today's another top story. the weather might it's going to be a hot start. and yeah, this afternoon, john. good morning. yeah. hot inland is a. >> where we're headed low 80's on the way for a lot of us later on today. whereas towards the coastline, this is what you've got right here. a little bit of that fog is going to keep our coastal areas. i'm the opposite little cooler. this is happening bay right here. no sunshine out that direction right now. the rest of us, though, nothing but that sunshine and even after this morning fog will see that stuff along bayshore burning right off. current temperatures are right now in the 40's to 50's alameda sitting at 53 oakland and berkeley in the upper 40's right now. definitely. you're kind of typical morning temperatures later on today. quite the spread of numbers, low 80's inland 60's by the coast. i'll give you the full breakdown. still to come, michael. >> thanks on. it's always nice to have good weather. good morning, everyone. if you're just waking up happy wednesday, unfortunately, we are seeing some delays this

morning on the roads and we actually have to stick alerts to talk about. so the first is pover a little bit more inland it's no the dublin pleasanton area. it's on westbound 5.80. it involves multiple cars. it's near hop your road and they are out there right now trying to get that clear. but keep in mind, it's going to cause some delays all the way over towards livermore. the second sigalert is a traffic collision happening over in westbound 80. it's in valais how it's near georgia street. elaine is affected. that also involves multiple cars. so keep that in mind as you're heading out the door this morning. but taking a look at some quick drive times for those of you who are heading towards the maze right now. it's a 23 minute commute from crockett to the maze, walnut creek to 5, 80 12 minute commute. castro valley to the maze. 13 minute commute, stanley and or to the mays. an 11 minute commute. lastly taking a live look at that bay bridge. you can see those metering lights are on. and right now it's going to take you 15 minutes to get from the maze into the city. brandon james, we'll send it back to you. all right, michael, thank you for that. >> the stanford's women's

basketball head coach tara vanderveer has announced her retirement. yeah, she's the nc. double a's. all-time winningest basketball coach or accolades run a mile long and kron four's will tran is live out of stanford. with the heartbreaking news for fans will. >> yes, staffers they program will continue. it just won't continue with tara vanderveer. she's been here since 1985. and next year when they move to the acc, she will not be moving with them. she will hold a news conference at 1 o'clock this afternoon to go into details on why she is calling it a career say if you watch me at 6 o'clock, let me down you with more numbers and numbers. well, in this case, they say everything about are much less. you know, her players know the impact that she made on their lives. but let's talk about the numbers. 28 sweet, 16 appearances. 21

elite, 8 appearances, 14 final fours. she's won. for games. that means if you want to break it down every time she took to the court, she won 4 out of 5 games. 1000, 216 games. that is the most when for any coach in ncaa basketball history, men or women's, she actually passed coach k from duke back in january and kept on winning but ultimately lost in the death. the tournament to nc state her career spans 45 years. get this, james and reyna. she started winning in 1978 at the rightful age of 25 years old when she was the coach at idaho spent 2 seasons there. and then she went to ohio state, kept on winning, came to stanford in 1985. won 3 national championships. starting in 1990, 1992. and

then in 1995, she took a break from stanford because she coached the olympic team all the way to gold. there was so successful. >> that the nba said move, you know what? why don't we start a league? we call it the w nba. so she is credited for that as well. she came back to stanford and then won in 2021. her 3rd championship. i mean, you talk about spanning generations. she says that she has plenty to do. she's aware that a lot of coaches who spent a lifetime coaching that after the coach, they are just lost. she says i have plenty of things to do. and we do know that she's not leaving stanford altogether because she will remain with the athletic department in an advisory role. again, she will have a news conference in about 6 hours from now. and we will find out in detail why she is calling it a career. we will get reaction from stanford students as the morning moves on. i mean, when you go from the sports pages to the front pages, especially

at around 8 o'clock last night, that's how big of an impact he made on an entire country. and especially on the heels of caitlin clark and rising women's sports. well, guess what? she is part of that tide. back to wow. i feel i feel for whoever is going to take that job next because you've got to read full shoes thank you. will. >> all right. well, let's head to the south bay. san jose is moving forward. tougher restrictions. >> all the rv's can now be park near school was unanimous vote with the city council for sara stinson. walked us through it. >> jose city leaders say the ban is one of policies designed to protect children. the city plans to first try the restrictions at 3 of its schools before expanding its city-wide. but homeless advocates say this pushes the unhoused out nowhere to go. san jose city council approved an rv van tuesday. it will first be piloted at 3 schools.

