months ago before october 28th nobody ever heard of david de pap. but that change in the overnight hours when he went into the pelosi's home in san francisco, looking for nancy pelosi, she was not home. paul pelosi was home. that's when he confronted paul pelosi, paul pelosi, discreetly managed even though he was facing david happy managed to discreetly called the san francisco police department they arrived at the scene wednesday. got to the door. they saw the past and pelosi. they also saw a dip app with a hammer in his hand, told him to drop it. and that was when to pat hit paul pelosi 3 times on his head fracturing his skull. in fact, paul pelosi woke up in a pool of his own blood, still recovering from his injuries. he was convicted of that and he faces up to 50 years. prosecutors are asking

40 years believing he has shown no remorse during the trial and in fact, that he was bragging about it and this troubles are far from over because after this, he also will be tried in state courts because state prosecutors also want to go after him. and then after that, let's just play this all out. they probably won't do it because by the time he gets out of federal prison he gets 40 years, he'll be 83 years old. immigration officials have already talked about deporting him because he was in the united states illegally. is a canadian resident who came into the united states in 2008 on a six-month visa. and of course overstated. so he never should have been in the u.s. in the first place to attack pelosi. we'll let you know what happens in court during our 10 o'clock newscast. how many years will spend in federal prison? >> back all right. thanks a lot. we'll 904, is the time a

multi-vehicle crash killed at least one person this morning. chp says it happened a little after midnight on eastbound 5.80, right near grand avenue. the off-ramp there, one of the cars overturned. police haven't released any details about the person who died. >> the looking for a driver who hit and killed a man. the man's body was found wednesday night near 80 on lewelling boulevard west of embers way whoever hit him took off. they have not come up with a suspect description or car at this point. >> okay. turning to another big story that we're following. those pro palestinian demonstrators may now be facing new charges are happening as we know on cal campuses in these demonstrators were arrested last night because they broke into a vacant building. the euro cal kron four's dan thorn explains. pro-palestinian protesters facing off with a large number of police outside of the and ahead building near uc berkeley.

>> officers had just cleared out another group of protesters who are occupying the abandoned space thursday night. at least a dozen of those people were taken away in handcuffs. they're now possibly facing charges of vandalism, trespassing and destruction of property. just a day earlier, police had called the takeover of the vacant building a crime beyond the police barriers, people chanted to free palestine, a recent graduate of uc berkeley says he's all for the protests but was not fully on board with this occupation. i mixed opinions about this, but i'm proposing, you know, i think they're doing a good, good work here, michael. the investments mission they have going at one point, protesters did get close with officers trying to move the perimeter back, but it did not escalate from there. that was dan thorn reporting. >> and this is several blocks away from what was going at sproul hall. don't think they're connected now. they don't. that's where protesters

set up in chemistry weeks ago. more on that to come in a little bit. meanwhile, up in the north bay, following a few days of controversy, sonoma state university president mike lee has decided to retire. >> this comes after csu administrators put him on administrative leave for insubordination after made a deal with protesters without checking with his bosses. so the chancellor, the csu system, says the president mike lee's agreement was made without the appropriate approvals. that agreement included an academic boycott. israeli universities. now we spoke with some students there on campus who support the former president's agreement. they think his punishment was unfair. >> i support the president and i 3 months against genocide, kind of crazy. how a statement about lake ending genocide is like. crazy, crazy thing that has put someone on leave. >> well, student activist groups said the agreement late out in a three-page letter was a win for them. but it was

clearly controversial. there were others on campus who viewed portions of it as anti-semitic. >> the nature of the program being in southwest asia, north african studies was made without consulting with subject matter. experts in the middle east of whom i consider myself. one of them is done a really good job up until now as president. i think that he did not handle this this situation. well, but i personally would hope you'd be given another chance. >> as we know this morning, he has decided to retire. csu appointed. nathan evans as the acting president of sonoma state. their graduation is scheduled for tomorrow. >> and the university of california is also responding to its workers who voted to authorize a strike because they were upset about the way that the cow campuses have been handling demonstrations, especially this one that happened at ucla, melissa mattel, the associate vice president of systemwide labor relations for the university of california says that this is illegal. she says, quote, uaw is decision to strike over non labor issues.

