into the air. good evening and thank you for joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. i'm dan thorn oakland, firefighters battling that giant fire tonight off of high street. more than 70 fire crews rushing to economy, lumber as flames were seen roaring off of the lumberyard building. you can see in this video here, firefighters attacking it from multiple angles. calls were coming in tonight reporting that this fire. happened just before 8 o'clock. but by the time firefighters arrived, this building was already engulfed in flames. >> we just heard a bunch of people coming into the gas station there there's a big fire. you guys he was going he is going to close. i go outside. it's just smoke first. and then 2 minutes later, the flames erupted from the roof. chaos. it's crazy. >> some people are saying that could have been well, most people, but we're going do what it could railroad tracks. definitely is not the first time we've had fires around here, especially in this area. so there's been fires here before. but nothing of this kind really this 32 about the

whole business has never been like this before. >> fire officials say the nearby residents should be closing doors and windows, prevent smoke exposure. railroad traffic has been closed as the tracks are right there by that fire that's burning. firefighters say they will remain on scene throughout the night. we will, of course, give you the latest on air and online at kron 4 dot com. we have a sad update tonight after a deadly crash last night on highway one in san mateo county. we're now learning the victim was 28 year-old joaquin dominic jimenez, alvarado the son of half moon bay, mayor joaquin jimenez tonight, friends and family gathering to remember joaquin kron four's jack moment has the story. >> well, here at this are on a road right off california highway one. you see people still in shock trying to just come to terms with this loss, but they are grieving. meantime, earlier today we did see several people, including family, friends of the hop of a mayor he says he will be

>> and marin bochy ball tournament continued today after a person was shot oupside the facility. the chaos shaking up a quiet sandra fell neighborhood yesterday afternoon. workers at marine bochy tell us at least 6 cars most belonging to the players were damaged after a shooting broke out at the intersection of ross and e streets as the game was going on. workers say 2 guys got out of a car and fired shots at other people nearby. police say one person was shot in the stomach and they were taken to the hospital. that victim is expected to survive. the investigation is ongoing. in san francisco neighborhood comes together in support of a dog walker who lost his home in a fire after receiving several races threats. >> outlook in a always want to have to go some like it happened. so to see it happening now as the bus that occurs, but believes were here now like that. >> terry williams was meeting with a member of mayor breed's office last week when his home

on grove street near the painted ladies caught on fire williams is discussing ways to address repeated racist threat. he's interred in recent months. then sudden news of the fire and it's still not clear how it started. williams says he was devastated at first, but today he says he feels an abundance of love and support from the community. >> so completely outrageous what's happened to terry and his family and then for them suffer you know, horrible fire. on top of that. i think everyone just feels, but want to help. and that's what you see. that's easy with thousands of dollars rolling into gofundme. people dropping off people just coming together and let tearing his family know that they're loved and the and supported. and it's amazing to so many community members out he is always looking out for everybody in the neighborhood. he's just an awesome this is all devastating to everything.

have that sea breeze over at point rays at 25 miles per hour, 60 miles per hour in san francisco, 17 in fairfield, so relatively breezy at this time. but you can see we are in this quiet pattern that we have been over the last couple of days, memorial day monday looks very nice. another warm day, very similar to today with the 70's and 80's inland 60's 70's by the bay. the coastal will remain unseasonably low in the 50's and 60's. back to you. >> all right. thanks a lot. 50 people had to be evacuated from a senior care facility in oakley today. firefighters shut down the building because of a hazmat situation. take a look. this is what they found. firefighters say the water in the bath tub. they're overflowed through the walls, soaking the building's electrical unit. this is discovered after the water caused several residents to be trapped in an elevator by shorting out the circuits. the residents have now been relocated until. >> all the repairs are done. >> that in extra oxygen i will be in shape.

>> because, you know, and >> firefighters say though, water source is a sewage leak from the second floor electrical room and they called hazmat to determine what it is. carnival took over the streets of san francisco today. the grand parade started around 9 in the morning and covered 20 blocks of the mission district. more than 3,000 artists were honoring their heritage. some from brazil, mexico, panama, and many more. >> we bring from all over the bay area from the northern part of california, southern around the world that come celebrate this carnival. so 3,000 art is dividing to about 70 different dance truth. some have 30 dancers and some have 402. you're going to see this. plethora of diversity. >> the festival also had more than 400 vendors throughout the mission district. happening now, the bottle rock music festival wrapping up in napa tonight. ed sheeran is the final headline. performer.

