>> and after of when the bridge was hit by a cargo ship causing it to crashed into the water reporter mariel carbone is in baltimore tonight with the search for the missing workers. >> he's now considered a recovery effort. crews have not been able to locate or recover any remains at this point even locate any bodies in the rubble of the bridge here. and with it now dark out, they say it's unsafe to have divers in the water any longer. >> the advice we have container hanging off of the bridge, a catastrophic collapse of baltimore's key bridge of this is an unspeakable tragedy. officials say a cargo ship registered to singapore in named ali issued a mayday call leaving the baltimore port this morning. moments later, it struck the bridge, destroying it in seconds. and may mean part of the channel on your side, groups from various agencies responding to the scene. the ntsb will leave that investigation. the agency will

investigate recorders on board the ship plus its owner and operator survival factors and more. but right now, right now, it's about people. >> it's about a family. is officials confirmed contractors for broader builders were working on the bridge at the time of the collapse. >> 6 of them now presumed dead. we do not believe that we're going to find in these individual still alive as of 7.30, tuesday night, the coast guard called off the search and rescue operations. last thing we want to do is put divers in the water. >> what changing currents, low temperatures, very poor visibility, visibility and so much. metal and other unknown objects in the water. governor westmore says the state of maryland is committed to working with local and federal the past. >> to normalcy will not be easy. it will not be quick. it will not be inexpensive. >> and officials say they do plan to put those divers back in the water at 06:00am tomorrow and they hope they

can do and more details. search of the river reporting from baltimore on mariel carbone. >> the collapse in baltimore has many wondering how bay area bridges would fare if there was a crash like the one in baltimore kron. 4 grant lodes joins us here in studio with what caltrans is saying could happen grant. that's right. ken vicki, some of the bay area bridges, sea cargo ships passing under other sea oil tankers, for instance, in caltrans says the possibility of a crash was always a consideration when these bridges were first designed and then built and then upgrade. every one of them has a protection device around it. that's a fender system that either is completely different than the bridge foundations themselves. >> or it's designed to absorb the energy. caltrans says it's more likely the xbridge fenders around the bridges to protect them would damage ship as opposed to the other way around. however, caltrans it's

you cannot plan for everything. vicki and ken. and that is why caltrans says. and case of a crash, you know, they have protocols in place which are actually implemented last night as well where you shut down the toll plaza and then you have officers basically stopped traffic on either side of the bridge as soon as possible. the call, you know, came in that the ship was having trouble and in danger of hitting the bridge within 90 troopers had stopped traffic on both sides and one of the officers was then radio that he was going to tell the construction workers, these people working on the potholes on the span. but by that, he couldn't even get there. it was in the water i mean, and you had cars before that. the cops were able to stop people on the side. they were driving across that. you can see that in the surveillance video, these headlights. so you can see this big 18 wheeler, the last 20 right and some of them

fairly. yeah. i mean there it was a matter of seconds. certainly tragedy. you figure the 6 people are dead, but could have been way, way worse. thank you. grant us right. >> more than a week since a crash killed a young family of 4 in san francisco's west portal neighborhood. san francisco's municipal transportation agency has released its first detailed report on the site of the tragedy. the report confirms that the driver involved in the crash was speeding and going the wrong way. but it did not indicate any design flaws at the intersection saying that the agency has installed high visibility, sidewalks and signs instructing drivers to watch for trains and refrain from passing. meanwhile, one supervisor wants to speed up traffic safety projects in parts of the city. consider to be dangerous supervisor. connie chan says she still waiting to get an approval on a project that she proposed more than 4 years ago. kron 4

sarah stinson joins us live in the city. >> with the supervisors latest push try to get that ball rolling. sarah. >> supervisor connie chan says well, traffic related deaths continue to go up. red tape is stopping a lot of these traffic improvement projects from getting chan wants immediate action to prevent more people from dying. >> given what we spent the last 2 weeks is that we can no longer wait. supervisor connie chan wants the city to speed up vision, 0 projects to make san francisco streets safer for all vision. 0 is a policy aimed at eliminating traffic deaths all together. yet this year we've seen an uptick in deadly crashes, including the one that killed a family of 4 at a bus stop in west portal. and over the weekend, a man was injured by a car at a bus stop in the district. chan represents the supervisor is now asking the city attorney's

office to draft legislation that would authorize an emergency declaration to prioritize projects that haven't been completed. you. we have these plan project. we know that design. it's and its plan and it's been planned. well. >> let's move with that. let's go like let's finish chan says she's frustrated. several projects in her district aren't done yet. >> including a project on fulton street to build yellow bulbs, extending sidewalks for pedestrians, project planning for this began in 2019. here we are, you last 5 years, pedestrian fatalities has significantly it is time for us to move and declared the emergency. chan also wants the city to speed up installation up to speed cameras on fulton street and install lights for people crossing in the busy fulton corridor. so pedestrians like audrey lou can safely cross around 20 cars possibly before they really.

