restaurants and fisherman's wharf have now filed a lawsuit against san francisco. plus, from the road to the skies pack your patience. a busy holiday travel weekend is here. >> station. he's calling for news 2. >> thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 2. i'm justine waltman. we're going to start now with this amazing story out of contra costa county, where these fair workers were robbed. 2 of them, we're attempting to deposit money at a bank in antioch where they were then robbed at gunpoint of nearly $90,000 called for swift planes, how this all happened >> long after the last visitors exited the contra costa county fair at the event park in antioch. police say 2 fair employees were tasked with taking the money collected from admissions fees to the bmo bank depository on summersville road to drop off the catch. they parked in the

bank at around monday morning as they were in the process of opening a box. vehicle pulled up. suspect exited approach. the 2 victims >> the bag, which is a backpack full of cash. >> and their cell phones, antioch police investigations. lieutenant desmond bittner says the lone suspect was armed and pressed a gun to one of the victims backs were told the loss was a right around $88,000. so to be exact and has 87,000, 800 and some change, the suspect left in a vehicle and has not been found. all we have and the suspect was a unknown race. male. we're in dark clothing and wearing a mask. we stopped by the administrative offices here at the event park with questions about the incident. but the ceo and manager job ringle declined to comment. it's unclear why the employees were told to deposit the money so early in the dark morning. lieutenant bittner says investigators are looking into whether or not the victims were followed from the event her to the bank. and if any

fair employees helped commission the robbery. are investigators looking trying to find, you know, if we have any similar robberies with similar within the past few months and will you know, we did or will link them up and investigate best. we can call police if you were in the area during the robbery and can shed light on what happened. >> investigators are in the process of obtaining and reviewing surveillance video. >> that may have captured the incident in antioch, philippe djegal kron. 4 news. >> in the south bay, 3 family members accused in the death of a three-year-old girl in san jose will go to trial. a south bay judge deciding prosecutors. do you have enough evidence to try the trio for the death of our lee proctor? prosecutors say that her mom, uncle and grandfather performed a torturous exorcism on the girl at a church in 2021. they claim that they were trying to cast a demon out from her. she died inside

of the church. a coroner determined that she died from a combination of suffocation and smothering. and if convicted this, these 3 here could face life in prison. tragedy striking in san jose after crash led to an emergency c section. this happened. may 15th and farrington drive and south white road. a pregnant woman was trying to make a left turn and she hit an oncoming suv. the woman was rushed to the hospital. she had this emergency surgery. the infant was in critical condition for 4 days before passing away. so this now marks san jose's 18th traffic deaths this year. and over the long memorial day weekend, the chp will be out in full force looking for unsafe drivers. extra officers will be on the road starting at 6 tomorrow night. law enforcement says last year 46 people died and more than 1100 were arrested for duis during the holiday weekend. maximum enforcement will remain in place until midnight on tuesday. and take a look at what the chp santa cruz is

calling, quote, unacceptable behavior can read this ticket here. a driver getting a citation this morning for clocking 100 miles per hour on highway 17. chp santa cruz posting the speeding ticket on social media. the driver stopped for going 50 miles over the speed limit on that highway. that winds from san jose all the way through the santa cruz mountains. so drivers are being encouraged to the extra cautious this memorial day weekend and whether you're traveling by car or plane over the memorial day weekend, it is expected to be one of the busiest ever for travel kron. 4 s charles clifford joins us now live from south san francisco with what you need to know before you head out. hey, charles. >> hey, good afternoon. yet set to be a very busy travel weekend with millions of people driving and flying. triple a says it could be one of the busiest memorial day travel weekend in decades. >> 0.4 million people will travel by car this weekend

possibly making this the busiest memorial day for vehicle trips since record keeping began at the turn of the century here in the bay area. triple a says that the best times to drive will be early in the morning or after 07:00pm with the worst time being around 11:00am on friday when traffic could be about 50% heavier than normal. they also say that 80 between san francisco and napa will see the heaviest traffic at the airports. 3 and a half million people will fly this holiday weekend nationwide. here at sfo. the airport is expecting 755,000 travelers through monday. that's about an 8% increase over last year. oakland international is expecting 130,000 passengers with airports expected to be busy. it's recommended that travelers arrive 2 hours before their flight for domestic trips and 3 hours early for international flights. it's also a good idea to check ahead with your airline to make sure your flight is leaving on time. all right, back live. now.

