>> now to new details on the search for the whale tangled up in a fishing net. why officials have called off that search for now. plus, a massive fire overnight in northern california. firefighters still not trying to put out this pallet fire. but first, overturned semi truck blocking traffic 8.80, in san lorenzo for hours. all lanes just reopening live now with the latest. station.

>> he's calling for news 2. >> thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 2. i'm justine waltman. our top stories. the impacts of that overturned semi and how it could snarl traffic during the evening commute is around one 30 last night that a big rig flip between westbound to 38 80 in san lorenzo. it had been trafficking blocking traffic there ever since kron. first, charles clifford is live now for us in the area. the roadway fully now reopened. but what are the impacts of that accident still having now? >> well, good the good news here is they've clear that accident, but there are some residual delays. the connector between westbound 2.38, and southbound 8.80, is reopen, but they're still caltrans crews working in the area which is slowing things down as they clean up this mess from this accident early this morning. according to the california highway patrol around one 30 thursday morning, a big rig truck pulling a trailer full of frozen foods crashed on the

connecting red between westbound to 38 in 8.80, in san lorenzo. >> officers arriving on scene from the trailer on its side truck leaking fuel out onto the roadway. the highway patrol says it appears the driver may have fallen asleep. >> causes looks like the driver fell asleep on never hit the brakes and hit a about 55 miles an hour hit the 10 waitr new entered his job. the driver wasn't hurt, which is the main thing now to spain up. and that's the highway patrol initially closed all lanes here. but by mid-morning, 2 lanes have been reopened. but the slowdown created a backup that stretch for miles around 10, 30. the trailer was loaded onto a flatbed truck and moved to another location before being turned up right? >> it's unclear at this point the driver will face any charges, everything's under investigation. so we'll do a collision investigation into certain it will be cited. all right, back live now at last check. caltrans has said they're hoping to finish their cleanup work there at that connector between westbound to 38 in 8.80.

>> probably by about 3 o'clock this afternoon in the east bay, charles clifford kron. 4 news. >> charles, thank you. now to some developing news out of the south bay where a driver hit a pedestrian in san jose. the victim now facing life threatening injuries. police say this happened just after 5 this morning. story road andu roberts avenue, the victim did go to the hospital. and a man connected to a deadly shooting in san francisco's mission district has now been charged with murder. police say 30 year-old alexander martinez from richmond shot another man near the intersection of mission and 20th. this was friday afternoon. the victim died at the scene and martinez is now scheduled to be arraigned next wednesday. if convicted, he faces life in prison without parole. also in san francisco, a former bart employee was convicted of murder for shooting a group of people. >> while he was on the job in 2021, police say that key shawn wilson was working as a power washer at the 24 street.

bart station when he got into an argument with a group of men, wilson left the station and his work truck and parked around the block before returning with that gun and then police had a lot to say about this. this is what police had to say. they said that he fired shot of that group, killing one person and injuring another. wilson left for las vegas. they say after the shooting, a man who was arrested at his home when he returned to the city, he set to be sentenced in june. >> where millions of muslims around the world not only for not only it >> a dinner for graduating uc berkeley law students got heated on tuesday night when a pro-palestinian protesters stood up to read a speech about ramadan and the war in gaza. the dinner was being held at the home of berkeley professors or when schumer scheme and catherine fisk about 60 students were there. all of them had registered in advance. the professor's are

saying anti-semitic poster showing a character sure of one of the professors, circulating online and on campus ahead of the dinner and tumor schemes says he was told there would be a protest, but they went forward with the plans anyway. following the dinner, he said, quote, the dinner which was meant to celebrate graduating students was obviously disrupted and disturbed. i'm enormously sad. we have students who are so route has to come into my home in my backyard and use this social occasion for their political agenda. the dinner ares, these dinners are going to continue today, but there will be security present. and the foundation for individual rights and expression also released a statement that reads in part here, people peaceful protests on public campuses is protected speech but destructive protests and trespassing on private property is not the first amendment does not protect seriously disrupting events on public college campuses. last.

at someone's backyard dinner party. decorated football star oj simpson has died at the age of 76. simpson was most well known for being acquitted of charges of killing his former wife and her friend. >> born and raised in san francisco's potrero hill neighborhood. he grew up in government subsidized housing projects. he graduated from galileo, high school and then went to city college of san francisco before taking his football career to usc in 1967. simpson ended that career in san francisco with the forty-niners during the 1979 season. and that reporter rick chambers takes a look back at his career and the controversial case that captivated the country. >> we the jury in the above entitled action find the defendant or jump on james simpson not guilty of the crime of murder. >> it was the trial of the century. oj simpson star football player and hollywood actor accused of savagely murdering his ex-wife, nicole brown and her friend ron goldman. an estimated