independence high school shirakawa elementary school and challenger at mayor matt mahan says the city needed to pass tougher restrictions because he says students don't feel safe at school went henson, rv encampment czar nearby. >> sometimes being harassed on their way on and off campus. we're having break-ins on campus even found needles on their picnic tables back in 2021, the city voted to restrict encampments within 150 feet of schools. >> but that's become more of an informal guidance. council members say the new initiative will give the city authority to put up no parking signs. and tow our views within the school zone. homeless advocates have been opposing this measure since january and they continue to do so. you see a dog on the side of the road. >> do you not going over and big 0 dot for him? we're treating our people list and dogs. you remitted allies. the the unhoused people because they don't have a home. >> maybe they shouldn't be

near schools. okay. but you know, there's no place for them to go. mayor mahan agrees that while they work to protect schools, they also need to provide more support to those being pushed out of the school zones. seemed to have safe manage places where that safe sleeping safe parking. >> interim shelter, permanent housing. it's a place for someone to go. >> when we >> councilmember david cohen expressed frustration saying the approved various rv, safe parking site in his district would help provide a place for people to go. but it continues to be delayed, have been very vocal about. >> need to expedite the cited various it will be able to get rv's off the streets and give them and offer them places. san jose city council will have a second reading on this next month. once it gets the final approval, the city says it will be months before people any of the enforcement as the department of transportation needs to do is safety assessment. i'm sara stinson reporting in the newsroom. kron 4 news.

>> well, over the last year, california spent nearly 24 billion dollars on various efforts to fix problems with homelessness. but a new state audit found that california hasn't been tracking whether those efforts have been working. furthermore, the audit took a closer look at the cities of san jose and san diego and found both cities are doing a poor job of tracking are evaluating the effectiveness of their homelessness programs. san jose mayor matt mahan says he isn't surprised by the finding. in fact, he says improving accountability was one of the reasons he ran for mayor. >> we need more transparency, more accountability. better tracking. absolutely. but we should be tackling this city by city county by county. we should have a top down statewide framework for how we're going to measure the efficacy of the dollars were using. >> well, the state legislature is likely to pass some specific rules and regulations requiring better tracking at all levels. >> contra costa county coroner identified the 9 year-old was killed. a rollover crash this weekend and conquer as dana

hernandez. tough year for morgan chp says the girl's mother, 13 year-old sister 2.17, year-old cousins. there are also in the car in a crash on 6.80 sunday morning. all of them are still recovering in the hospital. investigators the driver took off from the scene after the crash >> in the north bay, police have arrested a high school teacher accused of sexually abusing a student. brad rau is a pe teacher in american canyon high school. he's currently being held on $100,000 bond now as he faces 3 felony counts. school district put him on administrative leave. >> 2 dozen new docking stations in hundreds flights are coming to the east bay. it's all part of the bay wills regional bike share system 565 e-bikes. docking stations are going oakland and emeryville. that expansion marks the second phase of a 2 step plan to introduce more bikes and docking stations to san francisco and san jose. the call season the bikes. it was reduced yesterday city leaders

promise morning, yeah, it's very nice out there this morning, especially ahead of what's going to be such a hot day for inland areas. nice, refreshing chance to get out there before the heat up. there's a little bit of fog at the coastline this morning. that's actually going to contribute to a cooler day for the coast. >> well, our inland areas are warming up sounds like a summer pattern, doesn't it? but it doesn't last forever today. and tomorrow may be the warmest days of the year so far for many inland areas. as this high pressure ridge is in place. but that low to our north does not waste any time and pushes in starting on friday. really cooling us down on into saturday of this weekend. and that's also when we'll see our best opportunity of rainfall lingering into early sunday. timing it out we are going to be looking at these dry skies over the next couple of days. friday gets here with that cool down that cloud up and a lot of fog near the coast friday afternoon may see a few showers, although most of those will be reserved for saturday itself. after that sunday, we start with a few showers before those showers push out. and then we

