san francisco, looking for then speaker of the house, nancy pelosi. she was not home at the time. instead, it was paul pelosi who woke up, looked out from his bed and saw the pap standing over him. he managed to quickly call and very, very discreetly call the san francisco police department. they arrived. they got to the door and that's when prosecutors say des pappas plan unraveled. he hit paul pelosi 3 times on his head with a hammer. paul pelosi had a fractured skull, woke up in his pool of his own blood. they are call, of course, arrested him on the spot. they did convict him of attempted kidnapping of a federal official as well as assault on the immediate member of a federal official. nancy pelosi was not home at the time, but instead in washington, d.c., prosecutors say to pat, even during the trial showed no remorse that he was actually bragging about what he did. and even after

today, james and darya, his troubles are far from over because state prosecutors also want to try him for what he did. i can tell you he's 43 years old. and if he serves his full term in federal prison, he will be 83 years old before he is out of prison. much less. what happens to him in state court. so lots going on. we will let you know, once it begins at this particular time in less than 2 hours from now. >> back to you. all right. thank you. will. all right. now a multi vehicle crash killed at least one person this morning. chp says it happened a little after midnight on eastbound 5.80, near the grand avenue off-ramp. one of the cars overturned. police haven't released any details yet of the person who died. >> the cac hayward is looking for a driver who struck and killed a man whose body was found wednesday night as happened near 80 on the willing boulevard west of embers way after the victim was then they were taken to

the hospital. they ended up dying. it was a hit and run. the other vehicle took off in the vehicle, took off and police didn't give us a description of the vehicle. turning now to another big story this morning, pro palestinian demonstrators may now be facing a number of new charges. and that's because they were arrested last night for occupying a vacant building. >> that uc berkeley owns kron four's dan thorn has the story. pro-palestinian protesters facing off with a large number of police outside of the and ahead building near uc berkeley. >> officers had just cleared out another group of protesters who are occupying the abandoned space thursday night. at least a dozen of those people were taken away in handcuffs. they're now possibly facing charges of vandalism, trespassing and destruction of property. just a day earlier, police had called the takeover of the vacant building a crime scene. beyond the police barriers,

people chanted to free palestine, a recent graduate of uc berkeley says he's all for the protests but was not fully on board with this occupation. i mixed opinions about this, but i'm proposing, you know, i think they're doing a good, good work here, michael. the investments mission they have going at one point, protesters did get close with officers trying to move the perimeter back, but it did not escalate from there. >> that was dan thorn reporting and >> this is several blocks away from sproul hall, which is on the cal campus. and that's where protesters have been encamped. >> for 3 weeks, they were cleared out and the police say and brookly for say these 2 groups, they do not believe they are associated in any way. >> in the north bay sonoma state, students and faculty, you're sorting things out now after the university's president made a deal with protesters without checking first with his bosses. it's been well. he's been placed on administrative leave, but the chancellor of the csu system

says that president mike lee's agreement was made without the appropriate approvals. that agreement included an academic boycott of israeli universities. some students that we spoke with there up on the campus support the president's agreement. they think his punishment is unfair. >> i support the president and i think 3 months against genocide, kind of crazy. how a statement about lake ending genocide is like. crazy, crazy thing that has put someone on leave. >> student activists groups say the agreement late out in a three-page letter was a win for them. but it's clearly controversial. some view it as anti-semitic. >> the nature of the program being in southwest asia, north african studies was made without consulting with subject matter. experts in the middle east of whom i consider myself. one of them is a really good job up until now as president. i think that he did not handle this this situation. well, but i personally would hope you'd be given another chance.

>> now it's unclear exactly how long president lee will be on leave. the graduation ceremony is set for tomorrow. >> it's 807. and the university of california is now responding to workers for uc who vote voted to strike the union representing the workers say they approve this strike because they believe that the university's mishandled some of the demonstrations that we're on campuses, including this one at ucla and melissa mattel, the associate vice president of systemwide labor relations for the university of california is responding now to the strike, calling it illegal, saying, quote, uaw decision to strike over non labor issues violates to do strike laws of their contracts that you see and sets a dangerous and far-reaching precedent that social political and cultural issues no matter how valid that are, not labor related can support a labor strike. >> it's 808, and oakland's mayor is talking with kron 4

about how the city she says is continuing to make progress fighting crime. yep. she also gave us an update on how they are dealing with the homelessness situation. crop orders. catherine heenan reports. >> people are accepting housing. the mayor talked about the fact that in the latest count, homelessness grew by 9% in oakland. those numbers released just this week, but at least the rate is slowing down. 9% does not sound as drastic. when you consider the city's homeless population grew. 47% from 2017 to 2019. and 24% between 2019 and and so this 9% increase is actually a significant success shows that we are, you know, closing some of these >> homelessness issues. of course, there's still so much to be done. i we can walk out the street still see encampments. and so that's our job is never done until everyone is brought inside in

