francisco is honoring our service men and women today. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> good morning. thank you so much for being here and joining us here on the kron 4 morning news. i'm stephanie lin. it's saturday. may the 25th. let's get your day started with a look at the weather with dave sphar i good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. and starting things off. it looks like we're back tracking into spring even though we're in unofficial start of summer can take us a while to start really feeling like that yet again. >> but for today, we do have that fog cloudiness right around the immediate bay and its snuck into some of the valleys inland to now, that's should on balance mix out for most locations will be a little stubborn at the coast. and that's a stubborn right now, as you can see, the east bay shoreline. but this will probably parse away long before leave you today. here's a look at our satellite picture in most of the major traffic is out to sea. can't quite make it out. but there's a little low kind of upstairs.

it's driving enough that provides that lift. so that keeps the marine layer kind of all strong and all. but it does provide us with cooling. remember, we like these things in july. in august, we got taken out onshore winds in place. you can see that will be the story over the next couple of days. temperature check for you. most readings in the middle 50's some lower 50's up north and along the coast. but that puts us a couple degrees ahead. will probably be sliding, though, all this morning as trail for more numbers from yesterday. 58 by 11 o'clock still fighting quite a bit of this fog clouds, particularly around the bay. 63, with a mixed bag of sun and clouds for the bay will say and probably more mostly sunny. well inland. more your forecast coming up. all right, dave, thank you. >> the only trauma center east san jose could shut down this summer as kron four's. jeff moment reports, community leaders are now asking the state's attorney general to investigate the hospitals. leadership. >> residents here in east side, san jose called the potential closure of the only

trauma center in the area, a life or death decision. and now city leaders along with residents here penned a letter to california's top cop. the attorney general's office asking them to investigate the owners of this hospital. >> i'm proud to stand firm in our request for attorney general rob bonta to launch a full investigation and to the recently announced closure outside the medical center friday. local advocates and city leaders say they're angry. it's time for the community to take action. >> the people of east san jose refused to wait. san jose councilmember peter ortiz represents the area where the medical center is. >> he says the site's access to this hospital saved his mom's life. she survived. >> heart attack last year. >> he's part of the coalition whose requesting california's attorney general to investigate hca healthcare, a for-profit health care operator which owns the hospital. hca, meantime, says it's eastside trauma center shutting down partly due to fewer people using it. it's

also set to slow down its stroke care unit. this closure is based on one goal. >> more profits for their shareholders, but local leaders say they just don't buy it like single mom. jessica did. justin who says her family has had to depend on the trauma i've had to use it once myself for my son. >> and once for my father-in-law, he went there with a heart attack. their lives were saved. she says if the trauma center wasn't there, it may have been a different story. somebody can die in that time that they could have already been connected to something in the trauma center. you know, hca sent kron 4 statement that says regional medical center is disappointed by the actions of certain officials and activists. it goes on to say we have been working diligently with santa clara county leaders to ensure the long-term well-being of our community's health where we're going. but for jessica, she's not planning on stopping anytime soon, says organization, latinos, contra cancer, believes the closure is discriminatory. kind of like an attack on side of, you

know, on our side of san jose. >> like we're just as important as everybody else. so i feel like we should have equal, you know, access or you know, to a trauma center just like everyone else. and if nothing is done to prevent the closure of the sites in those days, only trauma center, close date is set for august. 12th reporting in east side, san jose. jackie moment kron 4 news. >> we're going to have to move on to our next story here of proper to move forward a bit. happening today and the more in honor of memorial day weekend, the bay area community plans to celebrate our country service men and women that have fallen protecting our freedoms. oprah's tiffany justice is live for us now at golden gate national cemetery with more what's planned there. good morning to to think. >> good morning, stephanie. s for over 70 years scouts from all over the country have been helping to honor our fallen soldiers by decorating graves on more day weekend by placing

the american flag. so we want to talk more about what's happening around the bay area. the golden gate national cemetery will have a local scouts doing this today. the cemetery is the final resting place for 15 medal of honor recipients. this is a service project that started back in 1949. with the greater st. louis council that decorated 190,000 graves at jefferson barracks national cemetery with miniature u.s. flags. and ever since it has become one of the largest service projects in the country each year scouts counters veterans and other members of the community gather from all over the bay area to pay tribute to the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country. so today groups will start gathering already seen a handful scouts up bright and early this morning. we'll start gathering. doby had handle a gun a group of flags that they'll start placing on the graves. i'll have more on this throughout the morning. back to studio. >> all right, tiffany, thank you for that. now, the 2

incidents that forced shutdowns on major highways in the bay area friday, the first fire that engulfed a big rig on the bay bridge. let's take a look at that. >> now this happened on the upper deck of the bridge just east of treasure island. the crash forced westbound lanes to close for hours. drivers coming from the east bay told us it took them more than an hour just to get through the year. but when a tunnel, the big rig was carrying produce at the time it caught on fire. investigators are still trying to figure out how this blaze started. and in san jose all lanes are back open on southbound 101, after a deadly crash that killed 100 gallons of fuel on the roadway. this happened just north of blossom hill road friday afternoon. investigators say a wrong-way driver crashed into a big rig. they say the driver was thsown from his car and died at the scene. the driver of the big rig was not hurt. a motorcyclist is in the hospital after getting hit by a muni bus. it happened in the outer richmond area at the intersection of balboa and

