>> they've been longer. have it. >> it's kind of crazy think that business tonight. >> right now on the kron, 4 morning news, a lumber rocks into flames in oakland, nearly 100 firefighters respond to the scene. several people at a senior center are trapped in an elevator as sewage leaks from the second floor will have the full story. and today we remember and honor the brave service members who gave their lives for our country with san francisco national cemetery this morning.

>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at >> good morning and thanks for waking up with us on this monday memorial day. i'm darya and i'm james. we've got lots to cover on this memorial day from the news to the schedule of events today for a lot of the ceremonies and celebrations taking place this afternoon. it will be a big travel day at the airport on the roads were trapped in the tracking. the traffic and gas prices to yes. first, let's get to the weather. good morning, good morning. we are looking at some sunshine later today. anyways. a lot of us are sitting under a bit of grade to kick things off this memorial day. >> by me at the golded gate bridge that blanket of low gray isn't affecting visibility. but you're looking up at it. same in this view at the bay bridge with peer 15 in the flag above just a light breeze pushing into the bay this morning. now we are seeing temperatures moderate across the region still still accessing that ocean cooled air that's pushing in very lightly into the bay having that moderating effect for us. temperatures currently in the 40's to 50's. so a cool start,

pittsburgh. you're at 59 right now. berkeley and sf at fifty-two degrees later on today. just a little bit warmer than yesterday. and that's enough to get us into the 70's and landed 60's to 70's along the bay shore for any memorial day remembrance is maybe heading out to. all right. john, thank you for that. will trump has been light for us for the past few hours. >> and it's supposed to stay this way. as long as we're experiencing that light travel, things might change. later on the day as more people head out right now, 8 minute ride into the city, san mateo bridge about not seen traffic building along 8.80, or one-on-one along the peninsula side. 6 minutes long. the richmond center fell bridge in golden gate bridge. no accidents, no hazards. 20 minute ride. all right. james vaccine, thank you, anna. >> 802, is the time. and today, cities all across the bay area are going to be honoring those who lost their lives while serving our country. fact, we just watch live. president biden at arlington national cemetery. we have will tran and san francisco where ceremony will happen this morning. will.

>> it will be just a solemn at this location as it was at arlington national cemetery with the president. we do expect a lot of people to be here and you can see they are ready to have the ceremonies were about 2 and a half hours away from that. but they spent the weekend putting fresh american flags in front of every gravesite at this particular location. and of course, we're talking thousands of them. if you want to come down now before the ceremony and if you have a family member here, obviously you can spend personal time with them. but if you want to wait around, well, we do expect this to begin in 2 and a half hours from now at san francisco national cemetery. let me show you video from last year. a lot of people show up whether or not they have a family member. obviously this being a national holiday to remember and to say thank you for those who served and died defending

our freedom. and we've seen people like congresswoman nancy pelosi show up in the past. i've seen are personally at this location. not exactly sure if she'll be here this year but would not surprise me last year. a kron four's ken wayne was that the ceremonies and we do expect him once again to be here starting at 10, 30. now, let me show you some other locations, san francisco might be too far away from you if you live in the east bay and you live near san ramon, a ceremony begins in one hour from now. and that's off of bollinger canyon. you can also do it in air island. they've have ceremonies beginning at 9 o'clock as well. and then there's san bruno and that's also a national cemetery. just like the one in san francisco. there are ceremonies will begin at 10, 30 excuse me at 11 o'clock. and then the other went the bottom your screen, 11 o'clock as well. and that is at skyline. and 35 lots going on. i'm sure there are

many ceremonies in the south bay. all you have to do is go to our website at kron 4 dot com, many locations, including san bruno. my advice do you have been covering that particular location? you might want to be dropped off because parking is very difficult in san bruno. but if you come here, they should be adequate parking. never has been a problem in the past. and we do expect a lot of people to start to show up james and area. i would say over the next hour about 90 minutes or so. maybe an hour. and 45 minutes and we expect hundreds to be at that ceremony. lots of dignitaries back to you. >> thank you very much. well, time now is 804, and several people have been displaced because of the big sewage leak and boys in a message, a senior home in oakley, was discovered after people were trapped inside of an elevator. we have kron four's. michael thomas in the newsroom with more on this story. michael, at the pictures aren't they are an appetizing? yeah. good morning, everyone. it's really not the best to look at. and this has meant situation happened yesterday at around

11, 30 in the morning. >> at that point, contra costa county fire says they got there and they realize not only were people stuck in the elevator, but more than 4 dozen senior residents there along with their pets actually had to be removed because of this hazardous water. take a look. we've got video up on your screen. you can see this is what the scene looked like at the senior care facility on carroll lane in oakley. now, the hazardous water was leaking from the bathroom tub. you can see there was over filling and this was on the second floor. eventually that water made its way over to the electrical room. they still don't know exactly what was inside of that tub. and that main electrical room was filled with water. now fire officials along with medical aid also arrived there on the scene and with pg e officials who determined that that water was hazardous in total, 50 senior residents were displaced. take a listen to what one of them had to say. lots of flooding, lots of pipe issues in this building. there's been multiple units where people had to leave on, especially on the second floor.

