>> and a cool wind blowing in the town right for the unofficial beginning of summer. what about your holiday forecast? we'll have that coming up next. when fun time. >> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. >> thanks so much for joining us at 10. i'm vicki liviakis and i'm grant lotus tonight. a record number of people are hitting the roads, getting out of town, going to airports, just trying to have some fun. this memorial holiday weekend. triple a says that airports are going to be really packed. >> more than we have seen in 20 years and on the road, more than 43 million people expected to travel at least 50 miles from home. kron four's lawrence karnow joins us now with a look at the conditions people face this weekend. is there on the roads in the air? whatever. hey, lourdes. yeah. hey, guys. yeah. i kind of got a taste of it today, right? boy, what a cool down. we had across the bay area that onshore wind. the cool temperatures coming right off the ocean. waters drop in temperatures. almost 20 degrees in some spots inland.

now, here's the good news. as we get the memorial day, those temperatures are going to start to recover. i think we're going to see a lot of sunshine on memorial day. not going to able to get rid of the fog entirely, but at least the temperatures will begin to warm up highs in the 70's. maybe couple low 80's inland as we head toward monday inside the bay should be a beautiful day after a couple patches of fog, some 60's and 70's 50's and 60's out along the coastline. but today or that fought really came back and hardly burned off in some parts of the bay area that made for some much cooler temperatures all across the board. and now you can see on the very latest satellite image. we've got a cold front that's dropping in the bay area. and so that is going to usher in some much colder air again for tomorrow. so if you thought it was chilly today, i think it's even colder around parts of the bay area. tomorrow. the clouds are beginning to move in once again. so that front going to move on through begin to fall apart as it does leave behind really kind of some cool mild temperatures, maybe even some drizzle out along the immediate coastline. we've seen some of that already

tonight and more on the way for tonight as well into tomorrow morning. we'll have more on the rest weekend forecast coming up a few minutes. look forward to that. thanks, lawrence. well, it is already been a busy travel day for people in the bay area trying to get out there and enjoy the holiday weekend for santorum giving us a look at the numbers. he joins us now live in the studio. >> with the holiday travel rush than vicki triple. a says this is going to be the busiest start of the summer weekend. >> and a longtime millions of drivers expected on the roads and hundreds of thousands of flights are taking off right now through tuesday. and this is likely a sign that all summer could draw a lot of traveling. >> it could be a record-breaking summer for travel as triple. a expects this memorial day weekend to be the busiest since 2005. they say nearly 44 million americans will drive at least 50 miles from now to monday while the tsa expects 3 million people to pass through security checkpoints in airports. >> and just friday alone,

of the upper deck of the bridge, just east of treasure island. the crash forcing westbound lanes to shut down for hours. drivers coming from the east bay tell kron 4 that it took him more than an hour just to get through the year. but when a tunnel, the big rig it was carrying produce at the time caught fire. investigators still trying to figure out just how that fire started. and in san jose all lanes are back open. finally on southbound 101 after a deadly crash there spilled about 100 gallons of fuel. this happened just north of blossom hill road. investigators say that a wrong-way driver crashed into a big rig. they say that the driver from san jose was thrown from his car and died at the scene. the driver of the big rig was not hurt. that is in the hospital after he was hit by a muni bus while riding a motorcycle. it happened in the outer richmond in the city this afternoon. >> at the intersection about beau and 44th avenue. officers believe the man ran a stop sign and then was hit by the

bus. the bus ran over his leg. he is expected to survive. no one on the bus was injured. >> have banned them. unlike after that. as you see, everyone started running. >> police continue to look for suspects involved in a shooting at a high school graduation last night at skyline. high in oakland. police say that a fight broke out in the parking lot with several suspects firing guns. they say that 3 people were shot. all 3 are expected to survive. >> the man in san jose has been arrested for the death of his mother. police say they found her body in the home on shadow dancne highway 87. her son was booked into jail as detectives try to figure out a motive there. >> police in san francisco investigating after they say a pedestrian was hit and killed by a commercial truck. it happened yesterday afternoon in the city's tenderloin in the area of ellis in jones street. they say the driver stayed on the scene and is cooperating.

