>> all right. thank you for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm james fletcher on this friday. may 24th stay with me. let's go outside. actually, we are big story this morning. there we are. big story this morning comes to us from the bay bridge. we want to get right to video of a fire that's currently occurring now doesn't look quite like this at the moment. but earlier this hour or should say in the last hour it did a big rig caught fire on the westbound lanes just before your. but when island so traffic coming into san francisco now is being impacted quite substantially. but at the peak of this fire, this is what it looked before firefighters arrived on scene now. want to show you what it looks like now. the caltrans camera that is overhead shows you the situation that we have. it has improved. but on the far right side, you can see there's no traffic flowing and some fire trucks are in those lanes because that big rig the shell of it is still there. they were able to put the flames out, but now they have tow

trucks on scene and haul off. what's left of that big rig. in the meantime, traffic was reduced to just a far left lane for most of the 9 o'clock hour. luckily, 2 more lanes have been reopened in the last 10 minutes. if you're 3 left-hand lanes now flowing once again, but the damage is done. what was a friday light commute heading into san francisco right at 09:00am has now turned into a backup at the bay bridge toll plaza because that's how far this backup extends. you can see here from that whole plaza camera, all lanes jammed all the way back to the macarthur maze. right now. it's about 32 minutes, a half hour to get from the maze into san francisco. so just plan for that. i know a lot of you may have travel plans out of sfo and you're thinking of driving taking a ride share across the bay bridge to get there. you might want to go the bart route. that will be your better bet right now because there's no eta on when all those lanes are going to be open back up again. and even when they do open back up, it's going take a long time for this. back up to clear out. so bart, your best bet. if you have a flight at sfo,

you need to get to your coming from the east bay. or take the san mateo bridge. that's also an option for you as well. we'll get more traffic in a minute. but let's get over to the weather center because the holiday weather forecast on everybody's mind right now. john, good morning thanks for keeping us updated on that, james. definitely good at the bay bridge. if you're heading into the city. >> but if you are heading elsewhere, things are definitely looking okay. weather's cooperating. pretty good. this is a bit of a chilly looking view of san francisco right now. got some of the low gray overhead. the wind is pretty obvious pushing into the city this morning and it's not just a cool forecast at the coast either visibility is good. as you can see, that cloud cover was a lot. but take a look at these winds working into the bay from the north and west around 20 to 30 miles per hour. gusts this morning. this is really pushing some of that ocean cool there inland. not to mention we just have a pattern change in general that's contributing to quite the cool down today and tomorrow system well below average temperatures for the start of this memorial day weekend temps right now are in the

the far right at this point, they do have the left 3 lanes open. so that's helping for a long time. that was just a far left lane open. but it's slightly better there. and we are seeing that trickle down effect at the bay bridge because the drive time has gone down. it was 36 minutes not too long ago, but now it's down to 29. so just under a half hour to get from the macarthur maze into san francisco. this is going to be a problem. if you've got a flight at sfo, let's say you're planning on flying out for the labor day or the memorial day holiday weekend. maybe take bart or take the san mateo bridge to get over to the peninsula. the other bridges are doing fine. no problems at the san mateo bridge. 13 minutes across that span. we're looking at a good right here at the richmond. sandra fell your west bound 5.80, right, just 8 minutes to cross the water. and then marin county commuters getting into san francisco's just 20 minutes. basically to get from nevada down into the city. that's the traffic. now let's find out more about the weather. john, good that few of the golden gates nice got some sunshine out. there are also some sun above san jose

back here at 10, 30 this morning with a quick check of weather and traffic. we do want to begin with the roads, though, because the big problem spot is the bay bridge. so here's what you need to know. there was a big rig that caught fire around 9 o'clock this morning. and this is video showing what it was like at its and here a closer in view of firefighters on the deck of the bay bridge spring water into that burned out traylor portion of this big rig. that's what they're dealing with right so far, they have opened up 3 lanes on the far left side. and that's what you're seeing in the live camera feed now from caltrans. but the fact that 3 lanes are open really isn't doing much to unclog the backup that has formed in the wake of this accident because here's the bay bridge. and you can see it's about 35 minutes to get from the macarthur maze into san francisco. if you have travel plans for memorial day weekend that take you to sfo.
