>> now at noon, overturned semi truck is blocking traffic on a san lorenzo. we're live there with the mask that this is causing to the commute. and a vote on whether to change the name of the oakland airport. happening in just a few hours, the possible legal action that could happen if they vote. yes. and we continue to follow breaking news on the death of oj simpson. the san francisco native passed away at the age of 76. we take a look back at his life from the football field to the courtroom. >> from the bay station, you're watching kron. and news. >> thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at noon. i'm justine waltman. we start off with some developing news. we're an overturned. semi has been blocking traffic on 8.80, in san lorenzo all morning. kron. 4 s charles clifford is live at the scene with us to tell us where things stand as we heading now into the afternoon. thanks for joining us. >> well, good afternoon. right now going on to 38, right

where it needs 8.80, and that a semi truck trailer have been removed. but you take a look behind me. they're often the caltrans. the highway patrol are still working on cleaning up the mess that was left behind by this early morning accident. >> according to the california highway patrol around one 30 thursday morning, a big rig truck pulling a trailer full of frozen foods crashed on the connecting red between westbound to 38 in 8.80, in san lorenzo. officers arriving on scene from the trailer on its side of truck, leaking fuel out onto the roadway. the highway patrol says it appears the driver may have fallen asleep. >> causes looks like the driver fell asleep on no. never hit the brakes and hit a about 55 miles an hour hit the 10 later new entered his job. the driver wasn't hurt, which is the main thing now to spain up. and the highway patrol initially closed all lanes here. but by mid-morning, 2 lanes have been reopened. but the slowdown created a backup that stretch for miles around 10, 30. the trailer was loaded

onto a flatbed truck and moved to another location before being turned upright. it's unclear at this point the driver will face any everything's under investigation. so we'll do a collision investigation and sharp and it will be cited. >> all right, back live. now the situation at the moment is that all the traffic onto 30 westbound is being forced onto 8.80, northbound. >> connector ramp to go south towards like san jose. that is going to be shut down and we're told until about one 30 this afternoon. but for now in the east bay, charles clifford kron, 4 news. charles, thank you. >> and that way to go to some developing news out of the south bay where a driver hit a pedestrian in san jose. that victim now has life-threatening injuries. police say this happened just after 5 o'clock this morning near story road and roberts avenue. the victim was taken to a hospital according to police. the crash is also impacting traffic and officers are asking people to avoid the area. we're working to get more details and we'll keep you updated as soon as we get

more information because traffic deaths continue to plague san jose. 13 people died in crashes so far this year. city leaders are blaming the city's wide roads and speeding. and we talk with the mayor about what the city is doing to try and prevent more deaths. kron four's jack molmud has the details. >> from a fatal crash on monterey road in january. to a man who spent months trying to recover but ultimately died in april after he was hit by a car off mckee wrote, we do everything right. >> we follow all the rules we wear bright clothing. and still, we have a lot of those calls. max siegel with the organization, families for safe streets says even when walking his daughters to school, it's just too close for comfort. close call can be. >> not paying attention to intersection. san jose keeps track of its car crashes on a public database so far this year we have seen twice as many fatal car crashes compared to just this time last year. so many of the through ways that run through

san jose rack up quite a few deaths from bad data set. but none may be more dangerous that monterey road, which between 2018, 2023 logged 6 teen road fatalities here. when we most awesome and get it right now that we're talking to max off the corner of monterey and tully and has been shot. >> cars driving into the bike lane. they're supposed to be separated by these posts. you work towards. designing our streets, holistically. a public data also shows san jose's years long campaign to improve its roads like installing those bike lane markers and transforming battle through ways in the summer. i grew up on this section of brandon road right here. a couple decades ago. you had 3 lanes and 3 lanes of cars going within 40 miles an hour in the city of san jose. recognize the problem here ended up reducing it to 2 lanes to 2 lanes and added in protected bike lane. one death one too many when it comes to our roadways, people should feel safe. san jose mayor matt mahan says the projects are

improving streets slowly but surely infrastructure projects are expensive the staff and actually carry them out there says he wants to hire more police officers, 4 enforcement and even the potential addition of security camera automatically issue first a warning. and then after the first 6 months a ticket, max says the city should not only focus on police staffing, but the design of the roads themselves. and so we need again to have a design, a design, our streets. >> that encourages people and forces people to >> behave better jack moment. kron. 4 news. >> the silicon valley transit agency is partnering up with the south bay cities to make safer routes for students going to school. the homestead, safe routes school project will be putting protected bike lanes, highly visible crosswalks and modifying the traffic signals. the project's pans. homestead road in cupertino, los altos. en sunnyvale, the project needs to gather 16.8 million dollars in order to move forward. but one secure that