>> violates the no strike clause of their contractors. you see and says the dangerous and far-reaching precedent that social political and cultural issues no matter how valid that are not labor related can support a labor strike. >> it is 908, right now. and the mayor of oakland is talking about how she says the city is making progress in fighting crime. yes, in fact, she said that they're also making some headway to when it comes to tackling homelessness with kron four's. catherine heenan with that. >> people are accepting housing. the mayor talked about the fact that in the latest count, homelessness grew by 9% in oakland. those numbers released just this week, but at least the rate is slowing down. 9% does not sound as drastic. when you consider the city's homeless population grew. 47% from 2017 to 2019. and 24% between 2019 and and so this 9% increase is

actually a significant success shows that we are, you know, closing some of these >> homelessness issues. of course, there's still so much to be done. i we can walk out the street still see encampments. and so that's our job is never done until everyone is brought inside in our streets. a in clear of encampments. >> she says oakland is working on making modular housing permanent and that federal housing help is coming in forms that are easier to when i advocate at the federal level for a voucher ys, we're advocating for playspace voucher so that it's easier for people to redo bc the section 8 vouchers that they don't have to go and find it. >> a land where that would take it that it's attached to housing units. as for the improved crime numbers recently released one number not being celebrated is the fact that residential robbery is up 110%. >> that translates to 42 home robberies so far this year

see how the weather is going to be this weekend. we've got a good kind of like what we're seeing behind us and what we see past couple days, john. yeah, definitely going to be a consistent weekend for us. i know rain is tracking a hot spot out there. but nothing too in this forecast. we are looking at steady, smooth, sailing weather the next several days. transamerica building sitting under what is still a blanket of cloud cover. but i see some peaks of blue out there that cloud cover has been a bit higher aloft this morning and it's burning off fairly quickly. so we had less visibility issues and now we're seeing sunshine even sooner. high pressure is actually even more distant from us. so there's really no sinking stagnant air. that's been nice for air quality. the bad thing, though, that fog has been pushing it along with some cool ocean air and that means that wind stirring up some pollen. so allergies will continue to be an issue over the weekend. sunshine this afternoon. and 70's will entice you to get outside allergies or not. tomorrow morning, another morning of the fog before it burns off into the middle of the morning. and we see some more

sunshine tomorrow afternoon. daytime highs remain in the 50's to 60's in sf 4 bay to breakers on sunday. expect a very similar conditions and a very pleasant jogging forecast for you getting out there. daytime highs elsewhere, 60's to 70's saying carlos, up to 73 today, south bay temperatures rising into the upper 70's know low 80's in the south bay today, although we do have a couple of them barely hanging on in antioch, in vacaville oakland, up to richmond, you'll be in the upper 60's. same for you. and allay today. tomorrow, all the way through monday. temperatures remaining steady, very little change going on here tuesday. a little bit of a warm-up. but by just a couple of degrees enough to get a few of our inland spots back to the 80's right now. all right, john, thank you for that little crack in accident along southbound 6.80. >> north of your own mom, a creek. so you can see little slowing there as you're traveling along 6.80. 24, though, not impacted the night before. we're not seeing any major issues there. so again,

southbound 6.80, north of geary wrote other highways and bridges to look good. 10 minutes into the city. no major delays there. mateo bridge just short of 14, 80 to 101. if your traveling along of the south bay. 33 minutes 2.80, looks good along with 2.37. and san leandro down to milpitas. you start to slow down just as you're heading for ema. soon as you get past that little the congestion, pat, you make a good time. alright, back to you. thanks. a lot and also you should know if you're driving around highway. 37 is going to be closed. >> this weekend, you can use it today. but by tonight between sonoma solano counties, you can't go that way because they're still working on a repaving project. so they're going to have detour starting now. this from highway 37 highway one. 21 at the interchange near sears point starting at 10:00pm tonight and then it will run until 05:00am monday morning. saint andrew missionary baptist church needs your help to rebuild from this fire.

