still at the site today putting out remaining hot spots. thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 5. i'm noelle bellow and i'm stephanie lin. the fire broke out at oakland's economy, lumber company. it destroyed 10% of the property kron four's level. got in. joining us in studio now with the latest on that fire fight. less love. that's right. nearly 80 firefighters responded to this fire at the lumber yard last night. now crews were able to eventually put the flames out. but right now they're still working on certain parts of that property. >> flames filled the skies sunday night around the lumber company off of interstate 80 in oakland. while no one was injured, the fire spread quickly and ended up destroying at least one building has a large footprint so tight. it's showroom. it's administrative offices. >> a warehouse and then a large lumber yard outside full of for what? so it burned for several hours. michael hunt with the oakland fire department says crews initially struggled gaining access to the lumber yard and the surrounding area property.

>> sits the border. the borders are railroad we could put all we was hose lines on the railroad track put. on one side of the property and the high street also borders. it's getting up or out as into the property was a challenge. fire crews were out on the scene all day monday working with the owners to go through the property for any additional hot spot excavation crews, the heavy equipment operators deal assistant picking apart the property and officially make sure that any flare ups are being quickly extinguished throughout the process. the part of the structure that need to to be demolished last night. you know, there were several small rekindles which were >> officials say it's still not clear if the fire started inside or outside the property. and this remains as an open investigation and they expect the crews will remain at the site until possibly from midnight today reporting

in studio going kron 4 news. leslie, thank you. in the south bay, san jose police responded to a fatal car crash in the area of montague expressway toll avenue. >> officers say 2 cars were involved. one driver is dead. the incident shut down all lanes of westbound montague expressway from 80 to macarthur boulevard police say to expect severe traffic impacts for the next several hours. also at san jose, a man is dead tonight after an apartment shooting on blossom riverway. it happened around 2.45 sunday afternoon. police say they found the man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he died at the scene. no word on a suspect yet. this is san jose's 15 homicide this year. >> 50 is senior residents and their pets are without a home this evening with no idea when they can get back to their apartment building after being forced to evacuate over the weekend, a sewage leak forced the evacuation of the senior care facility on carroll lane in oakley, a bathroom tub was found to be overflowing with

black water on the second floor. officials say the liquid inside that top appeared to be a mixture of substances and it's still being investigated actually what it is. the liquid made its way down the hall to the building's main electrical room causing chaos for the residence. >> lots of flooding. lots of hype issues in this building. there's been multiple units where people had to leave especially on the second floor. there, the trashy to close. they're supposed to be picking up the trash for the seniors 3 times a week. they're not doing that. it trashes sitting in senior homes. i'm removing trash for seniors. other seniors are taking it down. it's been nothing but problems are and know that he's helping them. >> both the medical personnel and fire officials were called to the scene along with pg and e who determined that blackwater you saw was hazard has several residents say the building has a head of handful of issues and none have been addressed. >> want to play cup play. give

holiday today. right now millions of americans are heading home after the memorial day weekend. and that means the roads are quite busy right now. triple a says the worst time to drive is from now through 7 tonight. it says after 7 o'clock, you should be good to go. experts say right now travel times are up 90% longer than reminder, chp is also out in full force on those roads for its maximum enforcement period. not, of course, an effort to stop unsafe drivers, the extra patrolling on the roads will. and tonight at midnight, chp says around this time last year, 46 people died in crashes and more than 1100 were arrested during the holiday weekend. we do want to give you a live look at how traffic is fairing around the bay area. things look pretty green. >> right here at home. so so that's pretty good. maybe most kind of stated and enjoyed the weather over the weekend. hopefully everyone's going to be able to to get pretty

easily. this passed on all of that as well. and then and live look outside, of course, at the bay bridge, beautiful blue skies of those drivers are enjoying out there as well, parents. and you know what they're doing there. everybody is hunkering down having the barbecues right now, right very long. people going get back out on the roads, get busy out there. but >> now we've got some great weather around the bay area, least away from the coastline along the coast. >> still that patchy fog has moved in, going to be a little thick out toward the beaches. but overall, you can see that finger fog now stretching into the bay, looking down from our mount tam cam as we've got some sunshine, some nice warm temperatures around the bay area today to how about this 70 degrees. beautiful evening in san jose on this memorial day. for much cooler in half moon bay with some patchy fog. 53 in very cool in pacifica. 57 now into san francisco. you've got 81, though, in fairfield, 82 in pittsburgh. and you're looking at 73 and beautiful and santa rosa. so, yeah, really some nice weather out there now. little breezy in spots, coast side just general sea breeze in many of the interior valleys. but overall looks like some decent