44th avenue. officers believe the man ran a stop sign when he was hit by the bus. the bus ran over is lay. police say he is expected to survive. no one on the bus was hurt. have banned them. and like after that, as you see, everyone started running. the search for suspects involved in a high school graduation shooting continues this morning. it happened at skyline in oakland. police say a fight broke out in the parking lot with several suspects firing guns. they say 3 people were shot. all are expected to survive. police arrested a san jose man in connection to the death of his mother. police say they found a woman's body in a home on shadow dance drive near highway 87. her son was booked into jail as detectives continue to investigate san jose police continue their investigation this morning into a shooting in the bay view. we know at least one officer fired their gun citizen video shows heavy police presence around genting street and caroll avenue

thursday night officers got a report of someone with a rifle. when police arrived, they found the suspect and one officer fired their gun. the suspect was not shot but was taken to a hospital for non life-threatening injuries. the police investigation continues this morning into a san francisco hit and run involving a commercial truck. it happened yesterday afternoon in the city's tenderloin area around ellis and joan streets. the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with police. and faces up to 5 years in state prison after he was convicted of molesting a 16 year-old girl on a muni train. prosecutors say the man molested the teen last may on the jay church line while she was coming home from school. a jury found the man guilty this week. his sentencing is scheduled for june 5th. coming up on the kron 4 morning news. a new law allows arizona doctors to come to california to perform abortions temporarily. plus. we're

>> all right, taking a live look outside at golden gate bridge at the golden gate bridge this saturday morning, looking quite damp out there overcast as well. day. >> the fog is going, hey, guess what, on hanging around town this weekend? yeah, good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. but a different perspective for you. this is from our mount tam picture. and there you have the layer of cloud cover, fog, marine layer, whatever you want to call it right there and right above it. what's going on, drier air, little warmer. but the key issue is much drier, too. so we need to get again a little mixing going on here in peel. the sway of could be some problem areas. this afternoon. we'll point those out to you in just a bit. but that's a general scenario with the we're in a letter to slap on top of us this little low. that's upstairs. we like these guys in july in august because it provides nice blue skies. you saw above. but this time if year we have the thicker fog

at the deal with mid-fifties right now for the east bay. 59 for san jose. 51 san francisco. 52 half moon bay lower 50's hanging up north. back to our future cast here with that marine layer. look at the roadway inland most pronounced, but even in the early afternoon problem areas here in the south bay, little bit off to the east bay and peninsula, those look to be the last inland areas to clear today. and that will still be in the afternoon of the coast, particularly along the peninsula. it's going to be rough going today. you're probably see clouds all day and chilly. temperatures are forecast there with the 50's in place. doesn't quite feel at all like a start to summer are getting things started on sunday morning. marine layer comes back, but it's really spilling in the monterey bay, not so much up here and that will mix out much quicker and by noon, most areas should be back into the mostly sunny mode. bumping those inland temperatures up a noticeable amount for your sunday compared to the day back to the monday. drill will do that yet again and open up the skies for your afternoon. now, meanwhile, we do have the onshore winds that brings in

the marine layer at night, not too bad there into the teens and and the lower 20's at that. and that is also helping keeping us cool over today. and also into tomorrow numbers get a little bit more pronounced in the afternoon hours, but it will be with us through monday. i did check sfo said they didn't have any delays yet. they might just change that. but for today at the coast, it's fog and chilly again. 40's prevail inland. a few clouds lingering but cool. even for the season here now for tomorrow, mostly sunny. and we'll see some afternoon clearing at the coast where it's going to be tougher going today, warmer inland with mid 70's. then for next next week, you're not going so much of a bump on temperatures on monday. it's really going to be the latter portion of the week. we'll get back in the those 80's maybe in scratching into some middle 80's at that as well. for today, we got 59 san francisco variable clouds, part of the fairest way to freeze and on balance. 62 for oakland still got those scattered clouds and then 76. meanwhile for san jose, there's the big board for you and you can see plenty of chilly numbers to be have

across the state. we cannot sit idly by children are bought and sold in california like pieces of meat and underground grocery store. that's why grove says she's been fighting to get her bill sb 1414, past from its house of origin of the state senate and get it over to the state assembly ahead to friday evening's deadline groves bill would classify the purchasing of a minor for commercial as a felony. that could increase penalties and jail time for those convicted. but to groves, great frustration. democrats on the senate public safety committee added amendments to the bill to exempt 16 17 year-olds from the legislation out of concern. some in that age range, maybe taking advantage of in lord into the purchasing of commercial notion is 16 17 year old children. >> are somehow less deserving of additional protections is absolutely absurd. stockton, democratic senator susan talamantes eggman called up members of her own party for adding in the time with us. >> protecting people who would buy. and abuse our children. i'm done.