>> there, the trash each are closer. supposed to be picking up the trash for the seniors 3 times a week. they're not doing that. it trashes sitting in senior homes. i'm removing trash for seniors. other seniors are taking it down. it's been nothing but problems are and know that he's helping them. >> that was one of the caregivers. now multiple residents also tell our crews the building has another amount of handful of issues that still have not been addressed. as of right now, there is no eta as to when the building will be fixed in those people can move back in. so as we get more information from fire officials and we hear back from the actual property management company, we'll continue to keep you updated. that's very latest on the newsroom. i'm michael thomas story. and james, we'll send it back to you. okay. thank you, michael. >> 87 is the time. and now we know the name of a man who died in a motorcycle crash. a 28 year-old joaquin dominic jimenez alvarado. yeah. in fact, he was the sum of half moon bay mayor walking jimenez last night. friends and family

friends together. we honestly a very humble, very friendly just on on this. on this to heart all with mostly, you know, fellow brother to us and not even a full day since the accident. people holding back tears an eye-opening nightmare. israel not real, but now it's yeah. it's-it's setting javier ruiz, another childhood friend says one thing that holds their community together. >> their love for different. and voters i had come out to get the guys out. >> his friends that to always walking but we have a small type and that we have here. we have the community. we have the people. we have the friend of the family. we we have it. we're going hold down now. they're jimenez tells us that his son will be deeply best. and the number of people that you did see at that vigil is evidence of that. now the rest of haukee's family did tell me thit they will find out about potential funeral services. >> coming up in the coming

week, it happened jack ball, but kron 4 news. >> in the east bay, a massive fire explodes at a lumber yard warehouse in oakland sending huge plumes of black smoke into the air. we've got video 81, more than 80 firefighters had to rush to economy lumber as flames. you can see here were leaping into the air. the video here shows the firefighters attacking it from multiple angles. callers reported the fire just before 8 o'clock last night. by the time firefighters got there, the building was engulfed in flames. >> we just heard a bunch of people coming into the gas station there there's a big fire. you guys he was going on. he is going to close. i go outside. it's just smoke up first. and then 2 minutes later, the flames3erupted from the roof. chaos. it's crazy. some people are saying that could have been well, most people, but we're don't know it could railroad tracks. definitely is not the first time we've had fires around here, especially in this area. so there's been fires here before. but nothing of this

kind really this 32 about the whole business has never been like this >> fire officials told nearby residents to keep their doors and windows closed to keep the smoke out. railroad traffic had to be stopped for a time because the track school, right by that building, firefighters did stay on scene throughout the night. >> but now we still it's still an active fire fight. we still there's a rear, the rear of the building that you can see behind us. there's a couple like smaller garage. is that still have some active fire that are in the back you can see from and we've got units and they're working on suppressing that at this time. >> kron 4 will continue to monitor that fire throughout this morning. we'll keep you updated. meanwhile, the golden gate bridge is celebrating its 87th birthday today. it was on this day back in 1937, that it open to the public for the first time that iconic bridge was under construction for 4 years to connect marin county to san francisco in the peninsula. that bridge, you can see this photo here on his very first day. it was only open to pedestrians. so pedestrians had full use of that bridge to celebrate its opening. and then, of course, one day later, cars were

and the southern portions of that cascades up north futurecast shows you that we do have sunshine this afternoon. another push of fog tomorrow morning. there's those misty drizzly spots near the coastline tomorrow morning. tomorrow is the last of these cooler feeling days before those warmer temperatures that i was alluding to. tara and james 50's to 60's along the coastline today. cool day at the coast. maybe not your best day for catching a lot of sun at the coast. elsewhere in the bay area, though we will have our fair share of sunshine and a lot of 70's, san jose at 78 degrees. while fremont at 72 double and a cool comfortable. 73 for you, oakland. nicely at 66. well, antioch, pittsburgh, in vacaville among a few of our areas in the low 80's. tomorrow's temperatures in the upper 70's. one last cooler day. and then you see those upper 80's inland by thursday and friday, even bayshore cities will be getting close to 80 come those same days right now. i don't think that

