breaking news. >> the story that we're covering right now on major roadways closed in fremont because of a deadly crash. kron four's michael thomas the following the details of what happened joins us now live from the scene. michael. >> really an awful car accident to say the least. and while police have not confirmed it has a fatality as of yet. family members here on the scene tell us their son was involved and did pass away. take a look. you can see just how awful this scene is and it's on fremont boulevard between thorton avenue and for all to boulevard right in front of bookies pet supply. you can see the car completely burned and wrapped around a tree with the engine completely fallen out at the bottom there. and the debris from this crash is spread out across the roadway. as far as about 100 feet away. the speed limit in this area is 30 miles an hour and that speed limit sign was knocked down during the crash. police have not given any details on what may have happened or how many people were involved or confirmed. it has a fatality.

as of now fremont boulevard remains closed from thorton to peralta with multiple units on the scene along with the mourning family. you can see just all that debris across in front of the winner stencil and part of that tree completely burned out as well when it comes to that pet supply store. while that window is completely bursts it out, this car was engulfed in flames early this morning. and that is all the information that we have as of right now. so as we get more details from fremont police, we'll continue to keep you updated. that's the very latest in fremont. i'm michael thomas. i will send it back to to live in this. and i i know it's so difficult, michael, that you're actually out there and you were over there with the family. i don't know. are they still at the scene or or have they left? >> yet the family is still here at the and it is a mourning father. and, you know, a couple of other family members. they haven't given too many details, other, you know, than showing a lot of emotion in saying that their son was involved in the accident and their son did

starting to see congestion. they are busy. 20 minute ride into the city right now. there are no accidents. definitely see more congestion. 30 minutes long. the san mateo bridge are richmond center fell bridge about 14 golden gate bridge because it's low in on of the north bay, 40 minute ride. 37 down to the tolls and taking a snapshot of our highways. you can see over the east bay along a highway for 5.88 e the congestion. there either. give yourself a little extra time or just wait till the traffic starts to die out. all right. james, back to you. thanks a lot at 802. we want to go to another developing story. this is in the south bay where we're learning new details of >> but a shooting that involved a police in san jose officers say they opened fire on a man with a gun kron. four's. jack moment explains what happened. >> well, the shooting here that happened sunday in the seaside san jose apartment complex is the 3rd officer-involved shooting to happen so far this year having city leaders want to look further into these officer-involved shootings when they do happen. it also

has residents here at this apartment complex, a concern. >> it all started with a 9-1-1 call people living at this east side. san jose complex reporting a man shooting a gun outside his van. he was later identified as 41 year-old ricardo view, every out and by the time police arrived shortly after 4 in the afternoon. >> this prompted a separate officer to discharge his firearm striking the suspect man was critically injured. one neighbor showed us this parking garage where she says police marks the bullet holes and additional details are still unfolding. but one thing's certain people here are on was scared. it was care. mendoza moved here just this year and says his family was watching tv when fort and where we hear one shot. >> and simon, later, we're late. >> 6 saying he heard what happened from a neighbor. she was in the on the guy is what you know? and the weather couple shows in as a view, every al has served 10 years before for assault on a police

officer. the gun he had sunday. >> was unregistered frequency of san jose police officers being shot at or hit by gunfire. he's gone from a rare anomaly to a regular occurrence. san jose police say the threat to officers is increasing and they want to form a group to study each time an officer was shot at in the coming days. i will bring together a group of internal and external partners for the purpose of analyzing these attacks. now, san jose police says that the shooting is still very much under investigation. questions as to why the shooting happened in the first place or why neighbors called saying that there was a man shooting out of his van. those are still yet to be determined. meantime, the every hour remains in the hospital in critical condition where he said san jose jack moment. >> kron 4 news. >> san jose is installing 33 new cameras to catch speeders. they're going to be posted by late 2025. right now the city is trying to figure out where they should go. they want to reduce high speed crashes. so city council spending his time

