>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at 6. >> now it's 6 alameda county is apparently suffering a shortage of health inspectors allowing some restaurants to go at least a year without being checked out. thanks so much for joining us tonight at 6, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm ken wayne. we first found out about the shortage as we investigated an alleged rat infestation at a mcdonald's in oakland. the health department ended up shutting that restaurant down. but >> as kron 4 lezla gooden found out this county is understaffed and appears to be falling behind in inspections. she joins us now live in the studio with what restaurant workers are saying about this nasty situation. let's look. >> yeah, that's right, vicki. now how it works is that these health inspectors are assigned

to certain areas and restaurants that they keep a track up and they deal with everything from routine inspections and following up on complaints. so when i asked the alameda county health department for certain health inspection reports, i was told that some restaurants may not have recent reports because they do not have enough assigned inspectors due to a lack of staffing, meaning some restaurants are not receiving timely inspections. some fast food workers over the last few weeks have been striking. >> calling for better working conditions. one of them includes the yelp oil loco off of international boulevard in oakland here, workers have filed a complaint to cal osha claiming they have been nearly electrocuted due to flooding the kitchen where to put into it. >> really i. dane and the it was still asleep. 80. >> greasy. >> also, they agreed on fire at a california fast food

workers. union says the workers decided to strike for 3 days last week looking for improvement. we reached out to the alameda county health department who share that currently there was not in a sign health inspector for this restaurant and have been over a year since its last inspection, the restaurant past but received 5 violations, including an clean food and non-food surfaces, cleaning supplies, not properly stored bathrooms in need of working doors. it said the because but for today, com field for today, i can see popping up people about if i feea that we should focus that has been to be on brilliant because >> they still want us to run. this has said it is time that that they are quiet. so that is not kill. we asked the health department how many inspectors are needed to reach full capacity and what areas are currently without these inspectors. and we were given the following statement, restaurant inspector staffing shortages are a challenge for

many jurisdictions across the state are environmental health department is working to expedite filling vacant inspector positions. >> and we contacted the out why a local for comment. but we did not hear back in time for this report. so hopefully we hear something soon. >> indeed, you want to make sure that you're places are clean and otherwise just stay at home. so no idea how long it's going to take for the county to get up to full staffing and get caught up on these inspections. right. and we are not even sure how many inspectors are actually need it right now. and how many restaurants >> have not received their updated inspection. so we're hoping to hear back pretty soon. all right. stay on it. good job. thanks. >> developing tonight, a man who san francisco police chased across the city. >> after he allegedly hit 2 people, including a 14 year-old girl, has pleaded not guilty to all charges as kron four's. dan kerman tells us during his arraignment today we learned more about rodney jefferson's past run-ins with

the law and just how prosecutors say he hit that teenage girl. >> thursday afternoon, 54 year-old rodney jefferson pleaded not guilty to 2 counts of leaving the scene of an accident. reckless driving with great bodily injury, evading an officer and driving on a suspended license. the charges stem from his arrest tuesday for hitting 2 pedestrians and leading san francisco police on a chase across the city. authorities say tuesday morning's incident began with jefferson hitting one person while doing donuts at market in jones and then leading police on a chase across town during that pursuit. prosecutors say jefferson hit a 14 year-old girl who was in a crosswalk outside francisco middle school. prosecutors say a vehicle was stopped to let the teenager cross. but jefferson drove around that car and hit her. the student will survive but has a broken ankle, a dislocated shoulder and bruising to the head during thursday's hearing jefferson

made and inaudible outburst when prosecutors said he showed no remorse once arrested and instead went into a profane tirade about his driving skills. prosecutors also told the judge jefferson has 14 prior felony convictions, including one in 2018 for battery with injury on a school employee. the judge called tuesday's incident egregious and said releasing jefferson on bail was a clear risk to public safety. jefferson tried to speak up, but the judge silenced him and continued to explain why she would not be releasing him on bail again. jefferson will remain locked up without bail, at least until his preliminary hearing on may 22nd. >> at the hall of justice in san francisco, dan kerman kron. 4 news and a woman is speaking out tonight after the driver who hit and killed her partner and injured their son will be allowed to walk free. >> greg turnage was killed on mother's day in oakland while he was on a walk. the driver timothy hermano pled guilty to

hit and run leading to death vehicle manslaughter. but despite that victim's partner, angie bray says model will serve no time in jail or prison. >> greg made the choice to make me breakfast in bed with arson and to take a walk. and timothy hermano make the choice to so that drinking and san francisco behind the wheel killing innocent percent. >> the elamine in a statement, the alameda county district attorney's office says it did not offer a plea, but that amano negotiated one with the court itself model received 6 years and after having served 3 of those years will spend the next 3 on house arrest. gray says the family is pursuing a civil lawsuit against a mano coming up at 6.30, kron, 4 legal analyst michael cardoza will join us in studio for a deeper discussion about this case and other legal or legal matters that are happening around the bay area in the south bay, santa clara county authorities