>> uc berkeley police are asking for your help in identifying 5 people that were involved in this protest last month. here are some of the pictures of those protesters that police are looking for. they're accused of disrupting a campus event hosted by a jewish student organization. police say members of the crowd forced their way into the school's theater and hurt guest and police officers and caused property damage. the incidents are classified as hate crimes. the big step forward for north bay deputy who was hurt in the line of

duty. >> after spending 22 days in the hospital, deputy nick deleon was released this morning. the sonoma county sheriff's department says he was critically injured while confronting an armed suspect back on march. 4th, that incident with this ended with the suspect dead d'elia will be continuing his recovery at a rehab facility. another bargaining session is set for tomorrow between nurses and john muir medical in concord. the 2 sides have been negotiating for almost 2 years now over a new contract, registered nurses from the picket lines today. they say they have safety concerns, staffing challenges, workplace violence, issues and not enough relief staffing. so nurses can take breaks. >> john muir has a lot of their own. it. boards and meetings in place already. but none of those really provide a seat for a nurse to be president and to have any and as the feet on ground, the people facing patients every

day, we really feel that it's most important that the nurses are the ones that have the most important. >> john muir health responded to the picket. was this statement saying, quote, michael health systems, john muir health has facestaffing challenges which have significantly improved as we continue to hire more nurses specific to the subjects of health and safety and workplace violence prevention. john, your health is proposing to add expansive new language to the contract. >> big story we're following for you tonight. the supreme court is hearing arguments about whether to limit access to a widely popular abortion drug. this is the first abortion case to be brought to the court since it overturned roe versus wade 2 years ago. our kron four's noelle bellow joins us now live in studio with more on the arguments heard today as well as reaction from a local doctor. well. >> vicki today, anti-abortion groups rallied in dc challenging the fda's rules for access to mifepristone. the drug is widely used in

more than 60% of us abortions and was approved for use more than 2 decades ago. the justices seemed skeptical of efforts to limit access to the medication today, a majority of them questioned whether the anti abortion doctors challenging the loosening of regulations have sufficient legal grounds. >> we don't think they come within 100 miles of the kind of circumstances court has previously identified in this case seems like a prime example of turning what could be a small lawsuit into a nationwide legislative assembly on an fda rule or any other federal government action. >> a doctor at as have general explained the reality of the situation. if the justices decide to limit the use of that abortion pill. >> but if they take this medication away, then we won't be able to we want to have abortion pills. we won't be able to do medication abortion and we'll have to go back to what people have really been

doing for generations, right? people pregnancies. >> since since the days of the bible. >> a decision on this case is expected this summer can vicki. all right. well, thank you. golden gate park is used to filling up with smoke on for 20 april 20th, but this year, popular hippie hill gathering has been canceled. organizers say a lack of sponsorship >> pretty tough economic year are to blame. kron four's rob % nesbitt talked with people who work in the cannabis industry on how this cancellation could impact their business and the possibility of bringing the event back next year. tens of thousands of people have gathered for several years for for 20 at hippie hill. >> the city started permitting the event in 2017 to control crowd size. but that's become too costly over time. this was the message posted online tuesday. letting people know that for 20 at hippie hill is canceled this year. a big disappointment for the cannabis industry. spark owns 5 dispensaries in the bay area and vp of marketing tesco.

