president made with protesters on his campus. thanks for joining us tonight on kron. 4 news at 5. i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow sonoma state university president mike lee has been placed on administrative leave after the school system's chancellor said the agreement he made with protesters came. >> without the appropriate approvals. kron four's rob nesbitt joining us live from sonoma state tonight with reaction from students and faculty rob. >> noel in grand, this is person field behind me where students had set up a tent encampment sonoma state. as you can see, no tense right now because of an agreement that president lee made with demonstrators in agreement that led to him being placed on administrative leave. >> a dozen tents once occupied the campus of sonoma state university. all in protest of the ongoing war in gaza. now there are none after university president mike lee reach an agreement with demonstrators that included divesting from israel. students like cameron, amber

were frustrated to find out that the agreement led to president lee being placed on administrative leave. >> i just think it's like really stupid. this like he even makes it like it's kind of crazy how a statement about lake ending genocide is like. crazy, crazy thing that has to put someone on leave or >> the agreement laid out. a three-page letter was the clear to win by student activists groups. but it also drew backlash. what agreement was establishing a palestinian curriculum. but professor of anthropology, alexis bhutan says there wasn't enough input. >> the nature of the program being in southwest asia, north african studies was made without consulting with subject matter. experts in the middle east of whom i consider myself, one of them. president lee's agreement also came with backlash from outside groups including the bay area, jewish community relations council ceo tyler gregory says the agreement was a civil rights violation. >> it's actually endorse an academic boycott of israel. that means that israeli students, professors, with vast knowledge not around

jewish studies alone, but from all the science is israel's a start-up nation after being placed on administrative leave? president lee put out a statement saying that in his attempt to find agreement with one group of students, he marginalized others taking full ownership of any hard because he's done a really good job up until now as president. i think he did not handle this. >> this situation well, but i personally would hope you'd be given another chance. no word from the university on how long president lee will be placed on leave. >> graduation at sonoma state is scheduled for saturday. and professor bhutan hopes that the commencement ceremony go smoothly without any interruptions for protests reporting live at sonoma state. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> a new pro-palestinian demonstration has taken over the now vacant and ahead building at u c berkeley. the

takeover started yesterday, but more tents and barricades are going up as we speak. it is several blocks from sproul hall where protesters set up an encampment several weeks ago. uc berkeley officials say the 2 groups are not associated. instead. school officials say this group violently and unlawfully broke into the building. police are calling it an active crime scene. as you can see in the video, protesters took over part of a building many wore masks and refused to talk to reporters. one person did shout out the demands. >> from people car how all right. the caught happen.

>> uc berkeley leaders recently struck an agreement with those protesters who had camped outside sproul hall for weeks promising a series of steps to examine the university's investments. >> about 48,000 academic workers in the uc system now have approval to go on strike in a vote last night. the union representing those workers say they believe the university's mishandled demonstrations at uc campuses specifically at ucla are counter protesters attacked a pro-palestinian encampment for several hours without police intervention. the vote does not guarantee a strike. 8 of the uc campuses still have another month of instruction before the summer break. melissa mattel, the associate vice president of systemwide labor relations for university of california called the idea of a strike illegal saying uaw is decision to strike over non labor issues violates the no strike clause of their contracts with uc and sets a

dangerous and far-reaching precedent that social political and cultural issues no matter how valid that are, not labor related can support a labor strike. >> on capitol hill, house republicans are trying to send more weapons to israel. they voted today to reverse president biden's decision to pause a shipment of 3500 bomb some as large as 2000 pounds. the house bill condemns biden for initiating the pause on the shipment and threatens to withhold funding for the state department. the department of defense and the national security council until that deliveries made the measure, experts say is likely to die in the democratic led senate. stay with kron 4 on air and online for the latest on the war from campus. protests to the conflict on the ground in the hostage situation. just head to our website kron 4 dot com. >> san francisco police are looking for man who they believe attempted to kidnap an 11 year-old boy in the mission neighborhood. they say the child was walking to a bus

stop near 20th and mission streets yesterday afternoon when a man driving a van approached him, that man pushed the boy into the van, but the boy was able to fight off the alleged kidnapper and ran away anyone with information on this should call police. new warning tonight from police in los altos. they say thieves are breaking into empty helps. >> police there say burglars have been breaking into these at the homes that are listed for sale or that are under construction and they're stealing staging items, things like appliances. police are urging people to report any suspicious activity and they want folks to make sure their doors and windows are locked when they are not home. walgreens executives say the generic brand of naloxone or narcan will be available there over the counter by the end of the month. the product will be in the paint aisle pain relief. it is a lifesaving medicine here. used to reverse opioid overdoses last year. more than 107,000 people died

