owners on the peninsula. but authorities say teams are targeting. and the golden state's wnba team finally has a name and a new look. we have all the details. >> from the bay station. you're watching kron. at noon. >> thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at noon. i'm justine waldman. we begin with protesters who are rallying outside of google's headquarters in mountain view. they're calling on the company to divest from israel in all. this is happening during the company's i o conference where the company plans to announce some new products and innovations kron 4 s charles clifford joins us now live from mountain view with the details here. thanks for joining us. >> well, good afternoon. yeah, there are protesters here outside the google headquarters in mountain view upset about the conflict in gaza between hamas and israel is going to take a look at some video now. they arrived here early this morning. several 100 protesters gathered on the sidewalks

outside of google's headquarters. they have chosen to be here now because as you mentioned, google is hosting a developers conference this week with thousands in attendance that's being held at nearby shoreline amphitheater. protesters did block one of the entrances to that event, although attendees been able to get in through other entrances, these protesters are particularly worried about what's called are known as project nimbus of cloud computing effort by the israeli government. in partnership with google and amazon. they're worried that the technology could be used against civilians in gaza for things like surveillance or facial recognition. and they are calling on google to leave that project. >> i think it's a company like google has to make a decision. are they going to take a stand and state what they want to support and what their technologies can be used or are they going to be passive and you know, whoever is willing to pay will look the other on how you use those technologies. and it's pretty clear what the right answer is

for our collective will be. >> alright, now that of those and conference could cause some traffic delays throughout the afternoon. as that conference gets a later today. also, we did reach out to google for comment this morning, but so far not heard back. but for now, in mount mountain view, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> charles, thank you. and there are 50 former google employees who have now filed an official complaint against the company for unlawful termination. it comes in response to the employees holding a sit-in protest at the google offices in sunnyvale and in new york, they were protesting a 1.2 billion dollar deal known as project nimbus that provides artificial intelligence to israel. the workers filed a complaint saying google unlawfully retaliated against them. the national labor relations board has not yet set a timetable for reviewing the case. the pro gaza encampment at welt field at

usf is now facing a 03:00pm deadline today. the university informing students if they voluntarily vacate the field by 3 this afternoon, they will not face code of conduct repercussions. students who do not vacate the field will have no amnesty and the code of conduct process for a time place and manner violations will commence immediately. the university's president citing hateful discriminatory incidents by those in the demonstration against the jewish and israeli community as unacceptable. we're following the story. well, updates for you this afternoon. thieves are breaking into honda's for the cars parts police have seen a spike in san mateo and kron four's. michael thomas has the details. >> senate police department says last week it received 17 calls about car break-ins and all were hondas. the model's most targeted civics accord and cr-v knees and all were 2015 or newer. and officer jeremy threats as these thieves are after specific part, pacific lee for their air bags on driver's side or

their driver steering wheel. >> and that's something that we really seen in the past. >> he goes on to say these thieves use a screwdriver to pop open the steering wheel and once they've got the goods, they may be reselling them online as these parts can resell for up to 1000 bucks. you know, over the last couple years, we've had the catalytic converter thefts were criminals would still the catalytic converters off the car and then somehow we sell >> to get money. we assume that this is same time the bank. >> the break-ins are all happening within a specific area of san mateo. and now the department says these may try to move on to other areas, which is why they want people to be aware. as of right now, they've been south of the 92. so. >> so a lot of our vehicle break-ins are residential neighborhoods that are close to close to freeways. >> as of now, drivers are advised to park in well-lit areas double check their car alarms and invest in security cameras if possible. lastly purchasing a security club that lies across the steering wheel. could be your best bet. as it protects a specific area. these thieves are going