saying their information was released on the dark web. so when we say things like it saying you cannot be removed from the 18 t data breach because tens of thousands of people have it now because it's published only is that easily downloadable planning. troy hunt runs a website called have i been it's a way to check if your personal information and passwords have been exposed. as of tonight is 767 data breaches in including leaks from facebook. adobe, linkedin, dropbox and more. problem is when your password is exposed in a breach, hackers try to use it to log into other websites mask order might add. it's time really, really volumes and suddenly because used to pass cross someone's now into social media council, whatever else it might we've few freeze as pensions, which is why it's so important to use a password manager to create strong, unique passwords for every site. so you never get to

posed as contract workers and overcharged elderly residents for unfinished or in some cases unnecessary work altogether. police say the suspects used at least 2 different names for their company. at one point, they went by statewide roofing and siding and then they went by roofing and masonry. the first reported scam was in november of last year. the most recent back on may 8th, all 3 men now been booked into san mateo county jail. >> for your health this morning, california has a new mental health website where you can connect with crisis services, counseling treatment, and real-time support. it's mental health dot ca dot gov. and it's a one-stop shop for anybody who needs mental and behavioral health resources from children. 2 older adults, and they also have information there about proposition one, which is going to increase the number of mental health and addiction treatment facilities in the state. deaths from drug overdoses in the country are down now for the first time in

5 years, according to the cdc data shows about 107,000 people died of overdoses in 2023, which is 3% less, died in 2022. so they say that the numbers are going in the right direction. prescription pain meds were once the driving force of drug overdose deaths in the u.s.. then it was heroin. and now it's fentanyl. its 9.25. coming up next on the kron. 4 morning a woman is found dead in her home in the north bay. we're going to tell you why police think >> that her son did it.

>> there was tension between the mom and the son. he was living here for 2 months. he was emotionally. stable, worried neighbors on birch ridge drive in the trilogy. retirement community called rio vista. police said senior in a while. >> after their 78 year-old neighbor haven't been seen for several days. there was a conflict. something was boiling there and it. >> when you know a boiled over cops got the call requesting to check on the elderly woman yesterday evening. they were met at the door by the woman's 57 year-old son when additional officers arrived. he tried to stop them from. >> checking the residence to check the welfare of that's when the altercation ensued. they try to move to physically block them from getting to doorway. officers conducted this sweep of residents founder deceiving.

>> she was a very nice lady, rhea vista. police ended up arresting the sun on suspicion of homicide. he's identified as jeffrey 8. nick seen here on the megan's law website. he is a convicted offender. in my experience as a veteran law enforcement officer. >> normal people do not kill their mothers. it's a very mitch. violent crime. it's it's one of the, you know, so one of the worst murders you can do the killing of of a parent or child. there are many unanswered questions as to why and how this happened. but chief john maser says the investigation is active and under way. >> he commended the victims, neighbors for getting involved and contacting them. this came to light because we had some concern. neighbors. >> those neighbors called us to investigate and had they not done that, this could have potentially gone completely undetected. things may have

april 19th and haas avenue in san leandro when police got there, the victim had injuries to her face and she told the police that her boyfriend held her against her will and sexually assaulted her. he was arrested wednesday by undercover detectives in fremont and they say that he confessed during an interview. now he faces charges. >> man who was hit and killed by suspected driver and fremont earlier this month has now been identified. police identified him as 26 year-old tony la fyi now of oakland. he was hit and killed on may. 3rd was on fremont boulevard. the driver who hit him crashed into a traffic pole and was arrested for suspected dui. his family has put together a gofundme campaign to cover the funeral costs. the victim leaves behind his pregnant wife and 3 children. this is fremont's first traffic fatality of the year. >> its 9.34 and now we the man who was killed riding a bike in hayward. it was 22 year-old