look at clearing drying skies for the remainder of the forecast. how much rain do we have in store for us this weekend? a lot of preliminary models are showing anywhere between a half an inch to even 3 quarters of an inch. some pretty decent rainfall for april, especially this deep into spring temperatures. as i mentioned at the coast are going to stay cool today. maybe not your ideal beach day with that fog out there. well, elsewhere in the bay area, just find the 70's to low 80's for daytime highs for a lot of us. this is going to feel unfamiliar. we haven't been this warm in a while. so a good piece of advice is just keep some extra water with you, especially if you're going to be out and about this afternoon, acclimate, a little bit to these warmer temperatures. as i mentioned, we just haven't experienced in of it. tomorrow is going to be just as warm as today, if not a little bit warmer. we begin our cool down starting friday and by saturday, homely in the 50's with rainfall. it's like riding back a couple of months will only see those cool temps for a couple days, though. and

then we'll be on the warmer trend next week. michael. thanks, warm weather is the great way to start off wednesday. good morning, everyone. happy wednesday. if you're just waking up or heading up out the door. >> you may want to start moving a little bit sooner. we do have some single alerts that we're dealing with this morning. this is over in the dublin pleasanton area. it's westbound 5.80. it involves multiple cars and they're starting to clean it up. it's near road. the left lane is affected right now. that read has turned into orange. so it's starting to move a little bit better than it was about 15, 20 minutes ago. the second is over in area. that's also starting to clear up. it's a traffic collision on westbound 80. it's just west of georgia street that lane has been affected for at least 2 hours now. so you may want to take highway 29 as an alternative. but taking a look at some drive times right now, antioch to concord. a 43 minute commute. that's not normal congestion that we see every single morning and taking a live look at the bay bridge right now. you can see that commute is just about 18 minutes to get from the maze into the city. those metering

lights are on. so keep that in mind. just like every morning and taking a look at some drive times for those of you who are more inland livermore to dublin. 22 minutes and again, you're going to see that delay because of that accident that they're cleaning up right now and keep in mind, it involves multiple cars so they may be out there for at least the next hour or so dublin to fremont. 22 minutes, san leandro to milpitas. 31 minutes milpitas to sunnyvale. a seven-minute commute taking a live look at the san mateo bridge. 18 minute commute and taking a look over in the south bay. overall, you can see things do look good. no major delays there. taking a look at 101 c with the drive times for you is from san jose over to menlo park. a 38 minute commute ran. james, we'll send it back to you i'm michael, thank you for that for your money this morning 3 in 4 american drivers for road trips over fly. >> new inflation numbers were just released. a king is live. the nasdaq with those stories and more in the red. good morning, good morning. everett

was slight here. for the 3rd month in a row. inflation that came in hotter than expected. so this is the consumer price index, cpi. we call it common things that we buy. >> was up this basket of goods by 3 and a half percent compared to march of last year. here's some of the things that went up in price last month. energy electricity up by 5%. car insurance up. 22% in march. also, housing and shelter was up by 5%. clothing also costing more. we are seeing the down about 400 points in the dow based on these inflation numbers, will small business optimism has fallen to an 11 year low. the national federation of independent businesses says small businesses are feeling especially positive about their future is labor and other costs way on their bottom line about a quarter of business owners in the survey said inflation is their single most important operating problem and car payments going up as well. some of them touching 1000 bucks a month in february, more than 17% of new cars were financed with the monthly payment of more than

park police officer stopped a crime from occurring. what he witnessed. individuals trying to still apart car. the oakland hills, the suspects. they fled the scene in a car when they saw the police officer. the officer later spotted the suspect's car in another area. the oakland hills when he approached the car, the suspects they off little foot. oakland police then responded to the call. help capture 7 suspects. police officers found multiple guns, including even a replica of a firearm ski mask in the car. police determined the suspect's car was stolen. over 3,000 pge customers. they were left without any power. fairfield. police say a drunk driver crashed into an electricity pole k street. this is east of clay street. happened sunday morning that about 12. 24. now the poll was tipped over onto other electrical lines. this caused a small fire right on the fence line along travis boulevard, pga new, they were able to restore power. the north texas street area still has some issues throughout sunday.