for. >> that was michael thomas reporting for us and national highway traffic safety administration has lauiched an investigation into waymo self-driving cars. the agency posted documents detailing the probe on its website after getting 22 reports of waymo cars either crashing or doing something that may have violated traffic laws. these documents state, the cars hit stationary objects and in some cases the crashes happened shortly after the waymo driving system behaved unexpectedly near traffic control devices. the agency says the probe will look at the system's performance in detecting and responding to traffic control devices. waymo says it makes more than 50,000 weekly trips with riders in challenging environments. waymo is based in mountain view and has been operating robot taxis without human safety drivers in arizona and in california, we did release a statement saying they will work with the agency during this probe. now the alameda county sheriff's office is

asking for help right now trying to find this at risk. missing woman laurie allen son walked away from her care facility in san leandro on sunday night. she has dementia does not have a cell phone and may not be able to find her way back. that's according to law enforcement. she's 5 foot 8 and was last seen wearing cheetah print pajamas. anyone who knows her location or ceaser should call 9-1-1. the fbi now warning about potential terrorism during june pride month. the feds are saying foreign terrorist organizations might target upcoming lgbtq+ events. the fbi wants people to be alert and know that terror groups or their supporters might take advantage of increased gatherings that are associated with pride month. this morning is coming as we approach the 8 year anniversary of the pulse nightclub shooting in orlando, florida, where 49 people were killed. the fbi saying some indicators of a potential threat include violent threats made online in-person or via mail, taking photographs of

security equipment or personnel requesting information of events and crowd sizes with no explanation and attempting to bypass security or in person. 8 law enforcement. >> we should take that warning from fbi and the department homeland security seriously and follow advice that they issue, which is to be vigil, our community. we will not be cowed. we will not be intimidated. >> to report a threat you can contact your local fbi office. authorities are also advising people attending pride events to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. san francisco, sure even co is going to move its flagship store and headquarters to palo alto. the jeweler has been a fixture on san francisco streets since 18. 52, it will close its store located at one 50 posts treated union square and will begin a liquidation sale on may 17th the decision to close. the san francisco storm

resistance, no land to go over red cross that straight the bridge itself and go off to the east bay. well, there you see the fog trying to peel off a little bit there in marin county. but for the most part, we're looking pretty good across most of the bay looking at here this the visible satellite picture. so all the whites that you see here, that's cloud cover. but it's also in this case, fog there you see along the coast a bit. also up north, nothing in the east bay. now, let's take a little bit. they're hanging around solano county a little bit. there cows, certain fog left over onshore. winds will continue for today. but take a look at our temperatures as the skies open up inland. seeing those numbers move to the east bay little slower up in the north bay lower 60's. 67 santa rosa, 59 san francisco. a lot of fog trap to for half moon bay at 55 62, by the way, for oakland. and as we talk about skies opening up, temperatures are also doing better. we're ahead of the progress from yesterday. in some cases, almost half-a-dozen degrees where winds are kind of going away from water right now, as you will see, will continue on with that onshore program for

>> 4 people have been displaced after a fire burns, a buddhist temple in san jose kron four's will tran has the update >> an update to the story. the fire department just got back to me and they definitely believe this was not a hate crime. they have to consider that every time a religious building catches on fire. the possibility might be somebody came out here and set it on fire. but the update is they believe that people were outside of the area outside of the building cooking and then the fire spread to this building here and you can see the damage. it did. the fire department rushed out here,

but not before the fire ripped through this swing of the buddhist temple. there's literally a hole in the ceiling right now. 4 people were inside presumably months. they were able to get outside. nobody was hurt and they are staying at nearby buddhist temples in san jose. let me show you a picture of the fire. it actually started at around 8 o'clock last night. the fire department got here and they realize that the flames are very intense that they actually called for backup. they stayed here late last night to put out the hot spots. then they were able to leave this scene. yes, investigators will be back out here to look at exactly where the fire started, but they believe it was on the outside area and that they are calling this early on and accidental >> all right. let's talk about our weather forecast right now with a live look outside here at the bay bridge from this direction. this bridge, dave,

