8:00 am
on select new volvo models. contact your volvo retailer to learn more. >> from the bay area's local news station. we begin now with breaking news. >> am. we are now hour and a half into the blockade. the protest that is blocking traffic in oakland on northbound 8.80, at 5th avenue and 4 miles beyond. yeah, the backup extends. we're going to talk with john more about that. but here you have images from the scene. >> demonstrators sitting on the pavement along with these giant oil drums. >> and with a protester in between each oil drum sitting on the ground, they each have
8:01 am
their hands extended into the oil drums next to them, which i'm sure they think a clever way of preventing police from being able to detach them or even figuring out how to detach them until they can open up those oil barrels. this is a difference. this is an evolution from a demonstration we saw at the bay bridge back during the apec summit last fall when they had those black metal or plastic sleeves that the joined hands beneath and police were able to cut through those and separate the demonstrators. but this seems to be an escalation of that methodology where they're making it more difficult for police to detach the protesters from themselves. and then in addition to oil drums that you see there, the protesters sitting there are protesters. >> kind of scattered throughout the initial back update you see here because they arrived in their cars and there are cars. we've already seen several cars that they arrived in that have been deserted. so you got to figure can those cars be moved to cars have keys in them to they need to ge% tow trucks out. they need to get some kind of
8:02 am
vehicle, a big vehicle to move the pro to physical protesters. then as james said, it's complicated by how to move the protesters and untangle them from those oil drums. this is part of the backup that stretches around 60th avenue. but go back from here. and you've got 9 th avenue backed up and be on. so the that there are thousands of cars that go for miles that are stuck, not moving at all. and they've been that way for an hour and a half since 06:30am. and it's probably going to be that way for hours more because again, we haven't see that activity begin as far as what it's going to take to break up and move the protesters, the cars and the barrels. so even once that begins, there's going to be some time needed for that to happen. so you could plant. we look at what happened at the bay bridge and that was just as complicated if not more complicated or less. was still was 4 hours so we're going on an hour and a half. that means they've already, you know,
8:03 am
mister appointment ms the flight they are taking haven't gotten to the doctors or you're a stuck in the back up wanting to go to the bathroom. you're getting hungry. you may have kids with you and god forbid, we're hoping that there are no medical emergencies and that backup that have nowhere to go. now we do have kron four's michael thomas. he was reporting on for us on the story of kidnap he's moving. he's heading to the scene now. he'll start reporting on the back up and hopefully get some. >> new pictures of these are some images that we first got a hold of about maybe about an hour ago. but we know that on social media, we are starting to see some new images that show police actually working to take apart some of these barrel. so they are making progress. all how far along they are, how much longer it's going to take to remove all the other barrels and the demonstrators are attached is still unclear. but at least the work has begun to start at least deconstructing some of these barrels so they can figure out how these protesters are attached to them and get them attached and eventually arrested. now we want to bring john shrable in
8:04 am
on our team coverage here talking about the backup as you can see here >> northbound 8.80. this isn't 66 avenue and the alternate routes, john, that we've been talking about, are those starting to back up and what should people do from here? and that's the issue because, yeah, we've been mentioning especially 5.80, being that good route. but take a look at that high of 80 drive time. >> it's really starting to rise now. it was a 30 minutes to get 30 minutes. now. it's getting closer to an hour to get from castro valley to the maze on 5.80. that will take you through oakland, of course, 80 is still not yet all your option. it's the hour and a half to get from san leandro to the maze. that backup is now well past the oakland airport. and so even getting off to san leandro trying to get up to 5.80, is is going to take you in increasingly long time surface streets like international boulevard as well as san leandro avenue are also really going to be very slow as my
8:05 am
suggestion is a case try to head south. if you are in areas like the east end of oakland, even alameda, maybe san leandro head south down 8.80, that direction. it's still a little bit backed up. but if you can connect with the san mateo bridge of the dumbarton bridge make your way in that direction, that's just going ease a whole lot of that burden that now both 5, 80 80 are both care. so you're saying like take the long way around? yeah. and a car. >> but what about like if you're trying to take a bus? we've already talked about and i think we have a graphic talking about how >> buses are affected, cause. we can't they can't pick people up ac transit camp and people up if they can't. >> get them anywhere. so why would they pick them up at their usual stop? i would say, yeah, try to get on bart and then get to that transbay bus terminal or just and over. and >> bar is going to definitely help out a lot that transbay bus. if you're in spots like alameda may be your most helpful option, of course, are other like the mateo bridge in
8:06 am
