>> news station, this at 11. >> now at 11, the roads may be clear at this hour. but earlier today, freeways all across the bay area where bumper to bumper thanks to holiday weekend traffic and a couple of nasty accidents. good evening. thanks for joining us here on kron for news at 11. >> i'm noelle bellow and i'm grant lotus in the south bay after a 10 hour closure, 2 lanes of southbound want to wander back open tonight following a deadly crash that involved a big rig and a sedan. it happened north of the blossom hill exit around 11 o'clock this morning. investigators say a 22 year-old man from san jose was going the wrong way on the freeway before he collided with the big rig. the 22 year-old was thrown from the car, died at the scene. the

big rig driver was not hurt. however, the truck spilled about 100 gallons of diesel onto the road, 2 lanes of 101 were closed until just after 9 o'clock. tonight as crews clear the scene there of all the wreckage. >> meantime, on the bay bridge, a big rig caught on fire on the upper deck this morning. this is just east of treasure island. it caused some gridlock on the bridge. westbound lanes were closed for hours. one of our producer said it took them more than an hour just to get through the year but point a tunnel. all lanes were not open until around 6 o'clock this evening that big rig was carrying produce at the time it caught on fire. investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked the flames as of tonight, extra chp officers are out patrolling california's roadways. >> they're looking for people who are driving unsafely over the holiday weekend, according to the chp, 46 people died in crashes and more than 1100 were arrested for dui across the state during last year's memorial day holiday weekend.

maximum enforcement this weekend will remain in place until midnight tuesday. >> it's already been a busy travel day for people looking to enjoy the holiday. aaa says to expect jam-packed airports and for roads. they're expected to be the busiest for memorial day weekend in nearly 2 decades. kron four's dan thorn took a look at the numbers. he joins us live now in studio with the holiday travel rush, damp. >> noel triple a says this is going to be the busiest start of the summer weekend in a long time. millions of drivers expected to hit the roads and hundreds of thousands of flights taking off from now through tuesday. and this is likely a sign that summer could be drawing a lot of travel. >> it could be a record-breaking summer for travel as triple. a expects this memorial day weekend to be the busiest since 2005. they say nearly 44 million americans will drive at least 50 miles from now to monday while the tsa expects 3 million people to pass through security checkpoints

california, people are right now paying an average of 5.17, a gallon for gas and then across the bay area, the cheapest gas that you're going to find will be in solano and santa clara counties, most expensive is in napa, which is averaging around 5.58 down for just regular gas grant. noel. all right. >> appreciate it, dan, as we take a live look outside weather top of mind issue on this holiday weekend. as we look live at sfo, busy. they're busy on the roads. people are out moving about lawrence, that wind today there was missed moisture in the air. yeah. what a big change in the weather 24 hours ago in earlier in the week and matter of fact. but yeah, i think for the holiday weekend we are going to see some warming weather. but it's going to take a little bit to get there as we head into a bore memorial day. looks like a nice day ahead as we're going to see some sunshine and temperatures are going to be warming up a memorial day. in fact, some places they come back in the 70's and the low 80's inland 60's 70's around the bay. cool fog will continue along the coastline

with 50's and some 60's there. but we've got plenty of clouds outside right now. tomorrow likely going to be the coolest day of the weekend. plenty of those clouds you can see the cool temperatures out thede all the way. the interior valleys as temperatures hovering in the 50's now. so you can really tell that cool marine ocean error has worked its way well inland. we've had winds gusting over 2030 miles per hour or so. the winds continue to blow the fog further on shore and weak cold front dropping in across the bay area. that may be just enough to crank up yet a little drizzle out there, too, mentioning and some of that in effect for tomorrow morning, at least along the coastline, we will find some sunshine in spots by the afternoon. we'll talk more about that your whole day forecast coming up in a few minutes. thank you, lawrence. >> and faces up to 5 years in state prison after being convicted of molesting a 16 year-old girl on a muni train. prosecutors say 39 year-old iman session molested the teen in may of last year on the jay church line, the teen was coming home from school when it happened. police arrested

session a month later. a jury found him guilty this week. his sentencing is scheduled for june 5th. >> south bay man has been arrested for the death of his mother. police found the woman dead on shadow dense drive thursday, anderson has now been booked into the santa clara county jail. police say he will be charged with murder. the motive and circumstances are being investigated. this marks san jose's 14th homicide of the year. >> heartbreaking and absolutely unacceptable. that's how the oakland superintendent is describing the shooting last night at skyline. high school's graduation ceremony. one person has been arrested, but police are now offering a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to an arrest of any additional suspects. police say 3 adults were injured when a fight broke out in the school parking lot last night following the commencement ceremony and multiple weapons were used. the school district has announced additional security measures for remaining ceremonies. new at

11, a fairfield businesses at risk of losing its license after police found the shop was selling marijuana and cocaine during a six-month investigation. police say they found the field to gift shop on west texas street and pennsylvania street was illegally selling drugs and a stolen bike. 2 men were arrested. fairfield police are now trying to take away the business license and closed down the shop. the field gift shop has 15 days to appeal the process. >> san francisco's aquarium of the bay has been stripped of its accreditation. the association of zoos and aquariums are says the san francisco aquarium on the pier. 39 there by fisherman's wharf does not meet standards and financial stability or staffing or employee morale turnover. the aquarium now has until june 13th to appeal the commission's decision. a spokesperson for the aca says

the aquarium has had several chances to supply evidence of progress in these areas. the fda says it will. welcome back the aquarium if these changes are made. the only trauma center in east san jose could shut down this summer. the san jose regional medical center announced the closure earlier this year and community advocates say it will take some residents. >> 20 to 30 minutes longer to go to a hospital. if they have a stroke or heart attack kron four's jack moment reports. >> i'm proud to stand firm and our request for attorney general rob bonta to launch a full investigation and to the recently announced closure outside san jose's regional medical center. friday, local advocates and city leaders say they're angry. it's time for the community to take action. said as a council member, peter ortiz represents the area with the medical center is. >> he says east side's access to this hospital saved his mom's life. she survived.