>> with 2, 7, year-old girls are home safe once again after being reported missing a petaluma. they were last seen monday along adobe creek on the petaluma creek trail with their dog nearby. police and neighbors helped in the search. the 2 girls were eventually found actually in that same area where they were last seen. >> they just got lost and wandered. we'll have to wait and see what comes out of that story. meanwhile, coming up next on the kron, 4 morning news. a group of specialists now trying to find a whale that was spotted tangled up in nets will have more on that in nets will have more on that in a minute. up on pretty cool shot here. san francisco, some low clouds, but don't worry. not at all because those will not impact any of the weather today. nice warm one. >> a new needed to lay out those shorts yesterday. gotten ready? >> yeah, our inland areas get ready for those shorts. it's already nice and sunny for those inland spots that are going to see our warmest day of the year so far closer to the coastline keep the jackets on hand. it will stay nice and cool at the coast. this is your summertime. set up right here with the cool foggy coast and a warm, sunny inland. this is your view from sutro tower. you can see that fog. but lincoln even old. go look at the golden gate. if you look really close, you can just see the bridge right out there rising up through that fog. that is right up against the coastline. watch for a few foggy spots up near the coast and marine and sonoma counties as well as well as down aaong highway one towards half moon bay. otherwise temperatures will be on the rise really quickly today and are all the sunshine most of us will be seeing. he word in brentwood at 51 degrees. berkeley right

at 50 degrees later today. it will be a range of 60's of the coast to those low 80's for inland spots. michael. >> thanks, jon. that's wonderful. o lot of 80 degree weather will. good morning, everyone. and happy wednesday. taking a look at those roads. well, there is some small congestion but nothing too major. things are starting to clear up right now. so before you head out the door, let's get you what you need to know. taking a look right now over the dublin area. there is a singular. it's starting to get cleared up. so it's not too congested, but it's westbound 5.80. it's just east of hop your road and it involved multiple vehicles. so that is being cleared up right now as we speak. and you can see that traffic is starting to flow through that area. the second sic alert is over in the area. westbound 80. it's near georgia street. that lane has been affected for at least 2 hours now. and that is starting to get cleared up. and that red has slowly gotten smaller, 7 alternative route could be highway. 29 drive times for you before you walk out that door, you can seek rocket to the maze of 36

minute commute. walnut creek to 5, 80 14 minute commute. castro valley to the maze. 14 minute commute stanley and route to the maze. also a 14 minute commute. and before i send you guys back to rain and james will take a live look at that bay bridge. and you can see from the maze over into the city. it's only about a 20 minute commute. we'll send it back to 2 at the desk. all right, michael, thanks for that update. there. 7.31 is the time in the east bay, the antioch police department now seeing some improvement when it comes to their staffing situation. officials say that's thanks to a higher incentive program. >> also kasaan trying recruit new officers to the police academy. a kron four's philippe djegal has the story. >> the antioch police department currently employs far below the number of sworn staff positions authorized by the city council. but mayor lamar hernandez stark says the outlook is promising, especially now that many of the officers once placed on leave have been cleared to return to work to do the math. everything goes right exposed to go pretty soon, we'll have 95 officers and then we'll have more coming online that are that are that are waiting

to go the academy. so that will be over 90 something officers pretty soon. the city has authorized 115 sworn positions for the police department. interim chief brian addington confirms there are 80 on active duty. 39 work patrols just one less than the mayor's goal. 6 cadets are currently in the economy. 7 more are slated to join the academy this month. and mayor hernandez thorpe says he's $30,000 signing bonus program extended by the city council last year has resulted in more than 20 new hires given where we've been in the last 2 years. we have attracted a lot of new time officers. so we get a lot the academy, the academy, 6 months. >> when they get out lead, the academy coming to field training field training can be anywhere between 4 to 6 it would be impossible to get to one 15 unless we hired our laterals. and that's not who we've been attracting. we have been attracting brand new officers who i think they're

