>> now from the area's local news station. this is kron. 4 news at 3. >> work day of the sacrifice of all of >> now at 3 commemorating this holiday memorial day. nancy pelosi talking to veterans and community members. everyone paying their respects. hello, everyone. thank you for joining us on kron. 4 news at 3. i'm catherine heenan. it was a busy day at san francisco's national cemetery. this memorial day kron 4 s charles clifford was there. >> well, here in san francisco's national cemetery on memorial day, hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. the san francisco national cemetery was created in 18 80 for every year. they put out around 30,000 flags on all the graves. >> despite the chilly weather

here on monday, hundreds of people came out to the service to pay their respects, including former kron 4 anchor ken wayne, who served as master of ceremonies. there was also a coast guard flyover. former house speaker nancy pelosi was also here on monday and she called on everyone to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, but also to try to build a better world in their memory. >> so we have to work together to come together. one nation. one destiny. to honor the vision of our founders, the aspiration of our children. and the sacrifice of the men and women in uniform of be permitted committed 2 working to gather to build a future worthy of the sacrifice of all. if you. >> now, pelosi also said that she plans to travel to normandy, france next week, too help commemorate the 80th anniversary of the d-day invasion. but for now in the

traffic expected to be picking up right about now and best to avoid the freeways until a 07:00pm travel times are expected to go up by about 90%. and we are following. breaking news out of the south bay where san jose police are on the scene of a deadly crash in the area of montague expressway o toole avenue. officers say 2 cars were involved here. the driver of one of the cars has died. all lanes of westbound. monica, you are closed right now from 8.82 mccarthy boulevard. police say the traffic there will probably be very heavily affected for several hours. time for a look at the forecast on this memorial day at the san mateo bridge looking live kron 4 meteorologist kyla grogan is here with the details. hey there. yeah. i thought since we're talking about travel, i would start with a look at sfo are you can see a little bit of blue sky trying to break through.

>> i'm happy to say that we've had really great travel tips today for your airports. airports are looking good. everybody. no delays at all. we have a little one at sfo earlier and now we're looking good. we also got some sunshine that has broken through in spots. you can see san francisco's kind of that mix of sun and clouds and certainly getting a little breezy east bay hills. you see a little bit of sun kind of breaking through by san jose camera just decided not to play, but they are sunny there right now. and and from mount tam, you can see that there is a little bit marine layer out there getting ready to roll. and so obviously where clouds are. we're cool spots like half moon bay. 53 in san francisco about 58, but where the sunshine is, we're getting some really nice temperatures. 82 a nanny upper in the 70's in san jose livermore conquer just hit. 79 degrees are up to about 75 in santa rosa. so as we go throughout our evening tonight, we are going to see that marine layer rollback. and it's that kind of classic san francisco pattern where we a little sunshine in the afternoon and then that push of marine layer as we roll into the evening hours. so for

memorial day today, i'm taking san jose's example. lots of sunshine out there this afternoon and we'll have a pretty nice evening out there, too. for anyone commemorating the day may be having some kind of gatherings as you go into your evening expected the marine layer will start to build back in. sn obviously, if you're around the bay the coast, you can see that first temperatures overnight tonight, not bad upper 40's and low 50's and we love that onshore breeze. so a little bit of a breezy conditions. be back in a bit. we'll take a look at our 7 day forecast. thank you, kyra. in oakland, crews responded to a four-alarm fire that broke out at a lumber yard. it happened yesterday at economy lumber. more than 80 firefighters responded. >> you look at the video here. the flames are rolling off the buildings. firefighters attacking from several angles. callers reported this fire just before 8 last night. firefighters say by the time they arrived, the building was already engulfed in flames. >> we just heard a bunch of people coming into the gas station there there's a big fire. you guys he was going

you're going to close. i go outside. it's just smoke up first. and then 2 minutes later, the flames erupted from the roof. chaos. it's crazy. >> some people are saying that could have been well, most people, but we're don't what it could railroad tracks. definitely is not the first time we've had fires around here, especially in this area. so there's been fires here before. but nothing of this kind really this 32 about the whole business has never been like this before. >> fire officials were telling people who live nearby to close your doors, close your windows to try limit smoke exposure. railroad traffic was closed because the tracks are right by the fire. firefighters stayed on the scene throughout the night. >> but now we still it's still an active fire fight. we still there's a rear, the rear of the building that you can see behind us. there's a couple like smaller garage. that still have some active fire that are in the back you can see from and we've got units and they're working on suppressing that at this time. >> the cause of that fire is still under investigation.