made one of the largest fentanyl seizures ever in a san jose home. and it was found. >> under a baby's crib, 13 pounds of the deadly drug. authorities say they raided the home of 23 year-old crystal delgado and 27 year-old octavia moreno yesterday. and that's when they found the 25,000 fentanyl pills in a backpack. officers say they also found marijuana just a few feet away from the baby playing in a play pen and cocaine right next to the baby's formula in the kitchen, the parents were arrested on numerous charges. well, it's official in a unanimous vote. oakland board of port commissioners, they have approved the name change for the oakland airport. and san francisco says it's moving forward with a lawsuit to prevent that name change from happening. >> moving forward, the airport plans to be called the san francisco bay, oakland international airport. the meeting wrapped up just about an hour ago. the port of oakland says it sees nothing wrong with adding san francisco bay to its airport

name san francisco officials call it trademark infringement and say it will confuse travelers. oakland officials say they took a survey and customers seem to like the idea. however, that survey did not say what the new name would be today. we talked to some travelers ourselves to see what they think about the name change. >> you know that it's a great teams. i publicity won nationwide. it may better change. so people will recognize the name. like the name cause. i live here not only because going to san francisco and the last is something, you know, one of the people who don't live here, they don't even know the difference. >> francisco's city attorney's office tells kron 4, quote, it is disappointing that oakland chose to ignore our multiple offers to collaborate on alternative names and avoid litigation. we have no choice but to move forward with next steps in our trademark lawsuit, the port of oakland

says it will also move forward by updating its branding, even with a lawsuit on the table for santorum is talking to port commissioners right now about that decision have more tonight on kron. 4 news at 10 11. >> i probably felt it today. downright hot and fire officials are reminding everybody that fire season is fast approaching. they say that the soil still has a lot of moisture after a wet and snowy winter. so the brunt of fire activity might be pushed back a little later into the year. officials do say, though, that of the season is delayed. it's still important to be prepared like having a go bag, ready or doing some gardening on your home. they also say that signing up for emergency alerts in your county is a good idea. on that note, we're going to go check on our 4 zone forecast. a live words pretty warm there today. walnut creek, 6.80, this is the hottest day of the week today. yeah, this likely well tomorrow, maybe hotter and some parts may be a little bit cooler.

>> and others that's kind of the weather works out here in the bay area. but today, no getting around. this of the warmest days of the season. so far these temperatures a simply amazing out there right now. mostly clear little hazy out over the bay right now, looking down from mount tam, we are going to see that as you make your way toward the golden gate bridge. most that some see days as a little fog trying to form along the coastline. that will factor in your weather tomorrow. so a big variety and temperatures look at 59 now in half moon bay. still 79, though, just a further north in pacifica. 71 in san mateo, 67 now in san francisco. and still 84 very warm in concord. these temperatures simply amazing out there right now with those offshore winds blowing little bit of a seabreeze beginning to kick in. you'll see this one batch of great along the coastline. there it is. it's just off the coast about to move a little bit closer tonight with that sea breeze that some patchy fog out there right now that will likely change things along the coastline for tomorrow. probably see temperatures. there are a little bit cooler,

>> health officials in contra costa county say the opioid epidemic is worsening kron four's. philippe djegal reports that the county is receiving millions of dollars from settle lawsuits from manufacturers and is reaching out to the community for ideas on how to use it to combat the crisis. >> the state has settled several national lawsuits against opioid manufacturers,

distributors and other groups held responsible for the opioid epidemic and expects more funds in the future contra. costa county has already received about 5 million dollars of that money and health services is holding listening sessions for ideas on how to spend and combat the crisis. we are at a point where >> our approach has to also include some harm reduction in. this is something that we didn't he started alcohol and drugs. but we know that they picked the crisis is forcing us to change our approach and meet the needs the community. the county says the funding will be used for opioid abatement treatment and prevention activities need work with individuals who are not ready to embrace treatment. >> but cool may need acclimate take the narcan in that we could be saving lives by doing so. the latest statistics from the contra costa county meds coalition shows that county wide in 2022, there were 348 opioid related emergency

candidate for santa clara county sheriff or falsely certifying that she had the required experience to run for the job. >> 51 year-old and colton was listed on the primary ballot and received more than 4% of the vote based on our fall certification. state law requires candidates for sheriff have at least one year of law enforcement experience within the last 5 years or a certificate showing advanced training in law enforcement. colton had neither the district attorney's office says the number of votes in support of colton was not enough to change the overall outcome of the election. she was released today on time served. >> the bart board of directors met today in part to talk about huge budget deficit. also the fact that the passage of a 2026 tax measure is desperately needed first batter. he did live in our newsroom with the story. catherine. >> well, the bart board won't vote on a budget until june, but there has been a lot to talk about. new numbers were released today that show the projected deficits are even a