the dumbarton bridge are okay. and even once you get to the bay bridge, it's fine to. i mean, take a look at this. the bay bridges. right and it's because everyone stuck on a 85, maybe no idea if they're so you you can get around it if you really had to. but it's going to take a long time yet. the people who are stuck in it can't go anywhere. >> and and then you've got a situation where it's going to be backed up for probably hours to come because this disentangling those is going to take some time. so really, they've already said that their mission is to disrupt life as normal to make a stand about that. what's going on between israel and hamas. and so their mission is accomplished. we're just hoping that nobody gets hurt. you know, over this in the meantime, because of medical emergency, unintended consequences. not often that demonstrators may not always be aware yeah. that happened with an event like this. but
8:07 am
>> i saw we had that information about transit lines on the screen moment ago. let me just reiterate and all read to you what ac transit has put out on social media because >> if you are heading out, expecting to pick, you know, to go to your normal bus, stop to catch one of these lines. all of these lines are being affected right now by that demonstration. so ac transit says don't go to your normal bus stop. if this is one of your lives, what you need to do is go to 7th street and mandela parkway. that's the west oakland bart station. that is where the buses are going to pick you up and take you on your way. so hopefully there aren't too many people sitting at bus stops right now, wondering, where's the bus? it's been a long time on late for work now speaking of by the way, if you're late for work and you're on a bus or you're in this traffic or you've got a friend or relative who stuck in this traffic. we would love you. >> to send any pictures or video that you have 2 breaking news, a crawford out com and you can be part of our coverage because right now, you know, we just see a long-distance shot of the gridlock that we've been going
8:08 am
over social media and getting. that's how we learned about kind of the intricacies of how the people who are sitting in the highway are connected with these barrels and how the police are slowly kind of disassembling and separating them from those barrels and that process is taking some time. so even though we keep showing you the same pictures and video that we have, we do know they're making a little progress. put boy is is it going to take a while? and speaking of that, i was just if you need to get into this area like not through johns talking about how you get through it, but you need to get in it like. >> if you have to get to the hospital or a business or school, you can't. i mean the because didn't you just this area is gridlocked, you know? and so are the streets around it. so it's just become a nightmare for people actually need to be in that area. businesses in that area. and for folks that have a flight out oakland international airport. earlier i was telling you, instead of going on 8.80, because that's completely
8:09 am
jammed. right to go on 5.80, get off at the oakland zoo there. 98, right. and take that in has a look at property. but again, 5.80, really now starting to back up almost. >> back to castro valley as well. so i mean, that's still your best bet to get to the airport. just know that you're going to have to leave extra early to try and get through the slowdown on 5.80, again. don't do 8.80 because you're not getting anywhere on a date. at least 5. it is moving. and that's what this live right now. so it's just slow. so give yourself that extra time to get the airport. if you've got flight later on, if you've got a flight the next hour or >> i'm not going to say no hope anymore, but it's it's going to be closer. me. i go to plan b and i just go okay. is there a flight tomorrow? i can take where it lists its, you know, a pressing issue. can i do it tomorrow? even a doctor's appointment or can i do it tomorrow? because if you try to do it this morning, right, it's just too loose on when you might arrive. you know, like you said 5, is backed up. this could take you, you know, in our war
8:10 am
longer than you saw in the new miss it and then you cause more problems. so let's say trying to get to school say can make it trying to get work, say, you know, i don't know. it's a sick but, you know, originally we thought that and the chp thought that there might be some kind of a protest that would affect the port of oakland. so they were station ready for port of oakland, a protest. but what's more effective in the protester's eyes here is that they're affecting the port there, affecting oakland at large. they're affecting just, you know, the whole bay area life in general for a lot those. >> folks in the east bay that are stuck in this right now. so that's kind of been there. their goal was to make life difficult so that spotlight would be put on the fact that the lives of people in middle east are difficult right now with the war between israel and hamas in gaza. they're calling for peace in the middle east. it's a lofty goal, but to get that message out, of course, they're disrupting the lives of everybody here in the east bay like they did when they pulled a stunt like this, a demonstration on the bay bridge during the apec summit. and here again, the closer
8:11 am
shot of the barrel. as you can see, demonstrators sitting one in between each of those barrels and in a number of instances, their hands outstretched into holes in those barrels, which is making it difficult for police now to figure out how to disentangle the mall and remove them and the barrels and the cars they came in off the that's going take some time. all right. we're going to back with more of our team coverage of this breaking news. and we invite you again to please be part of that. >> by sending your pictures of the backup if you're in it and anything that you see on a 80 there to breaking news, a kron 4 dot com. we'll be right 4 dot com. we'll be right back.

