hopes of catching the alleged criminals canceled egg hunts and postponed events. a rainy conditions storing a bit of a monkey wrench into some weekend plans when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. good evening. thank you for joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. i'm ken wayne and i'm vicki liviakis. the family of a 19 year-old shot and killed by sunnyvale police. >> speaking out today, the department releasing this body cam video of the saturday shooting saying that they were forced to kill the man who was armed with a knife kron four's. dan thorn joins us now live in sunnyvale tonight with reactions from the mans family. dan. >> yeah, vicki police say they tried to get 19 year-old emmanuel perez but sarah to drop the knife when they went to that mobile home park. but they say he refused. and the unfortunate followed. emanuel's family says that he was a nice young man and that

he was struggling with his mental health following the covid-19 pandemic. >> off in a series of videos, sunnyvale police detail last saturday's deadly police shooting of 19 year-old emmanuel perez. but sarah descending on the and public safety takes any loss of life. very seriously. officers say they were called to the plaza del rey mobile home park for a report of a man walking around naked, armed with a knife. edited video released friday shows police approaching the sarah and repeatedly telling him to drop the knife. >> viscera instead turned to an officer and began walking toward them while holding the the officer then opened >> the discharge his duty weapon twice. >> striking the suspect. the police chief also revealed sarah had called 9-1-1 on

himself and was on the line when officers approached him, the dispatcher can be heard. also trying to get him to put the knife down. you drop. and the sarah's family tells kron 4. his death is a tremendous loss. they also say emanuel was truly a caring individual who was still healing from those pandemic impacts and his opportunity to return to normalcy with his loving and supportive family is now gone. sonny bill's police chief would not comment on the actions his officers this is an active >> our department and district attorney's office were still you gavin all the facts and i think would be premature for me give an opinion one way or the and to the investigation has concluded. >> well, the officers that were involved in that shooting have been placed on leave while an investigation is underway and the series family is planning a vigil for him

next week in sunnyvale. dan thorn kron. 4 news, right? the highway patrol investigating a shooting now in oakland. they say. >> it actually happened this morning in the on-ramp eastbound 5.80, for macarthur boulevard and the off-ramp to seminary avenue. chp says that the shooting was reported shortly after 9. nobody hurt. the agency is looking for the suspect who was driving a white older honda civic. >> the rain may have spoiled some early easter plans across the bay area from canceled a postpone softball games because of soggy fields and out on the roads. a downpour made driving challenging. >> well, you're asking yourself, could the rain ruin your outdoor easter plans? no one better to answer that. then, lawrence. and this, you know, really important weekend. you know, some people have sunrise service the role in the easter eggs, the stray dogs. >> yeah, and we've got some showers out there right now. so here we go. we've got the rain that's been rolling through the bay area today.

clouds begin to part a little bit, but we're far from done with the rain in tomorrow. and you can see those showers off and on with a chance of thunderstorms. look at the rotation of these clouds kind of rolling in along the coastline. the radar picking up a more rain moving in along the peninsula right now and more to come as that area of low pressure kind of just sits off the coastline. but these bands are coming onshore. the possibility some thunderstorms and brief downpours as they come on through. that will be the case through tomorrow as well as that area of low pressure. continuing to spin off the coastline. you see a couple lightning strikes there, too. is this a very unstable air mass that is moving on through? so yeah, plans for the holidays going to be a little rough, especially tomorrow as that low-pressure going to be slow to sag to the south as it does. it's going take some of that moisture for the south with it. so the focus tomorrow may clear out a little bit of the north bay, but the central bay in the south bay. so a better chance more scattered showers wrapping around that low as we head through the day. so that being said, let's take a look at the forecast and get you through the weekend here that low spinning around bringing a chance of showers as we head toward tomorrow morning. another

