>> news station, this is home. 11. >> now at 11, a family mourning the loss of a 5 year-old boy after he drowned in the east bay. the latest on the police investigation. good evening. thank you for joining us tonight. i'm rob nesbitt in for dan thorn. we continue to follow a tragic story out of the east bay where a 5 year-old boy drowned in the back of a home on bethel island just outside of oakley, the contra costa county

sheriff's department responded to the incident saturday afternoon. neighbors tell us the boy was visiting family kron four's jack moment. reports. responders rushed to bethel i- island. reports of a 5 year-old drowned in bethel island. we had a young male drowned. >> landing over there. john sullivan, a neighbor says each of these homes has a dock news hitting close to his home. he says this tragedy was praying for you know, it didn't work you're the rescuers did the best they could. neighbors tell us the boy was visiting relatives in the complex and fell off the dock in the back of the home. so neighbors say a drowning like what happened here on friday is really uncommon. some of them have been living here for years and say they've never seen anything like it. >> but they also said at the same time, water safety is at the top of mind spreading sand words of advice for people who have boats just like this one. i'm very sad about it. hearing about it that that breaks my

darlene weaver has lived here for 3 years and says she's never heard of a drowning in this community until now. i'm not blaming the parent, you shows just don't so quickly, right? so accidents happen. that's why they're in. this he is so important. weaver says her family are all experienced swimmers but make sure they all wear life vests. you know, we're in the get down to it without investment has more. boaters are expected in the months to come. >> weaver says water safety to her. his personal, you know, the delta. it's serious, you know, is that current that under current, we've had lots of friends that are not lots but several friends. >> that have succumb. so we don't we won't get out there without a vest. >> on bethel island, shock moment. kron 4 news. it's been a dangerous weekend on the water all around california. crews in placer county responding to reports of a woman who allegedly fell in the american river this

weekend, according to state parks and recreation's earlier this afternoon, authorities were able to find the woman in the water. unfortunately, officials say she died from her injuries. investigation remains ongoing. the body of a mother who went missing days ago has been recovered in the san joaquin river on thursday stand saw stanislaw county deputies responded to a call of several people in the water drowning in the san joaquin river at fishermans bend, 30 year-old brenda duran had jumped in the water to save her 11 year-old daughter who begin to struggle in the water. her daughter was able to get out safely, but and did not resurface saturday. volunteers helping with the excuse me recovered her body in the river just outside of the town of newman in the wake of this tragedy, the status la county sheriff's office is reminding people to always wear a life jacket. hundreds of people gathering in san francisco to celebrate the life of reverend cecil

williams. reverend williams was known for his work as a civil rights and lgbtq activist. he died last month at the age of 94. he co-founded glide with his late wife and devoted his life to activism. kron four's. sara stinson reports. >> 800 people packed into the sanctuary at glide memorial church in san francisco sunday to honor the life of reverend cecil williams looked around at all the people here, overflow people, the sanctuary. this 11 feet right the people he passed away on april 22nd in his home. his daughter kimberly shared what he was like in his final hours. i want everyone to know she was radiant and full of and like that day for more than 60 years, the reverend fought for civil rights and champion of the lgbtq+ community. whether that the people living on the street or notable politicians like

congresswoman barbara lee. >> i sat right over there in 3rd probably the 3rd sing and every sunday. reverend williams helped me through some very challenging, very challenging personal times as well as former san francisco mayor willie brown, vice president kamala harris and political activists, professor angela davis. >> who under until lgbt community. political activists like myself, williams first came to san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood in 1963. to help run glide, church and glide foundation. quickly after he made the brave decision to make the church inclusive to all. >> when he stood up for folks in the lgbtq community to get rid of the stigma. and this

city that did not embrace this community williams and his late wife, janice america, tony, expanded glide to become what it is today. a safe haven providing food and services to thousands of people a year that the crack epidemic is and the streets. >> you know, engaging the public 6 no ha ve he never shied away from those new issue he wasn't going to >> the celebration of life for williams was filled with music, love, laughter and tears. he put people on my past. >> to show me the way. i have to be out on the streets. was a product of my environment. >> san francisco mayor london breed recalled growing up in the city and being able to lean on the reverend. >> and to see him and to look. as this giant of a person with such courage. with such fight with such strength, hope come fall.

you know, we will be cooling down, but still above average, far inland communities in the 80's 70's by the bay and the coast will be cooling down to the 50's and 60's this week. back to you. all right. thanks, gayle. >> in san francisco, firefighters work to put out flames at a hotel in the russian hill neighborhood this morning. a fire at the broadway hotel on polk street forcing residents to evacuate just after 6 crews say several streets had to be shut down. they have since been reopened. one person sustained a minor injury. firefighters were able to quickly put out the flames. no word yet on what caused the fire. smoke bellowing from a fire out of the port of oakland today. a spokesperson from the oakland fire department says it was caused by a lithium battery at the port video from the citizen app showing a large cloud of smoke over the san francisco bay around 3 crews got the fire under control. no injuries were reported.

>> mother's day celebrations all across the bay area today. this is video from union square in bloom. they celebrated mother's day with salsa dancing in the fashion show. there was bright floral displays and a local designer unveiled luka toward local pop ups at the ferry building in san francisco are also celebrating mother's day, offering free flowers, filipino style food and drink vendors and local plant vendors where there are also local artists. one even using a 3 d printer to make plant holders and 3 d dragons. pretty cool. >> coming up. >> oakland's police chief addressing the city tomorrow where he's expected to speak for the first time as top cop and back to back break-ins, forcing a well-known restaurant owner make a tough decision. we hear from the chef alum, of the crimes impact on business.

now to our 4 zone forecast taking a live look from mount tam cam kron four's gayle ong joins us with a look at what's to expect. pretty shot there, gayle, tonight. >> yes, that we have the return of the marine layer, which we saw over the weekend and friday as well. so it's that typical spring and summer like set up where we see the clouds over by the coast, it will stay around and then it will clear out in the afternoon for our inland communities. and it will come back tonight in the evening. so you can see this view from the east bay hills. so we will be waking up to some mild temperatures, though, but for the future cast model, we will speak loud as you can see here. this is midnight overnight and then your morning drive could run into some valley fog over by santa rosa livermore and patchy fog over by san jose and napa. so the usual areas we get that. so just keep that in mind for your drive. late morning, we start to clear out in the east bay and then things will mix out for you inland. we'll see mostly sunny skies but notice

will be cloudy over by the coast and then towards the evening, it will return back to the east bay shoreline like oakland and towards hayward and parts of fremont. so that will be the set up. you know, we have the clouds and the warning. and then we clear out inland in the afternoon and then it comes back in the evening. so these are the overnight lows and notice that cloud cover on this map as well. it will be quite mild in the upper 40's and low 50's and then we will be warming up inland. now we will still remain warm in the 80's inland, but we will still be above average, but we're cooling down places like the east bay, you'll notice a cool down, especially from friday where we saw some 80's and 90's around the 50's in san francisco, in hal moon bay and the rest of the beaches. and here is that 7 day outlook. so you notice will be warming to wednesday inland will hold on to the 80's and will stay in the 70's across the bay for much of the weekend on the coast will be back to seasonable averages. so come thursday. that's when