>> the man faces up to 5 years in state prison after he was convicted of molesting a 16 year-old girl on a muni train. prosecutors say the man molested the teenager last may on the jay church line while the teenager was coming home from school. a jury fend found the man guilty this week. his sentencing is scheduled for june 5th. >> new at 10, the only trauma center in east side, san jose could likely closed down this summer. the san jose regional medical center announcing the closure earlier this year and community advocate say that it's going to take some residents 20 to 30 minutes longer now to go to a hospital if they say have a stroke or heart attack as kron four's jack moment reports tonight. community leaders are now asking the state attorney general to investigate the hospitals. leadership. >> well, residents here in east side, san jose called the potential closure of the only trauma center in the area, a life or death decision. and now city leaders along with

residents here penned a letter to california's top cop. the attorney general's office asking them to investigate the owners of this hospital. i'm proud to stand firm in our request for attorney general rob bonta to launch a full investigation and to the recently announced closure outside the medical center friday. local advocates and city leaders say they're angry. it's time for the community to take action. >> the people of east san jose refused to wait. san jose councilmember peter ortiz represents the area where the medical center is. >> he says east side's access to this hospital saved his mom's life. she survived. >> heart attack last year. >> he's part of a coalition whose requesting california's attorney general to investigate hca healthcare, a for-profit health care operator which owns the hospital. hca, meantime says it's eastside trauma center shutting down partly due to fewer people using it. it's also set to slow down its stroke care unit. this closure is based on one goal.

>> more profits for their shareholders, but local leaders say they just don't buy it like single mom. jessica did. justin who says her family has had to depend on the trauma i've had to use it once myself for my son. >> and once for my father-in-law, he went there with a heart attack. their lives were saved. she says if the trauma center wasn't there, it may have been a different story. somebody can die in that time that they could have already been connected to something in the trauma center. you know, hca sent kron 4 statement that says regional medical center is disappointed by the actions of certain officials and activistse it goes on to say we have been working diligently with santa clara county leaders to ensure the long-term well-being of our community's health where we're going. but for jessica, she's not planning on stopping anytime soon, says organization, latinos, contra cancer, believes the closure is discriminatory. kind of like an attack on side of. >> you know, on our side of san jose. like we're just as

governor newsom has signed a bill into law allowing arizona doctors. >> to come to california to perform abortions on patients. this comes after the arizona supreme court ruled in favor of in 18, 64 law banning nearly all abortions in the state. since then, arizona lawmakers and the governor repealed the law. but that repeal will not take effect until the fall. in the meantime, governor newsom hopes california can help the people who need the procedure. in a statement, he says california will remain a safe harbor ready to defend abortion access because we value women's health and trust women to make the most intimate decisions about their bodies. health and futures and quote. >> the plan to connect san francisco in los angeles with

a bullet train is moving forward. the california high-speed rail authority expected to submit final plans next month to obtain complete environmental approval. the segment between palmdale and burbank is the last action that needs environmental clearance. it's also one of the most complex and challenging portions because crews, say it requires carving out some of the longest tunnels ever constructed through mountainous terrain. >> state lawmakers are now back in their districts for the long holiday weekend, but not before investing hundreds of bills this week ahead of a key deadline kron four's capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports. >> yeah, we're talking more than 800 bills on all kinds of matters from speeding to child trafficking. >> we have a serious problem holding back tears, bakersfield, republican state senator shannon grove delivered emotional remarks on the senate floor about the

issue of child trafficking across the state. we cannot sit idly by children are bought and sold in california like pieces of meat and underground grocery store. that's why grove says she's been fighting to get her bill sb 1414, past from its house of origin. the state senate and get it over to the state assembly ahead to friday evening's deadline groves bill would classify the purchasing of a minor for commercial as a felony. that could increase penalties and jail time for those convicted. but to groves, great frustration. democrats on the senate public safety committee added amendments to the bill to exempt 16 17 year-olds in the legislation out of concern. some in that age range, maybe taking advantage of in lord into the purchasing of commercial notion is 16 17 year old children. >> are somehow less deserving of additional protections is absolutely absurd. stockton, democratic senator susan talamantes eggman called up members of her own party for adding in the exemption. i'm done with us. >> protecting people who would buy and abuse our children.

forecast there. and so far looking good. no delays being reported sfo, oakland or san jose. even with all the fog outside right now, i think will be ok as we head in toward tomorrow morning, too. high country kind of a different story. we've got some cold roll on through another one on the way that we have some thunderstorms popping up in the afternoon. they're scattered. but something have to watch out for. i think if you're heading the high country, see a couple of pop-up storms there. even some snow show the higher peaks. a likely tomorrow going to be mostly dry in the high country. but after that, things are going to change again. you see that cold front begin to dive in. there's not much energy with it. but here you go. that little frontal passage and there it is making its way on through. that's going usher in some cooler air. so really unusually cool start to the holiday weekend. temperatures in the monterey bay got a lot of clouds tomorrow morning. there's no getting around that likely going to see some drizzle too numbers in the 50's. maybe couple low 60's in place like leave this and wants a bill. very cool and breezy along the coastline. southern california, 71 in pasedena but cool toward the beach. 59 in long beach and 69 becoming

jumping up and down. san francisco mayoral candidate aaron peskin is a supervisor for the district where union square is located and where nintendo plans on opening its new store. the company says it will be a place for a wide range of visitors to experience the its products and characters from mario kart to poke him on the amazing it's going to attract young people, but also people my age who are nostalgic about nintendo. and it's exactly what union square needs. it's an attractive experience. friday's announcement comes at a time when many retailers have closer union square locations. >> jewelry, store. sure. even company closed earlier this month after operating in union square for 172 years. ceo of the union square alliance, marisa rodriguez saying, quote, this exciting addition, heralds a new era in retail experiences, blending family friendly fun with the cutting edge spirit of san francisco's renowned gaming and technology sectors. but using union square reaffirms the district status as a premier destination when people come because they want to go to