chance we look toward the afternoon as we get the easter sunday. i think the morning looks pretty good if you're headed out for is to sunrise by the afternoon couple of pop-up showers return to the bay area. san francisco firefighters are investigating a fire at a church in the mission district. >> crews say the fire broke out just before 3 this morning at saint john. the evangelist this couple church, nobody was hurt, but the fire did cause some damage, according to the church's social media page. all easter services will be held as scheduled. >> a shootout between police and a man in san jose ends with an arrest. that shootout happening this morning at a home along lee avenue near ross avenue. police say a relative of john gal drudge reported that the man was drunk. taken some pills and was having suicidal behavior while holding a gun. officers say they tried to negotiate with him, but the man fired at the officers. 2 officers fired back. police say nobody, though, was hurt. person that

is not mentally stable. armed with a firearm in a public location is a very, very dangerous situation. and we're fortunate that in this case nobody was hurt. >> san jose police shared this picture of the handgun that they say the man was holding. >> police say ridge had 6 handguns registered to him. >> gatos business owner has decided to deal with burglars in different kind of way by posting them on her store's social media page. kron four's noelle bellow here in the studio with more on this unique approach. noel. >> canned the vintage shop owner says she first put up what she called a wall of shame on her door last summer featuring pictures of the alleged shoplifters. but it didn't stop them from stealing. so she's now taking things a step further. the store is called raising 9. they've been selling second-hand and locally made vintage clothing since november of 2022. but in that short period of time, the owner sammy says they've

experienced a lot of shoplifting, says 75% of shoplifters are people who live in the gatos saratoga area. and while she sees high schoolers committing the crime, she believes 98% of her shoplifters are grown adults. so on top of the wall of shame, she's now taken to social media posting videos and images of the alleged thieves in the act. >> this is the only thing that i can do again for myself. at this point. i don't really care what anyone says outside. if they're against it because putin's paying the bills, you know. >> sammy says she's received both good and pretty bad responses to our decision to put these shoplifters on blast. but in some instances, the shoplifters have actually come back to return. the items she says she has, of course, called police and even tried prosecuting in the past. but that avenue hasn't gone very far by posting on social media. she usually can get an

id on the alleged thief within a matter of hours. 10, a interesting know. well, well, 54 people have been arrested from the cities. >> tenderloin district all happening in just one day pictures show us some of what police say where the 600 grams of narcotics seized during those arrest on wednesday. investigators say out of the 54 arrests they made, 34 were wanted they say that the search for people with illegal substances will continue around un plaza. another targeted areas. 2 people have been detained in connection to a shooting that killed a person near san francisco's union square shooting happened last night around 9.30. >> in the how they pile up as a portion of the bart station off of market street. police say they're trying to figure out what led up to that shooting. a concord man is now facing up to 14 years in prison for tossing pipe bombs at police. police say daniel garcia seen here after his

arrest last october led police on a high-speed chase from the city to the east bay and pipe bombs at police. garcia was convicted on several counts. he's scheduled to be sentenced next month. >> taking a live right now at sfo, a united flight that took off from the airport heading to paris. it was forced to divert to denver united telling us the flight had an issue with one of its engines. the plane did not declare an emergency landing. it did land safely. the plane was a boeing triple 7. the faa announced plans last week to increase oversight. and in a statement to kron 4, the agency says due to recent safety events, the faa is increasing oversight of united airlines to ensure that it is complying with safety regulations, identifying hazards and mitigating risk and effectively managing safety. >> health experts say there are now 97 cases of measles reported this year in 17 states, including california

measles is so contagious. bay area health authorities are urging residents to get vaccinated if they haven't been already and watch for symptoms. if they've recently traveled. >> 90% of the cases that the cdc has identified nationally are are coming in are imported from travelers from from other countries. but then because it is so easily transmitted, if there are people who are not vaccinated, kids or adults, that it can travel through a quite months. those people that have not yet been vaccinated. >> typically a vaccine is given to children who are between 12 and 15 months old with a second dose coming between the ages of 4, 6, those 2 doses are expected to give lifelong immunity with no booster needed. >> cases of whooping cough are exploding right now in marin county and out of the 113 cases recorded. 65 of them are linked to temple. pius high

