down. plus an east bay neighborhood on alert this afternoon after a mail carrier was robbed at gunpoint. bart service is now back. what caused the commute closures all morning for 6 stations in the east bay. >> from the bay station, you're watching kron. at noon. >> thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at noon. i'm justine waldman. we're going to start in the east bay where bart service has now been restored between the richmond and macarthur stations. it was out for the morning commute because of a equipment problem. kron four's terisa stasio gets us up to date. >> shut down 6 bart stations in the east bay on the red and orange lines between richmond and macarthur shuttered due to mechanical problems. the issue starting early friday morning around many of our other ones are not impacted at all. and if you can just get to macarthur or evon west oakland, you'll be fine. it's

just those 6 stations. >> we can't send trains through them. and that's because we have a wayside equipment problem that the crews are on site right now fixing we need to cabling. take a look here. bart spokesperson alicia trow says that bart employed workers to help riders connect with bosses. another. >> public transportation avenues to get to their destination. >> the true definition of a bus bridges when it takes you directly from one station to the next. we don't have that because our partner transit agencies don't have the extra buses and drivers this morning. but those stations have great bus service already. and so it's just getting you on the right bus based on where you need to go. so, yes, you know, ac transit, golden gate transit, west cat. they all stepped up to say bart riders can go on those buses for free at where you need to go to work. >> we need to go the way and that's it. so what going to do? with stay on? i probably

just take both trow says that it is unclear what caused the problem. >> at the north berkeley bart station to reese's stasio kron. 4 news. >> firefighters battling a major fire at a commercial building. this was about 2 o'clock this morning on moment, drive in fremont to the fire department sharing these pictures with us. and when they arrived, they say the fire was extending through the roof. the fire was knocked out in about an hour and fire crews are staying there just monitoring for any hot spots. no one was hurt. dented during the descent and alaska airlines flight hit a bird while landing at sfo. this happened yesterday afternoon. there is a dent there on the plane's engine. alaska airlines says after the flight from boston landed the plane was pulled from service for inspection. no emergency was declared prior to the arrival at the gate. we're taking a live look outside on this very warm friday. here's what san

francisco looks like right now. pretty day out there for sure. we have. >> gayle ong and the weather center with details on how hot we're going to get today. yes, another hot day for inland communities. we could see 90's and the first of the season. if that verifies coolest spot half moon bay, the beaches are back in the sixties today. so a drastic cool down from yesterday. so here are that readings right now at this 12:00pm hour. you see 60's on the beach is 73 degrees over in downtown san francisco. we're already seeing 80's over in concord and pittsburgh. also in santa rosa as well. and here's that temperature change of 14 degrees down. and we were this time yesterday, 5 degrees down in napa and 8 degrees down in oakland. so a bit of relief. but we are still going to be hot in our usual warm areas. and here are the current wind speeds. the winds have backed from the last couple of days. we're breezy. we have a mixed bag here. so we have that combination of a southerly flow over by the coast. and still those offshore winds. so that's why it is pretty warm. it is pretty warm out there in

san francisco. so for the rest of your day on this friday, we remain clear and calm the hottest day today. so we could 90's again down in our inland communities and then some coastal fog later this evening back in the 60's and 70's when i come back. well, talk about your weekend forecast because we have 80's and more sunshine. back to you. all right, thank you. another mail carrier was robbed in the bay area. this time it happened in dublin kron four's sara stinson spoke with neighbors and has the story. >> home security camera captures the terrifying moment. a mail carrier in dublin was robbed at gunpoint. this happened monday afternoon around 4.30, on a bespoke court video shows 2 masked men wearing all black approached the male woman. one point a gun at her dublin. police say the men demanded the carriers mailbox key and phone. you can see her go to the usps truck

