough ever since covid and therefore they cannot afford to hire a security company. >> tonight, we're hearing from the loved ones of the family killed while waiting at a bus stop in san francisco's west portal neighborhood. the mother father one year old and 2 month-old children were hit by an suv while waiting to go to the san francisco zoo. their statement reads in part, quote, diego and we're warm and loving parents who had a deep love for their beautiful children and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with their 2 little boys. they go on to say they were also what one would call real life enhancers, the kind of people everyone loved to be around. happy, funny, kind and always eager to make the best of what life had to offer them. the outpouring of love and grief from all over the world, which is greatly moved. us is a

testament to this. the family says the organs of the youngest child were donated and will help save the lives of other children. authorities say the driver of the suv, 78 year-old mary fong lau is not facing any charges at this time. >> 2 teachers in the south bay are under arrest in connection to incidents involving female st dents at schools where they taught giovanni left already teaches at ace empower academy. police say last december they responded to a call of a man annoying or molesting a girl. investigators identified la torre is the suspect. they say he exchanged inappropriate messages with the girl who was a student at the school. we've reached out to the school for comment, have not yet heard back. and in a separate incident, a los gatos man was arrested and accused of assaulting a minor between 2002 2003, the suspect has been identified. here is sean thomas. he was working as a

track and field coach at los gatos high school when he was arrested last week. he was a teacher at lee high school at the time of the alleged assault. >> we here j p to want to let survivors know that it is okay to come forward to detectives. we're here to hear you. we are here too. make sure that the suspect is held accountable and put behind bars so that predators don't go after children. >> in a statement, a crowd for the campbell union high school district says they are cooperating with the investigation and they say the safety of their students is of paramount importance. >> valley police are looking for the person or people responsible for spray painting block swastikas on ukrainian flags. police say the first one was found on private property off molino avenue saturday afternoon. victims telling police it happened sometime friday overnight friday. officers say another ukrainian flag was spray painted near the same street

within that same time period. police are investigating the incidents as hate crime and are asking residents to check their surveillance video to see if they can find who's responsible. >> told prices to drive across the iconic golden gate bridge will be increasing this summer, the golden gate bridge highway and transportation district board of directors approved a new toll increased that will go into effect july 1st, most drivers will see an increase of $0.50 from the current rate of 9.75. starting in july, the toll jumped to 10. 25 fast track drivers currently pay 8.75. across the bridge again. $0.50 more. they'll pay 9.25. on the toll increases go into effect. there will be a $0.50 increase every july for the next 5 years until 2028, which officials say will raise about 139 million dollars. >> taking a live look outside from our mount tam cam across

francisco. now and 55 in half moon bay. but yeah, we've seen plenty of clouds rolling across our skies. of course, showers ending over the weekend now kind of a dry spot. but we've got some more rain in the forecast. in fact, a chance of rain as we head toward the middle of this week and then another storm, maybe late this next week in the next weekend, too. so still a very active weather pattern outside, even though we're catching little break in the stormy weather right now. you see some of those clouds up above doppler radar, staying dry right now? that's way it's going to stay for most of the night tonight. i think so. if you're stepping outside, should be dry. do plan on grabbing a jacket. temperatures cool off. generally in the 50's outside the mostly cloudy skies as we head throughout the night tonight, storm clouds likely make a return on wednesday. lauren, thank you. >> 2 big lottery drawings happening in the next 2 days. tonight's powerball drawing is up to 800 million dollars. tomorrow's mega millions jackpot is at 1.1 billion dollars. a lot of money at stake here. kron four's rob

nesbitt joining us live from la fat with the latest on the lotto fever in the bay area. rob, did you get yourself a ticket? >> i actually didn t. noelle, so don't see me and a few weeks, you know what happened? but a lottery ticket. we're $700,000 was sold at this. 76 gas station back in january. but that's just a fraction of what's up for grabs with the current powerball and mega millions winnings. >> the neon signs art lying with 2 lottery jackpots totaling nearly 2 billion dollars. the first time the mega millions and powerball jackpot have grown so large. at the same time have to buy tickets. i asked folks around the bay area what they would do with their winnings. for some it was about real estate pay for all of my friends and families. >> home so they didn't have any payments left so they could just be done with their house, pay mortgages, no mortgages for others like pam russell, the money would be used to see the world.