committed to change and see an opportunity build a police department that that they can be. >> out of the community can be proud of and our leaders can be proud at times during the past 2 years. it's believed that up to half of the sworn staff members were placed on leave. >> while county and federal investigators corroborated bribery, misconduct and races, text messaging cases culminating in charges filed against several officers in january 2023, the mayor reported 98 sworn officers were on the force and inflated number, though, because dozens were on leave. philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> well, 7.33, is the time and we're getting some new details now about san jose's 13th traffic death of the year was back in january. the 2 cars collided at the intersection of mckee road and francis drive. officials say it was a toyota tacoma truck that ran a red light and struck another car. the driver of that truck died from their injuries. the driver that the truck crashed into had minor injuries. what

hayward man has been arrested now for a deadly hit and run that happened last year in september. police say christopher hannah was riding his bike when he was struck near mission boulevard and orchard avenue in hayward. they say the car that hit him was reported stolen and was later found abandoned and set on fire. no word on what led investigators to the man who now is ultimately charged with vehicular manslaughter. >> well, in the east bay, the contra costa board of supervisors. they've passed a recommendation to expand health care to immigrants. this expands eligibility to immigrants by eliminating the documentation status acquired for the county's basic health care program. supervisor john going as celebrated the vote saying, quote, stuart action to expand health care for more of a hard working immigrant families makes is a healthier and more equitable county. state lawmakers are now looking to increase penalties against corporations convicted of criminal offenses. state attorney general rob bonta says while corporations cannot be sent to prison, the crimes

they can face penalties. so the current law allows for a maximum $10,000, fine per felony bonds. new bill would allow a judge to impose a fine of up to 25 million dollars per case or even a penalty worth twice the amount of that money the victim may have lost as a result of the corporation's offense. >> if you commit horrific crimes, you will pay a just find a fair fight in holding these corporations accountable is that we're going to enhance deterrence and that's going to discourage this kind of corporate misconduct that's going to discourage people defrauding their fellow californians are exploiting people harming are invited and that is going to protect communities across our state. >> obama says more than 75% of the money from the fines would go towards a newly established fun to support victims. don't have any word on any formal opposition just yet. >> cal, fire officials are asking for your help now at finding this person. they say whoever this is suspected of

setting a fire at san jose state university back on march 31st. if you recognize who this is, you're asked to call san jose state police or cal fire. well, a ton of u.s. vehicle company. cruz is set to put its cars back on the road for the first time since october. the self-driving car company says it will add a small fleet of human-driven cars in phoenix. cruz says it will create maps and gather road information with the ultimate goal of resuming its driverless mission. the company stopped operations in october weeks after one of its self-driving cars was involved in a pedestrian accident. >> meantime, services the police and they are looking for man who they say vandalized a mosque with a skateboard last week and that person could be trying to cause more damage. the mosque is right on center street between venice and polk. police say the man was first captured on video last thursday, damaging the building's windows with a skateboard and then it was back in the area yesterday morning. but he drove off without causing any harm to the mosque. the man has

pleaded not guilty to hate crimes and assault charges in san francisco. now drama was charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon along with a hate crime enhancement. the victim was attacked on march 28th and polk and allay streets. the attacker allegedly of racial slurs leading to hate crime charges. the drama is also facing charges of possession of drug paraphernalia. his total bond was set at over $62,000 scheduled to appear in court on april. 15th for a preliminary hearing. >> its 7.37, is the time. and governor gavin newsom says that crime is down in san francisco is been almost a year since he sent and chp and the california national guard to the city now with kron four's rob nesbitt. he actually talked with the chp about what they've done so far. >> the public took notice when chp increased patrols in san francisco, according to the governor's office in the past 11 months, chp has seized more than 42 pounds of fentanyl in the tenderloin officer. andrew barclay from chp golden gate
