fire is burning near%bear island. not far from redwood shores in the hillary va should museum the bay area air quality management district has confirmed the smoke is coming from sims metal. that's a recycling facility. this is a live look. you can see all the smoke there. the fire started about 3.20, this afternoon. air district inspectors are investigating what caused it. it's not clear if there are any injuries. thanks for being with us tonight on kron. 4 news at 5, i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. that fire is sending off large plumes of smoke. as you saw there, there is no shelter-in-place order. >> but the air district is advising people nearby to avoid exposure by staying indoors with their windows and doors closed. our kron four's dan thorn is headed there right now. stick with us here on kron 4 for more updates now to another big story we're following this evening. a high school student has been sent to the hospital after he was stabbed by another student. this is in gilroy happened at

christopher high school and that is where we find kron four's lezla gooden with the latest. good evening. less la. >> good evening. that's right. we're here at christopher high school where the students went on a lockdown earlier this morning after 2 boys got into a physical fight in the locker we're told by officials that one of ways in that stabbing the that caused a lockdown. now, the lockdown kicked off at 11 58 and it ended just hour now, we're also told that boy who was injured was transported to a local hospital and is being treated. it's not clear where how he's doing tonight, but we are told that that individual who was a part of that stabbing, he was taken down to the juvenile facility as well. and charges are pending. and we also have tried to reach out to parents here on the on want to go on camera. but tonight we can tell that everyone's very on edge as well. so we're going keep you all updated here on and online for more information. back to you guys

in studio. >> all right. lets the good in live for us tonight in gilroy. obviously a tough day for the students and faculty there. a lesson will bring us updates as we get them. and you can always stay connected on kron. 4 dot com. thanks, alyssa. >> a homicide in san francisco has left a 25 year-old trans woman dead. police say it happened off polk street and the afternoon of may 15 family friends and colleagues identifying the victim as michelle henry police say it started as a fight between 2 people. henry was found with multiple stab wounds at the scene. she did not survive. police have made an arrest in the case. honey mahogany director of the office of transgender initiative, san francisco has called this a big loss for the community. >> so this personal for the community, you know, on this is one of our home. so many people were touched by her personally and shared their stories of who she was as a person, someone who loved fashion, someone you know, it's kind of shy, quiet, but

really knew how to lift spirits. somebody who had an infectious laugh. >> a vigil was held for michelle tuesday night at mother bar a spot she used to frequent often police say, although an arrest has been made, this does remain an open and active investigation. anyone with information is asked to call san francisco police. >> the federal bureau of prisons will go to trial next year over claims it allowed an environment where guards sexually abused inmates at the women's prison in dublin. today was the first public hearing since that prison was closed last month. the judge scheduled another hearing for later this month until both sides to be ready for the trial by june of next year. the inmates who were in dublin have since been transferred out of that prison. but some of them have sued the prisons bureau claiming the agency failed to root out abuse. so far, 5 prison officials have pleaded guilty to sexually abusing inmates. 2 others have

already been convicted. the city of oakland has made it official. oakland has entered into an agreement to sell its half of the coliseum site to the african american sports and entertainment group. this finally puts the site one step closer to being redeveloped with a focus on the community. kron four's. dan kerman reports. >> african american sports and entertainment group has agreed to the terms to purchase the city of oakland share of the oakland coliseum. >> it's something that's been decades in the making. now a real step forward towards redeveloping. this 112 acre site, which is home to the oakland coliseum. >> this is a moment where he still comes going to change. this is a moment where he spoke with who's going to and so the coliseum site really represents an incredible opportunity to do to revitalize this community without displacing without

justification. so we're really excited about wednesday's news conference was held that castleman high school where students have been working on designs for the coliseum site. >> well, nothing has been finalized. the mayor says several things will be required. >> the future of the coliseum complex as envisioned would include the development of thousands of much needed new affordable units and market rate housing increased curating outdoor green space commercial and retail spaces. of course, all of this done in community. this is just the very beginning, folks. we have a lot more to be done. >> the oakland arena will also remain for entertainment. but the project will move forward with or without a professional sports team. but any significant movement forward, we'll rely on the oakland a's selling the other half of the coliseum to a a s e g i can say. >> that we are and hopefully negotiations and they've continued and they are moving in a positive direction in our objective clearly is too be

on resources that will help staff and students struggling with high cost of living. >> university of california service and patient care workers rallying outside the ucsf campus in san francisco wednesday afternoon. another printed at parker is senior custodian at ucsf, a job she's had for 17 years. greg, pay is too we food it up and shown up since the pandemic. we have been nonstop to do in and it would not been acknowledged kercher is just one of several uc workers taking the time to pick it on their lunch break to have their voices heard about accessible housing and better health care wages. these were the frontline heroes during the covid pandemic. stenhouse is a spokesperson for the union representing the workers. they cannot afford to living in in the communities where they and