taking the day off most ups. shipping services will also not be available today. and that includes fedex as well. well, many of those 2 left for the holiday will be returning home today. and so the freeways are expected to be packed. triple a says the afternoon is going to be the worst time to drive. it's best to avoid the freeways between 3 and 07:00pm. they say the best time to drive won't be until after 07:00pm tonight. if you're not already on the road, experts say travel times will be up to 90% longer than and you've got a few love of to make it home today. lot of people are going to be at the gas stations and the average right now statewide is 5.12, a gallon. >> 5.12, in california and nationwide. the average is. >> 3.60. >> and in the bay area, of course, our prices are always higher. so let's take a peek so you don't have a heart attack when you go to the pump. napa county has the most expensive gas on average right now at 5.49. and it's already a huge step down. much cheaper if you go just next door to

sonoma county at 5.37, and then down the list. lose a few pennies by a few pennies until we get to the lowest price at this time. right now, santa clara and solano counties averaging 5.20, a gallon. new surveys this morning shows that most americans are not even able to afford fast food these days, nearly 80% of people say fast food is an indulgence. a luxury item. the big donald's big mac is now more than 8 bucks for a big mac before the pandemic. it 3.99. finance buzz says that taco bell prices are up 80% subway. they don't have the $5 footlong anymore. the bureau of labor statistics says fast food prices have climbed faster, then grocery store prices in a survey, lendingtree just did that. they interviewed 2000 people and they say about 80% said fast food is a luxury because thec're just struggling financially. can't 48 out like that? franchises blame

inflation for the rise in prices and in california, they point the finger at the minimum wage, which is now $20 an hour for fast food workers at the big chains. some of the fast food companies have been slowing. they've been noticing that slowing sales have happened over the last several months. >> primarily robotics technology to start replacing people. you're already seeing that with the kiosk ordering in the number of the different locations that are out there. and if you call that in front of the line behind the line where the food is being made, that's the next thing that you're going to see. robotic burger flipping robot, it fries and so on. >> i had a robot, sir. just it was a fun, like, you know, novelty. but i don't know. i like people. there is an effort to get fast you know, back in your hands at an affordable price and what they're doing to pump up sales. mcdonald's is going to a $5 a limited time, $5 menu when day wendy's is doing a $3

>> at the state capitol, there is an effort to prohibit school districts from forcing teachers to notify parents of how their child identifies, what kind of gender identity they have in school. this bill would make california the first state to prevent schools from requiring teachers 2 out their students to parents. 6 other states that have implemented this all ready. something similar. supporters of the bill say that it respects the privacy rights of students protect them from potential harm from their families at home might not accept him. but those against the bill say that parents have a right to know if their child is identifying at school differently and differently than they are at home.

video led to the arrest of a 25 year-old man accused of punching 2 elderly men in the last month. the first attack happened on may 4th. police say nicholas host was walking on santa moscow, keno road and punched an elderly man in the stomach whose daughter ran away. the victim followed after and got a photo of him. police posted this video on may 17th asking the public for help identifying him and it worked the next day. investigators got his name, but they were not able to contact host police say 75 year-old man was punched in the face on inwood drive-in elam avenue on friday. police say they learned host was the suspect in both attacks on saturday. police contacted his parents and arrested him at their home. who stutter has been charged with 2 counts of elder abuse and for battery of an officer. police say he kicked an officer while being booked into jail. the 25 year olds, parents home is just a few houses down from the victim of friday's attack. kron 4 spoke with a relative of the victim. they said he's

still recovering and they're not quite ready to talk about what happened. another neighbor who wants to remain anonymous says this is sad for e everyone involved. i feel sorry. >> for both sides, it's not like all. this is just kids. just a terrible not a terrible katie's just as he just has. he's a kid with mental and the victim, you know, as an elderly man. so i feel sorry for him. i'm sure they want. from their side. they want justice to. course, i stopped by the who said her family's home to see if they had a response to all of this. but no one answered the door. when i knock someone did drive, i mean, say they went to school with the 25 year-old back in the day and they were sad to hear this news. >> i'm sara stinson reporting in campbell kron. 4 news. >> it ain't 33 and happening tomorrow, scott peterson, the man convicted of killing his pregnant wife, will appear in court via zoom and try to get a new trial. the stanislaus

county prosecutor, the district attorney's office, though, is against this motion los angeles innocence project is representing peterson. they want dna testing of a rope and a stolen van that was burned near the petersons home around the time that peterson's wife, laci, was reported missing the da's office wants the judge to deny this motion because they say all the evidence has been used and peterson was convicted in 2004. >> most nfl police say possibly multiple suspects now are on the loose after a shoot out outside of a bochy ball turn. it was really shocking to people that were just out to play some bochy. let's take a closer look at what happened. >> well, sandra fell. police say if anybody witnessed the shootings to please step forward and offer what information they do have because, of course, there still are those suspects on the loose. now, police tell me it actually happened. not one but 2 separate locations. those reports of shots fired happening in front of dozens