dying and calibration >> and now that these bills passed the house of lords and they will now be up to the other house to determine whether to send them to the governor's desk reporting at the state capitol. a tonn wallace kron. 4 news. >> governor gavin newsom signed a bill into law allowing arizona doctors to come to california to perform abortions for their patients. this comes after the arizona supreme court ruled in favor of an 18 64 law banning nearly all abortions in that state. arizona lawmakers repealed the law, but the move will not take effect until the fall. in the meantime, california's new law takes effect immediately allowing licensed arizona doctors to perform abortions for their patients through the end of november. in a statement, newsom wrote, quote, california will remain a safe harbor ready to defend abortion access because we value women's health and trust women to make the most intimate decision about their bodies, health and futures. i knew featured rather called recall is coming to the next generation of windows

san francisco and los angeles with a bullet train is moving forward. the california high-speed rail authority is expected to submit final plans next month for environmental approval. the segment between palmdale and burbank is the last section that still needs clearance. it's also one of the most complex and challenging portions because crews say it requires carving out some of the longest tunnel ever constructed through mountainous terrain. and police in daly city are looking for 2 people accused of assaulting a store worker. it happened last tuesday at the smart and final store on mission in bismarck streets. investigators say the store manager stopped and asked a male and female shopper for the receipt. the pair have

been trying to leave with a cart full of merchandise. suspect then punched the manager before getting away with some candy. anyone with information is asked to please call daly city police. intel. also, police are looking for 3 people accused of stealing $30,000 worth of cigarettes from a delivery truck. it happened thursday morning at shell gas station on el camino, real and college avenue. the suspects were ski masks during the robbery. the investigation continues this morning. cheetos and other ships could soon be banned from school cafeterias. lawmakers approved a bill banning snacks with certain kinds of food. i in california schools, the bill would also ban products like froot loops. the approved bill now heads to the senate. absolutely not down anyway. that means something for the city. >> still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news, the effort to recall oakland mayor sheng thao moves forward. why organizers say they want the organizers say they want the mayor out.

morning news. the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi last year is set to be re sentenced in federal court. >> after a judge ruled that proper procedures were not followed. and experts are warning weekend travels some hazardous strict conditions towards the coast. why they say people should take caution at the beach this memorial weekend. welcome back to the kron. 4 morning news. thank you so much for joining us today. let's get you started this half hour with a look at our forecast with dave spahr

>> hey, stephanie, good morning and good morning, everybody. quite a bit of cloud cover fog clouds we have to deal with. and they're pretty pervasive there just about everywhere, if you will. and that will mix out of for the inland spots. this afternoon. however, around the bay, it's gonna be a little bit more slow going. and we see even this activity in the south bay. this is one of the places we sometimes run to get some sunshine. well, slow going this morning, as you can see, 2, this is one of our problem areas in the south bay. >> little bit around the alum and the media county and also in the southern end of the peninsula. >> for the santa cruz mountains, that's where some of this moisture is going to trap this afternoon and therefore, that's going to keep some of this cloud cover around. we're going to keep it kind of variable clouds, how it kind of phrase that on balance our onshore winds provide fresh moisture, too. but there is dry air upstairs. the will help out temperature. check for middle 50's for the east bay. we've got 52, san francisco, a half moon bay and also up north. your contrast to yesterday were a couple degrees ahead of that progress. but as you can see for the breakdown, we've got

to cloud cover even inland as we get to 11 o'clock as late as that. but by this afternoon, we should start to see some mostly sunny skies working in here again, problem areas will be parts of the east bay, south bay and the peninsula little bit more. that 4 zone forecast coming up. we'll take a look into next week, too. stephanie. dave, thank you. >> it's set to be a busy week for attorneys representing david de pap the man convicted at a federal level for attacking paul pelosi. the husband of nancy pelosi. the path is set to be re-sentenced on tuesday for his federal conviction. but at the state level, things are just getting started. kron four's. ken wayne spoke with attorney michael cardoza. what we could possibly expect. >> the judge in the federal case said she made a mistake. what happened? well, what she did was after she's sentenced a pop. she realized she didn't give him the opportunity to make a statement to the court and then federal court, i think over 80% of defendants want to say something to the court. one of the big things i