virginia, also delivered his annual memorial day address. he says since he took office, he assigned more than 30 bipartisan bills to help veterans. and they also talked about and remembered his son beau who served in iraq and died 2015 of brain cancer. memorial day. also a time to remember the hard work and bravery of 2 groups of connected to world war. 2 not always talked about as much, but if not for the efforts of the women commonly known as the rosie's here at home and the covert operations of the so-called ghost army overseas, our world war, 2 history could look very different. >> this year is also a good time to recognize and remember to specific groups of americans, some of them still living whose contributions at home and abroad during world war 2 helped deliver victory over not to germany. one of those groups, a collection of

women who stepped up to fill a void in the u.s. labor force amid the height of the war is commonly recognized and well known. thanks to rosie the riveter, a cultural icon made famous the recruitment posters of the era. the other group which has come to be known as the ghost army has only recently entered the spotlight, living members of both the rosie's and the ghost army were honored during separate ceremonies in washington, d.c., earlier this year with each receiving long overdue. congressional gold medals. may we never forget all that they did for us. >> may their story be told in this and every succeeding generation. may be told and our cities and towns. are schools and places of worship. to our friends and neighbors. and to our families. may their righteous deeds and heroic memory. live with us and a grateful nation. >> forever and in march were members of the ghost army, a

group whose heroics remained shrouded in shadow for decades due to the secrecy of their mission. what was that mission outsmarting and confusing the nazis by any means necessary largely through the use of fake audio in radio transmissions, propped tanks, fake command posts and various other forms of deception. their ultimate goal, safeguarding sensitive information concerning the allies, decisive d-day invasion on the beaches of normandy, recognition of the ghost army's top secret mission coming. thanks. in part to this man, author and filmmaker rick beyer who worked to publicize the group story after their mission was finally declassified in 1996. when i first heard. >> that these guys used inflatable tanks on the battlefield within a few 100 yards of the enemy lines will. of course, i perked up and i said what? why isn't in my history books? and that got me started to dig deeper into the

story. and just every part of that that i found so fascinating that sonic deception using sound. the radio deception using fake, creative and then they did what they called special effects. they set up phony headquarters people impersonating generals partake, bumper markings on their vehicles, all to food enemy spies left behind. then in april, it was the rosie's turn to be honored on the production line. rosie the riveter steps them on the draftees step out. manning the front lines of america's factories. the women who raised their hands to work various trade jobs, aiding the u.s. war efforts have their own special place in american history. >> but it wasn't until this spring that their efforts were officially recognized with about 30 surviving rosies gathering in dc to be honored with congressional gold medals itself and historic event. anything that had to do with war time needs if it was to help build a ship.

least one. those pictures were taken. but the tahoe ski season is officially closed. >> palisades tahoe was operating lips until earlier today. kirkwood and sugar wrapped their seasons. april 28th resorts. well, now get ready to host summer activities, including mountain biking, kyler. so you said you liked the summer stuff? i do. not big, huge fan of of snow. i think it's because >> i spent part of my childhood around it. so i don't find it that fun. but for those who do find if i was kind of cool to get to ski this late in the season, yet quite late in and if you like summer to, i think it's gorgeous. you get the flowers you get, you know, biking and hiking and all that. right now we're getting just a slight chance that a 10% chance of a little thunderstorm cells popping up there. you can see just a little bit action as we get to the heat of the day that expect anything too much for the sierra does have the chance of it this afternoon. so there you go. but wrap it up with the skis, at least we are having a pretty good memorial day to day. if you have any activities planned.