the debris. there's no estimated time reopening, but because of the active slide in an upcoming rain. our first lawrence karnow joins us now with when we can expect the next set of showers. yeah, we're going to see that next. round of rain begin as early as tomorrow. but there's a stronger storm. >> on the rise that may be the last strong storm of the season headed our way a little bit later on in the week. out the door right now. >> we've got a few high clouds drifting up above around the bay area. otherwise it's kind of a quiet night outside looking out toward the golden gate bridge. looking good out there right now as we head toward skies going to fill with clouds as we head toward tomorrow morning, a chance of a few scattered showers early on. temperatures out right now. you've got some 40's and 50's so cool off but not to be cold night. that's going to see that cloud cover really on the winds yet even kind of kicking up a bit. we've had gust near 20 plus miles per hour along the coastline today. and more of that on the way, except those winter could become more suddenly as we head through the night tonight. overall, doppler

radar showing a quiet night across california, but not far we've got this next storm. that's now developing in the gulf of alaska. so real strong on the first one coming through, but it will bring some showers. the bay area's more rain as we head in toward tomorrow night time this out for a little bit. you'll see the storm system. yeah. finally getting that ridge to moving kick eastward, the jet stream will sag to the south. we're looking at some scattered showers during the day and then the real rain comes through. i think as we head toward tomorrow night, be prepared for that thing's going to be a little bit wet outside. keep that umbrella with you and it will be a little bit cooler to its time now. the computer models, as we take you through the night tonight and tomorrow morning, you're waking up the commute. yeah. maybe a chance of a few scattered showers. maybe some drizzle along the coastline. you see those southerly winds kicking in them. that will be the case throughout the middle of the day. lunchtime, few widely scattered showers popping up outside. but then we start to get the more activities we headed toward the evening hours. heavy rainfall begins to move through as we head toward tomorrow night. bigger storm to come. we'll talk more about that in a second. all right, the mega millions fever is finally over tonight. these are the winning numbers.

>> police in san francisco are now offering a quarter of a million dollars for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for a deadly shooting at a playground. investigators say it happened back in april of 2022. at the alice chalmers playground. that's behind longfellow elementary school in the crocker, amazon neighborhood. they say the victims were playing basketball when at least 2 suspects in a car opened fire. 20 year-old karen carlson and 22 year-old brandon alexander cheese were killed. 2 other victims were shot but did survive. police say that the gunman's getaway car was a silver honda accord. >> police are looking for a man who stabbed another man in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. they say it happened about 12, 30 early this morning on gary street. just a few blocks from van ness. police say the 2 men got into a fight before the victim was stabbed several times the

victim was taken to hospital. his condition has not been released. police have not released a description of the attacker staying in the tenderloin city leaders are banning any new smoke shops from opening in that neighborhood today. the board of supervisors unanimously voted for that ban. the legislation does not affect businesses are already open. leaders say this was decided after requests from tenderloin. residents also unanimously voted by supervisors today a push to bring a full service grocery store to that neighborhood. >> next step we take a look back at the history of incidents involving cargo ships and bay area bridges following the tragic crash in baltimore that brought the whole br

>> that's something a lot of people are asking now. now at 10, 30, we continue our coverage on the baltimore bridge collapse. 6 construction workers are missing and they are presumed dead by officials after a cargo ship crashed into the bridge, sending the bridge and people into the water. the baltimore in baltimore like baltimore. the bay is another big shipping hub with large cargo ships passing in or at least 2 major bridges before going to port yet. so. >> you have to ask yourself, could something like this happened here? kron four's justine waltman reports on past incidents of bay area bridges. >> this has happened several times before over the past couple of decades. but one big ships have crashed into the bay bridge or sandra fell bridge. the damage has not been as catastrophic. the

francis scott key bridge was a steel truss bridge. a design that's fairly uncommon here in the bay area. >> its closest analog, these southbound section of the benicia martinez bridge. a 1.7 mile span built in 1962, key bridge complete in 1977, and a little shorter. at 1.6 miles, the big difference, the height, the key bridge had about 50 feet more clearance to allow large container ships to pass underneath what it did not have enough of protection around the supports all 6 major toll bridges in the bay area have vendor systems built to deflect incoming ships. in 2007, the container ship, costco, bruce, and lost its way. and the bay fog hitting a tower on the bay bridge. but the impacted more damage to the surrounding coastline than it did to the bridge spilling over 50,000 gallons of fuel into the bay killing thousands

of sea birds and 2013 and empty tanker struck a bay bridge tower damaging 30 to 40 feet of the surrounding fender. but it didn't even affect traffic on the bridge above a bigger concern in the bay area. earthquakes, the magnitude 6.9 loma prieta earthquake damage to the bay bridge eastern span in 1989. that part of the bridge like the key bridge in maryland was a truss bridge. it's since been replaced with a new span that incorporates a suspension style bridge similar to the golden gate suspension. bridges can withstand earthquakes better than any other type of bridge and retrofitting set to begin this year will make the golden gate even stronger with seismic upgrades built to withstand an 8.0 earthquake. the strongest the san andreas fault could produce retrofitting on the golden gate bridge should be done by 2029 in the newsroom. i'm justine waldman. kron. 4

