80 82 still looking good darya. james, back to you. thanks. a lot of on our top story is for people are displaced after a fire broke out last night at a buddhist temple in san jose. for more on this story, let's go to will. tran is live in san jose. will what can you tell us? >> well, i can tell you early on investigators, james, they don't believe this is a hate crime. any time religious structure catches on fire. that has to be considered. but they don't think so. at least not at this point. you can see the damage. it just destroyed this wing of the temple. it's located on 97 fosse avenue just off of the alum rock avenue and 6.80. in fact, i can still smell a little bit of smoldering. they stayed here late last night to make sure the hot spots are out. but i'm sure they'll have to back out a little bit later this morning to deal with it. not to mention to try to find the cause of the fire. now, let me show you pictures. this

all started at around 8 o'clock last night for people, as you mentioned, were inside, presumably monks. they had to come outside and fortunately they were not injured, not treated. and i can tell you that other buddhist temples in san jose, they will be staying at those locations because even though it happened at a wing of the temple of the damage was enough for them not to be here. the fire department. well, they just simply don't know at this particular time, especially since it was dark. james and ari, a no reason to investigate at that time, which is why they put the gate right in front of it. and we do expect him to be back out a little bit later this morning. now that the sun is up to try try to find out the cause of the fire. back to you. all right. thanks a lot. we'll check back with you later. >> 703. on the clock and breaking news this morning. the national highway traffic safety administration now launching an investigation into waymo's self-driving cars. the agency posted

documents detailing the probe on its website this morning. they received apparently 22 reports of waymo cars at crashing or doing something that may have violated traffic laws. the document states that cars hit stationary objects and in some cases the crash happened shortly after the women driving system behaved unexpectedly after or near traffic control devices like stop signs and stoplights. the agency says the probe will look at the system's performance in detecting and responding to those traffic control devices. waymo is headquartered in mountain as we know and it released a statement saying they will work with the agency. during this pro at 703, and a big story that we're following. are breaking into honda, specifically more and more. >> for the part lee, a spike in san mateo. and that's where kron four's michael thomas is live with the story. michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. san mateo police tell me essentially they think that these these are trying to resell airbags from these hondas and within a four-day span, there was more than a

dozen honda's that were broken into those drivers. side windows completely shattered. this is video some of the vehicles that were talking about now the senate to police as last week between thursday and saturday. they got a total of 17 calls regarding car break-ins and specifically honda's. they say the thieves are stealing steering will parts that contain driver airbags. and also using a screwdriver to get in and take a look. these are some of the details on your screen. these parts are worth up to $1000 or so. police say and hundreds are being targeted. the most specifically civics accords and see rv's and all that are 2015 or newer. as of right now, will drivers are advised of these tips that are on your screen? they say the park in well-lit areas double check the car alarms and make sure that they're working. also if you can get some security cameras outside your home or at least go out and buy an old school security club that lies across the steering wheel as it would make it harder for thieves as the steering most

specifically is where they're trying to get into back out here live. i did just speak with the information officer from the police department. he says specifically southside of san mateo is being targeted the most and it's mostly residential areas. so he says he does believe that they possibly may be selling these parts online at some point, but they do have some leads. they're still investigating. so as they get more, you know, we'll continue to keep you updated. but you'll hear more from him within the next hour. that's a very latest here in san mateo, michael thomas, tara and james, we'll send it back to you. okay, michael, thank you very much. >> 705, and oakland's new police chief is on the job now. here is yesterday in his first day of work, floyd mitchell started monday with a meeting of members of the department, including new recruits. he last worked as chief in lubbock, texas. now chief michel says one of his top goals in this department is building public trust. >> i'm looking forward to working with you and with members of the community to

can say someone spend the rest of this week attending different meetings to get brought up to speed on several different things going on within the local police department and within this community. >> the chief also met with the command staff and went over the latest crime figures. and here's one for a figure. burglaries are down by 51% since last year. but residential burglaries went up by 110%. so he's got his work cut out for him in the east bay. a man was convicted of killing a woman who he used to live with. her remains were found in alameda out last summer. the alameda county da announced yesterday afternoon conviction of joseph roberts. he was found guilty of second-degree murder for the death of rachael buckner. she was from pleasant him and her body was found dismembered along the shoreline of bay farm island last summer. buckner and roberts live together at the time of her death. we don't know when he'll be sentenced. >> in the north bay solano county police are looking now for an inmate who apparently