>> once after locals panic about pirates in oakland, 3 people were arrested on thursday in connection to thefts on the city's estuary. investigators say earlier this month, a business on the embarcadero was burglarized. officers say that they recognize the burglary suspects from surveillance video as people living on boats in the estuary officers searched their 2 boats and recovered the stolen items. police say that the suspects are connected to multiple thefts all around the estuary. protesters gathered in san francisco's embarcadero following the arrival of a navy supply ship. protesters say the ship is going to 8 israel in its war with gaza. >> u.s. officials would not confirm an exact destination for that ship. only saying it's going to the middle east. our kron four's rob nesbitt talked with protesters today. tried to stop the ship from

leaving. >> the ceasefire protests have happened all over the bay area the last 6 months on friday, piers, 30 32 in san francisco where the side of the most recent calls for an end to the war in gaza causing traffic to be rerouted along the embarcadero. there's been a different, a diverse array of different tactics. reviews. >> and showing up to block stuff from happening time. sometimes it's necessary. >> even if the cause inconvenience, the navy ship docked at the pier. the usns harvey milk is the reason for the signs and the ship named after the first openly man to be elected to public%office will have its first mission to the middle east. according to the u.s. navy, ship is literally called harvey ship, which is ridiculous. remote doesn't and that spot for rights and was killed. >> as an elected official time. so i don't know why they would appropriates name like that. while the navy did not give a specific location will seem haws from the arab resource organizing center says it will be going to the

man hit and killed by a garbage truck in san jose last month is now suing the company that owns and manages that truck. the crash happened at the intersection of >> elm street and mckinstry street near san jose airport. police say the man was crossing the street in an unmarked crosswalk when the truck owned by green waste recovery made a turn and hit him. police say the driver of the truck stayed at the scene. the lawsuit alleges that the truck did not stop at a stop sign, but instead rolled through it and after hitting the man from behind, ran over his body to jose police say they are still investigating that crash. >> and a reminder to slow down on the roads during wet weather. crews say that they rescued a driver out of this car after it went off the road in sunnyvale this afternoon, firefighters had to cut out the car's roof to rescue the driver who made it out with non-life-threatening injuries. >> in half moon bay, the rain started out light and then picked up in the afternoon, but not everyone was disappointed about this wet

and windy friday. >> i mean, we have to work but there's rain or whatever it is. you know, work out. >> but do rain what we need a lot of event, one of the like that. >> well, looks like the heavy rain may be coming to an end, but there will still be some showers this weekend. kron 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow here to. tell us what's going on. yeah. if you have a good attitude in half moon bay, we need the showers that for sure. in fact, because of the rain that we had today above normal. now for the season across most a bay area. good part of california. that includes the snowpack, too. so that's some great news. we've got some more showers to deal with. and some of those could be some heavy downpours as they come through specially get a thunderstorm cumulonimbus clouds rolling in overhead right now, just some scattered showers around the bay area. see some water still on the ground there. look in the 70 oh bridge right now. people traveling around, but we've had some decent amounts of rain. how about san anselmo

just about an inch and a 3rd of rain in the last 24 over an inch of rain. pacifica, almost an inch of rain. san francisco when above the average just over half an inch of rain there. oakland still a little bit in the deficit, but still a 3rd of an inch of rain and san jose just over a 3rd of an inch of rain to some really nice soaker around much of the bay area. some of the mountain tops one to 2 inches of rain. plus that area of low pressure spinning around a beautiful looking storm. we may not see another one like this until next october. so, yeah, it was a pretty impressive rolling on through that steady rain really picking up the middle of the day and then the main front going through an hour on the backside of this. but as long as we're seeing this will off the coastline that some instability on the back side, the unstable air, more showers and maybe more thunderstorms popping up outside. you scattered showers begin to move in again. that along the peninsula, some rain beginning to fall over on a half moon bay right down the highway. one, some heavier amounts of rain showing up there as well. that's going to push inside the bay we're seeing some of that too in near san jose just to the east over the mountain