2 million people are also expected to take boats, trains and buses. but for now in south san francisco, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> charles, thank you so much. and as charles mentioned, travel is expected to be even busier than last year. san airport, there's expecting 375,000 travelers to pass through over the next week. transportation officials attribute the rise in travel to airfare being down 6%. hotel prices being a little bit lower and rental cars being down about 10% compared to last year. officials expect tomorrow to be one of the busiest travel days up to 3 million people are expected to pass through airport checkpoints. all right. so we have this holiday weekend here are already looks like traffic even from this far away. you can see building there along the golden gate bridge because people are, you know, by 2 o'clock on thursday before a holiday weekend, a lot of people are ready to kick things off. we've got to see what the weather is going to be doing for us this weekend.

meteorologist kyla grogan in the weather center with all those details. hey there. yeah, i know a lot of people might be heading to the airport. so wanted to start with that. just to make sure we know what's going on there with airports as go throughout our day. and i can tell you that sfo is having a little bit of a delay. >> unfortunately, but that is just construction that is causing that so that that issue that should be well in hand pretty soon here. and then as we take a look outside, you can see all the beautiful blue skies that are out there. really lovely day today. i'm very nice. as you look at stormtracker 4, obviously not a cloud in the sky pretty much today. so really nice as we zoom out to, we had a few clouds in southern california, but as you can see, they've got a lot better there. still a little bit kind of hanging out in and around los angeles. but the rest of california, lots of sunshine temperatures looking good to 63 in downtown san francisco. we made it to 80 degrees in antioch, close to it in santa rosa, sitting at 79 and some nice 60's around the bay itself. hayward right now at about 69 degrees. wind is picking up. not surprising.

the city dropped the ball and taking care of the historic area in the lawsuit. the owner is asking for financial reimbursement of improvements to the 2 restaurants claiming that the upkeep was nearly 2 million dollars to put in floors and kitchen upgrades and a lot more. the lawsuit says that the port of san francisco has not brought the area dakota protect against erosion or earthquake standards. they also blame homelessness in crimes and preventing the restaurants from being successful. the owner says that he has spent millions in upgrades tourists i spoke with say it is a shame to have the places shuttered. >> during this is a very it's always sad when step shuts this is your first time thing. that's what so >> the city attorney's office releasing a statement in response to the lawsuit saying

>> the justice department filed the suit against ticketmaster and live nation accusing them of running an illegal monopoly over live events. this antitrust lawsuit announced today says the monopoly has led to higher prices for fans. 30 states and district attorneys general are part of this lawsuit, including california attorney general rob bonta and our washington correspondent basil john is live for us in dc. so based what's been the reaction to the so far today.

>> we'll just taylor swift fans might call this karma for the company. it's been under scrutiny for its concert ticket sale practices especially after ticketmaster's website crashed during the presale of swift's era's tour tickets. it is time to break it up. attorney general merrick garland announced the justice department is coming after live nation. the parent company of ticketmaster. >> it controls at least 80% of primary ticketing at major concert venues. >> the doj accused the entertainment company of running an illegal monopoly over live events in the u.s. blocking venues from using multiple ticket sellers and driving up prices. fans pay more in fees. artists have fewer opportunities to play concerts. 30 states brought the lawsuit forward, including connecticut democratic senator richard blumenthal has worked with other senators in the past to investigate the company. he said he's proud his home state is pushing to

punish live nation. it is way past time to break a month. blumenthal points out this issue impacts americans of all ages all across the country. a break-up of live nation. the music to fans, ears. carl's a vote. next choice supports this move. the most slam dunk antitrust lawsuit we've seen in a long time. live nation is furious with this announcement and put out a statement saying, quote, >> the dog is lawsuit won't solve the issues. fans care about relating to ticket prices, service fees and access to in-demand shows. now the doj says live nation controls more than 265 of north america's concert venues. >> and dozens of top amphitheaters live nation says it will defend against what it calls baseless allegations reporting live in washington. i'm basil, john. so basil, does this mean that the investigation to live nation is over or is it going to keep on going? over in congress. we