to get her phone and handed over. then the 2 men run off. thankfully, the male woman was not physically injured. neighbors called 9-1-1 and police arrived shortly after to investigate. i went down to cul-de-sac. >> probably within 10 or 15 minutes after happen after seeing police in his neighborhood, mike grant went down to check it out. once he learned about the robbery, grant went to check his high-quality security camera system to see if it captured anything useful. >> that's when he saw what he believes to be the getaway car narrowed it down to this. a blue grants as police and the u.s. postal inspectors. investigators came by to get the video. he's lived in this dublin neighborhood for nearly 30 years and says only recently has there been a spike in crime. we've had a rash of crime on this west side of town. with that, something that kind starts to wake me up. grant says he's been talking with neighbors about ways to protect their

homes, to start putting some cameras up to help. >> and alarm systems and everything like that. be a little proactive is what i'm trying tell people. he also attended the dublin city council meeting tuesday to talk about the importance of security cameras, especially after monday's robbery. they got to start doing something. we >> have a lot of cameras in town, but they're not up in these neighborhoods. as for the mail carrier grant says he's checked in on her. she's going to take a month off of work to emotionally recover. you know, we're always out talking to her stuff like that. so she's kind of like family. >> so i stopped by just to make sure she was ok, i let her know that we're. >> all thinking about the postal service is offering $150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves. i'm sara stinson reporting in dublin kron. 4 news. >> commissioners at the port of oakland unanimously approved renaming the airport to san francisco bay oakland

international airport. this new name has been getting a lot of pushback from the city of san francisco and attorneys are involved here. kron four's dan thorn reports. >> san francisco city attorney david chiu has already sued on behalf of the city. and on wednesday he sent a letter to the port of oakland urging them to reconsider and instead have both maybe oakland and san francisco work together to come up with an alternative name. but the port of oakland moved ahead with their plans and they say that they'll also have a response to san francisco's lawsuit. there are now 2 bay area airports with the name san francisco in their title. >> a unanimous vote by the oakland port board thursday approved the switch from oakland international airport. to san francisco bay oakland international airport. nobody owns the san francisco bay and it is the most identify identifiable geographic >> indicator. and we happen to sit on on the san francisco

bay and we just want people to know where we are so they can come enjoy our beautiful city port port president barbara lesslie, along with other commissioners, says the name change will increase the airport's visibility. >> well, also giving potential travelers more options in the bay area. and a name kings change can certainly do that. that brings that knowledge for people past the mississippi to really understand where oakland sits in the greater bay area and also internationally, of understanding from people from around the world where oakland is. >> in this greater bay area. but the city of san francisco does not want this new name to happen. a lawsuit claims that infringes on san francisco international airport's trademark in a statement to kron for the san francisco city attorney's office says it is disappointing that oakland chose to ignore our multiple offers to collaborate. >> an alternative names and avoid litigation. we have no choice but to move forward with next steps in our trademark lawsuit, port attorney barry richardson has requested for a declaratory judgment as a counterclaim to

the lawsuit. she hopes the court will agree that san francisco bay is a geographic term and not exclusive to the city nor county of san francisco. we were not seeking money damages with that were only seeking a dnclaration from the court that we can continue to use the mark that the board to support. some residents did voice their concerns before thursday's vote saying if there's going to be more air traffic, that's going to create more air pollution in the city. >> but business leaders and city leaders such as councilmember noel gallo said the name change is going to be good for the airport in oakland, dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> and the airport director from sfo, you garza terrell has announced his plans to retire at the end of 2024, he has served as airport director since 2016, his career with airport began in 1994 as a program manager of transit managing the airtran and bark projects in the airports. 3 billion dollar master plan.

a search for the masks sfo director will be conducted in the coming months and during that time, so terrible remain in his position and oversee the transition. 2 new leadership. california has a budget deficit that that's projected about 27.6 billion dollars. this is according to governor gavin newsom. and right now he is unveiling his updated budget of that 288 billion dollars for the upcoming fiscal year. this deficit is smaller than the 38 billion dollars newsom anticipated in january. that's because it does not take into account 17.3 billion dollars worth a budget actions. he and lawmakers have agreed to take to close the gap. he's now proposing to help balance the budget by eliminating 10,000 vacant state jobs and suspending some business tax deductions. newsom says some of those cuts will also help balance next year's budget as the state revenues are projected to keep on falling.