noted was that the prosecution after the case said he showed no remorse at all. and a lot of people start to giggle that that. and so we'll wait a minute. didn't give him a chance to show any remorse or to talk. so basically it's not a small point. it's not going to reverse this case. it's not going i think have much effect. i'd be shocked if the judge after listening hip-hop, if he decides to talk whether she reduces that or not. and he still has a state case which could add more prison time to what he's already. >> yeah, well, i i when i was a prosecutor a lot of state prosecutor to the case and the federal government had a case they would often times just drop in and say, ok, you've got convicted in state court or vice versa. in this case, they're not doing that. a lot of people are asking. >> not double jeopardy. you're

being tried for the same thing is really not because the state has added 4, 5 different counts. one of which is, of course, the attempted murder case and issue is, are elements to for an improving the cases in the state court in the elements are different and federal the south, the what's going on in state court. so i don't think jumper double jeopardy will hold. >> cardoza went on to say the judge in the federal case may be worried about this whole case being reversed and that's why she's pushing for re-sentencing. we'll be following both the federal and state cases on air and online kron 4 dot com. and a warning. if you're planning to hit the coast this weekend, officials say linda mar beach in pacifica has a 54 percent bacteria rate the surfrider foundation which focuses on improving coastal water. quality says that amount of bacteria could be putting public health at risk. >> what you want to do is you want to check local water quality reports before you get into the water. we the surfrider foundation posts are

water results on instagram, facebook and online. you can find or not this information, sir. fred, a downward but also pay attention to swim advisories and avoid swimming right after it rains. i don't swim or surf near a creek such as pedro creek or other outlets, where storm water drains and then important you know, you want people to rinse off with clean fresh water before you when you leave the beach. >> the surfrider foundation says they post water testing reports online every week on their website that you can check out and you can keep them in oakland, a group says they have enough signatures to force a recall of mayor sheng thao four's. dan kerman has more on that. >> the push to recall oakland mayor sheng thao is pressing forward. we are having. >> and incorrectly successful recall campaign opponents of taos say they have so far gathered more than 30,000 signatures 5,000 more than the

25,000 needed. >> to force a recall election in november, people say, well, you know, you should give them more time more time to do work. she's already almost destroyed oakland. we want to give her more time to completely destroy open. we cannot afford to do that. we cannot afford to do it. will recall backers have a laundry list of complaints. crime remains at the top of that list. but the mayor points to oakland police crime stats indicating crime is down 17% over the last 3 years down. 34 1% when you compare last year to this year in 2021. oakland had 134 homicides. >> we're now on track this year for less, for less than half of that, not only is crime down from last year. but it's down in comparison to the last several years. >> oakland. is getting back on track backers of the recall admit some crimes are down. >> they also make the claim that's because people aren't reporting crimes as much as

they used to. and because fed-up retailers have closed their stores crime absolutely not down anyway. that means something for the crime. it's not down to the way that makes feel safe. crime has not gone the way that businesses pull recall backers say they will wait until they have 40,000 signatures to file. >> since tao only received just under 40,000st choice votes in the first round of the ranked choice voting election. >> back in november of 2022. that sends the message. >> we are going to have more people signing to recall, know, voting for you to get elected in the first place. we will be calling upon her to resign if a majority of oakland residents vote in favor of recalling tau in november. >> a special election must then be scheduled. so replacement candidates can run for her seat. >> dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> santa clara county plans to spray for disease carrying mosquitoes treatment happens

around the lane near story road in fleming avenue since april. the county says it's found at least a dozen bugs from mosquito species known to carry diseases, including the zika virus and spring to start next wednesday. and next weekend, california kicks off its first ever adopt a pet day to mark the moment east bay spca hosts a community-run with shelter dogs at their dublin location. community members can enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise while helping animals in need. the event is next saturday, june first from 9 to 11:00am, and all adoption fees will be waived. if you're missing a pet care in san francisco. listen up to this. a calming colorful bird was found yesterday in the outer richmond area is not pretty and visiting from san jose says he found this bird on the street 47 avenue between balboa and he noticed the bird could not fly. so he and a friend picked up and went door to door to try and find the owner. a friendly neighbor did

is being locally driven by this upper level low that's providing the lift to bring it up in. give us this fog onshore winds in place. we've got them in the teens for the most part of they'll pick up a little bit this afternoon. most the readings are in the mid-fifties. you can see in the east bay lower 50's to the west. this probably won't change much this morning and lower 50's to middle 50's up north a little bit ahead of where we were from yesterday, but only by a degree or 2. the breakdown today has plenty of clouds to start things off by high noon. still fighting some of those fog clouds at about 60 64. so mid afternoon as temperatures even inland struggle to reach at around 70 now looks like a bit more warmer. warmer temperatures for you tomorrow and better clearing in store for us and not to shabby on monday. morning forecast coming up in a stephanie. all right, dave, thank you. >> the only trauma center in east san jose could shut down the summer as kron four's. jeff moment reports community leaders are now asking the state's attorney general to investigate the hospitals. leadership.