have when we spoke with senator richard blumenthal, he said that they will continue their investigation. if you remember, they did hold that senate hearing a couple of months ago when this whole fiasco really was kicking off in the halls of congress. but he said they're going to keep at it even while the doj is pursuing this lawsuit. basil, john, live for us in dc. thank you so much. oakland mayor sheng thao is proposing adjustments to the city's budget amid amid a projected 117 million dollar budget shortfall. she says the changes will prioritize public safety. >> economic development and community services. mayor thao addressing the mid cycle budget changes at city hall today. her first priority. she says this funding crime prevention and cleanup services. so this includes the cease-fire strategy fully-staffed 9-1-1, dispatch and oakland's fresh pilot program. house says the funding is vital to maintaining progress during difficult financial times. >> my mid cycle budget adjustment. it's physically

responsible. it's disciplined and maintains our focus on the issues that matter most to open doors over the coming weeks. my administration will engage in discussions with the city council about the mid cycle budget amendments. and i urge the city council to be thoughtful, to be disciplined, to be collaborative and solutions oriented as we move forward. >> the plan also includes reducing costs. and one way mayor thao is doing this is by implementing targeted hiring freeze for general purpose fund positions. the union for fair workers who operate the only ferry service to and from alcatraz island voted to authorize a strike. the ferry workers have been fighting for a contract since they created the union in 2022, they say the ferry company has refused to make itself available for regular negotiations and failed to foster good relations with its employees. the strike authorization is coming just a few days ahead of memorial day and the start

of the very busy summer tourist season. but no strike date has been set. all right. let's talk about the weather as we take this live look outside. kind of wear. the apa trez landing would be sneer. they're not there, but it's near there. kyle is here now with details on what's happening. yeah, thank you to fall beautiful day today and the weekend's going to cool down a little bit. but by the time we get to memorial day, we're actually going to be looking rather nice. nice out there right now as we take a live look from the east bay. >> east bay spots like livermore up to 77 degrees. 57 in san francisco, oakland about 64. you see some nice 70's out there. 79 santa rosa conquered up to 80 degrees. half moon bay. keeping that theme of the week. a little colder there at about 55. so here we are storm tracker. 4 obviously looks great and clear and tonight is a full moon and this one is called the flower moon. so you might have heard of this one. so apout. so i just kind of look t 7, o the farmer's almanac started naming moons back in the 30's. and this one came from native americans who saw

this as the time when flowers spring forth through all of north america. and i think that's pretty accurate, right? we've got a lot of green out there. a lot of flowers and probably a few people are suffering from as well because of it. but that full moon tonight should be relatively visible for you. you can see as we look at our forecast here, we are going to get some clouds roll in tonight. it's been a minute since we've seen this happen. so it is going to certainly put a little damper on that in some spots. but having said that, i think we'll get a pretty good shot at seeing it tonight, at least in the early part of the evening. now, tomorrow, you can see we're going to start off a little cloudy and then get a little clearing high pressure still in control. but as we roll into our friday notice we start to see those ice is dipping down that low pressure. just nudging us a little bit and that's dropping those temperatures. but once we get past saturday, we get zone. all right. we start to see kind of a flattening of that line and that means we're going to start to get a little bit warmer again and get back to more average temperatures. so by the time we get to monday for memorial day here in san francisco are looking out for mostly sunny skies about 66 degrees and inland.

