trapped in car seat was saying help me. >> hear from the man who rescued a toddler from a burning car. when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. and good eveling, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis and i'm grant lotus. firefighters rushed to a metal scrapyard in redwood city. >> after a big fire broke out that fire is finally out this evening. however, after sending huge plumes of smoke into the air that could be seen and smelled for miles away. the community there is still dealing with the aftermath. a crime for santorum joins us now live from redwood city tonight with the latest. dan. >> yeah, vicki and grant, as you can see the smoke here dissipated after that fire that broke out here at sims metal earlier this afternoon, crews were able to get a handle on within a couple of

sims metal saying that they're still working on figuring out exactly what happened here. but that large plume of smoke drifted down wind and into communities. and santa clara county. a massive fire at a scrap yard in redwood city sending thick, dark smoke into the air. fire crews rushing to sims metal near bear island wednesday afternoon. >> as large grapple closs pick through the burning rubble. workers at nearby businesses describe what they heard before. a large plume of smoke blanketed the area. found couple. >> like right now like >> manuel michelle works at a neighboring water, recycling company and says he's seen small fires that sims metal before. but out like this, the smoke is about, i'd say 100 100 feet up. >> just 7200 feet up in the air flames as high as 30 feet. the smoke drifted down wind into santa clara county,

setting off an advisory from officials for sensitive groups to stay indoors. >> the bay area air quality management district says they're also investigating the fire. >> this is not the first time sims metal has had a run-in with the district. the redwood city facility was issued violations in 2012 2013 and in 2018, a large fire at the richmond facility forced to shelter in place. are samples collected at the time by the air quality management district found high levels of particulates and the cancer causing chemical benzene. michelle says he's gotten used to hearing the booms from the scrap yard, but he's not used to seeing big flames. your booms, like i said all the time sometimes, but that the nothing major probably been the biggest fire yeah. >> well, a spokesperson for sims metal tells kron 4 that they apologize for any disruptions that this fire may have caused. again, this fire is under investigation, but we

have learned that there were no reports of any injuries in redwood city. dan thorn kron, 4 news. all right, a close call. >> and rescues toddler from a burning car just before it blew up in flames on highway 4 in antioch. parker for sara stinson joins us now live in the studio after talking with and sarah. >> yeah, you know what? we often tell people to say something. if you see something. well, a man was driving with his 10 year-old daughter when they came across this horrific scene. a rolled over car on fire. his daughter noticed people trapped inside and then they called instead of calling 9-1-1 he pulled over and ended up rescuing a little girl from the flames. video shows the heroic moment when a man jumps into a car on fire and pulls out a 3 year-old girl. i just told myself >> i wasn't going to leave that little girl in that car. >> troy white says he was driving on highway 4 in antioch with his daughter delilah tuesday afternoon when

they noticed a car rolled over and on fire with people stuck inside. just scared because i knew the car catches on fire. could white says he ran up to the car and saw a woman climbing out. so he went to the other side of the car. looked inside. and what i seen was >> it was it was was a nightmare. you know, it was a child she was strapped into her car seat with flames continuing to grow white, worked as quickly as he could to get the girl out. it's just such a brave little girl. she wasn't crying. she was scared. whatever member saying was help me help me help me. when i got around. maybe 30 seconds later, i feel like everybody that was there was going get away from the vehicle. >> you know, i just i had to turn >> minutes later, the car blew up in flames. chp says the mom suffered minor injuries and went in the ambulance with her daughter who had cuts from broken glass are just glad that family a video of the rescue is now circulating online. many are calling white a hero to which he attributes

night memorial day weekend? that's all coming up in weather. >> all right. look forward to that. thanks, kathy. feel really high school student is recovering tonight after being stabbed in a fight on campus. police say it happened today at christopher high school. 2 students got into a fight in the locker room. there. the injured student was taken to the hospital. the other student was arrested. >> woman is in the hospital tonight after she was hit by a man riding a bicycle happened this afternoon outside a san francisco city lights bookstore in north beach. a witness tells us that the cyclist hit an elderly woman and then just took off. >> she fell down and he's yelling at her, started yelling at her white to move. you know, just in a panic state and out, walked up to the lady just to comfort her because she started she was. you know, what i had, yelled to somebody to call 9-1-1. got on his bike and left.