>> residents here in east side, san jose called the potential closure of the only trauma center in the area, a life or death decision. and now city leaders along with residents here penned a letter to california's top cop. the attorney general's office asking them to investigate the owners of this hospital. >> i'm proud to stand firm in our request for attorney general rob bonta to launch a full investigation and to the recently announced closure outside the medical center friday. local advocates and city leaders say they're angry. it's time for the community to take action. >> the people of east san jose refused to wait. san jose councilmember peter ortiz represents the area where the medical center is. >> he says the site's access to this hospital saved his mom's life. she survived. >> heart attack last year. >> he's part of a coalition whose requesting california's attorney general to investigate hca healthcare, a for-profit health care operator which owns the

hospital. hca, meantime says it's eastside trauma center shutting down partly due to fewer people using it. it's also set to slow down its stroke care unit. this closure is based on one goal. >> more profits for their shareholders, but local leaders say they just don't buy it like single mom. jessica did. justin who says her family has had to depend on the trauma i've had to use it once myself for my son. >> and once for my father-in-law, he went there with a heart attack. their lives were saved. she says if the trauma center wasn't there, it may have been a different story. somebody can die in that time that they could have already been connected to something in the trauma center. you know, hca sent kron 4 statement that says regional medical center is disappointed by the actions of certain officials and activists. it goes on to say we have been working diligently with santa clara county leaders to ensure the long-term well-being of our community's health where we're going. but for jessica, she's not planning on stopping anytime soon, says organization, latinos, contra

morning nearly 70 years scouts from all over the country have been helping to honor our fallen soldiers by decorating graves on memorial day weekend by placing the american flag. the goal gate national sarah cemetery will have local doing this today. >> this cemetery is the final resting. >> it does sound like we may be having some technical going to work on that. and as soon as that's fixed, we'll try and bring her back into the program. now, in the meantime, 2 incidents for shutdowns on major highways in the bay area friday. the first fire that engulfed a big rig on the bay bridge. let's take a look at that. this happened on the upper deck of the bridge just east of treasure island. the crash force westbound lanes to close for hours. drivers coming from the east bay told us it took them more than an hour just to get through the year. but when a tunnel, the big rig was carrying produce at the time it caught on fire. investigators are still trying to figure out how the blaze started. and in san jose all

lanes are back open on southbound 101, after a deadly crash that spilled 100 gallons of fuel on the roadway. this happened just north of blossom hill road on friday afternoon. investigators say a wrong-way driver crashed into a big rig. they say the driver was thrown from his car and died at the scene. the driver of the big rig was not hurt. a motorcyclist is in the hospital after getting hit by a muni bus. it happened in the outer richmond area at the intersection of balboa and 44th avenue. officers believe the man ran a stop sign when he was hit by the bus. the bus ran over his leg. police say he is expected to survive. no one on the bus was hurt. we ke after that, as you see, everyone started the suspect or rather the search for suspects involved a high school graduation shooting that does continue this morning. it happened at skyline in oakland. police say a fight broke out in the parking lot with several suspects firing guns. they say

at least one officer fired their gun citizen app. video shows heavy police presence around genting street and caroll avenue on thursday afternoon. officers got a report of someone with a rifle. when police arrived, they found the suspect and one officer fired their gun. the suspect was not shot, but he was taken to a hospital for non life-threatening injuries. and the police investigation continues this morning into a san francisco hit and run involving a commercial truck. it happened yesterday afternoon in the city's tenderloin area around ellison jones street. the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with police. and faces up to 5 years in state prison after he was convicted of molesting a 16 year-old girl on a muni train. prosecutors say the man molested the teen last may on the jay church line was she was coming home from school. jury found the man guilty this week. his sentencing is scheduled for june 5th. coming up on the kron 4 morning news. a new law allows arizona

we're back. good morning, everybody. live shot coming from the golden gate bridge. and you can see the fog peeling away from the surface. now building to the. >> above us to give us overcast sky conditions, flags not to particularly active, but it will be from that onshore direction. good morning, everybody. and welcome to the memorial day weekend here. a bit on the chilly side, certainly to start to warm up a little bit by the time we get to monday and inland, you'll see some warming to. but today, kind of on the cool side, just about all locations. this send it out of san jose state in the overcast skies already in place. this will take a little longer to clear. however, it looks like from the models that we're looking at going to be kind of cloudy through a good chunk of the day may be clearing out a little bit in the afternoon and one other shot for you. this is mount tam picture. you see it shaking a little bit with the winds, but it shows you right above that layer. there is the clear skies, sunny skies and

dry air, too. so we do have this big layer, nice, dry air here and stop to be that much warmer. but it's that mixing process that we have to get going now off the pacific. most of the travel west to east. we do have a high that will be building and that will provide some warming temperatures for you towards the end of the week. numbers already 60 antioch mid-fifties off to the east bay lower 50's up north and also along the coast. futurecast for here's the problem i was talking about. you see it just gets cleared out there in the south a little bit around the santa cruz mountains get snagged mid afternoon. so takes it just about all day to do this. and boom comes back again for tonight. not the great coverage that we have this morning. and that should settled. little clear, clear, a quicker. so today's the day to have to negotiate through this kind of fog bank a little bit in places that don't normally or aren't as intrusive as we're seeing today. now behind all tf this, this is again at the surface. now. but look at this coverage area. we have these high humidity levels showing how far that bree lerta spilled into the inland locations and throughout the day today.