>> in the east bay, a father jumped into action to save a little girl from a burning car. and this was right before it went up in flames on highway 4 in antioch kron. 4 sarah stinson has the story. >> and driving with his 10 year-old daughter in antioch says she noticed that it rolled over car on fire. had people trapped inside instead of calling 9-1-1 they pulled over and he ended up rescuing a little girl. video shows the heroic moment when a man jumps into a car on fire and pulls out a 3 year-old girl. i just told myself say. >> i wasn't going to leave that little girl in that car. >> troy white says he was driving on highway 4 in antioch with his daughter delilah tuesday afternoon when they noticed a car rolled over and on fire with people stuck inside. just scared because i knew the car catches on white

says he ran up to the car and saw a woman climbing out. so he went to the other side of the car looked inside. what i seen was. >> it was it nightmare. you know, it was a child. she was trapped in her car seat with flames continuing to grow. white, worked as quickly as he could to get the girl out. it's just such a brave little girl. she wasn't crying. she was scared. whatever member saying was help me help me help me. when i got around 30 seconds later, i feel like everybody that was there was going get away from the vehicle. >> you know, i just i had to turn long. >> minutes later, the car blew up in flames. chp says the mom suffered minor injuries and went in the ambulance with her daughter who had cuts from broken glass are just glad that family a video of the rescue is now circulating online. many are calling white a hero to which he attributes to his faith. >> that great a lot lately and again for ways to have service

and, you know, getting older. and i believe that he has a record. today was a last minute change of scheduling for me to even be there that chp says drugs nor alcohol are involved in this told that the little girl and her mom are recovering and okay. >> i'm sara stinson reporting in the newsroom. kron 4 news. >> teen is injured and another is in custody after a fight at their high school ended up with the stabbing. this happened just before noon yesterday at christopher high school in gilroy. police say the teens got into a fight in a locker room and one of the students pulled out a knife and allegedly stabbed the other student students then went on lockdown while and on site resource officer intervened until police officers arrived. a parent who lives in the area says this is a scary day for this community. >> doubt be a lot of heading before bed, i think you know, conversations we'll help them

feel more comfortable about feeling safe about going to school. >> the injured student was taken to the hospital. the teen who is the suspect here has been booked into the santa clara county juvenile hall. the incident remains under investigation. woman now in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was hit by a man riding a bicycle. this happened right outside of san francisco's city lights bookstore around 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, several police vehicles there responded. a witness told kron 4 the cyclist hit an elderly woman and then took off. >> she fell down and he's yelling at her, started yelling at her white to move. you know, just in a panic state and out, walked up to the lady just to comfort her because she started she was. and i had yelled to somebody to call 9-1-1. got on his bike and left.

>> police say they arrested the cyclists just a few blocks away and that person has not been identified. cross for putting the focus on fentanyl. a new research from the university of san francisco is showing a shifting landscape and how fentanyl is being consumed. >> data shows that locally and nationally drug users are moving away from injecting fentanyl and instead they're smoking it. the belief among users is that smoking is safer and as less likely to lead to an overdose. however, those researchers from usf found there's actually increased risk of overdosing from the residue that sticks to the smoking equipment. the researchers say the residue left by fentanyl resembles resin left by other drugs that people are often going to smoke from a pipe or peace. not knowing that there are traces of fentanyl left behind the study from usf is the first to explore fentanyl resident as a key contributor to an overdose. east bay

residents getting some financial incentives to buy an e-bike contra. costa county is providing 150 to $300 in cash and rebates on any e-bike purchased in the last 6 months. aside from having proof of purchase, the only other requirement is to be a contra costa county resident over the age of 18, no matter the residents in come, the base pay for a cash rebate is $150. and you can get more details about eligibility on our website. kron 4 dot com. technology is changing way people now interact with the dmv. the agency says 90% of its services are now digital starting on june. 3rd, most transactions will be done either online or through a self serve kiosk these kiosks are at dmv offices and retail location such as grocery stores, people be able to complete simple vehicle registration renewals, some drivers license renewals and other basic transactions. officials are hoping to reduce the number of in-person visits by 200,000 customers per month statewide. protests on college

campuses are causing some clashes on capitol hill today. some house lawmakers held a hearing to just about antisemitic demonstrations while others rallied first free speech, our washington, d.c., correspondent hannah brandt has the story. >> in the wake of antiwar protests across the country, university leaders got grilled in a hearing on capitol hill. each of you should be ashamed of your decisions that allow the anti-semitic encampments to endanger jewish students. congresswoman virginia foxx criticized the leaders of ucla northwestern rutgers for how they handled the protests. but the leaders pushed back address. every instance that's brought to our discriminatory behavior, including anti-semitism. congressman aaron bean says there haven't been enough consequences for antisemitism on campus. no one seems to be held accountable. but democrats argue they should be focusing on legislation instead of holding another hearing on the protests. congresswoman haley stevens wants to boost college