looking at the placement and they're going vote on that this fall. they say the goal is to spread the cameras around to make sure that specifically communities of color and low-income neighborhoods. also get the cameras because they think they'll provide safety. now for the first 60 days, the program drivers. let's get a warning that after that, they're going to be fines and they will have an excess an exception for low-income drivers. instead of the fine, they'll be asked to provide community service hours. city leaders say that law enforcement will not have access to the camera footage to solve any crimes. the cameras are only going to be used to enforce speed limits. in the east bay. police have arrested a 13 year-old boy for stabbing and killing an 18 year-old at a safeway in san leandro. this stabbing happened at a safeway on bancroft avenue in early april and the security cameras show the 2 teenagers getting into a fight before the 13 year-old stabbed the victim in the chest and the arm. the a young

person, the 13 year-old he was arrested at his high school last week. >> well, happening today, san francisco city officials and nurses out of tucker berg, san francisco general hospital plan to announce new legislation that they hope will address a nursing shortage. so the ballot measure would specifically address a shortage of nurses and 9-1-1, operators in the city. they say the legislation would improve the retention and recruitment of essential workers and it would let full-time registered nurses buyback time as per diem nurses for retirement credits. it would also give 9-1-1 operators, same safety retirement benefits as other first responders, if approved, this measure would be on the november ballot. a press conference to announce more about this legislation is scheduled for 10 o'clock this morning. just outside the bank of america plaza on potrero avenue. it's 807. and today, more than 200 rideshare and delivery drivers for lyft. uber doordash. >> are going to rally outside the california supreme court

in san francisco. this is while the high court is considering a legal challenge to prop 22, that's the law that says that drivers for these types of companies are independent contractors and therefore not entitled to benefits after the law passed, a lower court ruled that it was unconstitutional. but that ruling was later reversed. now the seiu appealed the decision and it is in the hands of the state's high court. the workers do not support this measure because they say it denies them the ability to make a living wage and denies them basic rights like sick leave and overtime pay, which they say other california house are afford it. that rally is at 12, 30 outside the court. san francisco. >> well, 2 robbery suspects were arrested last night after police say they stole money and a car in the city. but the suspect ran into something they didn't expect as they were trying to get away. this all began as a robbery in the

soma overnight at about 8 and fulton street folsom street where police say they found the suspects in the stolen car. but when it tried to pull him over a chase ensued, but it eventually ended en the suspects crashed into a driverless car that full summit 14th right near costco. nobody in the driverless car to be hurt. but both suspects were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. well, a man in san ramon has been arrested now in connection with a freeway shooting. here's a bullet hole in one of the cars that was hit. police say they arrested lead o'connor of forest hill after identifying him as the shooter in this incident. that happened on 6.80, just north of acosta boulevard. it was during the arrest. the police say they also found a gun in o'connor's car. nobody thankfully was hurt in that freeway shooting. a developing story that we're following. legal experts are now weighing in on the re-sentencing. >> of david de pap pap was convicted of hitting paul pelosi in the head with a hammer at pelosi's home in san

francisco. initially last week he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. but then the federal judge realized that she had failed to give the path the opportunity to speak during the sentencing, which she needs to do. so she's correcting that. and experts say that this is very important in the case. >> it takes consideration whether the defendant, the accused now the convicted in this case, the pop is sorry for what he did. >> kron 4 legal expert michael cardoza goes on to say that paps lawyers could try to continue appealing this case despite the judge correcting the mistake that re-sentencing hearing is set for next tuesday. >> well, officials from the port of oakland say they are seeing a lot more activity now in the last 6 months. in fact, they say they've seen a 70% increase in container imports this year compared to last year. the port also posted an increase in exports by nearly 7%. officials say recent infrastructure upgrades have given the port a big boost now

and walmart are competing now for shoppers who are looking to save after inflation is pushed up the price of food and household goods and other items. target officials say the retail store has already cut the prices of about 1500 items heading into the memorial day holiday weekend. i just want to tell you, i almost don't want to tell you this secret my cbs is in target and i'm hooked. i before i wasn't a target get up. now it's the best cvs. >> i want to tell you because i don't want you to go. there is a all right. it's 17 right now. home depot is using ai and it's self checkout to constantly watch customers as a way to stop shoplifting cameras are monitored by ai-powered computers to identify complex baskets at the checkouts and then staff are alerted by the computer to make sure that all of the products are scanned. according to reports, home depot has not publicly announced the use of these