our weather is looking good here. no chance of thunderstorm in the bay area. in fact, we've got this partly sunny skies out there. temperatures inland now have reached into the low 80's in some spots. will the coast still saying a little cool of the 50's? that's because of that marine layer live look from the east bay kind of shows you that we've got that mix of sun and clouds, right? depending on where you are, the closer to the water, you are the more you see the clouds. and that's certainly the case in half moon bay, although i have to say, you can see plenty of people are out there taking a walk, just enjoying the coast, maybe just taking that jacket to bundle up a little bit and being prepared for just a little bit of mist in those cooler temps. it's about 53 there right now are at 72 in san jose. 62 in oakland. 79, though, in concord pits where you can see it, 82. so we're warming up a lot of spots here. fairfield up to 79 to flirting with that 80 degree. mark 72 nevado and then you can see it cloverdale and kelsey bill also in the 80's while the day today. that's that microclimate, right? bay just still in the 50's because of the marine layer. also getting a little more breezy this afternoon.

you can see we're in the teens across the bay area. so that certainly makes it feel a little bit cooler than the temperature. high pressure has been in control. and as we go through the next few days, you're going to see that start to build up a little bit and that will make our temperatures go up a bit as we get into the end of the week and then we get kind of zone on meeting. we just kind of stay the same kind of quiet weather pattern. very typical a bay area where we you know, a day where we're going to have some of that marine layer in the morning and then we get afternoon sunshine and we get them really aback when we get into the evening. but you can see that warm up thursday into friday is when it will peak pulls back a little on the weekend for next weekend. but still looking pretty nice. thank there's been another report of getting injured by severe turbulence. this time it was a qatar flight headed to dublin. >> the plane did land safely in dublin on schedule sunday afternoon. airline officials say, however, 6 passengers, 6 crew members did report injuries. 8 people had to be

taken to the hospital. passengers say it happened during meal service with trays in the aisle. it was a asked. some people were not wearing their they were thrown from their seats. i'm feeling okay and settle down now. but it was quite scary. plane just seem to go. >> you didn't, but then dropped. quite us to be dropped. and then for changing the captain, got it under control quite quickly because i was thinking, oh, it's going to falling. >> this comes from amber just 5 days after british man died of a suspected heart attack and dozens of people were injured. that went to singapore flight from london hit severe turbulence. and incidents of turbulence. so might be on the rise just yesterday. the transportation dpsecretary pete buttigieg says that turbulence may be up by roughly 15%. some people blaming climate change last year. one study said there's been evidence of spike some

stores that are open not include some of the big chains like walmart target, aldi. the only retailer major road retailer closed today costco also closed, of course, government buildings. we know no mail is being delivered today. most ups shipping will not happen today, including fedex. the weekend box office. not good or certainly not up to expectations. in fact, it had the lowest memorial day earnings and more than 20 years that mad max prequel furiosa topped the box office from friday to sunday with 25.6 million. but again, a lot lower than expected. the garfield movie. estimated to finish the four-day weekend with 31.9 million dollars. but all that way lore, then they were hoping. and for people thinking about buying a lottery ticket, you do still have a no tickets matched the winning numbers drawn over the weekend. the mega millions jackpot now has grown to

moon bay mayor joaquin jimenez and last night, friends and family gathered to remember him kron four's. jack molmud has the story. >> remembering someone gone too soon. >> oh, man, it's unbelievable. he can't. we can't imagine. we honestly, i woke up this morning i think i was dreaming for a drink. can see no have bay that someone was a lifelong friend. couldn't tell you that age, you know, urges young guns out here in middle school, just kindness. ryan r by schools all day. >> 28 year-old joaquin dominic. he met alvarado, died saturday, riding his motorcycle down highway one. he was the son of half moon bay, mayor hockey. minutes. the aftermath was immediate we actually we have a group child, but we all check in when we hear about incidents like and unfortunately he was one of the guys that can not check in with. and while the roadside vigil continues to stop community members around

sandra fell court workers at marine bochy say at least 6 cars, most of them belonging to players were damaged after a shooting at the intersection of loss and e streets. witnesses say 2 men got out of a car, firing shots at each other. police say one person was shot in the stomach, expected to survive. former nba star bill walton has died at the age of 71 after what was described as a long battle with cancer. he was reportedly surrounded by his family and friends. walton led the ucla bruins to 2 national championships and an incredible 88 game winning streak. he later helped the portland trail blazers. of course, when the 1977 nba championship, despite injuries to one another and be a title with the boston celtics in 1986. before retiring the nba commissioner said bill walton was truly one of a kind as a hall of fame player. he