150 million people watched the verdict come in life. the trial was broadcast in classrooms at workplaces and even on the oprah winfrey show where audience members both cheered and cried as he was acquitted. emotions usually falling along racial lines. before the trial. simpson was a popular actor starring in naked gun movies. he gained fame in college, though, winning the heisman trophy while playing football for usc. nicknamed the juice. he went on to the nfl and shattered both rushing and touchdown records. as a member of the buffalo bills. all that changed, though on june 12th of 1994 as brown and goldman's bodies were found outside her la condo. simpson was an immediate suspect. and 5 days later he was ordered to surrender to police. instead, he led them on a slow speed chase down the 5 freeway to the 405, in that now infamous

white ford bronco, his friend and former nfl player ac collings behind the wheel that evening. he surrendered at his brentwood mansion. the trial began in 1995. with an all-star lineup of lawyers nicknamed the dream team one by one. they dismantled the state's evidence claiming systematic racism and sloppy police work. the defining moment came when simpson tried on gloves that were left at the murder scene. he struggled to put them on and his lawyers use that in closing arguments to show it couldn't possibly be him. >> remember these words? if it doesn't fit? we must acquit. >> shortly after simpson was found not guilty, he went to trial again for the murders. but this time in civil court, he was found liable for brown and goldman deaths there and ordered to pay more than 30 million dollars in damages. well, simpson never served time for murder. he did go to

prison in 2008 for armed robbery and kidnapping in las vegas. simpson claimed that he was simply taking back sports memorabilia. that was his however, he spent almost 10 years behind bars. 14 million people tuned in as he was granted parole in 2017 at the age of 70. >> after wonderful >> thank oj simpson, a larger than life figure whose life and alleged crimes captivated and entire nation. >> that was rick chambers reporting during conference at noon. i spoke with cal state east bay, professor of communication, nolan higdon. he says a lot of people point to that murder trial as the start of reality television. >> here you had cameras following her, a celebrity through a trial and people tuned to to watch the whole trial and the verdict in the reactions and that signal to

embarcadero area and the bay bridge. temperatures are warming up inland as expected today. we're already seeing those low 80's right now in san jose in livermore, both sitting at 81 degrees. >> also warm and conquered 78 for you. santa rosa up in the north bay about 77 degrees. 64 here in san francisco, oakland at 70 and half moon bay. a little cooler, as i mentioned about 57 winds picking up a little bit. we're gonna have another breezy afternoon and evening as we roll through. and that's going to be a hallmark of what's to come because we've got some wind coming as well with this low pressure system that's ultimately going to track through. however, that doesn't happen until we get late friday night. so today we've got this beautiful day out here and we'll have a lovely evening as well. as you can see, we're looking out for a mostly clear skies. so we're going to have just a little slimmer of a moon, but it should be beautiful if you want to check it out tonight, temperatures will be mild. lowest number of my map and inland valleys about 44 degrees. that's not bad at all. then tomorrow we really have a pattern change, though. things are going really start to change drastically as we get into tomorrow. but today,

as you can see here, half moon bay, just beautiful with some blue skies and people out there taking advantage of the nice weather by tomorrow. we're going to cool it down to inland 60's. so that's a little bit below average. and then the rain moves in friday night to saturday. and that's when we really see these temperatures get down into very chilly territory. still be a little breezy. we're going to have some wind, some rain on our saturday and then by sunday we'll start to move through this latter half of the day. things should start to get better and we're looking a lot better on the other side of the system. i'll be back in just a little bit. we'll talk more about that in your seven-day forecast. invasive mosquito that carries deadly viruses for humans has been discovered in the south bay, santa clara county vector control says the mosquitoes were found. >> east san jose neighborhood crowd for super reports on what can be done now to eliminate these bugs. this adult female 80's. it 50 mosquito that we collected from the china lane last week. machado lane is in an east san jose neighborhood and county of santa clara vector control

district ecologist. doctor taylor kelly says this is one of 6 80's aegypti mosquitoes found during the district's regular surveillance program in traps set across the community arts for the beautiful mosquito today have these sort iridescent white scales, black and white lakes which people may be able to recognize that they're getting it. >> and then they also this beautiful liar pattern on their back. doctor kelly stresses the public, though, to not get lost in their beauty. >> make no mistake. this non native species of mosquito is aggressive bites during the day, prefers humans and can transmit several viruses that cause deadly diseases become ryan's to can going. yeah. >> and thank you know, a very victor control district manager. 9 here. says much like in contra costa county 80's aegypti was discovered in santa clara county in 2022. >> and due to a quick response and cooperation from the community, vector control