memorial day weekend let's take a look now at the bigger picture across the country. we know so many people are traveling. yeah, that's right. yesterday. remember, we had the tornado watch was happening. i'm happy to say that's not happening all that. you do still see this line of storms causing flooding in and around dallas where we have some of the storms yesterday and we did have some severe thunderstorms up in the northeast from that same line that they have now pushed out to sea. what you do see, though, in new mexico is red flag warnings and fire watches that are up and then you get to the north here. if you get into montana and wyoming, you have basically winter weather alerts that are up. so a lot going on. but if we look across the country right now, i had delays earlier today and my northeast airports for the east coast looking really good. our west coast airports as well. in fact, sfo, only one i've got a little delay and that is not weather-related. it is construction of one of their runways that cause some delays right now until that's all wrapped up. so if you are saying here for the holiday weekend, well, we're kicking it off early here at half moon bay with a little bit of sunshine out there looking really people out taking a walk. we're going to cool it on down half moon bay. look

out for a high of 56 degrees on saturday. obviously the more dramatic cool down coming to those of you are inland sunday. we'll start to see things get a little bit better if you're headed to southern california. this is your saturday forecast. it's going to be a cool one. starting off a little foggy on sunday as well. so temperatures not bad, but we're still going to be around 70 degrees in los angeles and of lake tahoe. is your destination for that last weekend of skiing? it's going cool on saturday there about 58 lake tahoe. but by sunday, we're going up those temperatures about 10 degrees. so they'll be warming up just like we will hear in the bay. back to you. >> all right. take a look at this. the self-checkouts are closed now at the target in emeryville. there are now signs directing shoppers to the cashiers. not exactly sure what prompted the closure, but it's certainly an inconvenience for shoppers who are in a hurry. >> it's harder for me with 2 toddlers under 5. i mean, it's it's just like anyone who has his nose and alive. i still

>> the asian american and pacific islander learning community at chabot college in can last is one of its lead organizers. i see it as a family, a support group and just knowing that i have people that look like me and higher education. it means a lot movement also give students more opportunities to learn api history and literature. arnold is director of student life at chabot college. just so important to that this is students see themselves in the curriculum. they understand their history and their culture and just have these opportunities to engage in that. >> with luck with their own culture, the name movement comes from other ethnic studies. movements datinw back to the 1960's. but it also describe something that happens a lot at community colleges. cameras is hoping to transfer and study political science at uc berkeley. you know, community college students are mostly forgotten because it's not a way for people to go to college

>> i have faith that in partnership with the african american sports entertainment group. but the potential that we always talk about here in oakland that potential specifically here in deep east oakland that it will finally be realized redeveloping the 112 acre site that now houses the oakland coliseum. >> has been discussed for decades now. a significant move forward as the city of oakland has agreed to sell its half of the site. >> to the african american sports and entertainment group. >> there's a new beginning. a new chapter of new everything. new sports teams, new housing, new development, new green space knew everything. so that's what this is all about. originally focus just on sports. >> cg is now focused on what's best for the community. and the mayor says that's what will make all the difference. >> it takes a partner that understand that there is a return on investment that doesn't necessarily show up on that balance sheet. that is just not all about the money, but it's about the community

and making sure that they're thriving. when this is built, that it's built for the community so that they can realize their family wednesday's news conference was held that castleman high school. >> where students have been working on designs for the coliseum site. well, nothing has been finalized. the mayor says several things will be required. >> the future of the coliseum complex as envisioned would include the development of thousands of much needed new affordable units and market rate housing increased curating outdoor green space commercial and retail spaces. of course, all of this done in community. this is just the very beginning, folks. we have a lot more to be done. >> the oakland arena will also remain for entertainment. but the project will move forward with or without a professional sports team. but any significant movement forward, we'll rely on the oakland a's selling the other half of the coliseum to a a s e g i can say >> that we are unhealthy