cameras or put any signs warning customers about it. but the retailer originally bought the system and brought the system too. the staff shells saying that they weren't it and then the stock was damaged in that kind of things. they started using it there and then they branched out and they started using it to target theft. happening today, alameda county district attorney pamela price goes to announce a major lawsuit against home insurance companies. she's going to be making this announcement today at 11 o'clock this morning in oakland. she is filing a lawsuit on behalf of homeowners in alameda county. but that's all we know at this point. stay tuned. >> well, business is in berkeley will need to decide if they want to keep those parklets that they've got and pay for yeah. the city of berkeley now plans to charge rent for those spaces really came after covid tissue and it was huge. it's big for business and was free then not for more. crop was rob nesbitt explains. >> the city of berkeley has

provided an example for how much it will cost to business to keep a parklet using the costs of how much it is to park in a parking space. for example, 2 parking spaces with an hourly rate of the $1.50. will cost around $8100 a year for a parklet businesses and restaurants in berkeley. we're left with tough decisions during the pandemic. >> many of them converted outdoor parking spaces into parklets, including solves restaurant and delicatessen during covid the park. that was a lifeline that enabled us stay in business and continue operating. >> i'm now it's become just a wonderful feature. co-owner sam told us explain to me how saws has to outdoor dining options. >> street spaces that were turned into a public park years before covid and parking spaces that were turned into outdoor dining back in 2020. the city is now requiring businesses to apply for permits to add or keep their parklets having an outdoor dining space has been free for the last 4 years. but starting monday, they will come at a yearly cost, going to be a big expense. that was going to be

right now and a new bill aims to change how health care providers in california reported domestic abuse to the police. right now. >> health care providers face misdemeanor charges. if they do not report suspected abuse to the police, even if the patient does not want them to. if this bill passes, health care providers would only have to report violence that requires lifesaving treatment

in other suspected cases of abuse. they would only have to refer patients. 2 victim advocates services, supporters of this say that victims fear if the police are called their children, that be taken away or in the case of undocumented immigrants, their families would be at risk of deportation. the bill has passed the state assembly and now it's on its way to the senate. >> well, a 25 is the time and another fire in san francisco. this one at martin's cleaner at polk and broadway in russian hill. see all the response there. firefighters say one of the machines inside apparently caught fire about 3 o'clock or so yesterday took about an hour to put it out. nobody was hurt. so that at least some good news. and here's another bit of good news. the search for a hiker in alameda county has ended happily, according to the east bay regional park police. they found alex stretcher and his dog near the san antonio, san antonio reserve yesterday

friends when he was shot and killed an that several people were seen leaving the area in a dark car, but they have no suspects at this point. so they want your help. we now know the cause of death of a homeless man who was killed last week. he was found dead and they investigated and say it was blunt force trauma to the head and chest. here. you see a picture of the victim and flowers and memorials placed at the spot where desmond cole lost his life. investigators also found a large rock at the crime scene. but they're not sure if that was the murder weapon. we talked to some people who knew him. >> i ask i mean, you know, i mean, i think he had his issues. >> but the bait, you know, you never did wrong anybody that i know. you know, mean, it would talk out loud little bit, you know, but >> that was just him. at this point. investigators are still trying to piece together what happened. >> we'll chronicle is your local election headquarters in san francisco's mayoral

candidates are all set to gather tonight for their first debate. the harvey milk lgbtq democratic club is hosting a mayoral town hall at the first unitarian universalist church in center in cathedral hill. it's set to take place at 6.30, mayor london breed will be there along with supervisor aaron peskin supervisor ahsha safai. e former interim mayor mark farrell and nonprofit executive daniel lurie. they're all set to attend and we'll see what happens. meanwhile, the federal transit administration is investing billions now into san francisco's public transit system and building what you see on your screen. this is the portal. it's a project to connect caltrain and california's high-speed rail to the salesforce transit center in downtown san francisco. that rendering is what it might look like when it's done on monday, the federal transit administration announced it was investing 3.4 billion dollars to make that project a reality. former house speaker nancy pelosi says she's proud of how san francisco is pushing the boundaries of what public transportation can be.