8:14 am
>> 8.13, is the time going on 2 hours now. almost that traffic has been blocked on 8.80, northbound 4 miles throughout oakland, starting here at the 5th off-ramp area and then stretching all the way back and be on 98th avenue. so we've been hearing a little bit from the chp in terms of their progress. we know this started at 6.30. story mentions been about an hour and 45 minutes. >> according to the chp and this is new information that we received here just in the last few moments in our newsroom that there are by their count, only 7 demonstrators, each one place between those barrels. so that's what they're dealing with right now. no arrests have been made just yet, but they are working to deconstruct disassembled those barrels so they can get inside and detach the hands of the demonstrators. each one has a hand sticking into a barrel next to them. right. and so that's what's been slowing down their progress just a little bit in terms of police clearing out the scene. and while this is the look at what happened when they first arrived, what we have seen on
8:15 am
social media is actually pictures of officers ear phones on, you know, like so that they can protect their ears and what appears to be sort of like a saw or some type of that will come metal qatar, right? so we definitely saw one of those barrels already sort of cut open. and that's how extracting and separating the protestors from the barrels and then of course, you're going have to deal as well with the cars that got the protesters there. those will have to be move. so they are it seems making some kind of progress, though at jazz. james said at last check, the chp said chp says so far no arrests have been made and we can see there's no movement at all. no traffic is moving and there are thousands of cars in this back. there is yeah. and by rough count, i think there are about 8 barrels about 8 barrels are so so did each of those come in a separate vehicle, get from offer their vehicles that are
8:16 am
abandoned somewhere in this back up as well. we're not sure. so that's just another factor that police are having to account for and get the resources out to the scene to take care of if it's, in fact, the case that they're going to be a vehicles that have to be told, by the way, because we have our live cameras like the one you see here, we will know. and we're monitoring chp when the roadway does reopen. we'll see it and you'll see it right here on kron. 4 live as we begin when we begin to see this traffic move. >> but i wouldn't hold my breath. and if you're leaving the house, do not join this traffic. and actually, john, we're going to bring you into the conversation as we continue a live look and our cameras just to talk about what you've noticed, like 5, a when this first broke at 06:30am, in the morning. it was like, oh, that was a great alternative. and then slowly say within the first hour that started to get jammed up. and i'm wondering if there's really any good way around now that doesn't take hours. you're good. raise around or almost laughable this morning because that 80 is at a standstill heading northbound.
8:17 am
>> 5.80, is you're trying to get from castro valley to oakland now taking almost as long. >> and now even the war and freeway is also backed up as people are trying get off 5.80, maybe highway 13 connecting to 24 will be better. it's also backed up now as well. so we're seeing all of your alternative routes really backing up as will be international running its way to the east bay. so here's my recommendations for you. if you are in hayward or obviously further inland in the bay, try to take 6.80, up to highway. 24 and then down. you're actually going to be really good to go out here. if you are further inland, of course, for those of us from san leandro on up through oakland and alameda, these areas right here are just completely at a standstill. so at this point, your best option will be actually heading southbound instead of heading northboond towards the bay bridge. just make your way south down towards the san mateo bridge. that will be much better for you. >> when a yeah. the golden
8:18 am
gate bridge we have just found out. let's look at it that there are no cars. look at thing heading. no cars are going southbound and that drive times up to 62 case on resettle. so here's the thing. that's the commute direction. now looks like no cars northbound. let's take a closer look at said on u.s., open northbound moving so golden gate bridge, southbound, we understand that no one's going by, which means that trafdic is stop somewhere. and we we we don't know yet. we're looking at social media and and any other reporting that we can. >> find to see if this is related to the protest because typically, john, as you're looking at alternate, if somebody need to really make him or were work around, we'd see more workhorses, more traffic on other bridges and other freeways. there's no traffic heading southbound on the golden gate. so is the second by. so you're also about to see more and more brake lights heading northbound 2, because it does look like we're about to have a backup forming.