tops more that on the way. and of course, further south, they had a whole lot of rain and that front just really headed that way right now. and so if you're traveling lausanne, just the holiday, be very, very careful. all right. now marine warnings are up and that's because we've seen some a rotation and some of the storms off thcoastline, the possibility that they could be dealing with some water spouts here overnight flood advisory also in a flood in the southland right through sunday at 6 o'clock in the evening. so be careful headed that way. we are looking at the storm system rolling on through as it moves on by tonight. more scattered showers into saturday. so not a washout, but watch out specially in the central bay in the south bay. best chance of a few showers rolling on through on the afternoon. guys, back to you. thank you, lauren. some major stores are going to be either closed operating on limited hours. this easter sunday, costco and sam's club. >> they'll be closed and only some target locations will be open on sunday. whole foods stores. they'll be open on sunday but will have limited hours. all trader joe's locations will operate as normal. tonight, a former 40

>> new at 10 governor newsom says he plans to install hundreds of cameras in the east bay to try to improve safety as our kron four's. philippe reports tonight the cameras are going to be placed in oakland and on freeways. >> oakland city councilmember dan kalb has been advocating for more surveillance cameras in neighborhoods. bugged by crying and supports the governor's new plan type of pushing for freeway on-ramps and along our business commercial, our commercial business corridors. >> those are some of the places that we need those cameras, but there are other places as well over the coming months. governor gavin newsom says 480 high-tech surveillance cameras will be

installed in the east bay to combat crime and violence. 290 are slated for surface streets in the city of oakland and another 190 along state freeways in the area. >> the first cameras to hit the streets are expected to be online within the next 30 days. kalb says they will not only help solve crimes, they may prevent them to if they feel that they can get caught because of the surveillance camera, then that would deter crime some of the crimes. absolutely. the governor's office says the california highway patrol has a contract with flock safety to install the network of cameras and they are supposed to improve identifying vehicles and license plates associated with crimes. in a statement, oakland mayor sheng thao says, quote, this new camera network will help us stop crime and hold more suspects accountable. but not everyone supports the governor's plan. the anti police terror project says considering the city and state's large budget deficits, the money used for the cameras

could be better served. tackling homelessness and helping people land living wage jobs, co-founder cat brooks also says in the statement, quote, the cameras are most likely to be deployed in low-income neighborhoods were largely black and brown. people will be impacted. oakland is supposed to be a sanctuary city yet. we don't know who the data collected will be shared with. we should not be invading anybody's privacy. it's very important that all the cameras are installed >> on the public right away, not into people's living rooms. i'm i'm quite sure that is the case. the governor's office says the camera footage will not be disclosed to 3rd parties beyond state law enforcement. philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. new at 10. the oakland airport is considering changing its name saying a new name could help boost travel since many one of his of the bay area >> may not be aware of the oakland airport and how close it is to san francisco. currently its official name is

the metropolitan oakland international airport. officials want to change it to san francisco bay, oakland international airport. they say the airport ak and the visual brand will not change the port of oakland commissioners are set to consider that name at a board meeting come mid april. >> california's minimum wage for fast-food workers will jump to $20 an hour starting on monday. the wage increase will affect hundreds of thousands of employees who work at some of the biggest fast-food companies. but not everybody is happy with this wage several franchises has started cutting jobs to offset those rising wages. others like mcdonald's and chipotle are already signaling that prices are going to rise in response to the increased labor costs. the $20 per hour law will make california's minimum wage the highest in the country. there apparently is a theory out there that if you want to get the best flight prices online, you should use in cognito mode on your browser. >> the thinking is travel

sites and airlines are tracking your every move and they know when you really need to book a ticket. so you go incognito and then they can't track you and you can get a cheaper flight. but it turns out this is more than likely a myth tech company gizmodo looked into it found a study from berkeley, yale and the university of chicago. they analyzed pricing trends for one big airline and they say they found overall bookings do matter to price. but your personal interest or your browsing frequency does not. while 7% of the time the in cognito gave a cheaper flight. 5% of the time. it was actually more expensive. for the first time in the history of greece voters even here living in california will now be able to vote by mail in upcoming eu elections. this june. >> the country's representative is here in the bay area to get the word out. >> this issue is very dear to our hearts. >> why? because as you know, greece has a intense just has many expats around the globe