from overdoses. most of them involved opioids. the walgreens generic brand will cost about. 35 bucks, which is $10 cheaper than narcan. >> the plan to bring 2 giant pandas from china to the san francisco zoo is still on track. but government bureaucracy is slowing things down a bit. step one is to allow the mayor and a number of city departments to begin raising funds for the panda project. but today the resolution failed to make it out of the supervisors subcommittee kron four's dan kerman reports san francisco is hoping to take delivery of 2 giant pandas from china. >> by the summer of 2025. but making that happen will involve raising millions of dollars thursday, the mayor's office asked the government audit oversight committee to authorize a waiver allowing the mayor as well as 5 city departments to start raising 25 million dollars in donations. we spoken to sandy. we spoke in washington, d.c.. >> we've spoken to atlanta.

we've spoken to the other zoos that have hosted pandas to get a general sense of what the costs are. and that's the number they provide to us. >> but nothing is that simple. we all know that our city faces a significant financial challenges over the next 2 years. yet we seem ready to mobilize substantial funds and focus on up and the pen. but not for are vital youth programs. supervisor and mayoral candidate cautious. a fi complained the mayor should instead beginning a waiver to raise funds for the department of children, youth and their families, which is facing a 25 million dollar budget cut. >> the mayor's office said they would support waivers for both endeavors and supervisor catherine stefani agreed you don't have to put one issue up against another. >> i don't think it's impossible to seek private philanthropic dollars for pandas as well as programs supported by dc wyeth and our children. and i just think that if we're going to get into these mutually exclusive

wars about we can't we can only do this and not do this. i just don't believe that we should limit ourselves like that. stephanie, in the mayor's office favorite moving the resolution on to the full board of supervisors. >> for a vote at its june 4th meeting. we need to start raising money right away. i don't think it's ready to be forwarded to the to the full board. but fellow committee members supervisors, dean preston and connie chan voted instead to bring the resolution back to their committee with changes among other things they want to list of potential donors and interested parties. they want to consider narrowing the number of city departments to can raise funds and they want to explore whether the money raised can also go towards deferred maintenance at the zoo. well, some might see this as an unnecessary bamboo barrier. others see it as a committee doing its due diligence. however, you see it. it means panda fundraising efforts won't begin at least until mid-june, if not later. dan kerman kron, 4 news. our

weather time here. and if europe i hope you like the fog because we have plenty of it. >> a lot of it today for sure. lawrence, what's going on? yeah, i play that fog. thick marine layer out there right now. only breaking up a little bit hard to get in to surge back on shore. so here we go again. we're going to see plenty of low clouds and fog stretching onshore. tonight. looking san francisco, a cool night in the san francisco. that wind is blowing that onshore flow. the fog out there a little misty out there as well. so we've got some 50's now into san francisco. still 70's and warm and let more 71 in palo alto. 74, when the warm spots in san jose right now, the cooler. 64 in oakland. but overall, you can see it right there. all the clouds along the california coastline just swirling on him about to move back on shore right now. ready for that nightly run of low clouds and fog. more drizzle on the way to and that's going to penetrate further on shore tonight. high pressure start to weaken a little bit. that's going allow that marine there to move further inland. so next few hours, yep. you head out the door and grab a light jacket, especially inside the bay along the coastline. the

>> general motors robo taxi company. cruz has paid a settlement to a san francisco woman who was dragged by one of the company's self-driving cars that crash in october along market street led the california dmv to suspend cruises. driverless taxi permits investigators have said the crew's car dragged the woman about 20 feet after she had been hit by another car. the woman suffered life-threatening injuries. fortune magazine reports the settlement is between 8 12 million dollars. san francisco city officials are celebrating a major milestone in their homeless outreach program. last year. the city launched its hart, which stands for homeless engagement, outreach response. this program is meant to engage with people experiencing homelessness as

an alternative to a law enforcement response. the city says they help about 300 people every week in the first year, hart addressed more than 13,000 calls to service and completed all of those requests, including blocked sidewalks and even small encampments. hart also placed 144 people in 2 emergency shelter or the waitlist and completed 168 applications for calfresh and medicare. >> happening now, teachers at fairfield sassoon unified are wrapping up a rally at the school district's officer trying to bring attention to contract negotiations. organizers say they want to attract and retain highly qualified educators with the salary that keeps up with today's cost of living. so far, though, there's been no progress with the school district and they want contract negotiations to resume. similarly teachers with the contra costa county schools, education association are hosting a rally at county