say rahm gala, poly and he was living in hayward is riding an e-bike on may 8th near mission boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle and he was taken to the hospital. he ended up dying there 2 days later, gallop ali was a graduate student from india and he was pursuing his master's degree in computer science at cal state east bay. he is the 4th person to die in a fatal collision in hayward this year. people who work for an oakland hotel are rallying today to get their money. that's what they last october, radisson hotel was found to have committed wage theft against 120 workers withholding $400,000 and the old in department of workplace and employment standards ordered the hotel to compensate the employees, but they say they have not yet seen a dime. that rallies going to be at the radisson hotel. the oakland airport, one on any sav, a new at 1 o'clock this afternoon.

>> well, at least one san francisco city supervisor is pushing back on the plans to bring giant pandas to san francisco this week. supervisors discussed paying for the care and transportation of those animals. mayor london breed previously asked the group to pass a resolution that would allow various city departments to start raising money from private entities. but supervisor also ash a stuff it who is running for mayor argues that money would be better spent funding programs for the youth and the unhoused. >> so this is about prioritizing our future. this is about prioritizing our children over pandas. and if we can rally to fund a home for pandas, we certainly can rally to raise money for essential programs that impact every single corner of this city. >> we'll pan to fund raising efforts. probably wouldn't begin until at least mid-june at the earliest. there's still no timeline on when these pandas would come to san francisco. >> time 9.36 and state lawmakers are now trying whittle down the legislation. they want to move on and what

they are going to give up on they made a number of decisions already. capitol correspondent eytan wallace has the story. >> well, just take a look at all of these pages featuring a list of bill after bill after bill that got taken up. as you can imagine, lawmakers whose bills made it through say they're relieved while others, his bills faced a different outcome, say they're disappointed. >> environmental advocates making their voices heard outside the state capitol urging support for a package of bills they believe will help california phase out fossil fuels. all of it taking place on what's known as suspense day on this day, the assembly and senate appropriations committees considered 1009 bills that could have fiscal impacts on the state. specifically their piece of legislation that would require the state to spend at least $50,000 from the general fund or $150,000 from another special fund. all

the more significant this year as the state faces with the governor believes is a 27.0. 6 billion dollar deficit do pass among the bills that advanced ab 27 16 by some one member isaac bryant. the proposal would impose a $10,000 daily fine against oil wells if they're near communities and producing less than 15 barrels per day. but i talked to the oil industry, don't often do about the stripper wells. they told me the environmental impact is the same furlough producing wells and high producing wells. >> so why are we allowing these low producing wells to even exist? another proposal of his to enshrine into the california constitution, the right to clean air and water. also advanced on the republican side, a bill by bakersfield senator shannon grove to classify the solicitation of a child for is a felony. >> made it through as well. and while more than 60% of bills did make it through, many did not among the killed bills. one that would have created a medicare for all types system in california.

>> they started to work on this equipment, kind of getting everything fired back up and the processing units they want to -akensure they're in good shape. and they say flares could be part of this. they say that it's a way for the system to safely manage access, combustible gases while burning them off efficiently and effectively. they are hoping to minimize or prevent any flaring during the process. but you should know it is possible more than 70 million dollars. they say has also gone into upgrading their equipment. has more electric vehicles are driving throughout california. less gas tax revenue is coming in and that means there's less money for road repair. so what's the state do now to try to make up the difference? well, one of the things they're doing is they're doing a study. so they're recruiting 800 drivers to participate in this and see if it will work at 6 months long. and if you agree to do this, you're required to pay road charges every month based on the number of miles they drive the state then plans to pay each driver about $400 in gift cards for participating. and also you will get a gas tax