walked away from a conservation camp. they say that james jones was serving a seven-year sentence for robbery and other charges. he was last seen on the campgrounds wearing a gray sweatshirt and pants. police are asking anybody out there who knows where he is to contact them immediately. 5 people, including 4 children, tried to run off with the cash register in valais over the weekend. police say the register that they stalled had a tracker inside and that's what allowed police to track them down. police say the theft happened saturday. it was a business on tennessee and amador streets. officers say one of the suspects hit a cashier with a handgun before taking off with that register, police found and arrested all 5 suspects. police also found a gun and the stolen money. >> 708, right now. and as it starts to get warmer around the bay and heading into summer, it is important to be vigilant when you're around the water over the weekend, there were multiple drownings in one case, a 5 year-old boy

drowned behind behind a home in bethel island in contra costa county. and in another case over the weekend, a mother died in stanislaus county when she tried to save her 11 year-old daughter fell into the water in the san joaquin river. the daughter is okay. but the mom didn't make it. several organizations say this highlights the need for water safety as rivers are moving dangerously fat fast and with the snow melt there, freezing cold temperatures. >> have a flotation on your body when you're in or near that cold water staying out of the current really aware of where you are in relation to fast-moving current. >> let's say you see somebody is going under and you're afraid that they are drowning immediately. call 9-1-1. and then they say try to reach the person with a rope or a pole or throw them if you have flotation device, do not try to go into the water after them yourself because then you

could become another drowning victim in a lot of cases. there are failed. rescue attempts. right now in dozens of parents and students in the east bay are scrambling now to find a new school because there's abruptly close the elementary and middle school, new horizons had its last day of school on friday. the principal says low enrollment limited staff and financial troubles led the school to file for bankruptcy. the school could not afford to keep even the utilities on. they still owe at least 16 staff members, their salaries and at least 8 families. they were unaware of the closure and they ended up up paying off their tuition early as $14,000. so now they're going to wait 90 days in the make a request for reimbursement. >> we're going to take a break here at 7.10, but still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news, a security guard stopped a thief at a coffee shop in san francisco. going to tell you what happened. plus, after the

following the post covid boom indeed does have an office in san francisco. it's on mission street. >> well, red lobster is shutting down at least 48 of its locations nationwide. and one of them is here in the bay area. the company has announced the location in rohnert park. he's going to be closed in addition to those closures, the supply liquidators now apparently auctioning off kitchen equipment from those closed locations this week, red lobster has been facing some recent financial challenges, including filing for bankruptcy last month and posting an operating loss of more than 11 million dollars. red lobster has more than 700 locations globally. artificial intelligence is now being used in factories and warehouses to help protect people who workaround for cliffs of conveyor belts and other heavy machinery software made by san francisco based corporation cop sciences. process is video recorded on the company's existing security cameras and that highlights potential dangers for staff. the software can also see workers

>> the new warning from the fbi and the department of homeland security about potential threats ahead of pride month. they say that foreign terrorist groups like isis might exploit increased gatherings that are happening because of lgbtq+. community celebrations and everything else. the fbi is urging law enforcement and the public to report any violent threats that are made online or in person and they say watch out for suspicious activity like, for example, someone taking photographs of entrances and exits of a venue or anybody asking about security or crowd sizes without an explanation. >> 7.25 is the time. also in the news today, convicted