news. >> when the baltimore bridge collapse kron $0.4 this breaking news viewers and be sure to download the free kron. 4 mobile app to get push alerts sent to your mobile device. fire crews responding to a house fire in san leandro, 5 adults and 3 children are now without a home following the early monday morning. blaze. fire officials say that fire started in the garage quickly engulfed that home. sadly, the family's cat did not survive, but no other injuries were reported. the american red cross is providing assistance to that family. >> in san jose, there's a pilot to tech program that's launched to try to detect homeless encampments. the city is inviting tech companies to mount cameras on a city vehicle that will collect video of streets and public spaces. city officials say they're using that video to train artificial intelligence

to identify homeless encampments and people living in cars. advocates worry this will be used to push homeless people out. but city officials say the surveillance will be used to better provide essential services for those folks. >> california is backing a proposal to make financial education a graduation requirement in state public schools. the legislature has tried to introduce bills to mandate a personal finance high school course in the past. but those proposals failed. all now supporters are hoping to bring the idea to life with voters. it can save a life report with students who are in tough neighborhoods. >> or schools that, you know, i've had many challenges and we see students performing well academically but being engaged in life and what their future is going to be. we think that personal finances, important ingredient to success for all of our students. >> gop senator and former minority leader scott wilk released a statement saying that he supports the measure

and believes it will give students the tools they need to succeed. >> students who are struggling to fill out financial aid is now have an extra month to beat the deadline. lawmakers fast track the bill after a federal glitch blocked thousands of undergraduates from completing the federal application. those affected were primarily students who are citizens, but their parents were not. now the deadline has been moved for account grants and other state aid programs and has moved from april. second, 2 may 2nd. >> the saturday is a bay fc is the first home opener ever to celebrate leith through rather a kickoff party at civic center today. mayor london breed says she's thrilled to welcome a bay fc to san francisco in the bay area. today players signed autographs for fans. young players also got the chance to work on their footwork. bay fc will be playing of the houston dash at paypal park in san jose on saturday. sugar bowl

open rolling up in the high country. but as you head in toward tomorrow, yeah, here we go. some spring snowstorm is going to be rolling. in fact, a couple of them right on into the weekend. that's going bring some very low snow levels to you're starting out around 5,000 feet or so. but lowering to about 3500 feet as we head into thursday, we could be talking one to 2 feet of snow from this next storm alone. and then even see more than that with than one coming through on friday and into the weekend. travel, as you bet. i think there's going to be some issues from time to time, especially on friday. there's possibly some whiteout conditions may be some brief blizzard conditions on friday as well as we're going to see some very strong gusty winds over the mountain tops. so we've got winter storm warnings up along the western of the sierra nevada. winter weather advisories all the way from tahoe down in the mammoth and in 70's. so you've got to be prepared if you head to the high country is going to be on and off here in the days ahead. so there you go. some showers beginning on wednesday, turning to snow overnight and more snow expected on thursday and a strong storm with heavy snow and some gusty winds on wednesday out the door right

now. it's kind of quiet out there. a couple high clouds up above that storm. those slowly churning its way toward the coastline that will bring with another round of rain in the bay area. long range forecast. i think we see some showers out ahead of the main front throughout the day. then the main front comes in tomorrow evening in tomorrow night to bring more sustained rain, turning to showers on thursday. scattered showers, more snow in the mountains and then we get ready for this one. that's going to be a big coming through. looks like on friday, not only with the rain but some gusty winds, maybe start talking about some gust of 40 45 miles an hour along the coastline. as that front comes through, that's gonna lead to some more showers and probably some thunderstorms on saturday and unfortunately may be some lingering showers on easter sunday, too. if you've got some plans after that looks like things are going to change, skies will start to clear out. but we're going to have some pretty impressive totals here as we're going to see a lot northern california had above average for the entire season. we're getting close in some spots. some spots already head but for storm system, not a ton of rain out of it all over the mountain tops, maybe another inch or so in toward the santa cruz mountains. then you throw on that next storm. that's