no fog or clouds here. when you showed us the goal, a great golden gate earlier was a little different. so what do you think that for the rest of the what school look like that from a good chunk of the bay? it looks like heard. look at the numbers, by the way, speaking of which we're at 79 for antioch. look at that. >> 72 for livermore up north, lots of 60's because we had early sunshine and i brought back the fog for you just in. that's right. this is the look coming in from half moon bay. this is a problem area. and by the way, for the weekend, when we have this low in our backyard, that's going to be a facilitator for some issues going forward because it's going to provide that really thick, aggressive marine layer that may bring us some drizzle all. and it makes it difficult to clear. so the golden gate is always showing earlier. that's a little problem area, visible satellite picture reveals what you discussed. we're clear over most of the bay, but they're couple pockets of resistance. futurecast for there's the flare up of a few leftover showers in the mountains coming in from the east. now. they area fills up with the fog by wednesday morning. pretty quiet on the mountains

there by comparison, running out of moisture. and there's the mix out activity for wednesday afternoon. again, you can notice around the coast. it's a little rough going to get that completely cleared out. fog does a nice job for thursday. morning 2. and here's the coastal drizzle i referenced and we get into the weekend again. that's when that low gets closer to home. we're going continue on with a little local winds here. that means that onshore wind. you can expect it be breezy in the breezy prone areas in the afternoon, picking up into the lower 20's and also teens with us this afternoon, a stray 65 san francisco, mostly sunny and cool. now 68 for oakland, 81. meanwhile for san jose 83, you can see off to for highs. livermore about 81 wood in pop about 80 at the santa rosa with the coast. chilly 58, half moon bay about 65 san francisco. wider perspective. this is how the lower 48 looks. dallas going for 83. 75 for atlanta. 89 little bug there is covering it up and let's get a little closer to home. coastal numbers are still hanging around 60 or so. but this is what they will look like later today. lower

90's and central valley, 63 san francisco and even down in southern california. we're looking at mid to upper 60's in a bit. we'll take a look at longer range forecast for you. just eat. dave, thank you. a 5 year-old boy drowned on bethel island in contra costa county over the weekend and kron four's rob nesbitt. >> talked with a first responder about how to stay safe in and around the water. >> more people will be spending time by the water as temperatures warm up. but this is also when rivers are moving dangerously fast because of the snow melt. an important time to be vigilant. the middle of may and california's rivers are moving fast and cold. it's a dangerous time to be in the water and first responders have been busy. the waters of the san joaquin river in stanislaw county claimed the life of a 30 year-old woman after she jumped in the water to save her 11 year-old daughter. we've had, you know, multiple. >> fatality incidents just in the last week contra costa county, a 5 year-old boy drowned over the weekend on bethel island. larry collins

with cal oes fire and rescue says each fatalities serves as a sad reminder of the importance of water safety. exactly what we've been warning against. have a flotation on your body when you're in or near that cold water. >> staying out of the current really aware of where you are in relation to fast-moving current may is recognized nationally as water safety month and the organization courtney's cause works to prevent drownings, especially among kids. >> director of operations catherine rich says anyone living near water needs to physical ways of stopping their kids. your family with a dock. >> with the river like pretty ups to their house having some way that barrier that would prevent a child from being able to access whatever of water that is safety measures at your home and on vacation. >> as families prepare for trips this summer, ridge encourages parents to keep water safety. a top of mind, ensuring that there's a fence.

this afternoon memorial day travel is expected to set records this year. both here in california and across the country. >> triple a says 5 point. 56 million californians will travel for the holiday and 82% of them will be driving. that pattern extends across the country with a record number of americans choosing to travel by car. they say gas prices are roughly the same as last year. but may creep a little bit higher due to oil prices and the worse overseas. new data is showing us that california has high unemployment. the federal