our streets. a in clear of encampments. >> she says oakland is working on making modular housing permanent and that federal housing help is coming in forms that are easier to when i advocate at the federal level for a voucher ys, we're advocating for playspace voucher so that it's easier for people to redo bc the section 8 vouchers that they don't have to go find it. >> a land where that would take it that it's attached to housing units. as for the improved crime numbers recently released one number not being celebrated is the fact that residential robbery is up 110%. >> that translates to 42 home robberies so far this year compared to 20 in the same period last year. >> you know, i know that it's like it's it sounds scary. when you say 110% increase. but mind you, you know, you come from already a very small amount of numbers for you today. and and, you know, and the you know, tick in certain

checking out the weather moving in just like the fog. yeah. haha. >> well, we hope the moved out that fast to. because it's friday. it what this flowers on having fill in at extra tight. see it's a good friday to maybe get out there and switch it up a little bit. we are looking today at a day that is going to be bringing a lot of cloud cover overhead. but you can see right there that peek of sunshine. so from cloudy to sunny later on today, we are going to be seeing conditions today that do clear out really nicely in pretty familiar at this point. this holding pattern of weather is staying put. nothing is moving anywhere. that jet stream is still to our north. we still do have the low to our east and the high to our west. so your forecast does not bring a whole lot of change to it. now, fog at the coastline will get stay persistent today. sunshine elsewhere, though, another push of fog into the

bay tonight into tomorrow morning. and that is going to cool us off yet again tomorrow and daytime highs all through the weekend, really staying in the 70's for most of the bay. of course, those 50's and 60's aren't going anywhere near the coastline. but those of us along the bay shore and for the south bay in particular will notice just a touch of a cooler day today for the south bay san jose barely down into the upper 70's after your past few days of 80's. so little bit of relief from that warmer temperature. oakland, up to richmond in the upper 60's today and only 2 spots, antioch in vacaville back in the low 80's, a santa rosa at 76 degrees. let's get your lookahead temperatures tomorrow sunday, monday, it's that holding pattern of upper 70's inland and low 70's along the bay shore. some great mornings and some sunny afternoons rain. all right, john, thank you that. well, if you are traveling hitting the roads out there, we've been keeping a close eye on your morning commute. this is a 8.80, all right at 66 avenue. as you're traveling to oakland this morning, you can see the northbound side, a little

37 highway one. 21 interchange right there near sears point. this closure starts tonight at 10:00pm. they should be done with that at 05:00am monday morning as they continue paving. >> well, saint andrew missionary baptist church is asking their community for help. that church is a designated landmark in oakland that's been helping the community there ever since the 19. 0, 6, earthquake. well, a church in west oakland is asking for donations now after a fire damaged some of that historic building for more information on how you can support just head over to our website at kron 4 dot com. 8.17, the time and new area code is coming to northern california to help out the 5, 3, oh area code. it's one of the largest area codes in the state. it stretches from the northern edge of the bay area all the way up to the oregon border. the public utilities commission made the announcement yesterday that starting in january of next year, new numbers will receive this new 8, 3, 7 area code.

and that decision that comes after we've had a pretty big demand for new phone numbers up in that area. it's 18 right now and there's a website that's helping people. if you think your information was part of a data breach. yeah. we've got to rich demuro in today's tech smart walking us through how it works. >> another day, another data breach. here's a letter att recently sent to customers saying their information was released on the dark web. so when we say things like it in saying you cannot be removed from the 19 breach because tens of thousands of people have it now because it's published only that easily downloadable planning. troy hunt runs a website called have i been it's a way to check if your personal information and passwords have been exposed. as of tonight is 767,000 bridges in including leaks from facebook. adobe, linkedin, dropbox and more. problem is when your password is exposed in a breach,

hackers try to use it to log into other websites sort of might. it's time really, really volumes and suddenly because used to pass cross someone's now into social media council, whatever else it might freezes pensions, which is why it's so important to use a password manager to create strong, unique passwords for every site. so you never get to remember 100 plus pass puts so that you make so much. but that going up. i like my dog and i went to university and this year so they fall is not possible use everyone. there is a password alternative called pass keys where your phone approves loggins. but this can be confusing, especially sinking across various devices. and we're trying sort of dragged people from something very familiar, nice views through to something that's much more secure china hunt believes it's just a matter of time before the next breach i think we're judging companies look by the that a data breach and more about have handled it. and if your information is already out there, there's not

and tennis players in san francisco could soon have to pay $5 to reserve some courts in the city. park. officials voted wednesday night to require this fee. when people make an online reservation at 28 of the 55 courts available, you can find a full list of the courts on our website at kron 4 dot com. but this fee plan will go now to the city's board of supervisors for a final vote and approval. and we'll see if it clears that threshold to. >> deaths from drug overdoses in the u.s. are down for the first time in 5 years. the cdc reports preliminary data shows 107,000 people died of overdoses in 2023, which is a 3% decrease from the year before. the final numbers may vary a bit. but they think there's going to be decline regardless now used to be that prescription painkillers were the driving force of overdose deaths. then it turned to heroin. and nowadays it's fentanyl. a 26. and coming up