>> more than 400 employees at seton medical center in daly city are out on strike today. it includes vocational nurses, therapists, housekeepers and medical technicians. employees say they decided to go on strike because of recent changes to their employee health care benefits it's left. many of them struggling

to find hospitals and doctors who will take their insurance. >> i work in a hospital, but i cannot even take care of my family. my daughter who had a physician since she was a baby, has had to change her position, a physician that she doesn't even who doesn't even know it's still a free health plan. >> with, you know, a pretty broad physician network, $0 deductible, no deductible and the majority of copays are 10 to $15. >> the union representing the employees and the owners of seton medical center have been negotiating a new contract since last year. it's not clear when the 2 sides will resume negotiations. workers also plan on striking tomorrow. the hospital says they're bringing in temporary workers in order to keep the hospital operating. meantime, the county of santa clara is bracing for a nurses strike next week as kron four's. dan kerman tells us more than 3,000 registered nurses who work for the county's health system will walk off the job next tuesday over a contract dispute.

>> more than 3700 registered nurses who work here at santa clara valley medical center, as well as o'connor hospital and saint louise regional hospital are set to walk off the job for 3 days beginning next tuesday because they can't reach an agreement with the county and a new contract. we have 3 hospitals week. we serve 12 click clinics. we serve custody, health. >> and so we we run again icu nurses were trump a level one trauma center. we do pediatrics, med surge, all the icus. we do and where the backbone of this system we're committed to making sure that those critical services continue to our patients and to our community. jennifer tong, with the county health care system says steps are being taken to fill those positions in the critical care areas during the duration of the strike. we have a dedicated group of leaders and many staff who will be working. >> around the clock through the weekend to make sure that we can adequately orient and train the supplemental staff who will be joining us during

the strike to continue those critical services to the community contract negotiations have been ongoing since the fall with the focus on salary and benefits and the nurse to patient ratio. >> nurses say the county is not negotiating in good faith. the county says it faces a massive budget deficit but remains committed to provide a fair and sustainable contract. again, the strike is scheduled to run from april second to april 4th. at this point, the 2 sides are not scheduled to meet at the bargaining table. >> before that, april, second date in san jose. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> and tomorrow, registered nurses at john muir in concord will ticket to highlight safety concerns, including staffing challenges in workplace violence. issues. the 2018 report from the u.s. bureau of labor statistics said health care workers were 6 times more likely to be attacked in the workplace compared to other private sector workers. health care leaders took those issues to capitol hill today. they say

these cases frequently go and report it and they're calling on congress to pass 2 bills to address the issue. one would make violence against health care workers, a federal offense. the other would create a federal standard for hospital safety and offer protection for employees to report incidents. >> we no longer just a place of healing because now we have to worry about our own safety. we've been hit, slapped, kicked, punched. i'm having our own equipment thrown at us. >> thanks in tomorrow's pickett in concord, ahrens are also demanding john myhre provide adequate relief staffing so nurses can safely take meal and rest breaks without fearing that their patients are being left an monitored. >> 2 people were shot and killed inside a home in san francisco's portola neighborhood last night police responded to the area of dwight street and san bruno avenue just before 9 o'clock when they arrived, officers found 2 adults dead at the scene. the victims have been

identified yet. no arrests have been made. staying in the city. another driver slammed into a bus stop this time next to golden gate park, injuring a person standing nearby. the crash comes one week after a family of 4 was hit and killed by a car while waiting for a bus to the zoo. this crash happened saturday afternoon just before 5 on fulton street and park. presidio officials say a man was taken to the hospital with injuries to his head. witnesses saying the driver hit a metal pole in front of the bus stop which likely prevented more people from being hurt. police say the driver was cited for multiple violations. the community is now demanding the city do more to protect pedestrians. >> absolutely unacceptable. there's not enough that we can be doing in terms of policy in design change i were in charge would be putting in bollards tonight. unfortunately, that's not happening. we need better traffic enforcement in our streets need to be designed to keep kids to keep people safe.

the next couple of days here and into the weekend as well. a high pressure off the coastline. kind of get a sense of this ridge. but over the top of that, the start to see a lot of clouds out there developing the pacific. that's going to park of the next system that's going to be dropping in to bring yet another round of rain into the bay area. can believe it? but as we get to wednesday, looks like a chance of showers on the way for tonight. so far, so good. we'll see a weak system kind of slide on by that kind of kicks to the sun fayed's way. high pressure going to take over here, speaking in for at least a day. so tomorrow should be a dry day, although it will be a partly cloudy day around the bay area. then you see those clouds kind of living off the coastline. those will be pushing him as we get into wednesday. tomorrow, temperatures in the 50's, even some mild numbers into the 60's well into the 60's in the santa clara valley. looking good there. but overall, things are going to change again. we're in an unsettled pattern right now that can leave the door open for these storms to roll in. so tomorrow looks like a decent day. we're going to wake up to some partly cloudy skies early on. lots of sunshine in the