killer scott peterson's defense team is trying to get him a new trial by gathering new evidence. the stanislaus county district attorney's office, though, is opposing that motion. so the loss angeles innocence project are the ones representing peterson now and they want to test dna on rope and a stolen van that was murdered or that was burned near the peterson home at the time that his wife, laci went missing. da's office is asking the judge to deny that motion considering all the evidence was previously used to convict peterson peterson news you may remember was convicted back in 2004 of the murder of his wife and their unborn child. peterson has maintained his innocence. he's now serving life sentence in prison. in the east bay. a man has been sentenced to house arrest for shutting down the computer network of the discovery bay water treatment facility back in 2021. prosecutors from the department of justice say that rambler gallo, purposefully and installed some software from that computer network, which is the system that runs the automated monitoring for

tackled the alleged thief to the ground and held him there until police arrived. security cameras thankfully cut the whole thing on video. unfortunately, we did not get permission to use it. it literally felt like everyone inside the cafe was screaming. henry flynn was enjoying a cup of coffee outside sanaa cafe saturday evening when he says he saa man running out with a laptop. flynn works as a security guard. so he says it fell natural to take matters into his own hands. i saw someone running out with a hood. >> with a lot of talk in the right hand, almost like a football player would run with the football. i think the momentum of him running in the opposite direction of my arm, pushing him in another direction, made him stumble over towards one of the cars. that was part. and then i had the ability jump on top of this video from frisco live 4, 1, 5, shows san francisco police arresting a 19 year-old man and flynn talking with officers afterwards about what learned from police that the man had snatched a laptop from a woman

and they found it had been reported stolen out of concord officers found the driver of the motor home has 3 warrants as well. so he was arrested and booked into the san mateo county jail and the motor home was towed away and returned to its rightful owner. take a look at what happened in fairfield. a car flipped on its side and police ended up arresting the driver for dui and hit and run and they found these 2 guns in the car. they say the driver actually had first tried to run away after crashing, but officers caught up with them. >> in pacifica man now under arrest after driving away from a crash and then hitting a parked car. so police say a 2 year-old child was in the car with him at the time. this was saturday. officers say that

deval do aguilar ran a red light and to stop signs before crashing into the parked car. this was on and the way police say they recognize his car from a previous hit and run crash on highway one. no major injuries reported. thankfully the child is fine. aguilar now facing multiple charges, including felony child protesters rally outside of y, - google in mountain view this morning to call on the company to divest itself from israel. the rally is set to happen during the company's i o conference where that they'll be announcing some new products and innovations. the protesters say they want google to end its work for the israeli government and military. that rally set to start at 9 o'clock this morning. it will be out at the shoreline amphitheater. >> it's 7.34. and today in the north bay, home care workers in sonoma county are going to rally at the board of supervisors meeting. they want better pay among other things. the union representing workers says the workers are paid less. then the living wage in that county and that the low

wages are contributing to a shortage of caregivers. that rally is supposed to start within the hour at 8.30, this morning at the board of supervisors meeting in santa rosa. and in san francisco nurses with the department of public health are going to be voting today whether or not to authorize a strike. the union representing the nurses says they want the department to implement safe state staffing practices, agreed to competitive wages and contract enforcement. they say that the department has rejected all of these proposals and that they're refusing to negotiate a fair contract. and in response, the members will take that strike authorization vote today. we did reach out to the department of health, but we haven't heard a comment. >> in the south bay, a group of silicon valley nonprofits plan to rally outside of san jose city hall and asked the city for more money for affordable housing. the group is called the real coalition and it's asking city officials to do more to preserve money that would fund permanent housing solutions in response to a proposal. they say matt

mahan mayor matt mahan is pushing the proposal would divert money away from measure e which originally set aside money for affordable housing city officials are considering using that money instead to clear homeless encampments along waterways and place. residents in temporary shelters. their rally is set for 12, 30 this afternoon. >> it's 7.36. we've come to a major setback now in the effort in vegas to stop vegas, taxpayer money from being used to build in as a stadium. yes. so this proposed ballot measure was written by the nevada teachers union. >> it will not be appearing now on their next election ballot for dan kerman explains why. when nevada lawmakers approved spending 380 million dollars in public money to help fund a stadium in las vegas last june. >> the nevada teachers union took steps to reverse that decision by putting the issue to a public vote. this november. now that won't happen. the nevada supreme court upheld a lower court ruling that the proposed ballot measure was not written