construction could start in 2026. and be finished early. 2028. still no sighting, though, of that gray whale whose tail was tangled up in a fishing that that whale was spotted tuesday near pacifica. but it has disappeared. this is video from the marine mammal center yesterday. rescue crews set out by boat uncovered a 70 mile area between pacific on point raise, but they were unable to find the whale fog, wind and waves hampered the search. and today the weather off the coast is getting worse. so as a result, the marine mammal center says there will be no search today and likely not until next week after the weekend's storms all go through. rescuers say they're reaching out to various agencies to keep an eye out for that whale from the shore and one spotted rescue crews hope to put a satellite tracker on the whale and then down the road. reconnect with it and remove that fishing net. here's what it looks like outside right now. looking out towards the bay bridge. we have blue skies here. but as

that story was just saying with the whale kyle along the coast, it's pretty foggy. it's like up right behind i wouldn't say it's, you know, i wouldn't say it's wildly foggy because i just look at half moon bay. it's not bad. but we do have some marine layer out there. and you can certainly see it is surrounding the golden gate bridge. now, this does happen from time to time. we've got beautiful sunshine everywhere else, which is kind of happening today. >> and then the bridge is kind of socked but temperatures will show you that we are warming up already in a spot like san jose to 76 degrees. same story in livermore. concord. 75. so that tells you there's plenty of sunshine right now. the south bay and in the east bay, north bay, not doing too bad either. santa rosa now about 70 degrees, but certainly cooler. and we have had a little bit of fog, little bit of a marine layer hanging out out of half moon bay. >> a little breezy out of point raise. that's the usual. but everyone else is relatively calm. today. we're keeping an eye on this low pressure system they see to our north and our west a very well defined front here that's going to track through. >> as we get into the weekend

and that is going to change our weather dramatically temperature wise and also going bring us little rain. but we're not there yet, folks. and we've got another beautiful day on tap today. so as we spin the wheel here, we're definitely today. we're going to see our inland spots get up to about 82 degrees today. so well above average. one more day before we start to see things cool down in our weather pattern changes. here are the highs today looking at about 67 in san francisco. but as you can see, those low 80's over in the inner east bay about 80 degrees in san jose, we should get close to it up in spots like middle valley looking out for at 79 degrees today, too. i'll be back in a bit. we'll talk more about that rain and dramatic temperature drop on the way. thanks, kyle. another big story that we're following as that oj simpson has died. >> at the age of 76 born and raised in san francisco's potrero hill neighborhood. he growth in government subsidized housing projects and then after graduating from galileo, high school, he started at city college of san francisco before transferring

to usc in 1967. simpson ended his football career san francisco with the forty-niners during the 1979 season. and reporter rick chambers takes a look back now at his career and that controversial case that captivated the country. >> we the jury in the above entitled action find the defendant or jump on james simpson not guilty of the crime of murder. >> it was the trial of the century. oj simpson star football player and hollywood actor accused of savagely murdering his ex-wife, nicole brown and her friend ron goldman. an estimated 150 million people watched the verdict come in life. the trial was broadcast in classrooms at workplaces and even on the oprah winfrey show where audience members both cheered and cried as he was acquitted. emotions usually falling along racial lines. before the trial. simpson was a popular actor starring in

naked gun movies. he gained fame in college, though, winning the heisman trophy while playing football for usc. nicknamed the juice. he went on to the nfl and shattered both rushing and touchdown records. as a member of the buffalo bills. all that changed, though on june 12th of 1994 as brown and goldman's bodies were found outside her la condo. simpson was an immediate suspect. and 5 days later he was ordered to surrender to police. instead, he led them on a slow speed chase down the 5 freeway to the 405, in that now infamous white ford bronco, his friend and former nfl player ac collings behind the wheel that evening. he surrendered at his brentwood mansion. the trial began in 1995. with an all-star lineup of lawyers nicknamed the dream team one by one. they dismantled the state's evidence claiming systematic racism and sloppy police work. the defining

moment came when simpson tried on gloves that were left at the murder scene. he struggled to put them on and his lawyers use that in closing arguments to show it couldn't possibly be him. >> remember these words? if it doesn't fit? we must acquit. >> shortly after simpson was found not guilty, he went to trial again for the murders. but this time in civil court, he was found liable for brown and goldman deaths there and ordered to pay more than 30 million dollars in damages. well, simpson never served time for murder. he did go to prison in 2008 for armed robbery and kidnapping in las vegas. simpson claimed that he was simply taking back sports memorabilia. that was his however, he spent almost 10 years behind bars. 14 million people tuned in as he was granted parole in 2017 at the age of 70.