>> bay area residents are remembering the people killed in a mass shooting 3 years ago. vta railyard in san jose, a gunman shot and killed 9 workers and then took his own life. kron four's justine waltman looks back. >> a 57 year-old disgruntled vta employee gunned down 9 of his co-workers at the guadalupe light. yeah, rail yard before turning the gun on himself at the time the shooter was the subject of investigations into his workplace conduct. may 26 will forever be known as a day of remembrance in san jose. the building where most of the victims were shot to death has now been demolished. and 8 of

the 9 victims families reached an 8 million dollar lawsuit against the vta. they also are getting workers compensation benefits, pension and pre retirement death benefits. but they also agreed to withdraw what wrong full death lawsuits against the vta. may their memories be a blessing for the newsroom. i'm justine waldman. kron. 4 news. >> this week convicted killer scott peterson's defense team is trying to get a new trial by gathering new evidence. but the stanislaus county district attorney's office is opposing the motion de los angeles innocence project is representing peterson and they want to dna test a rope and a stolen van that was burned near the petersons home around the time that his wife laci went missing. the da's office is asking a judge to deny the motion because all the evidence that was previously used to convict peterson in 2004 peterson will appear in court via zoom on tuesday. powerful storms across texas, oklahoma and arkansas killing

at least 15 people overnight. video showing just some of the destruction left behind after a tornado plowed through cook county, texas, near the oklahoma border. texas governor greg abbott confirming at least 100 are hurt and nearly 400 homes have been damaged. this deadly storm touched down near a mobile home park, killing 7, including a 2 and a 5 year-old the severe weather coming in so quickly that 50 people had to ride out the storm and a texas truck stop bathroom. the storm searing the shearing be roof and walls off of the building. oklahoma, at least 2 people were killed. multiple others were hurt after a poor powerful storm swept through that area. >> there was an outdoor wedding that was going on at the time. in arkansas. 5 people killed in the severe weather, including a 26 year-old woman who was found dead outside of a destroyed home. you can see just some of the damage here and the storm threats are not over tonight, more than 110 million

americans broader threat of large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes. and that's one in 3 americans. let's check in now with kron four's gayle ong for a little bit more on the weather. >> yes, it is a peak tornado season in the midwest and the south and we're entering the first a day of hurricane next saturday, june 1st so it's going to some active weather. we have. you can see there's some active weather here in the midwest. we do have tornado watches in place in parts of over by memphis tennessee over here. so nashville, clark, school franklin, those areas under a tornado watch until 05:00am so very active. severe weather back here. it's just quiet here and we don't have a lot going on and on the west coast. so here's tahoe. if you're heading out for the holiday 70's for you, mostly sunny skies through wednesday and we will be warming up here in the bay area as well. cloudy conditions at the coast of that's that usual summer, like set up it. i sit is the

unofficial start of summer this weekend. and with that, we always see the clouds by the coast and it will be stretching to our valleys and parts of the north bay, too, as well and the east bay. so now stick around. but by the morning and af ernoon that will mix out and we'll see the sun come out again with partly cloudy skies over by the coast as well towards the evening. and then it comes right back overnight into the morning. we will have a upper 40's and low 50's for our overnight lows and warming up tomorrow. we do have pleasant weather. we're going to be pretty cool over by the coast in the 50's. so the bay-area microclimates there for you, 70's over by the bay and 80's low 80's over by our inland communities. so mostly sunny skies that you will see those clouds over by the coast as what we have been seeing. here is a look at your 7 day outlook, upper 70's mid 70's and we will be gradually warming up starting midweek and friday we could see 90's inland. so it looks like we'll a slight heat risk at the end of the week. but everywhere else, the bay and the coast

california is now trying pilot program which would issue a road charge to californians drive california's drivers based on how many miles they drive instead of how much gas they purchase gas tax revenues are expected to decrease is state laws requiring more electric vehicles to reduce emissions and gas taxes help cover the costs for road maintenance. some market analysts say they worry that gps tracking will be required to help calculate the tax charges, which could lead to