for san francisco in t%e next few days. there's a nice improvement for you. getting to close to 80. it looks like for memorial day and that warming trend will continue into next week. i'll have that longer range forecast for stephanie. dave, thank you. >> it's set to be a busy week for attorneys representing david de pap the man convicted at a federal level of attacking paul pelosi. the husband of nancy pelosi. the path is set to be re-sentenced on thursday for his federal conviction. but at the state level, things are just getting started. kron four's ken wy spoke with attorney michael cardoza on what we could possibly expect. >> the judge in the federal case said she made a mistake. what happened? well, what she did was after she's sentenced a pop. she realized she didn't give him the opportunity to make a statement to the court and then federal court, i think over 80% of defendants want to say something to the court. one of the big things i noted was that the prosecution after the case said he showed no remorse at all. and a lot

of people start to giggle that that. and so we'll wait a minute. didn't give him a chance to show any remorse or to talk. so basically it's not a small point. it's not going to reverse this case. it's not going i think have much effect. i'd be shocked if the judge after listening hip-hop, if he decides to talk whether she reduces that or not. and he still has a state case which could add more prison time to what he's already. >> yeah, well, i i when i was a prosecutor a lot of if. state prosecutor to the case and the federal government had a case they would often times just drop in and say, ok, you've got convicted in state court or vice versa. in this case, they're not doing that. a lot of people are asking. >> well, it's not double jeopardy. you're being tried for the same thing is really not because the state has added 4, 5 different counts.

kron. 4 morning news at >> good morning. thank you so much for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. >> i'm stephanie lin. it's saturday. may the 25th. let's get you started with a look at the weather with dave spahr. need a a good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. in our start of the holiday weekend here, i know in a very much of a foggy cloudy we have to care that fog and cloud cover. first things first. >> that will happen is you'd expected inland, but we're seeing much better clearing in the north bay from the very beginning. the problem areas will be down south and the south bay, you probably won't get some clearing happening until maybe around noon this afternoon. here's a shot of the east bay shoreline. we're finally starting to improve here. but we have to lift that fog and then get rid of it entirely. not just make overcast. traffic in the pacific, that states all towards our north will be high pressure zone. that will be more of a player in our forecast later in the week. and yes, that means temperatures will be bumping up lot of 50's for the east bay. 61, san jose, 60 for antioch. but the 50's prevail in the north bay and lower

50's san francisco. also for half moon bay comparison to yesterday were close. a couple degrees ahead. still for much of the breath of the bay, little cooler in some spots. so you can see up north. so lets try about 61 at 1 o'clock again. still working on this fog cloudiness. 65 or so by 4 o'clock, there are spots inland that will never even see 70 degrees today will probably do it by tomorrow. now, again, nice of a warm-up in store for you this week ahead. and we will see the 80's return. even the mid 80's by thursday friday. more on that longer range forecast. coming up, stephanie. >> dave, thank you. the only trauma center in east san jose could shut down the summer as kron four's. jeff moment reports community leaders are now asking the state's attorney general to investigate the hospitals. leadership. >> well, residents here in east side, san jose called the potential closure of the only trauma center in the area, a life or death decision. and now city leaders along with residents here penned a letter to california's top cop, the attorney general's office

asking them to investigate the owners of this hospital. >> i'm proud to stand firm in our request for attorney general rob bonta to launch a full investigation and to the recently announced closure outside the medical center friday, local advocates and city leaders say they're angry. it's time for the community to take action. >> the people of east san jose refused to wait. san jose councilmember peter ortiz represents the area where the medical center is. >> he says the site's access to this hospital saved his mom's life. she survived. >> heart attack last year. >> he's part of the coalition whose requesting california's attorney general to investigate hca healthcare, a for-profit health care operator which owns the hospital. hca, meantime, says it's eastside trauma center shutting dowl partly due to fewer people using it. it's also set to slow down its stroke care unit. this closure is based on one goal. >> more profits for their shareholders, but local