the motion los angeles innocence project is representing peterson. they want to do dna testing on a rope and a stolen van that was burned near the peterson home about that the time that his wife, laci went missing the da's office is asking the judge to deny the motion, arguing that much of the evidence was already used to convict peterson in 2004. families in uvalde are taking more legal action on the second anniversary of the robb elementary school attack. they are filing lawsuits against meta as well as the developers of the call of duty video games and a gun manufacturer. they argue they all share responsibility for the products used by teenage gunman. this comes after some of the families filed a 500 million dollar lawsuit against texas state police officials. the government of papua new guinea says the huge landslide 3 days ago has

buried more than 2000 people. that's more than triple the un's initial estimate about 150 houses were buried beneath debris. the debris, they say almost 2 stories high. most people were asleep when this happened. there are mountains. it is a tough area to get into. so aid has been slow in reaching people. international relief workers also require military escorts because of tribal warfare. we've been tracking powerful storms sweeping across the southern and eastern parts of the country this memorial day weekend. storms of destroyed homes killed dozens of people. this is part of the aftermath of a funnel cloud that touchdown in decatur, arkansas yesterday morning. it tore through several buildings and homes bringing down trees and power lines. one of the funnel clouds touched down near abilene, texas. so this video taken by blake foster. there

are social media reports of downed trees loss of electricity. a lot of roof damage and farm animals being killed. residents say to rv homes were destroyed in the tornado. no injuries have been reported. and that severe weather is already making its way through the east coast. people are being encouraged to sign up for weather warnings to have an emergency plan. let's go to kron 4 meteorologist kyla grogan for more on that kyla. yeah, it's really busy day today. part of the reason this happens is the heat and you can see excessive heat warnings and heat watches in texas where in houston right now. >> it's about 96 degrees. now as we zoom in here, you see a lot of this yellow on the map. the yellow is severe thunderstorm watches for the outlines and warnings for the solid boxes that you see this one just south of dallas where this thunderstorm warning is kicked up in georgia all day today. we've also had these severe thunderstorm warnings that have rolled across parts of alabama into georgia. and

you can see all of them here and that's not the end of it. this is very dangerous right now in north carolina where we have a tornado warned cell that has been rolling right across near plymouth and heading out the barrier islands there. so and then into the northeast as you're talking about. so we get up to parts of virginia. you can see we're in some of this as well and outlines around parts of maryland right now. severe thunderstorm warning that is just to the west of baltimore. so obviously getting into some very populated areas. and as i zoom out here, you can see this line of storms continuing to roll right through new england and believe it or not, even into parts of the midwest today. we're looking at yet again. tomorrow is expected to be a very busy day for what's called severe weather, meaning storms that are capable of producing tornadoes. so once again will be something to keep an eye on. and this heavy thinking about the climatology of this. this is the month of may and how many tornadoes are average per month. and each state obviously can see the areas in red. the numbers are very high. we're talking above 10 tornadoes possible. and then as we get into next

>> alcatraz ferry workers walked off the job for 4 hours over the weekend. their union voted to authorize a strike. >> as they continue to fight for a new contract. the workers are employed by alcatraz. city crews is the only serve a service to and from the popular tourist destination. the workers claim they have been dealing with unfair labor practices. san francisco mayoral candidate and supervisor aaron peskin was at this protest. the ferry company says it is trying to reach a fair agreement santa clara county nurses have reached a tentative deal with county leaders. they have been at odds on a new contract for months. the sticking points, including raises worker safety, a proposal to float nurses between different hospitals. the nurses union says the deal includes a 15% raise over 4 years and says

>> as state lawmakers worked to move bills through the legislative process. some members of the assembly and senate are hoping to advance proposed reparations for descendants of enslaved black americans. capitol correspondent eytan wallace joins us with a look at which bills made it through so far and which failed to advance. >> well, it's been mixed results for reparations bill. so far back as the proposals tell me they believe they're off to a good start. >> a standing ovation in the state assembly after lawmakers voted 62 to nothing to advance a reparations bill calling on the state of california to publish a formal apology letter to descendants of enslaved black americans. the most important thing is making sure we can we get it out there. south los angeles, a someone member ready, john sawyer authored the legislation while he acknowledges california was never formally a slave state. he says since its inception in 18, 50, the state has implemented policies