>> police arrested that cyclists just a few blocks away. a staffing shortage at the vallejo police department is being addressed now at the state level. a bill approved by the senate this week is trying to bring the department much needed relief. it allows much needed relief. it allows qualifie county sheriff's deputies to temporarily return to the department to work full time. but not everyone is on board with the plant. >> saying it's a state of emergency, but don't make the state of emergency worse by bringing in officers it make more emergency concerned that you're going to end up catching some of the better while trying to people back. >> earlier this year, melissa nold represented willie mccoy's family, a 5 million dollars civil rights settlement with the city of vallejo. mccoy was gunned down by filet o police in 2019. she says an independent entity should be required to examine the retired officers records

if the bill passes through the assembly, it will end up on governor newsom's desk and could be signed by september. >> more arrests, more stolen cars recovered and the seizure of more illegal guns. that is the news that's coming out of the governor's office about the chp involvement in the east bay since february. the governor's office says that the targeted enforcement recovered 726 stolen vehicles made 355 arrest and seized. 46 crime linked firearms. in a statement, the governor says that he commends the chp is work to support local law enforcement agencies statewide and that the state will continue to hold perpetrators accountable for criminal activity. >> former oakland police chief leronne armstrong is now running for city council while he's also suing the city of oakland. he filed the initial paperwork with the city clerk's office this morning. armstrong is trying to take the seat currently held by

rebecca kaplan, 8 other candidates are already running for that seat. armstrong says he believes his experience as the police chief qualifies him for the job. >> the fact that i live in oakland have chose to raise my family. oakland, children to volunteer activity into activities in the city of oakland shows that i am completely connected to this city. and i want to be a part of this city change moving forward. >> mayor sheng thao fired armstrong last year over his handling of a pair of misconduct cases. armstrong was later cleared of any wrongdoing. he has since filed a suit against the city for wrongful termination. >> acting governor of california laney lock us has declared today. harvey, now day milk was the first openly politician in california. and today would have marked his 94th birthday. tragically became a martyr not long after being elected to the san francisco board of supervisors when he was killed in city

woman was killed in the tenderloin conference. tiffany justice talks to with the translator who knew the victim. >> i think her life was just beginning. and so for her to be murdered at the age of 25 is just so heartbreaking and so many ways. >> wednesday, the trans community mourning a good friend with a kind heart who was killed. san francisco police say there was a physical altercation between 2 people around 2 in the afternoon on may. 15th at a residence near jones street just north of geary officers finding a woman with stab wounds. she did not survive. family friends and colleagues identified that person as 25 year-old michelle henry, big loss for the community says honey mahogany director of the office of transgender initiatives, san francisco. so this personal for the community. you know, i'm this is one of her own and >> again, you know, there was such a huge children b pack, some other bar with people and

no really shocking. the san francisco police department arresting 33 year-old ramani. you ha she for the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought. now, police say although an arrest has been made, this remains an open and active investigation. >> anyone with information is asked to call sfpd is tip line reporting in the newsroom. tipping justice kron. 4 news. >> new at 10 police are investigating another death in the tenderloin. this one happening near turkey and jones street happened last friday night and vesta gators are lling the death suspicious, but do not say how the victim died. but anyone with information is certainly being asked to call police. >> crews in rose. they're looking into what caused a fire that killed a man earlier this week. it happened monday night hampton way just off sebastopol road. investigators say the fire was at a tiny home built on a commercial property without the city's approval. no permits. crews

found the man dead inside the building. cause of death has not been determined. the federal bureau of prisons is set to go on trial next year over claims that. >> it allowed an environment where guards sexually abused inmates at the women's prison in dublin inmates have been transferred out of the facility. some of them suing the prisons bureau claiming the agency failed to root out abuse. the case is set to go to trial by june of next year. so far, 5 prison officials have pleaded guilty to sexually abusing inmates 2 others have already been convicted. >> university of california workers were rallying up and down the state today in san francisco as well. many of them, our custodial workers asking for accessible housing and better wages. >> pay is too we food it up

now are a little warmer than they were. 24 hours ago in santa rosa. but many other places a lot cooler livermore down 9 degrees compared to last night. and today's temperatures were pretty close to normal from san francisco to oakland numbers there in the 60's. but you would expect mid 70's for many areas inland, but a little bit warmer than that from san jose all the way to santa rosa. we're looking at a high temperature tomorrow at 63 degrees. cool on the coastline in the mid-fifties. the cooling trend continues. looking at 64 in burlingame in palo alto, only 67 degrees, south bay temperatures. well, we're looking at many areas in the 70's hard pressed to find anything in the 80's until you get up to maybe antioch, low 80's for them and 80 degrees in concord. 81, some areas in basically in the low 80's all the way through santa rosa. but right there at the coastline, we're looking at the 50's 59 degrees in stinson i've got the tenant 10 coming