8:19 am
>> for northbound commuters as well. so on the golden gate yacht on the golden gate. so you're these cars that are heading northbound. you see they're applying their brake lights. they are also it looks like going to be at standstill heading that direction to know. yeah, that back. it's going to grow. but defect that we see no traffic heading over the golden gate bridge into san francisco means >> that you can't get onto the bridge because no cars are on the bridge. so it is down right now is is shut down by the chp is shut down by protesters for whatevew reason to you as a commuter doesn't really matter. the fact is, you can't get over the bridge. southbound 101, on the golden gate bridge is block. you can't get there. there's no traffic heading over the bridge right now. >> so if we go back to the video of the demonstrators on the on 8.80, in oakland, one of the banners that they have up there, you can see back there is a 15 that's april 15th just today. and this is all part of as we're learning
8:20 am
a worldwide demonstration, a blockade the economies around the world. all in an effort to, you know, call for a free palestine. they claim the gold economy is complicit in what's happening in the middle east right now. and so they want to disrupt as much of the global economy today. to no effect change in their eyes to push us towards a free palestine. could be multiple events happening not just here in the bay area, but around the world as well. you'll notice that on social media today. yeah. the first thing we've seen today, i tried to strucked economies around the world and they and as you see on their messaging site, it says coordinated economic blockade, coordinated economic blockade for april 15th. and so >> if it is indeed coordinated, here's the golden gate bridge which is shut down. you can't get southbound. >> 101 from marin county over the golden gate bridge right now.
8:21 am
>> yeah, i was just looking at their their website which talks a little bit more about what they're doing today says the proposal states that in each city we will identify and blockade major choke points in the economy focusing on points of production and circulation with the aim of causing the most economic and they and they go on a reference as did the port shutdowns in recent months in oakland, california, i will burn and remember, by the way, remember when sfo was shut down by protesters that was coordinated to there was another shutdown in europe. >> some of the airports near were affected. so >> this seems to be their naming it april 15, a 15 so we could see more of this throughout the bay area. just be, i guess, be ready, be ready if you're trying to travel or get work done or get somewhere today and anytime, anywhere that could be affected because of this big
8:22 am
global call for action for calling for a blockade that disrupts people's lives. and that's what's happening here at the golden gate bridge you can see southbound golden gate bridge completely off limits. it is shut down right now. you can get from marin county to san francisco via the golden gate bridge and you can't get and here's in oakland from oakland from. >> 80 all the way through oakland. you can't get from here to there on 8.80, as well. so we're looking at what wg know what could be a really coordinated effort that has ripple effects and different trigger points all throughout the nation and the world. so san francisco's department of emergency management has just sent out. >> and alert on social media saying that a civil demonstration is affecting golden gate bridge. southbound into san francisco place. expect delays use alternate routes. they recommend you check 5, 1, 1 dot org for the very latest on that. but
8:23 am
again, now we've got san francisco's department of emergency management trying to get the word out that everybody needs to on the alert for demonstrations like this. we're seeing it at 8.80, in oakland, right near 5th avenue and now at the golden gate bridge. southbound heading into san francisco case. so many new details coming in kron 4 as we cover this live breaking news story that's affecting everybody in the bay area, the nation and in some cases, the world will be back with more of our team coverage go.
8:24 am
8:25 am
8:26 am
>> 8.25 and the breaking news is we've just found out that this is a bay area nationwide and worldwide protest that we're seeing happen right now the protesters for palestine, blocking roads all around the world. and that includes the roadway highway 101 that goes southbound from marin county into san francisco's. you can see over the golden gate bridge. it is stopped and we're beginning to find out that there are cities that are affected around the world. the same as we're seeing right here in the bay area. so the protest is called a 15 15 standing for april 15th. >> it is basically just a call for. groups around the world. as daria said, to disrupt the economies of the cities that they're in by blocking major economic choke points. so we saw earlier about 6.30, demonstrators blocked all lanes of northbound 8.80, in oakland right there, 5th street and here are looking live at the golden gate bridge where in the last 15 minutes
8:27 am
now, demonstrators are also blocking both north and southbound routes with the chp saying this is happening. midst span, all lanes blocked right now. and so you're being advised to expect delays, use alternate routes if that's even available to you. if you're heading down in san francisco, though, i don't know other than heading across the richmond, sandra fell bridge down 80, 80 and across the bay bridge. but otherwise that james, maybe just stay home. i got to tell you, because they've made it clear in this movement. >> that today is a call for blockading everywhere and anywhere. you don't know when and where these protesters think about flash mobs, the way that people participate in so these blockages are not only just happening here in oakland right now, the golden gate bridge, they could pop up anywhere at anytime. and i'm seeing right here just to give you an example, australia gridlock, 40 cities right now in israel. i sorry in in australia are seeing gridlock and pop up blockades happening
8:28 am
in their darwin, adelaide hobart. so that's just getting was able that across the world we're seeing this happened. in cities and and different countries around the world, i'm looking at video of protests at doc's international docks. protesters laying over roadways and other cities around the world. so the golden gate bridge is now part of it. oakland 8.80, is now part of it. and you don't know where and when, but some other road that you travel today could be part of this may be a day that you don't want to go anywhere if you do, if you can't help possible. it's a 27. we've got to take a quick break. back with more. >> breaking news coverage in >> breaking news coverage in just a minute. stay with us.