neighbor haven't been seen for several days. there was a conflict. something was boiling there and it. >> when you know a boiled over cops got the call requesting to check on the elderly woman yesterday evening. they were met at the door by the woman's 57 year-old son when additional officers arrived. he tried to stop them from. >> checking the residence to check the welfare of that's when the altercation ensued to try to move to physically block them from getting to doorway. officers conducted sweep of residents founder deceiving. >> she was a very nice lady. rhea vista. police ended up arresting the sun on suspicion of homicide. he's identified as jeffrey 8. nick seen here on the megan's law website. he is a convicted offender. in my experience as a veteran law enforcement officer. >> normal people do not kill their mothers. it's a very mitch. violent crime. it's

something works out. are there's a good result? you know, either either way and have something have to be to growing niche. attics kron, 4 news. >> 33 is the time in the east bay. one person has died after a triple shooting enrichment. it happened on may. 11th along pullman avenue, writer carlson boulevard. that's where richmond police found 3 people had been shot. one of them died at the scene. no word on the condition of the other victims. but police are looking for those suspects this morning. >> a 31 year-old later man accused of assaulting his girlfriend last month and san leandro. take a look at the map of where this happened. it was april 19th haas avenue in san leandro. the woman called the police. the police found her. she had injuries to her face and she told them that he hit her. the boyfriend against her will and also sexually assaulted her. he was arrested in fremont and he the police say has confessed during interview to what he did now. he faces the charges. >> well, police have

identified the hit and run victim of a suspected drunk driver in fremont earlier this month. investigators say the man who died was 26 year-old to de la fee. new of oakland. he was hit and killed on may 3rd on fremont boulevard. the driver who hit him ended up crashing into a traffic pole and was arrested for dui. the victim's family put together a gofundme campaign to cover funeral costs. he leaves behind his pregnant wife and 3 children. this is fremont's first traffic fatality of the year. time now is a 34. >> and now we know the identity of the man who was killed while he was riding an e-bike in hayward. it's 22 year-old say rahm gala, poly and he's from hayward news riding an e-bike on may 8th near mission boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle taken to the hospital, ended up dying 2 days later, he was a graduate student from india pursuing his master's degree in computer science cal state east bay. and this marks the 4th fatal collision in hayward this year. people used to

working out the hotel are going to be rallying today because they want their money. >> take a look at what's going and this is what's going with a rally at 1 o'clock at the radisson hotel. >> the hotel found to commit wage fraud against 120 workers down $400,000. total. this is from the oakland department of workplace employment standards. they ordered the hotel to pay. but the employees say they haven't yet seen a dime. so they plan to rally at the radisson hotel, oakland airport at 1 o'clock today. >> well, at least one san francisco city supervisor is pushing back on those plans to bring giant pandas to san francisco this week. supervisors discussed paying for the care and transportation of these animals. mayor london breed called for this group to pass a resolution that would allow various city departments to raise the money from private entities. but supervisor ahsha safai it. who is running for mayor argues that money would be better spent funding programs for the youth and unhoused.

>> so this is about prioritizing our future. this is about prioritizing our children over pandas. and if we can rally to fund a home for pandas, we certainly can rally to raise money for essential programs that impact every single corner of this city. >> panda fundraising efforts wouldn't begin until at least mid-june at the earliest there's still no timeline on when those pandas would arrive in san francisco. >> it's 36 and now is the time for state lawmakers to look at all the legislation that has been floating around to decide what's going to move on and what's going to die and they pay. they made some tough decisions already. capitol correspondent eytan wallace gives us a look. well, just take a look at all of these pages featuring a list of bill after bill after bill that got taken up. as you can imagine, lawmakers whose bills made it through say they're relieved while others, his bills faced a different outcome, say. >> they're disappointed.

>> environmental advocates making their voices heard outside the state capitol urging support for a package of bills they believe will help california phase out fossil fuels. all of it taking place on what's known as suspense day on this day, the assembly and senate appropriations committees considered 1009 bills that could have fiscal impacts on the state. specifically their piece of legislation that would require the state to spend at least $50,000 from the general fund or $150,000 from another special fund. all the more significant this year as the state faces with the governor believes is a 27.0. 6 billion dollar deficit do pass among the bills that advanced ab 27 16 by some one member isaac bryant. the proposal would impose a $10,000 daily fine against oil wells if they're near communities and producing less than 15 barrels per day. but i talked to the oil industry, don't often do about the stripper wells. they told me the environmental

impact is the same furlough producing wells and high producing wells. >> so why are we allowing these low producing wells to even exist? another proposal of his to enshrine into the california constitution, the right to clean air and water. also advanced on the republican side, a bill by bakersfield senator shannon grove to classify the solicitation of a child for is a felony. >> made it through as well. and while more than 60% of bills did make it through, many did not among the killed bills. one that would have created a medicare for all types system in california. another that would have required an employer to provide employees with the right to disconnect after work and one that would have limited fixed utility bill charges to reparations bills by senator steven bradford calling for housing in property tax assistance for descendants of black enslaved americans also failed. always your reaction. i disappointment, property ownership. that's how we build generational wealth in this country african-americans have been denied.