and their permits request has been make it easier for us to vote. minister nicky a dose says that for a country like greece, it's a question of democracy and >> how to make elections more accessible to voters. the deadline to sign up, but that country's platform is april 29th. the clock is ticking. the filing deadline for your income tax return is less than 3 weeks away. but the irs says it can help for many taxpayers. the irs is new tool direct file. i just fit the bill. it is a new government tools that's meant to make filing your taxes simple and cheap. federal officials are encouraging people to see if they qualify for what they call an easy use service. >> it's a tool that allows americans with simple tax returns. this in 12 states to be able to file their taxes to the irs directly. >> california is one of those 12 states where you can use this tool. there are some

limitations, though, that come with it. the program is only meant for people who have a w 2 other forms of income like stock or rental income cannot be reported with direct file. you have until april 15th to file your taxes. >> the next powerball jackpot drawing is tomorrow. the prize is currently worth an estimated 935 million dollars cash value. that's about 450 million dollars. the growing jackpot isn't just good news for people buying lottery tickets. the california lottery says it's raised almost 63 million dollars for public schools. tonight in the sierra while there is a serious safety concern for drivers, there's also some fun to be had out there in the snow chain controls are now up along interstate heading toward donner summit. we caught up with a few families are looking forward to the spring weekend in the snow. >> it goes sliding and find well, in this note how build a

snowman staying out, get fall goodness snowman. it thanks a pair with my family. we're just here for it to go sledding. it took a while to build a snowman that having fun so far. i think it's heading into the weekend enjoy you know, enjoy the snow. pick out their obese, a fight. >> i leave early, if you can and have fun. >> good easter. the snow crews have been working through the day to clear the roads as that storm moves through for chief meteorologist lawrence karnow standing by with the details. that's for sure. heavy snow now making its way across the high country that same front that rolled through the bay area today bringing some heavy rain from times in the afternoon. that is now moving up in the mountains and they're getting all that cold air moving in. that's turning into the snow. so you can see there on the very latest on the doppler radar. all that snow along 50 on 80 here. chaining up on both. as you're going to see really slow going up there tonight. and some

pretty fierce condition traveling in the high country right now. not just there, but all the way down. you head toward a bear valley and down the mammoth lakes. see moving in there. also you some of the valley. so heavy snow across the sierra nevada traveling anywhere in those locations. you've got to be extra careful. make sure you're carrying those change throughout the weekend. likely see more and more snow. the storm system is not done with us by any means. and it just continues to spin off the coastline. that means it's going to drag more moisture up across the sierra nevada with a little more of a southerly track as we head in toward the next couple of days. so all the way down los angeles, yet the high country there going also be dealing with some snow. but this strong spring storm going to be heavy snow tonight and some gusty winds to go along with that. the high country snow level between about 3500, about 4500 feet. so that pretty low one to 2 feet of snow expected across 5,000 feet and across the higher peaks, you can get upwards of 3 plus feet of snow in those locations. so we're already seeing some travel delays tonight. changing trolls already in effect. gusty winds will continue on and off throughout the weekend. so winter storm

warnings are up along the western of the sierra nevada to all the way down to bear valley in the mammoth lakes. a snow advisory continuing elsewhere and this year, too. so that's going continue throughout the weekend. so if you're headed that way, make sure you're prepared. keep snow gear right with you as well as we'll see that snow. a lingering through sunday, too. by monday, the sunshine returns. temperatures going to change quite a bit, too, as we get ready for some spring to work its way back in the high country. but there's a lot of snow to come in. the forecast model showing that to you can see some of the upper there, upwards of 2 feet of snow. plus, it's great news overall, the look at where we sit now as far as the total for snow for the season, 118% of normal. the southern sierra finally over 102%. now in the central. and i think maybe by the end of the weekend, we could be above average, even in the southern sierra nevada. so that's good news rainfall in the bay area. yeah. kind of scattered showers out there right now. a little bit slick out toward the golden gate bridge overnight tonight. we'll see more of that rain, the possibility that isolated thunderstorm rolling on through to you see the showers out there now and some more on