up in just a bit. all right, kathy, looking forward to that. thanks. as memorial day gets closer, chp says its maximum enforcement period goes into effect starting this week. >> you can expect more officers on the roads out there starting at 6 friday evening, right on through midnight next tuesday. chp says 46 people died during last year's holiday weekend. police arrested more than 1100 for duis. the agency says that that averages out to about one arrest every 4 minute. >> walmart is laying off more than 560 workers from its offices in san bruno in sunnyvale. it's also asking other employees to relocate in the bay area as well as in arkansas and new jersey. a spokesperson for walmart says the layoffs are related to changes because of a reduction in what they call several 100 campus roles. andy spade target is closing off its a

1924 2016 mayor matt mahan addressed recent shootings that hurt 3 officers on the job last year. >> 3 of our own san jose police officers been hit by a bullet on duty since we last gathered here. thankful we will not be reading their names to to date the best that we can hope to do here today. just properly honor these men. i remember in their stories. celebrating their heroism. and committing ourselves to keeping their mempry a lot. >> earlier this month, a man was in a shootout with police after his former partner called the police on he is accused of shooting 2 officers. he's now facing attempted murder charges. >> police in oakley say dna has helped them crack a assault cold case for more than 20 years ago. the 2002, the victim was walking her dog near laurel road. what a man sexually assaulted her at

>> now attend the city of oakland has entered an agreement to sell their half of the coliseum site. yeah. kron four's dan kerman reports on who it's being sold to and what's next for the site. >> i have faith that in partnership with the african american sports entertainment group that the potential that we always talk about here in oakland, that potential specifically here in deep east oakland that it will finally be realized redeveloping the 112 acre site that now houses the oakland coliseum. >> has been discussed for decades now. a significant move forward as the city of oakland has agreed to sell its half of the site. >> to the african american sports and entertainment group. >> there's a new beginning. a new chapter of new everything. new sports teams, new housing, new development, new green

>> so they're going to stop everyone from driving excessively. but some people will slow down. senator scott wiener says speed is a huge factor in the number of people dying on california roads. >> more than 4,000 people a year. that's up more than 20% in the last 5 years. the senator says he thinks he has a way to make at least some people more aware, so-called speed limiters. >> so this is existing technology that use in some cars right now. and it's very simple that it if you go more than 10 miles over the speed the car will alert. you will be it. but beat what watching a lie just to alert. you're not. it's a salacious one time. lot of times people are intending to go in excessive speed and even realize help out cars traveling. >> the bill would have the speed devices and all new cars made or sold in california by

here's a look at forecast for tomorrow. 63 degrees in san francisco. this is a cooling trend. so we're already started that out today. again, a little bit cooler tomorrow, right along the coast numbers right there in the 50's. 57 in half moon bay and the bay shoreline still kind of cool. 64 degrees in burlingame. so this is cooler than normal. we're seeing a cooling trend continue. also in palo alto at 67 and even in the south bay. i'm not seeing much in the way of 80's. not yet. 78 and campbell, you go to the east bay. we're looking at things just under 80 76 in dublin. and then you get to 80 in concord and 83 degrees in britain would up to be on be 81 degrees. 81 also in santa rosa. look so yea, ok, right along the coastline. 59 degrees. but we're looking mainly at mostly sunny conditions. the 10 day forecast at 10 o'clock here. it is the 10 to 10. we're looking at the cooling trend

her plea to lawmakers to do more to prevent every year congress holds a high school art competition. >> u.s. representative from each district picks a winner this year. representative kevin mullen pick burlingame senior lauren chang. she explain to me how a graphic art piece is also a message issue of gun violence in our country and uses. >> 646 dots to symbolize the 646 mass shootings the year 2022. each year that the 17 year-old went to school in burlingame, she watched school shootings and other us towns make the news living with the anxiety that her own school could be targeted. there's been school shootings, shootings in the public shootings directed towards racial and in my middle school, we had a walkout. and then the next day we had a potential school shooting threat as the winner. chang's art will be hung in the u.s. capitol building for one year. she's been told it will be seen in a hallway between congressional offices and the house floor. it's only win this week. early game high school principal doctor jan fong.