some breaking news now just into the kron. 4 newsroom. it comes to us out of san francisco where fire crews are responding to a fire at a residential care facility. >> this is video from the citizens app and showing us cruise on top of the building. can see the ladder trucks out there. the building 4 stories. it's located in japan town on fillmore. >> just north of geary. fire crews say they got that first call about the fire just before 11 o'clock this morning. and we can see water being poured onto the building right now on some of the dripping there down the side onto the sidewalk. we do understand that 4 people were evaluated by medical personnel, but they are expected to be okay. we're working to get more information about this fire at a residential care facility in san francisco. more details as soon as they come into our newsroom. the alameda county health department is facing a

shortage of restaurant health inspectors and that's hurting workers at some fast food restaurants. >> this discovery is coming after we reported on the rat infestation at the mcdonald's in oakland where the health department ended up having to shut it down. kron four's lezla gooden explains. >> some fast food workers over the last few weeks have been striking calling for better working conditions. one of them includes the al play a loco off of international boulevard in oakland here, workers have filed a complaint to cal osha claiming they have been nearly electrocuted due to flooding the kitchen where to put into it. >> really i. dane and the it was still asleep. 80. >> greasy also they agreed on fire at a california fast food workers. union says the workers decided to strike for 3 days last week. >> looking for improvement. we reached out to the alameda county health department who

department is working to expedite filling vacant inspector positions in oakland. let's put that kron. 4 news. >> it's friday. we're going to talk about our forecast now with this pretty picture here. quite tower in san francisco, blue skies and breezy. we have gayle ong the weather center as we can go over what's going on. that actually is an important weekend. it's mother's day yesterday. we've got to get some sun out there for the moms. yes, and you know what? we will be warm. well, i see the 80's for sunday, much cooler, not the 90's, though, which could better. you know, we're comfortable temperatures here. we are across the bay area. we are mostly sunny. i know we started off with a shallow marine layer or by the coast, but we are clear statewide with a little bit of them really are in southern california, actually hugging the coastline. there. so we have high pressure that will be in control and the usual set up during our warmer months with that coastal fog in the morning. and then we clear out warmer temperatures inland. the winds have backed off. so we are quite breezy,

but right now we're relatively calm. we still have that offshore flow. so it is warmer wind. and then we do have a southerly flow over by half moon bay. they should kick up later this afternoon and evening when that sea breeze kicks in around 07:00pm and then it starts to calm down. so tomorrow saturday, it will be calm here. but we got another pop in the winds in the late afternoon and evening once again. so the coolest out to be is have been bay. the beaches are back in the 60's where you remember yesterday we're and some of the beaches like pacifica. we're in the 80's. so livermore is close to 80 right now. san jose 81 degrees. we could see 90's over inland. the interior valleys. so the usual area says santa rosa, you may see 90's today and we will be in the 70's in san francisco. here are the daytime highs were expecting to bump up to the 80's. as you can see here and close to the 90's as you make your way inland. so we'll see what verifies layer. but another hot day in store for the inland communities. and

here is the 7 day forecast. so mothers day weekend looks very pleasant. low 80's for you inland 70's by the bay and upper 50's by the coast. and it looks like we will stick around with this warming trend and back to seasonable averages for the coast. at least. but you still see a lot sunshine, a 70's and 80's on the forecast. back to you. cal, thank you. man accused of hitting 2 people including a 14 year-old girl during a police chase in san francisco has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. >> his arraignment yesterday revealed more about rodney jefferson's past run-ins with the law and just how prosecutors say he hit that teenager kron four's. dan kerman reports. >> thursday afternoon, 54 year-old rodney jefferson pleaded not guilty to 2 counts of leaving the scene of an accident. reckless driving with great bodily injury, evading an officer and driving on a suspended license. the charges stem from his arrest tuesday for hitting 2 pedestrians and leading san