8:31 am
all right. we're 30's the time and for 2 hours now, we have seen demonstrators absolutely blocked northbound 8.80, at 5th avenue. >> in oakland, right near jack london square. there was an earlier warning from port of oakland officials that there was an expected demonstration to try to block the economic operations of the port. well, turns out the demonstrators have instead decided to block 8.80, itself. so the police that had been stationed at the port of oakland to respond to that potential demonstration are now on the freeway dealing with this. we're doing what they can to try and remove the demonstrators. but while they were doing this now, well, the babe, the golden gate, neighbors all talking as well, because, listen, if you actually, you know, so they got word that there might be a protest. >> a blockade, an economic blockade at the port of oakland. but what it turns out as we found out that there's
8:32 am
been a call for today, april 15th to be a blockade of everywhere in every different way. so around the world. so a quick scroll of the internet will show you what's happening at the golden gate bridge, which is blocked, which happening at 80, which is black is going on around the world. there's as we go through some of our traffic cameras. i just want to tell you i looked at in their 40 cities that are being affected by every kind of protests that you can imagine in australia right now, there are protesters all for palestine and for the israel-hamas conflict. but they are blocking roadways there blocking ports there, blockins traffic intersections. a quick look in the u.s. in philadelphia, for example, they're blocking the irs building in so today is tax day. it's april 15th. so what the core of this call for action is just too blockade. everything right? and it's a pop-up style. so they're just
8:33 am
saying do everything you can to disrupt the economy and to disrupt normal life. and so this is happening in cities around the world. is so you can expect anything could happen, right? so i mean, i have to say this is probably not the day that if you need to be somewhere that you travel right, as this could happen anywhere anytime. think this is not the day to hit the roads, maybe want to stay home. >> the demonstrators according to this website that sort of coordinating their efforts are put out this call for a coordinated effort. >> a spouse is that there's a need, they say, to shift from the symbolic actions which they had been doing to one that causes actual economic pain in these various cities around the world, including the bay area. it goes on to say together, we will coordinate to disrupt and blockade, economic logistic hubs and the flow of capital. so that is their main goal. that's why they're on the bay bridge or 80 and on the golden gate bridge this morning. do you know anymore, john, as you're looking at your traffic cameras about? >> i guess i'll start with the
8:34 am
golden gate bridge because that's the quick, you know, the most recent shutdown of golden gate bridge traffic. yeah, absolutely. so of course he's to a protest going on the first at the golden gate bridge. we still have confirmed that both northbound and southbound lanes are closed. >> it does look like that back up that stand. still traffic now extends all the way up north of sausalito to near the bridge way exit. so you do not want to be messing with that. of course, at this point, richmond, sandra fell bridge is your option. but you are going to encounter a little back up once you get to the bay bridge. but both northbound and southbound are closed at the golden gate bridge. so absolutely no one is getting to the tolls either direction. there. of course, the second protest which we've been following since 6.30, this morning. now it's 2 solid hours. it does have the northbound traffic on 8.80, closed down. so now it is a 2 hour drive to get you from san leandro to the maze. it's honestly going to be more than that. getting off international boulevard is
8:35 am
going to be turned plea good gridlock as well. and he 5.80. that was our recommendation earlier today is also taking you about an hour now from castro valley to the maze. that is obviously you're better option, but you're also going to a standstill traffic all the way from east oakland, clear the out towards castro valley and hayward. there best options for you if you are in the east bay is really just try to head southbound. get out of 5.80, get out of 80 corridor as it's going through oakland, try to make your crossings. if you need to get over the bridge over the san mateo bridge where the dumbarton bridge was your 2 best options. you can also take 6.80, just try to get around traffic that way by heading inland. but honestly, today is just not want to be moving around in the east bay. it's completely standstill, especially on the east bay shoreline routes like the dumbarton bridge are doing just fine. 13 minutes to get you across that right now. and the san mateo bridge is also doing just fine. thankfully, 18 minutes. so there are ways to get across. but right now, if you need to move north or south oakland, you're just not
8:36 am
going be able to do so. so really pick it. if you are in san leandro, it's the san mateo bridge for you today. if you're in alameda, go ahead and cross over to bay farm island. get down past the oakland airport, connect to the san mateo bridge that way. if you are in areas like oakland emeryville, try to head up towards the hills that direction highway 24 is going to be just fine, connecting you down through emeryville out over the bay bridge currently in the bay bridge itself is looking just fine. thankfully at this moment with 19 minutes. but of course, all go back to really that that second issue that popped up at 7.30, which is the protest blocking the golden gate bridge, which i can confirm still both northbound and southbound is completely closed. so your only option, there's richmond center fell bridge. and then, of course, looking at both atm 5.80, at standstill. 5 80's, you're better option. but there is no good option getting you through the east bay right now. and one more look just to