little higher than expected. >> they've been sort somewhat and i use this term rather loosely trudging along on pandemic money, which is about to run out. it's a big problem that is not going away. barred has funding for roughly 2 years. that's when pandemic aid money dries up. it tops have been penned on a 2026 tax measure. >> they can only hope voters will go along with nobody thinks part is going away. but if that measure does not pass. >> the cut some service could be drastic. imagine if just bart close at 09:00pm and certain stations were closed and no. >> no trains at all on the weekend. those are the types of things that our reality. i'm not anytime soon. we've got 2 years of that. we know that we have funding, but then we need to focus on that ballot measure. they still have to work and getting ridership up. they still have to work cost reduction and austerity types of measures. they will still have to work on those. >> one argument, bart still

has a perception problem. bart argues it has dramatically improved service and safety, including the presence of more officers. cleaner trains. what scares a lot of bart users and local leaders. however, there is no good fallback if that tax measure does not pass. >> there are no other funding options for us. we could go options for us. we could go back to the state an government and ask them to continue to subsidize bart as well as other bay area transit measures. and that's certainly something we would do if if needed. but the idea that there's no other funding streams we can rely on. i think it's highly unlikely, highly unlikely, not impossible unlikely that bart is going to go completely away reduction in services. yes. will the voters probably go for it? >> i think they made. >> to which bart is responding well, by a better. >> meantime has underlined again at today's board meeting the deficits just keep growing. vicki in cannes, thank you, captain.

>> all right. time now for a 4 zone forecast as we get a live look outside. spectacular day and orange short line. it's about that. yeah. i mean, really nice out there, guys. and we're going to see another hot one part of the bay area again tomorrow as the temperatures may be a little bit warmer, especially in the interior valleys. >> out there now, boy, it is warming up out there. if you had a chance to get a check it out today. what a nice day around the bay area. if you haven't had a chance, you still can sunset not slept for 8 o'clock tonight. so a beautiful evening to get out there. enjoy all the warm weather around the bay. are those temperatures just begin to cool down in some spots? overland. quite our nice and clear. right now, the sea breeze is blowing along the coastline just a little bit more that com temperatures warmed up just about everywhere, except right at the coast. check that out. that's a hint of what's to come as we cool down in the half. moon bay today as things are beginning to change along the immediate coastline. temperatures today, though, 81 degrees in san francisco. well, above the average 83 oakland, 86 in san jose. 83 in lemore. 86 in concord and 86

degrees in santa rosa. overall. looks like tomorrow. yeah. maybe even a little bit hotter. we can start talking about a couple of 90's beginning to show up in some of the interior valleys will look along the coastline. yeah, i'm much more comfortable out toward the beaches. you start to see a little bit of a seabreeze, maybe even a little fog as we get into first part of your weekend. well, you're starting to see those temperatures stay warm in the interior valleys, but continue not only just along the coastline, beginning inside the bay to, but it's going to be a slow cooldown process. you see that one big batch of fog out there right off the coastline, likely to see a couple patches along the coastline by tomorrow morning. i think a much more substantial fog bank by the afternoon. but evening to get out there and enjoy if you can't get out there, just sit outside. enjoy the nice, warm weather. the nice weather we've seen really all year long so far that's going to stick around. but it's going to be slow cooling trend. but in parts of the bay area along the coastline, you see the cooler weather there, hot 90's in some of the valley bypass. yeah, here we go friday, the weekend looking good, too. will have more on that coming up in a few minutes. looking for thanks. more small businesses in san francisco are getting a boost from mayor

breed's vacant to vibrant program. the latest round of grants announced today will go to a businesses in san francisco to fund. >> rent free store fronts for them through the summer. officials say over 1000 businesses applied for these grants and more recipients are going to be announced in the coming weeks. city officials say the goal is to support small business and community organizations well attracting more visitors downtown. francisco mayor london breed today saying in part, we are working every day to bring creative solutions and vibrancy to our downtown and neighborhoods across the city and they can to vibrant is a great example of how we're solving a vacant storefront while supporting our small businesses. >> still ahead at 6 lawmakers tackling hidden fees that are ramping up the cost of rent nationwide. we're going hear from an expert on what's from an expert on what's driving up the price. >> governor newsom is putting pressure on half moon bay lawmakers to approve housing for farmworkers. the 40 unit project would provide affordable housing for senior agricultural workers immediately following the half moon bay mass shooting. the governor met with survivors and he toured living conditions of the workers area. since then, he has budgeted millions in funding and resources to ensure that those workers receive support from the state. the half moon bay planning commission could move the housing project forward next week during their next meeting on tuesday. rents