>> oj simpson has died from cancer at the age of 76. he leaves behind a legacy in the sports world. but also captivated the nation when he was accused of murdering his ex-wife, nicole brown. simpson and her friend ronald goldman. he was found not guilty in 1995. and now cal state east bay, professor of communication. nolan higdon is going to join us so we can talk a little bit about oj simpson's life and legacy and also what he's done for making sort of celebrity culture come to life. nolan, thanks for joining us here on kron 4 this afternoon. appreciate your time. thank you so much for him. what was your reaction to o j death? >> you know, there a lot of memories oj as as a you know, like i can recall being home with chickenpox for 2 weeks watching the trial as young kid. and i can remember at the time of the murder trial verdict, they brought all the students into the school library to watch the verdict to be read. and just the

amount of a motion and it's it's a big reminder of the era. >> yeah. june 17th 1994. was that car chase down this ia freeway. that white bronco. we're looking at some of the footage from it now. it really captivated the nation that think they're like 95 million people watching this on tv as it was unfolding. it was also during the nba finals at the time. so there was like split-screen coverage of what was happening. how did that event change the way communications media handles things like this, like nothing like that had ever really happened before. >> yeah, that is correct. this this was you know, a lot of folks point to the oj simpson murder trial as kind of the start of so-called is a reality television here you had cameras following are a celebrity through a trial and people tuned to to watch the whole trial and the verdict and the reactions and that signal to along the

entertainment industry that, you know, maybe we can take these people with some degree of fame and create programs around them. and so i think it was hugely influential in the way we think about from there on forward and the trial itself. you know, that's when we started to learn about the kardashians. marcia clark became famous. >> johnnie cochran, these all became household names. the coverage of actual court cases where we could be inside the room. that was the first time. anything like that. really happened before. >> absolutely. a lot of you know, were as a result of this you know, you mentioned some there, even, you know, witnesses like a tokyo and others became famous and it was a, you know, an opportunity to kind of break down that wall. lot of famous people were able to to hide a lot of their personal lives. but with this trial, obviously oj was not. and so was a big peek behind the curtain to james personal life differed greatly from the public persona he had created. >> would you agree that he's a

monumental figure in american history and american culture and how do you think he'll be remembered for us? we watched all this happened on television, but there's a whole generation of people that don't even know who he is. how do you think he'll be remembered? >> think, you know, the doj simpson story is kind you know, 3 the first act. is this a talented athlete who makes it into films and broadcast scene commercials like the hertz commercial. the second actor, these murder trials and the trial for the theft of the a memorabilia. and then the final act is he became sort of this almost kind of social media presence were oj would comment on the stories. he was a kind of leftover relic from the 1990's for a lot of people in the social media era. so he's he's a complicated figure. but i think what's what's kind of more important? the oj story is that he was always at the center of a lot of larger debate. so we're going on within the country.li mean, even his trial mixed. a

lot of questions about class years. this famous, wealthy individual in terms racism of the center of policing in this trial and gender. you know, let's not forget a lot of audiences learned for the first time about the pattern of abuse that goes from verbal to physical to murder through the oj simpson trial. so it was it was he was at the center of a lot of hugely influential that the change people's minds got a lot of important conversations going. cal state, east bay, professor of communication, nolan higdon, thank you so much for joining us this afternoon. >> appreciate your time. and we'll talk about our forecast now with a live look here at sfo. no fog from the shock. i was tracking the weather for us now and >> things are looking nice out there so far today. it's gorgeous. it's just another banner day they're going to have today. get outside for lunch, if you can, everybody. we're taking a live look from the east bay. you can see how beautiful it is a minute. take livermore is an example here. one of my east bay cities, you