8:37 am
see what's the latest at the golden gate bridge toll plaza there just completely empty. no one is getting through again. darya james, north or southbound. all right. you know, we have been swept up in the bay area into a global day of action. >> to support to palestinians. and that's what's going on here at the golden gate bridge right now as its block. that's what's going on at 8.80, in oakland as it's blocked and there are other traffic blockades of ports and streets and buildings throughout the nation right now. this morning, it's tax day, april 15th. there are federal tax buildings that have been affected in philadelphia. there are cities that have been 40 cities in australia in the united kingdom in london, there's approaches all happening on monday. april 15th, there are disrupting economic hubs around the world, including right here. >> in the bay area. now that you understand why they're doing this, it's not unreasonable to assume that this might not be the only things we see today. we
8:38 am
thought it was confined to the bay bridge or to the stretch of 8.80, that you see here in oakland. but then no, we realized there was something else going on at the golden gate bridge. so we started doing some digging as to why this was happening. now that we understand this is part of a larger coalition, a movement to do a coordinated disruption today. don't be surprised if another economic hub, a point of transportation is disrupted at some point today. so right, and what's been going on is this all started at 06:30am, in the morning on a 80 and oakland. >> then it spread of the protests. were another protest broke out at the golden gate bridge. so that's had the traffic shut down there. and as you said, james, we could see this anywhere at any time today. so it's already impacting anybody who was on the roads already in these 2 areas. right? and that's thousands of cars and trucks and people that need to go places. you look at the back backups in the work around. >> but it may be a day where
8:39 am
if you you know, you need to be somewhere that you say i'm going to stay home today. i know that when we have gotten advanced warnings of >> big things that cause traffic backups, some people decide to do work from home to avoid the whole problem that maybe just the wisest thing to do today. but a lot of people have to get somewhere from 2.15, this tax day trying to run around, get to a doctor's appointment, something we're really concerned about people's health and safety. and we are any emergencies that could happen. and if you can't get from here to there and if there are any hospital staff or any ambulances or any patients that are stuck in traffic right now, they're trying to get to the hospital for an appointment for a surgery. >> for whatever they're all being delayed right now. so this is having ripple effects beyond just the economic impacts. >> the demonstrators were hoping to cause. and again, as you take a look at these various cameras showing no traffic moving, if let's say you're in the east bay and you do have to get to san francisco. bart might be your best option right now because at least get your past roads that are slow down or stopped
8:40 am
altogether. but you're going to give yourself a lot of extra time because as you might imagine, bart trains are going to be a little more full today. the typical because a lot of folks are probably going to be making that decision. there's also, as john was saying, the san mateo bridge that might at least get you onto the peninsula and then you can move up to san francisco or wherever you need to go. yes, it is the long way around. but at least you're getting around what is an absolute stoppage on 8.80. so that might be one of your best bets as well. and again, there's always the south, but you can hook down around and come back up. it is going to be a long day for folks that are already stuck in this traffic. but again, now that you understand why the demonstrators are choosing today, you'll understand we're going to devote a lot of our coverage this morning to getting you through this. we've seen in the past a one-off demonstration at the bay bridge, right? stop traffic for a day and that was followed with other one office around the world. we all saw the francisco airport, which is also, by the way, sort >> a call for an international
8:41 am
or worldwide. >> protest airports. and so we did see some other airports effect. they were all kind of one officer was and there one is as well dated and this one today. yeah, yeah. well, this one has a home, you know, website talking about the call to coordinate in. so that's exactly what's happening around the world. we've been caught up in it here in the bay area. we're going to try to help you steer around what's going on as much as we can possibly. and just warn you of what today could break now. so just keep it to kron. 4, not only on air, but also online at kron 4 dot com. we're going to keep you updated no matter what platform you're on. >> and throughout the day to between our broadcasts and also, if you would share your pictures as well breaking news at kron 4 dot com of any back up that you're in or anything you see as far protests breaking out, you could be top part of our coverage. all right. so stay tuned. we'll have more coverage in just a minute as we continue to follow this day of protest around the world impacting the bay area on 8.80, in oakland. >> and at the golden gate bridge will be right back.