francisco officials say they're prepared to go to court over kron four's. will tran has the story. right now. it is still metropolitan oakland international airport that you didn't know that the word metropolitan. >> is actually the first word in oakland international that we know it as oakland international, but the people who run the airport, they would like to add 3 words in front of oakland, san francisco bay. if that doesn't sound right with you, well, you're not the only one because sfo, san mateo county, as well as the city of san francisco. they don't like it, which is why the next destination could be a courtroom now. right now, travelers are going through oakland international, but according to their studies, the executives, they say one half of international travelers could confuse that. they don't know. oakland is part of the bay area and they say one-third of domestic travelers don't know that oakland is part of san

francisco as far as the bay area and they would like to clear up the confusion by adding san francisco bay got a chance to talk to travelers. they say that's a horrible idea. i think it's crazy. i mean, it's in the airport is in oakland. >> why lose your identity being oakland airport. i mean, you're losing losing all your franchise. worst team. i mean, oakland just seems like they can't. they're not able to keep what they have. >> san francisco doesn't think it's a good idea as well. and it's just not an opinion. they believe it is illegal believing that san francisco international, they own the copyright. yes, nobody owns the words, san francisco, sfo is copyrighted and they believe that they will win in court. the bottom line is the executives here. they will make a decision today, but it looks like they've already made the decision claiming that a lot of people from oakland, they are very comfortable with the words san francisco bay in front of

their hometown. >> course, we'll let you know how that vote comes out as we take a live look here at san francisco international airport. be interesting to see how that story plays out. and it's going to interesting to see how the weather plays out for this weekend. pilots here getting you prepared for saturday. yeah, that's right. because we do have a big change in the weather coming. both our temperatures dropping like crazy. >> and then some rain coming in. so let's take a look at the week ahead. we're looking live there at the east to take a livermore is an example where today we're looking at for some of those low 80's. when this time of year we should be about 68 degrees for the high. you can see by tomorrow we go a little bit below average. look at route 66 and then by saturday, a high of just 50 5 degrees. now we do rebound as we roll through next week and get back to where we should be. but that is just to say this is going to be a a lot of drama in the department for the next couple of days. and it is all courtesy of this low pressure system and this cold front that's going to track in typical cold front. we get stormy weather ahead of it and then we get cool air behind

it. so you can see these rain chances ramp up. it is going to be the overnight hours the very early morning hours of saturday throughout the day on saturday. and then it looks like into the first part of sunday before it moves out. but then notice and the other side, you know, quite dry and quite just a little bit of a spring storm to roll through. let's look at future cast and talk this through, shall we? all right. here's our friday. the clouds move in. but we stay dry. it is until the late night really overnight hours, i think for this really gets going that this system moves in. now, notice there is a little sierra snow coming with this, too. so saturday remains quite showery, first part of sunday and then it pushes away and we should be looking pretty good once we get done with this. now the models are coming in a little hot this afternoon. i will tell you it is amping up some of the totals for. you can see the more southern part of our viewing area from the peninsula to points south and notice in the santa cruz mountains. i mean, it is really pumping them up. we are going to have some wind with this as well. get a little breezy this afternoon. but look what happens tomorrow afternoon. we start to see this pick up. it is an onshore

no sighting of that gray whale whose tail is tangled up in a fishing that the whale spotted tuesday near pacifica. but >> and then disappear. this is video from the marine mammal center yesterday. rescue crews south by boats. they covered a 70 mile area between pacific and point rays. they were unable to find the whale fog, wind and waves hampered the search. and today the weather off the coast is getting worse. so as a result, the marine mammal center says there will be no search today and likely not again until next week after this weekend's storms passed through. rescuers say they're reaching out to various agencies to keep an eye out for that. well, from the shore and one spotted rescue crews hope to put a satellite tracker on the whale and then down the road. reconnect with it and remove the fishing that. ac transit and the city of oakland partnering up to make international boulevard safer. and this will be along east oakland international boulevard corridor. 1.8 million dollars will go towards extending safety

enhancements from 14th to 42nd avenues and 14 to 100 and 7th avenues ac transit. the oakland department of transportation and the oakland fire department working on figuring out where to add these enhancements. construction is expected to start late spring and be done by the end of summer. still to come here during kron for to the latest from behind after that horrible fire destroyed part of the town. >> there is a sign, though, that it is starting to grow back. center's say continues to report deadly crashes. drivers are pushing city leaders to start more safety measures. and when we come back, the latest on that massive overnight fire and the damage that left behind these damage that left behind these stories an you can't leave without cuddles.