can see average high in livermore about 68 degrees this time of year. but today we're looking out for 81 tomorrow will cool it down to 66. and then you see what happens on saturday. we get down to 55 degrees before we do kind of rebound. those highs back to about where we should be this time of year. another reason for all of that is a low pressure system that's going to roll through and deliver some rain. and it's also going bring some really cool air in behind it. so this chances of rain a ramp up late friday night. i do think it will be kind of the overnight hours and really things get going into saturday. and then the first part of sunday, we could have a little bit of that lingering before it clears out. but i think the 2nd half of sunday will be okay. if you need to make those plans to get out and about. so let's take a look at future cast here. there's that low pressure system rolling in. now friday, we just see clouds from this, but we stay dry throughout the day. late night friday into saturday. that's when this starts to roll. and then as i mentioned, it w ll stay unsettled until we get to sunday. and yes, you do see a little sierra snow coming with this, too. this spring systems got it all, folks. but by sunday later in the day, we'll start to see that clear out.

now, when it's all said and done, we're looking out for between about a half an inch, an inch of rain. it does look like some of our coastal areas, including a half moon bay. ca get a little bit more than that. and remember, that system is going to have tracked down the coast of those of you along the peninsula in the south bay will see it longer than others right before tracks away. another component of this is going to be the wind. now today we're going to be a little breezy this afternoon. so look out for that. but notice that on shore flow starts to change direction as we get into tomorrow in the afternoon, you start to see a southwest flow and then it turns off shore as we get into saturday and the wind picking up so breezy conditions are going to be part of this. so here we are. your extended forecast beautiful today, cloudy and cooler. tomorrow. rain rolling in for your friday night into saturday. a little chance of it on sunday. and then next week we get back to just kind of normal average california weather for this time of year. i'll be morning. now out of santa clara county, invasive species of mosquitoes has been detected along. >> machado lane in east san

implement a plan to require workers back into the office. at least 2 days a week starting june 17th. up until now, many state workers have been allowed to work remotely since the start of the covid pandemic. but in that memo, they noted that each of the state's 150 agencies started to implement their own work policies with some already requiring workers to return. and then that memo patterson there, the cabinet secretary of state's quote, unfortunately, the varied approaches have created confusion around expectations and are likely to exacerbate inconsistency is across agencies and departments. she said returning to the office 2 days a week will lead to enhance collaboration and better communication. exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis. the memo went on to say that the state will inform public employee unions about this plan and some public employee unions have already announced that they are opposed. a new bill introduced in the state legislature seeks to protect

shelter, pets from euthanasia. the bill would require shelters to notify the public up to 72 hours before a dog or cat is euthanized. it would also require shelters to post a daily list of any cat or dog scheduled for euthanasia on their website or facebook page. >> when people know that animals lives are at risk, lives could be saved. >> there's no word on formal opposition to this bill. but in years passed, similar bills failed amid concerns from opponents that it could result shelter. overcrowding. uc berkeley is responding to the pro-palestinian protest at a professor's home. >> that quickly gained attention on social media not and sideshows ramping up across the bay area and city officials are proposing ways to stop this illegal activity. plus the oakland airport name change. that vote is happening today and we're going to hear from travelers about what they from travelers about what they think of this. alice loves the scent of gain so much,

>> the oakland international airport could soon add san francisco to its name. and this afternoon, the port of oakland will vote on this controversial name change that san francisco officials say they're ready to go to court over kron four's. will tran has more now? right now it is still metropolitan oakland international airport that you didn't know that the word metropolitan. >> is actually the first word in oakland international that we know it as oakland international, but the people who run the airport, they would like to add 3 words in front of oakland, san

francisco bay. if that doesn't sound right with you, well, you're not the only one because sfo, san mateo county, as well as the city of san francisco. they don't like it, which is why the next destination could be a courtroom now. right now, travelers are going through oakland international, but according to their studies, the executives, they say one half of international travelers get confuse that they don't know. oakland is part of the bay area and they say one-third of domestic travelers don't know that oakland is part of san francisco as far as the bay area and they would like to clear up the confusion by adding san francisco bay got a chance to talk to travelers. they say that's a horrible idea. >> i think it's crazy. i mean, it's in the airport is in oakland, y lose your identity being oakland airport. i mean, you're losing losing all your franchise. worst team. i mean, oakland just seems like they can't. they're not able to