8:42 am
8:43 am
8:44 am
>> all right. we're starting to get more news and information in as we comb a social media websites, new sites around the nation in the world and here in the bay area of a worldwide protest, the golden gate bridge is involved in this now and 8.80, in is a is a victim of this blockade as well. and all of these cars are part of it there in the back up as they have been for hours. it started on 8.80, at 6.30, in the morning with that back up and you can see the backup stretching here to 66 7
8:45 am
avenue and beyond. and then it moved about an hour and a half later, there was another protest at the golden gate bridge and that one is now shut down traffic on the bridge. so we're continuing to see the sort of pop up guerrilla pop-up protests story happening in the bay area and around the world. >> for palestine and to stop the war between israel. and while we have the school gate bridge map up and we'll get to john here in a second and talk about how the whole the areas being impacted by this. but >> we did get a tweet from the golden gate bridge authority. they say the golden gate bridge, sidewalks are closed to bikes and pedestrians at the at this time as well. the chp is on scene again. these demonstrations are happening. midst span. they have no estimated time of reopening and there may be a reason for that, too. when i because i said, wait, why would they block bicycles and people from walking on the bridge? >> because cars are in the way. but if i'm walking, i can get over. but more and more details are coming in about the sort of pop-up protests and they're taking different
8:46 am
forms. it's not just cars as we've seen blocking the roadway or protesters blocking a roadway. but apparently there are reports that there were protesters marching from the west oakland bart station, and they were kind of part of that movement to go into southbound 8.80, there when and well in southbound well, it's so it's really because of the way they're asking for this coordinated effort. they've got a whole website where they're talking about basically just do anything you can anywhere drop life as usual. it's happening in london. it's happening in other places in the uk. it's happening in on the east coast. it's april. 15th is tax day. federal irs buildings have been blocked in philadelphia. blockages in day in london. there's blockages of 40 cities are involved in various blockages in australia. so we're part of just seeing the tip of the iceberg here. and we don't know what the rest the day holds. so i would say if you don't want to travel today, if you need to go choose to data
8:47 am
from home, you can see here and and that. and that's a great point because these pop-up protests are going to take different forms in different areas because they're being led by. >> different people with different ideas on how to achieve that one singular message, which is to disrupt the economic hubs of whatever regions they're in, whether that's on foot, whether it's stopping a freeway, stopping the bridge will have to wait and see how plan how it plays out over the west of the day. but we're also seeing now social media potential calls for west oakland, bart stations to be targeted by some of these demonstrators. so keep an eye out. let us know again in your community. if you're starting to see these demonstrations, pop-up, send us a note, sent us a picture. breakingnews kron 4 dot com is the place you're going want to send that to. and again, as we look at the bay bridge or the golden gate bridge toll plaza, let's bring john into the conversation because he's in the traffic center right now. keeping an eye of the bay area wide maps and showing us where these backups are stretching out, how to get around them. because we've got these 2
8:48 am
major arteries, especially connecting. >> oakland to san francisco in the north bay into san francisco, completely blocked now. 8.80, northbound being that first blockage that occurred at a tva protesters and that 7.30, we the golden gate bridge closed southbound. here's a bit of a good news update for a northbound commuters on the golden gate bridge. northbound has been reopened, but southbound is still very much so closed due to those protests occurring on the golden gate bridge. currently, as you can see, there is no one making their way through the toll plaza really either direction at this moment. so it is complete standstill for anyone trying to get from the north bay into the city. the richmond sandra fell bridge is your only option there. now we've been watching this one all morning long. of course, protests on e a t blocking northbound traffic there and we are still seeing it at a complete standstill now stretching well past san leandro all the way up through oakland. this is the site of the closure right
8:49 am
here is where the protesters are right now. it is going to take you well over 2 hours to make your way from san leandro to the maze and even longer than that. now, 5.80, was your alternative. and it is at an hour right now from castro valley to the maze. so right now, really surface streets or just heading southward and trying to avoid the situation altogether. heading southbound on 8.80, or 5.80, trying to connect yourself to either the dumbarton bridge, which is only going to take you 13 minutes or the san mateo bridge, which is also going to be just fine for you, making your way across their only 18 minutes. if you do find your way over to the bay bridge, a preferably from taking 6.80, on over to highway. 24, i know it's a big loop around but going up and down the east bay shorelines and no, go right now, the bay bridge is fortunately still holding just fine. so again, just to reiterate, that is the golden gate bridge heading southbound. still a complete closure there. so getting from marin county or sonoma county into the city, just not an
8:50 am