leaders say they just don't buy it like single mom. jessica did. justin who says her family has had to depend on the trauma i've had to use it once myself for my son. >> and once for my father-in-law, he went there with a heart attack. their lives were saved. she says if the trauma center wasn't there, it may have been a different story. somebody can die in that time that they could have already been connected to something in the trauma center. you know, hca sent kron 4 statement that says regional medical center is disappointed by the actions of certain officials and activists. it goes on to say we have been working diligently with santa clara county leaders to ensure the long-term well-being of our community's health where we're going. but for jessica, she's not planning on stopping anytime soon, says her organization, latinos, contra cancer, believes the closure is discriminatory. kind of like an attack on side of. >> you know, on our side of san jose. like we're just as important as everybody else. so i feel like we should have equal, you know, access or you

know, to a trauma center just like everyone else. and if nothing is done to prevent the closure of eastside san jose's only trauma center, close date is set for august 12. >> reporting in east side, san jose. jackie moment kron 4 news. >> happening today, this memorial day weekend, a number of bay area events on our country service men and women from forced to justice is live for us now at golden gate national cemetery with a look of what's planned out there. good morning to tiffany. >> good morning, stephanie. yes, this is a pretty large cemetery. there's a lot of ground to cover. the scouts are out and they've already started placing implanting the flags. you can see khan gum bi this area right behind us right behind over the 70 years for over 70 years, the scouts around the country have been helping to honor our country's fallen soldiers by decorating graves on memorial day weekend by placing those american flags. the golden gate national cemetery. have local

scouts doing this today. this cemetery is the final resting place for 15 medal of honor recipients. this is a service project that started back in 1949. with the greater st. louis council that decorated 190,000 gray's that jefferson barracks national cemetery with miniature u.s. flags and ever since has become one of the largest service projects in the country. each year scouts scattered veterans and other members of the community gather from all over the bay area to pay tribute to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country. we spoke with members of the rotary belmont redwood shores, rotary club this morning out here volunteering as well. there's 10 of us coming from our club alone. it's a chance to do we seen the flags out here, but never. >> actually participated in because it's touching. it's really touching. feel like i'm doing something good. the weekend means real. i take it

hours. drivers coming from the east bay told us it took them more than an hour just to get through the year. but when a tunnel, the big rig was carrying produce at the time of the fire. investigators are still trying to figure out how that fire started. in san jose. all lanes are back open on southbound 101. after a deadly crash that killed 100 gallons of fuel on the roadway. this happened just north of blossom hill road friday afternoon. investigators say a wrong-way driver crashed into a big rig. they say the driver was thrown from his car and died at the scene. the driver of the big rig was not hurt. a motorcyclist is in the hospital after getting hit by a muni bus that happened in the outer richmond area at the intersection of elbow and 44th avenue. officers believe the man ran a stop sign when he was hit by the bus. the bus ran over his leg. police say he is expected to survive. no one on the bus was hurt. have banned them. and like after that, as you see, everyone started running. the search for suspects involved in a

high school graduation shooting continues this morning. it happened at skyline in oakland. police say a fight broke out in the parking lot with several suspects firing guns. they say 3 people were shot. all are expected to survive. police arrested a san jose man in connection to the death of his mother. police say they found a woman's body in a home on shadow dance drive near highway 87. her son was booked into jail as detectives continue to investigate san francisco police continue their investigation this morning into a shooting in the bay view. we know at least one officer fired their gun citizen app. video shows heavy police presence around jennings street and caroll avenue thursday afternoon. officers got a report of someone with a rifle. when police arrived, they found the suspect and one officer fired their gun. the suspect was not shot was taken to a hospital for non life-threatening injuries. the police investigation continues this morning into a san francisco

hit and run involving a commercial truck. it happened yesterday afternoon in the city's tenderloin area around ellison jones streets. the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with police. i faces up to 5 years in state prison after he was convicted of molesting a 16 year-old girl on a muni train. prosecutors say the man molested the teen last may on the jay church line when she was coming home from school. a jury found the man guilty this week. his sentencing is scheduled for the 5th. coming up on the kron. 4 morning news. a new law allows arizona doctors to come to california to perform abortions temporarily. >> plus. >> we're taking a closer look at the new windows feature that remembers everything you do on your computer. will it protect your privacy? i'm rich demuro. that's coming up rich on tech. >> slow going today because of all those fog clouds lingering later in the morning hours inland even looks like about 61 or so by 1 o'clock. still

day. but think i know looks like the skies angry. it's just the fog coming by. that's all it is. lifted up above us. so now we have. >> the overcast, the ground fog part of it seems to be taken care of. so we're getting that part of the mixing isn't right above us is dry air. good morning, everybody. and this is the shot in the east bay shoreline. still some ground fog kind of hanging out from this perspective. don't forget up in the hills. we're a little bit higher up. but still that just gives overcast. we need to kind of eat away at some of those fog clouds today got 50's for most of the east bay, 60 for any act 50's. meanwhile, up north, 52 san francisco with 61, san jose. so just to give you an idea about the slow progress here, some stubborn areas here in the south bay, santa cruz mountains. but how some of the cloud cover lingering into the afternoon. we'll get some sun by that point. temperatures very reduced everywhere. here comes that fog back again, its coverage area, maybe not as dense tomorrow morning, mixing a little quicker as you can see there. but we even do this program again. it looks like into your monday the impact of the temperatures are more