10 in the south bay. a 25 year-old accused of punching an elderly man in the stomach and then posing for a picture has been arrested. camera. police say they've been looking for the suspect for weeks. kron four's sara stinson reports. >> campbell, police say this video led to the arrest of a 25 year-old man accused of punching 2 elderly men in the last month. the first attack happened on may 4th. police say nicholas host was walking on santa moscow, keno road and punched an elderly man in the stomach whose daughter ran away. the victim followed after and got a photo of him.

police posted this video on may 17th asking the public for help identifying him and it worked the next day. investigators got his name, but they were not able to contact hosted or police say 75 year-old man was punched in the face on inwood drive-in elam avenue on friday. police say they learned host was the suspect in both attacks. on saturday. police contacted his parents and arrested him at their home. who stutter has been charged with 2 counts of elder abuse and for battery of an officer. police say he kicked an officer while being booked into jail. the 25 year olds. parents home is just a few houses down from the victim of friday's attack. kron 4 spoke with a relative of the victim. they said he's still recovering and they're not quite ready to talk about what happened. another neighbor who wants to remain anonymous says this is sad for everyone involved. i feel sorry. >> for both sides, it's not like all. this is just kids.

just a terrible not a terrible katie's just as he just has. he's a kid with mental and the victim, you know, as an elderly man. so i feel sorry for him. i'm sure they want. from their side. they want justice to. course, i stopped by the who said her family's home to see if they had a response to all of this. but no one answered the door. when i knock someone did drive by me and say they went to school with the 25 year-old back in the day and they were sad to hear this news. >> i'm sara stinson reporting in campbell kron. 4 news. >> in the north bay, one person was injured in a fire at a mobile home in blaine home as fire broke out this afternoon and carolina. i'm a street just blocks away from the solano county superior court. firefighters say one person was inside when the flames broke out, the victim was removed and is now in critical condition at the hospital. no word yet on how this fire started. deputies in stanislaus county continuing the search for a man who went missing in the woodward reservoir today. according to

the stanislaus county sheriff's office. a 22 year-old man and his friend were swimming across the channel near mountain dew point. when they both got tired. that's when the victim began struggling to swim, went under water and never resurfaced. the dive team and other rescue personnel are still searching those waters tonight. authorities in san joaquin county are continuing to search for a boater from who is missing in the san joaquin river. according to the sheriff's office to boaters, went into the water early thursday morning after the boat flipped over one of the victims swam to the riverbank. the other stayed back and has not been seen since search teams have been out on the water the past few days using remote-controlled robots in the river searching for that man. in the meantime, the man siblings are holding out hope that their brother will be found. we from that. >> they a bubble milk a year. and this is the of do that to everybody you. that's the kid.

there. and then it comes back in the evening back into the valleys, even stretching into the north bay valleys tomorrow, low temperatures, upper 40's and low 50's. you'll be starting the day. so pretty mild and we'll be warming up all around. we could see some 80's once again. we did see low 80's in livermore in concord today. so 79 degrees for you in santa rosa, flirting with 80 72 in napa and upper 70's in novato. 59 degrees over in san francisco. 54 in half moon bay, as you make your way to the south bay low 50's for you. here is a tenet town outlook. it looks like we have another warm up coming up late next week. so we're going to be holding on to the 70's from inland the bay and the coast, though notice will be in the 50's and 60's for the next couple of days and inland is where that weather story is where we could see close to 90 degrees inland on friday. and then it looks like next weekend. 80's, mostly sunny. so we're going it's going to feel like summer once again.

mid 70's for monday tuesday, 70's low 70's by the bay of the coast, though, will remain unseasonably cool in the 50's and 60's. but come wednesday, you'll notice will have a change. we'll be back in the 80's inland and thursday, even warmer friday. 87 degrees for you inland. so we could see close to 90 degree weather. so it's the unofficial start to summer this weekend. it's going to feel like summer over the next few days. and then next weekend looks mostly sunny in the 80's and low 70's and 60's. so if you want to keep it cool, say by the bay and coast here, but just keep in mind, if you're, you know, sensitive to the heat, just be mindful. we've already had these heat spikes in recent just be ready for that in the back end of the week. but really just gorgeous around. so can complain. yeah, excited heading up the tahoe tomorrow. he's going to be nice. yes, i would love to host join the winner enjoy at this year's.