reserve says more than 480,000 california residents lost their jobs in the 1st quarter of 2024, our state's unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.3% in march. more than 1 million people are unemployed in our state, california's tech and information sector suffered the biggest change in year-over-year decreases with over 53,000 jobs last just last month, tesla announce a major layoffs and its workforce, including including almost 3,000 bay area employees. e-bay also eliminated 1000 positions and google laid off people and its engineering and advertising departments. new study shows that pork prices are surging in california. this is coming as a result of the implementation of prop 12, which prohibits california an out of state farmers from selling eggs, pork or veal that come from animals in non compliant housing prop 12 past 2018 and it raised pork prices in our state by almost 20%

seeking the public's help locating a assault suspect. police say on april 9th. >> a young girl walking home from school was pulled under a freeway overpass of then sexually assaulted the police say the 50 year-old julie ann salvador martinez was the attack. sure. and he was riding a dark colored bicycle, their pictures of him here. the call did manage to fight him off. who got away on the by school them and their martinez. disses described as being 5 foot 11 inches tall with dark hair and a thin mustache. anyone with information should contact san jose police. the major setback in the effort to stop public money from going towards the stadium in las vegas. this

proposed ballot measure written by the nevada teachers union will not be appearing in the next election. kron four's dan kerman explains why. >> when nevada lawmakers approved spending 380 million dollars in public money to help fund a stadium in las vegas last june. the nevada teachers union took steps to reverse that decision by putting the issue to a public vote. this november. now that won't happen. the nevada supreme court upheld a lower court ruling that the proposed ballot measure was not written correctly and petition signatures cannot be gathered until it's read and to comply with state law fighting billionaires is never easy. this is just minor setback. alexandra marks with the teachers union schools over stadium says the ruling means the measure won't appear on this november's ballot because now there are only 44 days left to rewrite the petition and then collect the 102,000 signatures with no state elections in 2025. that means the next chance for a public

vote is november of 2026. but schools over stadiums remains undeterred. this still remains incredibly unpopular locally. it still underwater 20%. >> you know, preventing the teachers from going out there ensure every student has a high-quality public education is probably not going help with their polling either. but, you know, we we remain committed to try and help fix the misguided priorities of the state. so not much has really changed. in a statement, the attorney who represents the coalition opposing the ballot measure, which includes the a's, was pleased with the ruling saying all nevadans have a right to participate in direct democracy, but they need to observe the laws that require properly informing the voters of a proposal. this measure failed to do that. all they did was delay if they were hoping for a quick decision and calling it a day and saying that they want that's not what they got today as part of a 2 pronged attack, schools over stadiums has sued the state of nevada saying the passage of that funding measure violates nevada state

constitution. that case is yet to come to trial. dan kerman kron, 4 news. it is state bill seeks to increase the penalty for drivers caught speeding in sacramento. lawmakers and advocates held this protest calling a die in. >> they say they want to raise awareness about the thousands of people killed due to speeding. they want this new bill passed saying that it would add 2 points to the driving records of those who go over the speed limit by 26 miles an hour. right now, the punishment is one point and that can usually be raced from a driver's record by going to driving school. driving is not a game. >> and it's not a chance to go a 10. your vin diesel. that you're in fast and furious it's a deadly weapon. speed kills. should be doing so much more. but least we can do. it's send out a warning to people if they're going to be driving recklessly fast. the teamster trade union opposes

the bill. they argue the proposal will unfairly impact commercial truck drivers. >> in the north bay solano county police are looking for an inmate who they say walked away from a conservation camp. they say that james young was serving a seven-year sentence for robbery and other charges. he was last seen on the campgrounds wearing a gray sweatshirt and pants. police are asking anyone with information to contact them immediately. >> happening right now, a group of silicon valley nonprofits rallying outside of the san jose city hall to ask the city for more money for affordable housing. the real coalition is asking city officials to do more to preserve money that would fund permanent housing solutions in response to oppose all they say mayor matt mahan is pushing the proposal would divert money away from measure e which originally set aside money for affordable housing city officials are considering using that money to clear homeless encampments along waterways and place. the residents in temporary