parents who were getting really more so then in the mountains, the traffic from the pacific is a west to east travel. ultimately a high will be building here. that will give us a bit of extra on for those temperatures, particularly by the latter portion of the week. now, another climate control. we have, course, the onshore winds that continues pretty and interfered with for the you know, couple days they'll kind become more pronounced or in the afternoon both today and tomorrow. a look ahead. still battling fog at sfo to at the coast. fog and shelley, those temperatures will be the 50's all day today inland a few clouds and cold. we mean sub 70 for a good chunk of those inland regions popping into the 70's. it looks like as early as tomorrow, which will be much warmer tomorrow for them. mostly sunny, with some coastal clearing going on. it looks like in the afternoon to you look out there. but again, warmer inland with mid 70's and we'll get you into the 80's. it looks like inland by maybe wednesday, thursday in middle 80's at-bats. so summer is just delayed, even though we're not really going to be

back to the kron. 4 morning news. thank you so much for joining us at 9.28. today. let's get you started this half hour with a look at our forecast. and dave, off to a bit of a chilly start, at least in san francisco. yeah. a lot of fog. we have contend with, too, which is going giving us overcast sky conditions as well. by the way, sfo looking for about an hour delay. >> and all of this going through some of the fog as we can see right now from our shots of the east bay shoreline. still kind of that overcast, a position here. and that's what we're going to stay in the bay area until we get to maybe around noon or so. onshore winds is what we've got going on here. you can see the arrows pointing in the direction that will be the case. it looks like through much of the day for today. most of our readings are in their upper 50's. 62 going on for antioch up in the north bay. we have lower to middle 50's lower 50's hang in there for a san francisco half moon bay. 61 for san jose which side note there that can take a while for that to cloud cover to clear by contrast to 24 hours ago or a little chilly up north. and this is

the state level, things are just getting started. kron four's when ken wayne spoke with attorney michael cardoza. what we can potentially expect. >> the judge in the federal case said she made a mistake. what happened? well, what she did was after she's sentenced the pop. she realized she didn't give him the opportunity to make a statement to the court and then federal court, i think over 80% of defendants want to say something to the court. one of the big things i noted was that the prosecution after the case said he showed no remorse at all. and a lot of people start to giggle that that. and so we'll wait a minute. didn't give him a chance to show any remorse or to talk. so basically it's not a small point. it's not going to reverse this case. it's not going i think have much effect. i'd be shocked if the judge after listening hip-hop, if he decides to talk whether

she reduces that or not. and he still has a state case which could add more prison time to what he's already. >> yeah, well, i i when i was a prosecutor a lot of state prosecutor to the case and the federal government had a case they would often times just drop in and say, ok, you've got convicted in state court or vice versa. in this case, they're not doing that. a lot of people are asking. >> well, not double jeopardy. you're being tried for the same thing is really not because the state has added 4, 5 different counts. one of which is, of course, the attempted murder case and issue is, are elements to for an improving the cases in the state court in the elements are different and federal the south, the what's going on in state court. so i don't think jumper double jeopardy will hold. >> and we continue to follow both the federal and state cases on air and online kron 4 dot com. a warning. if you're

four's. dan kerman reports. >> the push to recall oakland mayor sheng thao is pressing forward. we are having. >> and incorrectly successful recall campaign opponents of taos say they have so far gathered more than 30,000 signatures 5,000 more than the 25,000 needed. >> to force a recall election in november, people say, well, you know, you should give them more time more time to do work. she's already almost destroyed oakland. we want to give her more time to completely destroy open. we cannot afford to do that. we cannot afford to do it. will recall backers have a laundry list of complaints. crime remains at the top of that list. but the mayor points to oakland police crime stats indicating crime is down 17% over the last 3 years down. 34 1% when you compare last year to this year in 2021. oakland had 134 homicides. >> we're now on track this year for less, for less than

half of that, not only is crime down from last year. but it's down in comparison to the last several years. >> oakland. is getting back on track while backers of the recall admit some crimes are down. >> they also make the claim that's because people aren't reporting crimes as much as they used to. and because fed-up retailers have closed their stores crime absolutely not down anyway. that means something for the crime. it's not down to the way that makes feel safe. crime has not gone the way that businesses pull recall backers say they will wait until they have 40,000 signatures to file. >> since tao only received just under 40,000st choice votes in the first round of the ranked choice voting election. >> back in november of 2022. that sends the message. >> we are going to have more people signing to recall, voting for you to get elected in the first place. we will be