>> now to developing news out of tracy where fire crews are cleaning up after this massive fire that spread overnight at a recycling company. the business is now closed and it's very close to an elementary school at home. so there's a lot of concern about this report are clogged that stefani has the latest. >> firefighters have been able to gain an upper hand on this fire. and we're learning that residents who are asked to leave their homes while they can now return. and as we take a look right now, you can see that fire fight is well underway and as we've been learning, they've been able to knock down this fire. but you can see the amount of water that's needed to keep all of this under control so that that fire doesn't kick up again. at some point, residents were asked to leave their homes. there was a nearby school that was closed for today to function as a shelter for those evacuees and water supply ended up being a huge problem in this firefight

where there are no hydrants in the area and water had to be trucked in. and we're also learning from firefighters that, you know, this was something that just posed to be a bit of a difficult firefight because they were dealing with palace as well. that and we also have power that was out in the area. we spoke to an evacuee who explained she never had to evacuate her home before. take a listen. >> i've never had to evacuate than that. >> so as i mentioned, they have been able to knock down that fire. but as you can see, we've been here for hours on end. their journey isn't done quite yet. they've to continue to keep water on reporting from tracy covering local news that matters climate stuff. onion. >> all right. now to another sign of recovery in la hina for that banyan tree, which is still showing signs of life and regrowth a new irrigation system is being put in a network of vertical tubes that will help get aerial roots to

touch the soil more quickly. arbor say it's been uphill battle and there now also fighting off bugs. >> we're in the middle of triage, literally triage and we're trying to fix the street regardless of what history happened with the street it to us. we want to keep all living things alive in this area. this thing included, you know, we are also promoting his many of the louis possible. >> so far about 40% of the banyan has been cut down and shipped. they're collecting more parts of it for replanting in case the tree declines anymore. but there encouraged by signs of life in the truck. traffic deaths continue to plague san jose. 13 people died in car crashes so far this year. city leaders are blaming the city's wide roads and speeding. and we talked with the mayor about what the city is doing to try to prevent more deaths. kron four's jeff moment has the details. >> from a fatal crash on monterey road in january. to a

man who spent months trying to recover but ultimately died in april after he was hit by a car off mckee wrote, we do everything right. >> we follow all the rules we wear bright clothing. and still, we have a lot of those calls. max siegel with the organization, families for safe streets. >> says even when walking his daughters to school, it's just too close for comfort. close call can be. >> not paying attention to the intersection. san jose keeps track of his car crashes on a public database so far this year we have seen twice as many fatal car crashes compared to just this time last year. so many of the through ways that run through san jose rack up quite a few deaths from bad data set. but none may be more dangerous that monterey road, which between 2018, 2023 logged 6 teen road fatalities here. when we just almost saw someone get that right now that we're acts off the corner of monterey and tully and has been shot. >> cars driving into the bike lane. they're supposed to be

separated by these posts. you work towards. designing our streets, holistically. a public data also shows san jose's years long campaign to improve its roads like installing those bike lane markers and transforming final through ways in the summer. i grew up on this section of brandon road right here. a couple decades ago. you had 3 lanes and 3 lanes of cars going within 40 miles an hour in the city of san jose. recognize the problem here ended up reducing it to 2 lanes to 2 lanes and added in protected bike lane. one death one too many when it comes to our roadways, people should feel safe. san jose mayor matt mahan says the projects are improving streets slowly but surely infrastructure projects are expensive the staff and actually carry them out there says he wants to hire more police officers, 4 enforcement and even the potential addition of security camera automatically issue first a warning. and then after the first 6 months a ticket, max says the city should not only focus on police staffing.

>> but the design of the roads themselves. and so we need again to have a design, a design, our streets. >> that encourages people and forces people to behave better. now there's some funding set aside to improve. king wrote that's an east side, san jose and yet another statistically dangerous road in the city. >> now regarding the security cameras, the mayor says that if city council approves those cameras, they would start with around 30 of them and placed them around school zones in the newsroom. i'm jack moment. kron 4 news. >> the silicon valley transit agency is partnering up with south bay cities to make a safer route for students to go to school. the homestead, safe routes school project will be putting in protected bike lanes, highly visible crosswalks and modifying traffic signals. the project's pans, homestead road in cupertino, los altos and sunnyvale. the project needs to gather 16.8 million dollars in order to move forward. but one secured construction could start in 2026 and then be done by early 2028. new now to the

been very destructive is on its way out to. meanwhile, the west coast, we are relatively calm, but you can see where our low pressure system here that's going bring some rain and some sierra snow is going to be headed our way as we get into the weekend right now. beautiful up a diamond peak. you can see that glassy lake. it is just gorgeous. however, over the next couple of days, we will see some of that snow move in. they're also expecting quite a bit of winds to come with this system. and that is why there's now a lake wind advisory starting at 11:00am on friday. lake tahoe going through midnight. so that will be kicking up tomorrow and then the snow kind of move in after that. no watches and warnings it up for the snow except for down a mammoth ad. just put up that winter weather advisory expect. we'll start to see that for this year as well as we roll into tomorrow. but here it is. as we get to saturday, you can see waere that snow starts kicking as we've got the rain rolling through the bay area. so it is going to be another spring storm, everybody and i do like this for our snow pack because it just kind of insulate some of that snow that's already there that we want to try and hang on to as we go through our spring time before we get that melting going up. it cold