francisco police on a chase across the city. authorities say tuesday morning's incident began with jefferson hitting one person while doing donuts at market in jones and then leading police on a chase across town during that pursuit. prosecutors say jefferson hit a 14 year-old girl who was in a crosswalk outside francisco middle school. prosecutors say a vehicle was stopped to let the teenager cross. but jefferson drove around that car and hit her. the student will survive but has a broken ankle, a dislocated shoulder and bruising to the head during thursday's hearing jefferson made and inaudible outburst when prosecutors said he showed no remorse once arrested and instead went into a profane tirade about his driving skills. prosecutors also told the judge jefferson has 14 prior felony convictions, including one in 2018 for battery with injury on a school employee. the judge called tuesday's incident egregious and said

for the first time since 1999 planet fitness is raising its basic level membership price. the new rate will be $15 a month. however, current planet fitness members will continue paying that original $10. the move coming after months of price testing across several markets in the u.s. planet. fitness says it will also test higher prices for it premium membership this summer. the company is doing these increases likely because it's motivated by a weaker than expected first-quarter revenue for the fiscal year. you need to make a lot of money to comfortably rent in the bay area. that's according to a zillow study of april rentals. according to the study, you need to make almost $133,000 per year in san jose to rent comfortably. that makes it the most expensive city in the study in san jose, the average household spends 25% of income on rent. san francisco came in number 4 on this list with the

here in san francisco. we're going update now on the temperatures with kron four's scale on how warm is it now so inland? we are already seeing 80's and take a look statewide. 88 and sacramento could see 90's and scared to go 78 degrees that we're warmer than las vegas. that 68 degrees a little cooler by the coast. so that's the huge difference from yesterday. so temperatures in the bay area as we speak, you can see we see 80's over in fremont. 84 degrees. 82 in livermore 82 in dublin, rather, 79 in livermore could see a close to 90's today and then i'll step out of the ways you can see the north bay in the 80's in santa rosa. 77 at point reyes station, a quick look at tahoe. you don't see the snow on the benches here in diamond peak. but you see that beautiful blue lake out there it is sunny. so heading out to tahoe this weekend, you are seeing mostly sunny skies in the upper back here at the coast. and this is the coolest place to be in the bay area, half moon bay and our beaches are back in the 60's for some

soon. we've got 2 years of that. we know that we have funding, but then we need to focus on that ballot measure. >> bart says the deficit deficit is partially due to declining ridership increase in labor costs and some other factors. the bart board is not going to vote on this budget, though, until june. new big changes could soon be coming to our utility bills. the california public utilities commission has approved a plan to implement a monthly fix charge for many people in california. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace has the details. >> we'll hear the state energy building where the meeting took place. supporters argue the plan will benefit low income californians, but opponents say will hurt the very people. it was supposed to help the vote is 4, 0. the item passes with that vote. the california public utilities commission or cpsc approved a plan allowing major utility companies in the state, including pg and socal edison and san diego, gas and

electric to impose a fixed charge on most of their customers, monthly utility bills. >> specifically the plan includes a new flat fee of $24.15 per month. coming up to about $290 per year. in return, the utilities will cut their electricity prices by 5 to $0.7 per kilowatt hour. supporters say the plan will help pay for grid maintenance and in the long run will make it more affordable for californians who need to use electricity for green technology like overnight electric vehicle charging backers also believe it low income californians noting per the plan those already enrolled in the low income, california alternate rates for energy program or care. >> will face a dramatically discount a monthly fee of $6. this is a fair proposal. >> implementing a reasonable fix charge that help support the fixed costs of the grid. we commend the cpc on taking action today in support of the fixed charge. >> and because of their action today, relief is coming to californians who need it most, but not everyone opponent help