many of these members are commuting 3, 4, hours. >> every day just to get to their jobs, leaving in their priced out of the housing market. the workers are also rallying to call on the university of california to divest its investment holdings from industries of the war in gaza. you see is the state's 3rd largest employer with single largest landlord. it has billions of dollars in unrestricted assets land. it refuses to lift a to help these workers with the very real housing crisis that's plaguing california, according to a spokesperson from the university of california, negotiations started in january and the first tentative agreement was reached this week. >> a statement to kron 4 reads in part, quote, we have guys with the challenges are asked me represented employees face, especially california, is increasing cost of living. our goal is to acknowledge their growing contributions, appreciate their commitment and offer a financial package that helps alleviate some of

day if you are inland at lawrence was actually hot. i would like to say, is that for you there today? all right. folks along the coastline, not so much cooler temperatures up toward the beaches. a little fog kind of lingering along the host coastline. and you can see that he's kind of hanging out right now toward the golden gate bridge. we're going to see more of that and maybe couple patches of fog overnight tonight. not that much. but what's nice temperatures inland. 74 degrees in warm and san jose, a warm 79 in lemore. 62, much cooler in pacifica. 63 right now in san francisco. 71 berkeley and 75 degrees in petaluma. so some nice temperatures all around starting off with some fog this morning and then started to give way to that northerly component. the wind there see some lingering clouds trying to hang out near the coastline. but overall, things have cleared out a whole lot around the bay area. just a couple patches of fog out toward the beaches in general, though, looks like some nice weather ahead. if you're stepping outside tonight, good night to do it. skies stay mostly clear. the first part temperatures holding out in the 70's in the valleys finally cooling down just after 8 o'clock of the sun begins to set and looks like

>> san jose police officers and loved ones of fallen officers gathering today to honor those who have died in the line of duty. a memorial and flag ceremony remembers the 13 fallen officers of the san jose police department who passed away between 1924 2016 mayor matt mahan addressed recent shootings that injured 3 officers on the job in last year. >> 3 of our own san jose police officers been hit by a bullet on duty since we last

gathered here. thankful we will not be reading their names to to date the best that we can hope to do here today. just properly honor these men. i remember in their stories. celebrating their heroism. and committing ourselves to keeping their memory a lot. >> earlier this month, kevin briones started a shoot out with police after his former partner called the cops on him. he's accused of shooting 2 officers and is now facing attempted murder charges. a crippling patrol staffing shortage at the vallejo police department is being addressed at the state level. now. >> bill approved by the senate this week is trying to bring the department much needed relief. napa base, democratic state senator bill dodd is proposing to allow qualified retired solano county sheriff's deputies to temporarily return to the department and work full time.

he says the bill could save taxpayers money while deterring crime and improving response times. but not everyone is on board. >> saying it's a state of emergency, but don't make the state of emergency worse by bringing in officers it make more emergency concerned that you're going to end up catching some of the better while trying to people back. earlier this year. >> melissa knowles, who we just heard from represented willie mccoy's family at a 5 million dollars. civil rights settlement with the city of vallejo mccoy was gunned down by the police in 2019. she says an independent entity should be required to examine the retired officers records if the bill passes through the assembly, it will end up on the governor's desk and could likely be signed by september. >> the san francisco sheriff's office is apologizing after exposing dozens of children to tear gas during a training exercise 20 students and one teacher at portola elementary school in san bruno reported

nesbitt spoke with the burlingame senior. he joins us live in studio with more on her political message. trump granda. well, when you first look at lauren chang's artwork, you question what it means. she explained to me how it's a message about the number of mass shootings in the u.s. and her plea to lawmakers to do more to prevent >> every year congress holds a high school art competition, u.s. representative from each district picks a winner this year. representative kevin mullen pick burlingame senior lauren chang. she explain to me how a graphic art piece is also a message issue of gun violence in our country and uses 646 dots to symbolize the 646 mass shootings in the year 2022. each year that the 17 year-old went to school in burlingame, she watched school shootings and other us towns make the news living with the anxiety that her own school could be targeted. i don't think that teens in the restive. our country should have to. have those fears on a daily basis. and so that's but

reno. but yeah, the forecast tomorrow we've got a lot of 60's out there by tomorrow afternoon, 70's into reno. it'll be sunny and bright. if you're headed that direction back the next few days, looks like some very nice weather ahead as we get into the holiday weekend, temperatures may cool down just slightly on friday saturday, we're talking those temperatures topping out in the 60's. so if you do plan to go ski, go in the early morning with the temperatures are much colder as you head toward the middle of the day. the temperatures warm up to skin that slush. that's not as good, of course. but something else to watch out for 2, as you're going to see some pop-up thunderstorms likely in the afternoon over the next couple days and probably into the weekend to this will be coming up interrupting in the afternoon hours. so you may go on the morning of may be nice and clear. watch out, though in the afternoon you could see some showers and thunderstorms across the high country. thank you, lawrence. still ahead, oakland's former top cop is still trying to make a difference in the city. >> while also suing it, we'll break down the complexities of announcement today. ig >> and another tax on chevron's richmond refinery moving closer to the november