of people. >> workers at marion bochy tell us at least 6 cars were damaged after 2 cars sped down the street saturday afternoon, setting off a crash scene here. many of these cars belonging to tournament players but former but bochy executive director jessica levy and what she saw next shook her to her 2 guys got out of one car and there's they started shooting at the other guys. you know, everybody was shaken up. she says the people shooting at each other. we're all young men. >> and one was shot in the abdomen. she says everybody scattered. yeah, that that the sound of the terror of everybody screaming and then gunshots is. >> i want are in the active in at the face of an investigation. sergeant ronald aguilar with the sandra fell. police department says they can't tell us much, but that reports of the shooting not only happened outside the box. ball facility, but also 2 blocks down. we believe this was an isolated event. so there is no danger to the

public. no danger, but certainly plenty of fear that the shooter right in the eye and then and then. >> got a little scared. jessica says everybody fell to the ground as the bullets flew. she was worried the shooting was going to spread inside. i never feared for my life down here or even felt unsafe can't really say that i don't feel unsafe now because that that was. for these folks. >> the show must go on now. this is total surprise. >> kind of screwed apart are bochy tournament. they clean up and carry garden. that person who was shot. police say they are expected to survive. and again, if you know anything about what happened during these 2 shootings reported here at sandra they're expected to contact police in sandra fell jacmel but kron 4 news. >> and there you see out transfer or ferry workers walking off the job for more than 4 hours over the weekend.

their union voted to authorize a strike as they continue to fight for a new contract. the ferry workers are employed by alcatraz city cruises, which is the only service to and from that popular tourist destination. the workers say they've been dealing with unfair labor practices. san francisco mayoral candidate and supervisor ahsha. aaron peskin was also out there in support of the workers. the ferry company says they're working right now to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. in the south bay, santa clara county nurses of apparently reached a tentative deal with county leaders for months. they and the county have been at odds over a pay raise worker safety issues and a proposal that would float nurses between different hospitals. the registered nurses professional association says the deal includes a 15% raise over the next 4 years. they say the idea float nurses between hospital seems to be off the table for now. the union voted to ratify the deal. so now goes before the board of supervisors on june 4th for final review. >> events are happening across

the nation and here in the bay area to honor our fallen service, fallen service members. it's memorial day and there will be ceremonies happening in san francisco. the scouts and veterans already gathered a golden gate national cemetery and you can see they placed flags at the graves of those who have died fighting for this country. this cemetery also is the final resting place for 15 medal of honor recipients. this is a service project that actually started back in 1949. with the greater st. louis council, they decorated 190,000 graves at jefferson barracks national cemetery. and since then, it has become one of the biggest nationwide service projects variance. >> the chance to do we seen the flags out here, but never actually participated in because it's touching. it's important because look around, morning to be here.

goers. they also celebrated the federal government's efforts to break up ticketmaster. the justice department is suing ticketmaster and its parent company live nation accusing them of running an illegal monopoly over live events in america. and so they've asked a court to break up that system that they say squelch is competition and drives up prices for everyone. the sweeping antitrust lawsuit was brought with a 30 states and district attorneys. general, majority of fans attending this weekend's bottle rock concert say they hope to cut prices and fees will now go down with increased competition. >> if there's chance it will make it better. i'm all for it. as long as it's not where i'm continuing to pay extra money on top of fees, just to be able to get to it's a mistake at the back of the line. and that's the other line. and it just feels like it's pushing back further from even going to see a show anymore. >> well, live nation denies it. it's violated any antitrust laws. they claim most service fees go to the venues. the company says it plans to defend itself.

continue to work on this ongoing investigation. they're asking residents in the area. if you have any home security footage from the time in question, give them a call. you might have a clue. on the peninsula. the man's been arrested now in connection with hit and run crash that sent a woman to the hospital in millbrae. the crash happened sunday morning near the intersection of millbrae avenue in el camino. real mateo county sheriff's office says that a witness told them that a car hit a woman and then drove off that woman was taken to the hospital. sheriff's office says they identified the driver as a 32 year-old man from millbrae. they arrested him at his home. he's now been booked into the maguire correctional facility on suspicion of felony hit and run with serious injuries. >> it's a 48 and a neighborhood is coming together to support a dog walker whose home was burned in a fire while he was at city hall complaining about racist threats that have been happening. >> that i can now look at to the that's the whole goal. always want to have to go some like it happened. so to see it