shelters with the november election, less than 6 months away. the department of justice says it will track down anyone who threatens election workers as kron four's. catherine heenan reports officials are promising their prosecution will be relentless. >> if you threaten to harm or kill an election worker, volunteer or official, the justice department will find you. >> part of the reason this is making news again, the new survey showing that more than half the election workers in the country are worried about their safety. and with the november election just months away, there is concern that angry sometimes dangerous political partisanship will only escalate 3 years ago. the justice department created what it calls the election threats. task force among the 17 prosecutions and 13 convictions. since then, election threats. task force

has secured the guilty plea of a man who threatened election worker in michigan. the defendant made vile threats saying that the election worker deserved a, quote, throat to the knife. >> we secured a 3 and a half year prison sentence for a man in texas with threaten the lives of arizona election officials and their children and advocated for a mass shooting. poll workers and election workers increasing see believe had, quote, suspect results. >> the problem, not new. this is what michigan secretary of state told a senate judiciary committee in 2022. >> my son standing in a driveway. picked up a stick, turned to me and don't worry, mom, if the bad guys come get them with this. he's 6 years old. >> election officials say it's not only the threats, they're worried about things like funding and the use of artificial intelligence to spread false information. the fbi director says his office

has been trying to help for years. >> each of our 56 field offices had election crimes coordinators, special agents and intelligence analysts. stand ready to field threats if they arise and coordinated response. catherine heenan. >> kron. 4dnews. >> over the weekend, customers at a san francisco cafe stopped a man from taking off with the woman's laptop kron four's. sara stinson spoke with one of the people who stepped in and prevented this theft. >> police say a man ran into this cafe, grabbed a laptop and ran right outside was a man named henry flynn who tackled the alleged thief to the ground and held him there until police arrived. security cameras thankfully cut the whole thing on video. unfortunately, we did not get permission to use it. it literally felt like everyone inside the cafe was screaming. henry flynn was enjoying a cup of coffee outside sanaa cafe saturday evening when he says he saw a man running out with

a laptop. flynn works as a security guard. so he says it fell natural to take matters into his own hands. i saw someone running out with the head. >> with a lot of talk in the right hand, almost like a football player would run with the football. i think the momentum of him running in opposite direction of my arm, pushing him in another direction, made him stumble over towards one of the cars. that was part. and then i had the ability to jump on top of him. this video from frisco live 4, 1, 5, shows san francisct police arresting a 19 year-old man and flynn talking with officers afterwards about what happened. flynn learned from police that the man had snatched a laptop from a woman sitting inside who thinks to flynn and others got it back. >> did you speak to the woman who is left of? it was afterwards. i did. they're really cool. husband or boyfriend. yeah, actually, i my phone that what i was running after the guys. so they like the minimum. can we venmo you a little bit of money? just so you can get your phone fixed and i would because not really too worried about that. this video has

bay, a private elementary and middle school in newark not only ends the entire academic year early, but it has closed permanently kron four's foot tall spoke with the owner who says he feels terrible that the sudden closure caught the community off guard. >> back in december, marshall and company property management filed a property commercial eviction lawsuit against new horizon school in newark, which is still pending in alameda county superior court assigned to private elementary and middle school that opened in 1988. was on the brink of collapse, though many parents and staff members were unaware of how dire the situation was principal and owner victor dawson says he could not even afford to pay utilities leading to his swift

some treats a parmesan. an egg which smell and taste very different to his regular meat diet. so you can investigate and climb through the leaves searching there. always fascinated me what a tasmanian devil like actually looks like. a bird expert considered to be extinct in the wild. at a zoo in kansas. this is a guam, kingfisher and it's considered to be extinct in the wild by the international union for conservation of nature. there are currently 141 left in the world. all of them are under human care and alongside the recovery program. and in national collaboration between wildlife experts around the world are now working to restore the wild population of the species video released here showing us the bird being fed and waved a wade by staff at this zoo. that's in wichita. vide here showing us the moment. a very clever coyote at a texas zoo