negatively impacting black californians to this day noting california's first governor peter burnett was a slave owner from the south to openly called for creating a whites only american west and helped put in place. a lot 10 slaves back to the south if they fled a letter. >> i'm not only talking about california complicity and cattle slavery. but making sure that california actually east apologizes for what has happened not to make anyone feel guilty. but the be served at healing document, other reparations bills advancing include one requiring grocery stores to provide advance notice before closing down in underserved communities. >> and a proposal by senator steven bradford to formally create what would be called to the california american freeman affairs agency in charge of overseeing the reparations process in the state of california. critically important. >> for setting up the framework for reparations going forward. think we have a good foundation work from but several reparations related

bills did not make it, including bradford's proposal to fund housing and property tax assistance for descendants of enslaved black americans. i disappointment reparations about. >> when that's why we build generational wealth in this country african-americans have been denied. >> ownership to redlining restrictive covenants, all kind of other restrictions not included in any of the reparations bills this year, direct cash payments. democratic leaders overseeing the state budget they would have liked to advance more reparations bills, but they add it just would have been too costly as the state faces a projected multibillion-dollar deficit. it's just a challenging budget time. and so we needed to be responsible. >> responsible taxpayers money. so that's why we had to make some tough calls. and lawmakers whose reparations bill to not make it through this year. tell me they will try again in future years reporting at the state capitol, a tonn wallace kron. 4 news. >> the house official has passed a bill that pushes back on a washington, d.c., law that allows and non u.s. citizens to vote. there are 16

never got to do any good, spoil watching. i have down in monterey bay it was fantastic. i have lots of video of me going. oh, my gosh. oh, my gosh. went right by the vote. it's pretty things about living in california that we have so much. >> beautiful nature here between the ocsan and the mountains and so much going on. we've also got a little breeze going on that you can see here and a little marine layer that's been hanging out at the coast and around the bay. that's obviously where the cooler temperatures are. but we do have some nice 70's out there. almost 80 degrees in concord city at 79. pretty nice temperatures at this hour. but we are a little breezy tomorrow. i do think we're going to get even more breezy in the afternoon. but getting that onshore flow, bringing that marine layer back in for the night. that's kind of the story. also starting to see just a little bit of action in the sierra trying to get few maybe rain showers going there doesn't look like anything too serious but something to keep an eye on for the folks out that way. we're nice and quiet, though, here. it's going to be just a really nice calm evening with the marine layer rolling in

temperatures getting a little bit cooler as we go throughout the night and as you can see here in fog cast, obviously those the the coast never really lost the marine layer, but it will start to build back in this about 11 o'clock tonight and then overnight, that's when things really get going. which means we wake up tomorrow once again with a little bit of a grey start to the day and then we work our way up to a little sunshine, particularly in live. let's talk about livermore. let's talk temperature trends. we're going to see this week's the average high livermore, 77 degrees today tomorrow. kind of around that they will start to build those temperatures up to about 10 degrees above normal. as we get into thursday friday, we'll pull it back a little bit on the weekend. but it also got me thinking about what this month has been like, because as much as i can't believe that the month is over at the end of this week's i looked at livermore's example, we've gotten 17 above average days, 3, normal and just 6 below average. we're going add to some of that above average total later this week. so it's been an interesting run so far this month and a pretty nice week ahead. just a really classic california kind of

bad, though. upper 40's to about low 50's tonight. so pretty quiet as far as weather is concerned for your evening tomorrow, more of the same. we're going to start off with the marine layer, the coastal hang on to it but inland, we'll get some sunshine. you can see. there's a very similar temperatures except does look like the north bay will likely get a little bit warmer tomorrow, looking at the potential for some 80's in a spot like santa rosa, east bay, antioch, looking to get close to that 80 degree mark, some nice 60's around the bay itself and some 70's down in the south bay. so let's take a look at your extended forecast. it's a pretty good looking forecast. everybody now does leave out the part where we are going to have that marine layer in the morning and we get the sun in the afternoon. but that aside, we've got some really nice temperatures warming up as we head into thursday and friday getting well above average. and then next weekend you can see we do cool it down a touch, but still really nice weather above average temperatures. very classic california, as i've been calling it marine layer in the morning. sunshine in the afternoon and then a little marine layer as we go into our