keep what they have. >> san francisco doesn't think it's a good idea as well. and it's just not an opinion. they believe it is illegal believing that san francisco international, they own the copyright. yes, nobody owns the words, san francisco, but as sofo is copyrighted and they believe that they will win in court. the bottom line is the executives here. they will make a decision today, but it looks like they've already made the decision claiming that a lot of people from oakland, they are very comfortable with the words san francisco bay in front of their hometown. in san francisco, business owners on valencia street are speaking out against the new bike lanes. the owners announcing legal action against the city today. the group outlining their concerns for the bike lane project. >> businesses have reported some substantial losses attributed directly to accessibility and visibility caused by the bike lanes. more

than 10 businesses have closed since the bike lanes started. the man connected to a deadly shooting in san francisco's mission district has now been charged with murder. police say 30 year-old alexander martinez from richmond shot another man near the intersection of mission and 20th on friday. that victim died and citizens at video shows us a heavy police presence in the area near the shooting. and martinez is wednesday. if convicted, he xt - faces life in prison without parole. also in san francisco, a former bart employee was convicted of murder for shooting a group of people while he was on the job in 2021. police say kay shawn wilson was working as a power washer at the 24 street bart station when he got into argument with a group of men, wilson, they say left the station with his work truck and parked around the block before he returned with a gun. and according to police, he fired shots at a group of people killing one person and injured another wilson then

left to go to las vegas after the shooting and he was arrested at his home when he returned to the city. he is set to be sentenced in june. police have now arrested the driver who was behind the wheel during a crash that killed a 9 year-old girl from oregon. the california high patrol says jesus i've under intense is in custody and now faces multiple charges. this crash happened on sunday morning. northbound 6.80, in concord. the chp says an suv carrying 6 people drove through the dirt median and then rolled over multiple times. the 9 year-old girl died at the scene and her mother, 13 year-old sister and 2.17, year-old cousins are still being treated in the hospital. police say that the driver had ran off following the crash but has now been caught and his bail is set at $200,000. san francisco police have arrested a man who they say vandalized a mosque during the holy month of ramadan. broken windows could be seen at the mosque in the lower not

hill area. a member there told kron 4 on april 4th, a man parked his car in for the mosque, walked over to smash the windows with a skateboard and then shouted hate speech and ran inside the mosque to drink water and then went back to his car. according to police, he returned to the mosque yesterday and officers arrived and arrested him. he's 35 year-old robert gray and the muslim community now reacting to this crime. really sad is unacceptable. i went to school at this mosque as a kid. i played almost every single payer. >> during ramadan. >> over here. >> the mosque board members say over the past month, there have been other acts of vandalism. the words on this now painted wall out front reads, quote, you will all burn in and the word don't was written at the entrance of the mosque. >> where millions of muslims around the world not only forecast, not

>> a dinner for graduating uc berkeley law students got heated on tuesday night when a pro palestinian protester stood up to read a speech about ramadan and the war in gaza. the dinner was held at the home of a berkeley professor. their names were irwin comer ski and catherine fisk about 60 students were there. all of them had registered in advance. the professor say and anti-semitic poster showing a caricature of or when the professor was circulating online and on campus ahead of the dinner. and he says he was told there would be a protest, but they went forward with the plans anyway and following the dinner, he said, quote, the dinner which was meant to celebrate graduating students was obviously disrupted and disturbed. i'm enormously sad that we have students who are so rude has to come into my home in my backyard and use the social occasion for their political agenda. so these dinners are going to continue today, but there will be security present and the foundation for individual

that believe it or not, start on the west coast and get another one as we go into this weekend, they start of the west coast and they roll across the country. and when you start to get kind of cooler and warmer air masses coming together, you start to get that severe weather. so this low pressure system that we're keeping an eye on is also going to be causing some problems in the center of the country and southern part of the country next week. but today, hey, it's pretty beautiful here in california are looking live in lake tahoe. this is up a dime in peak just a glassy beautiful lake. today we're looking out for some rain in the bay, but also some snow in the sierra. and you can say it arrives on saturday. so for us late friday into overnight is when our rain is going to roll in. but for them that snow will kind get kicking on saturday their saturday afternoon. it gets pretty involved as we get to saturday night and then you can see a little back and on sunday before kind of clears out as we get into sunday evening. so this is good news. it's spring snow that helps to sustain our snow pack a little bit longer as far as totals are concerned about 6 to 12 inches in and around tahoe, you can see a little bit more expected up at mammoth lakes even the cold air cold enough