office of education. this is video from a rally they held a few years ago. currently their bargaining team is sitting down with the county pushing for an increase in salaries and proper intake procedures for students. the group says it may strike in the fall if a deal is not reached. ahead of what the tsa expects to be the busiest summer travel season ever. special needs students along the peninsula took field trip today to san francisco bay oakland international airport kron four's philippe djegal reports some of the kids are considering future careers and travel. >> simulated flight to hawaii for students from over bay middle school in san carlos thursday starts like it does for all of us who fly the tsa security screening at san francisco bay, oakland international airport. ask questions before boarding southwest airlines captain sean welsh explains with the kids with special needs should expect on reassuring them.

outgoing flights at sfo. no delays in oakland or san jose. looking good air quality. looking like a lot of green around the bay area. we do have one center tipping over justice, a moderate amounts of some clues in the atmosphere in the oakland area. otherwise, i think we're looking good air quality wise, even high pressure will begin to weaken. and that means going to see a stronger onshore breeze. and it's a pressure air going to continue to flow across the entire bay area as we head through tomorrow, probably the weekend as well. that breeze, though, is kicking up outside. you can see a bit of a westerly component. the winds civica gusting to 25 temps just over 20 miles an hour. even 17 in oakland. so that wind, that's what it's going to carry the low clouds and fog a move that further on shore. the marine lair sitting about 2000 feet or so that's getting pretty deep now. so it's allowing it to make its way further and further into of interior valleys, even but all along the coastline. you see the california coast enjoying all that fog to the north. there's actually a cold front that front going to get a drop in as we head toward the next couple of days. that's going roll over the top of that ridge and probably helped

weaken the ridge little bit and cool us down and bring us a little more fog overnight tonight. look at that. filling in all the way to the central valley, even the interior valleys, the tri valley, looking a lot of fog there. the napa valley all the way down the santa clara valley, too. as we head toward the middle the day tomorrow, things begin to break up and then guess what? because a surge back on shore as we get toward tomorrow evening again. so here we are. summer pattern here. a pretty typical this time of year. but boy, we're kind of settling into the sting a little bit early. and so you never know. yeah, i there. they talked about june gloom, but we're well on our way and may well, those 2 hot weeks and may made me say all right, they can put away the jacket, right? keep that jacket a very handy things aren't right. >> new at 5 pickleball and tennis players in san francisco could soon have to pay $5 to reserve some courts around the city city's recreation and park commission voted last night to require that fee when people make an online reservation at 28 of the 55 courts, the remaining courts could continue to be available on a first come

first serve basis. you can find the full list of the courts on our website. kron 4 dot com, the city's board of supervisors will get a final say on that proposal. >> bay area residents, a lot of them ditch their cars for a more eco-friendly commute today because it is bike too. wherever day in san francisco, the bicycle coalition hosted a rally at city hall this morning to support the mta's biking in rolling plan. that plan proposes more accessible bike lanes across neighborhoods and bike safety education programs for kids. the coalition says almost everyone can benefit from the climate friendly activity. >> it's the day that we really invite everybody around san francisco to just to try out biking for everyday transportation and see how much it improves your day. we hear from people all the time that it's not as hard as they think it's going to be. and it just blew up lift their mood. the feeling of camaraderie is

building is being evacuated this evening. we will continue to update you as soon as we hear back from a tom wallace. >> big milestone tonight. oakland unified is the first district in to have all electric school buses. yesterday was the first day the buses were officially used manufacture. say all 70 for buses. we'll also provide energy to the city when they're not transporting students to district leaders say these buses will help reduce emissions in the community. >> talk a lot about equity in oakland. equities is the center of what we do in the school district. the families of oakland are disproportionately disadvantaged in affected by high rates of asthma and exposure to air pollution from diesel fuels. so by electrifying and having this vision. we're not worrying about students being sick. we're not worrying about emissions. >> buses look a little different. they are very

different. zoom. the company behind the buses says it plans to tackle the san francisco and los angeles school districts next. and as more electric vehicles reached the roadways, gas tax revenue, which funds road repairs is declining. so california is going to test road charge program to help fill that void. the state is recruiting about 800 drivers to participate in a 6 month study that will start next year. drivers will be required to pay road charges each month based on the number of miles they drive for their participation california will pay each person about $400 in gift cards. they will also get a gas tax refund at the end of the pilot program. sounds pretty good. just pilot program. you can sign up at see a road charge dot com. >> coming up is the next burger. you eat safe from bird flu? what a new report is revealing about safety and it