>> heart attack last year. >> he's part of the coalition whose requesting california's attorney general to investigate hca healthcare, a for-profit health care operator which owns the hospital. hca, meantime, says it's eastside trauma center shutting down partly due to fewer people using it. it's also set to slow down its stroke care unit. this closure is based on one goal. >> more profits for their shareholders, but local leaders say they just don't buy it like single mom. jessica dean i've had to use it once myself for my son. >> and once for my father-in-law, he went there with a heart attack. their lives were saved. she says if the trauma center wasn't there, it may have been a different story. somebody can die in that time that they could have already been connected to something in the trauma center. you know, hca sent kron 4 statement that says regional medical center is disappointed by the actions of certain officials and activists. it goes on to say we have been working

diligently with santa clara county leaders to ensure the long-term well-being of our community's health where we're going. but for jessica, she's not planning on stopping anytime soon, says organization, latinos, contra cancer, believes the closure is discriminatory. like we're just as important as everybody else. so i feel like we should have equal, you know, access or you know, to a trauma center just like everyone else. and if nothing is done to prevent the closure of the sites in those days, only trauma center, close date is set for august 12. >> reporting in the side. san jose jack moment kron 4 news. >> kron 4 is celebrating api heritage month and celebrations of all kinds are happening across the bay area, including a culinary extravaganza in san francisco. this weekend is the chow fun event and dozens of delicious local restaurants in the excelsior and ocean view. our said heights ingleside neighborhoods are taking part. the organizers shared the significance of having the event in that part of san

>> remembered a cut. they mustn't game original style. a new store is coming to san francisco's union square. nintendo has announced they'll be opening a new store downtown. and of course, this comes as other major retailers have done the opposite close up shop move out of town. kron four's. rob nesbitt has the story. >> the video games of the 10 do spend multiple generations fun for kids of today and the stealth jet for adults who grew up playing on friday announced that they will be opening a new store. san francisco being the lucky location. what i heard the news this morning, you know, jumping up and down. san francisco mayoral candidate. aaron peskin is the supervisor for the district where union square is located and women plans on opening its new store. the company says it will be a place for a wide range of visitors to experience the world amid its

will be nintendo second official store in the u.s. joining the first located in new york city. it's scheduled to open in 2025. in san francisco, rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> before you head to the beach this holiday weekend. there's a warning about a popular spot on the peninsula. the surfrider foundation has released its list of the top 10 locations with the highest bacterial levels in the water. linda mar beach in pacifica reportedly has a 54% bacteria right? the foundation which focuses on improving coastal water quality around the world released its report saying water quality conditions could be putting public health at risk. >> what you want to do is you want to check local water quality reports before you get into the water. we the surfrider foundation posts are water results on instagram, facebook and online. you can find or not this information, sir. fred, a downward but also pay attention to swim advisories and avoid swimming right after it rains. i don't swim or surf near a creek such

more that on the way overnight tonight. in fact, forecast models showing some of the cloud cover really kind of filling in tonight into early tomorrow morning. you see the green there. that's models picking up a little patchy drizzle out there, too. as we head through the morning, though, that will begin to break up late today. hopefully squeeze some sunshine, although probably expect a couple lingering clouds along the coastline. all that being said it is going to be a rather cool start to the holiday weekend. temperatures downtown san francisco, probably some mid 50's there. it will be breezy again in the afternoon. maybe not quite as windy as today, but still some wind gusts over 20 miles an hour along the coastline. 50's there yet. and some patchy drizzle late tonight early tomorrow morning. you get inside the you'll find more sunshine and how about 59 degrees in millbrae 60 degrees in burlingame. you go down the peninsula. those temperatures still really mild for this time of year. some places actually kind of cool outside as we head toward tomorrow afternoon, south bay, where they just have some 80's couple days ago. now we're talking 60's in the santa clara valley for highs. really just some mild temperatures there still find some warmer

weather, the well inland 60's in the and do a little more. and in the dublin 65 degrees in the san ramon, maybe 71. if we're lucky brentwood and 71. also discovery bay and you'll feel that delta breeze working his way right through benicia by tomorrow afternoon. but 70 in fairfield back toward the coastline. keeping on the cool side with that patchy fog. but overall looks like the pattern going start to improve to all be the coolest day of the weekend will begin warming up a little less fog and cloud cover on sunday. i think as we head toward memorial day of some of temperatures make it near 80 degrees by the afternoon. then cool back down the following tuesday and wednesday. but yeah, i don't know what to do tomorrow. maybe a little surf. swim, not everything. you'd bottle rock. >> i mean, there's a lot going even with the cloudy start carting all happening in san francisco this weekend, too. so >> you know, holiday weekend talked here we go. i mean, you cool start but seems like it's going and well, i'm trying to pace myself for this whole weekend. so it's a big weekend to see what you guys call it.