option for you right now. as you can see, completely closed off. and then if you are trying to make your way from san leandro from oakland into the city, 80 is still completely blocked off as well. 2 hours there for your drive. time on a 85. 80 is your better option. but still not good. about an hour from castro valley to the maze. of course, if you can, that prefer abul option to do is to just try to get around it all together again, you can head south towards hayward and then cross the san mateo bridge over. so that will take you around all that mess trying to get in the city this way or if you are further inland. absolutely. do not take 5.80, head up 6.80, connector highway. 24 take your way down through emeryville and across the bridge this way. this doing just fine right here again. 24 emeryville to the bay bridge. if you are trying to cross the golden gate again, that is a no-go crossover. the richmond center fell bridge. that one will take you down 80, which is fine as you make your way
8:51 am
through berkeley and then just make sure to cross over the bay bridge. if you're going to be heading into oakland or san leandro. this is just an area that you want to avoid and head don't be heading northbound, especially from hayward or san leandro into oakland. you'll find yourself in that track picked head southbound and crossed at the san mateo bridge. back to you guys. and you know, we're finding out is that. >> san francisco, oakland, miranda, that we're all part of this worldwide blockade of the economy on april 15th. this call by the supporters of the palestinians to disrupt the economy and we are part of a call for over 50 cities across the world to have protesters take action to block commerce an and travel and that's going on in here in the bay area in australia and asia and africa in in >> blockades in the uk. so. >> barcelona, belfast, this is worldwide. we're seeing what
8:52 am
we're seeing here. and james comey also found information. if you guys can put out that video of the very first blockade that we saw, which happened on 8.80. >> were we saw those barrels? this is coming to us from the protesters. they have now revealed that they are part of this worldwide effort and they said that there are 7 people locked to 6 concrete filled barrels weighing 280 pounds each blocking the northbound 8.80, lanes. so we'll we start out. their hands are in these barrels may yet what's going on. but they are saying, quote, it will take several hours for this to be cleared up. the police are drilling into the barrels is what the protestors said in a manner that is extremely dangerous and reckless because remember, we saw some video of how the police were trying to disentangle and get rid of the protesters in the barrels on 80. all right. and now we know just how difficult it is. >> okay. so more details coming to light as we continue following this breaking news
8:53 am
story playing out here in the bay area. and in many, many cities around the world. we'll be back with more coverage in just a minute. okay. we're
8:54 am
8:55 am
back 8.54. is the time. and if you're just joining us, we do a quick recap. we'll have much more coverage at the top of the hour. but just so, you know, we have a complete stoppage of the golden gate bridge right now with demonstrators calling for peace in the middle east. but it's all part of a coordinated. day of disruption because we're also seeing demonstrators on 8, 80 northbound in oakland right at 5th avenue, completely blocking lanes of traffic there as well. and this is
8:56 am
part of his. i mentioned a global effort to bring attention to the middle east. so there are more than 50 cities around the world that are experiencing some sort of economic disruption at the hands of protesters who are calling for peace for palestine. and you can see here in this live shot, the hours-long back up that people are in miles long miles and miles, where folks that we're hoping to get to work on time or certainly not going to enjoy that today. as we're looking at long delays on 5, 88, 80 stretching south from where this occurred at 5th avenue, which is up near jack london square right before the macarthur maze, where you meet up with 9.80, and here at the golden gate bridge toll plaza camera. you can see there is no traffic flowing into san francisco because on the bridge span, we have demonstrators holding out banners blocking all lanes of traffic and also holding their arms tied to the cars that are blocking traffic at the golden gate bridge. anything they can do to make it more difficult
8:57 am
for police to bring. right. so it's him or i'm glad they've really expanded and kind of. >> up their game when it comes to making a difficult so so, ok, remember when the the protesters stopped traffic on the bay bridge? they just stopped their cars, chuck, their keys. and then they were out there and wouldn't move. but in that case, the golden gate bridge, we've seen pictures of the protesters and they are actually tied with tubes to their cars now. so now you've got to move the cars and the protesters at the same time. it's really complicated. going to last knows how stay tuned. much more coverage coming up in just a minute.
8:58 am
8:59 am
9:00 am
>> from the bay area's local news station. we begin now with breaking news. >> and the bay area being affected right now by a coordinated effort to blockade the bay area, the nation and the world in the name of palestine and these protesters have a coordinated effort. now to snarl up commerce traffic in everyday life in the bay area and around the world to make their point. and they're doing that both in the east bay at this hour and the north bay heading into san francisco. and there may be more locations to come. we don't know. we just know that the call has been put out. >> to disrupt as many economic hubs as possible whatever cities these demonstrators live in. and so we've seen it take the form this morning. a