>> tonight police in daly city are looking for 2 people accused of assaulting a store employee while they were trying to steel boxes of candy. they say it happened last tuesday at the smart and final grocery store on mission in bismarck street. officials say the store manager has to man and a woman leaving the store with a cart full of candy boxes for the receipt. they say the man then punched the manager 3 times in the ribs before leaving with only a couple of boxes of candy. anyone with information is being asked to call daly city

>> now at 10, 30, well, much has been said about the recall of alameda county district attorney pamela price and may not be the only recall that oakland voters will have to decide this november. more drama as the group says they've already collected more signatures than they need to force a recall of oakland's mayor. >> kron four's kerman reports the push to recall oakland mayor sheng thao is pressing forward. we are having. >> and incorrectly successful recall campaign opponents of taos say they have so far gathered more than 30,000 signatures 5,000 more than the 25,000 needed. >> to force a recall election in november, people say, well, you know, you should give them more time more time to do

work. >> she's already almost destroyed oakland. we want to give her more time to completely destroy open. we cannot afford to do that. we cannot afford to do it. will recall backers have a laundry list of complaints. crime remains at the top of that list. but the mayor points to oakland police crime stats indicating crime is down 17% over the last 3 years down. 34 1% when you compare last year to this year in 2021. oakland had 134 homicides. >> we're now on track this year for less, for less than half of that, not only is crime down from last year. but it's down in comparison to the last several years. >> oakland. is getting back on track back ers of the recall admit some crimes are down. >> they also make the claim that's because people aren't reporting crimes as much as they used to. and because fed-up retailers have closed

oakland locations. should be all right. hopefully the weather cooperates. then. but that's a ways away. we're going to focus on this weekend. and for now, we'll take a live look here at sfo. speaking of lawrence is here to give us our forecast for getting away. yeah. you want to get away? boy, i didn't along the coastline. just kind of thick out there today. >> the temperatures very cool with that marine air really even spread some of the interior valleys, dropping some of those temperatures almost down about 20 degrees from yesterday's highs. really fallen off quite a bit. remember early on the week we're talking about some mid 80's, even some upper 80's warmer spots inland. not epanything close to that today. the sea breeze now carrying the fog on shore and even some g reported around the bay area tonight, more than on the way. check out the change in the last 24 hours as change in the last 24 hours as temperatures really took a concord, 15 degrees cooler. the more 11 degrees cooler fairfield and ted cruz cooler and hayward. but all around, you could really feel those

temperatures change as that cold marine air just kind of settled in. so today a well below the average in san francisco. only 56 degrees in the clouds kind of hanging out all day long. 57 in oakland, 67 degrees in san jose. 63, can you believe that in livermore? 65 degrees in concord one warm spot. 74 degrees in santa rosa. but tonight, the clouds already begin to move back on shore. that patchy drizzle started develop already. that will be in place tomorrow morning. maybe a little slick early on, at least along the coastline and then the clouds to give way to some sunshine. lot of part of the day across much of the bay area may be some lingering clouds right along the coastline sunday lakers star was more patchy fog in the morning, but some sunshine and some warmer weather by sunday afternoon. i think the temperatures, yeah, they're looking pretty typical. you get a good onshore flow like look at the numbers. even in the valleys. we've got some 40's and some 50's all the way through now is that cool? marine air is working its way well inland tonight and more on the winds still gusty in spots. we've got some gusts over 30 miles an hour into san

francisco, 20 miles an hour. and oakland, so still that onshore breeze doing its work, going to carry low cloud deck. well onshore tonight, front passing on through low clouds and fog. plenty of that going to be in place tomorrow morning. more on the way this front kind of coming through and falling apart. so there's not a lot of energy with it, but it's ushering some colder air. so temperatures are going take a drop by tomorrow afternoon look at the forecast overnight tonight. see plenty of the clouds and you'll see the green there. that's a model start to pick up some and some drizzle early tomorrow morning as we head toward tomorrow afternoon, the air kind of dries out and maybe we'll get little sunshine around the bay area for lucky temperatures, though, going to be cool 50's in the san francisco cool 50's and breezy right along the coastline with some drizzle especially in the morning inside the bay about 59 degrees in millbrae, 60 of burning game becoming sunny, but cool. it was cited about 59 degrees, the south bay. brt you can see highs generally in the 60's across the santa clara valley in the east bay, about 6, 7 degrees in lemore. 65 in dublin. 59 degrees in san leandro. 59 also berkeley