weather ahead. that fog. yeah, kind of stick around. get ready to roll back on shore again for tonight. it will thicken up quite a bit. so if you're headed out tonight, you're enjoying your nice barbecue wine on a nice evening, especially in the interior valleys, 60's and 70's there. even some 80's, the warmest valleys, cool out toward the coastline. just down a little closer that barbecue. guys, back to you. >> all right, lawrence, thank you. and there were several events in the bay area this memorial day honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for country. kron four's rob nesbitt joining us live here in studio with more on the meeting of the holiday. rob. >> memorial day is a federal holiday that gives many a day off from school and work. but you can't forget what it really stands for to honor members of the u.s. military who died while serving. >> raids like the one held in hillsborough happen in cities all across the u.s. monday. memorial day celebrations with marching bands and onlookers. but most importantly, veterans men and women in uniform who

help remind us to honor the heroes who died while serving their country. it's why navy veteran louis ross and others gathered on the uss hornet in alameda knowing that we are respected. and what we did is respected. that sentiment also ran true in san jose for memorial day ceremony at oak hill memorial park. tyler where major robert adam patterson with the united states marine corps read the names of fallen soldiers. john maloney to water them. remind us the cost of freedom is one day out of the year that we citizens and those privileged enough to be here. >> homage to those who gave their lives for our freedom and for our way of life. from key note, speakers to city leaders, san jose mayor matt mahan also spoke at oak hill. >> say the best way to spend memorial day is to renew the commitment of the turtle values as a nation, political and legal equality of all people.

alcatraz. city crews is the only service operating and that runs to and from the popular tourist destination. the workers say they've been dealing with unfair labor practices. san francisco mayoral candidate and supervisor aaron peskin attended this demonstration. the ferry company says they're working to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. and happening tomorrow, scott peterson, the man convicted of killing his wife is set to appear in court via zoom, his defense team, the los angeles innocence project has been trying to get him a new trial by gathering new evidence. they want a dna test, a rope and stolen van beurden near the peterson's home around the time that his wife laci went missing. but the stanislaus county district attorney's office is opposing the motion. coming up, a motorcyclist who died in a crash in san mateo county has been identified as the son of half moon bay's mayor. >> how friends are remembering the victim today. >> plus, voters out on the water for the memorial day holiday. we're taking a look

>> on the peninsula, search is underway for the gunman behind a fatal shooting in belmont. it happened around 8 friday night near or win and hillary streets just off 101 near o'donnell park. the victim was shot several times and died at the scene. we spoke with a neighbor who lives in the area. >> skating and have you know,

warning if your still planning to hit the coast to catch the end of memorial day, officials say pacific as linda mar beach has a 54% bacteria rate the surfrider foundation which focuses on improving coastal water quality says this amount of bacteria could be putting public health at risk. >> what you want to do is you want to check local water quality reports before you get into the water. we the surfrider foundation posts are water results on instagram, facebook and online. you can find us and that this information, sir. fred, a downward but also pay attention to swim advisories and avoid swimming right after it rains. i don't swim surf near a creek such as pedro creek or other outlets, where storm water drains. and then you know, you want people to rinse off with clean fresh water before you when you leave the beach. >> the foundation says they post water testing reports every week on their website.

meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us now with a look. >> what we can expect. yeah, guys, we've got very weather coming our way. of course. nice cool on the coastline. very warm in spots inland up in the 80's. may see a couple of 90's in the week ahead. so some hot spots coming our way. but at the door right now, a nice holiday around the bay area. weather wise, we've got mostly sunny skies looking for the space and the fog toward the coastline. everywhere else, though, sunny and bright and looks like a nice evening outside the breeze. alone over 30 miles an hour in the san francisco. and you're looking for the ferry building. yeah, we are seeing some gusty winds out there right now. so more that on the way that's going to carry with it. some low clouds and the fog that are perched along the coastline and a couple thunderstorms over the high country. the sierra nevada been watching that closely. this could be really dangerous if you're out there camping or boating or do some outdoor activities. thunderstorms erupting in the afternoon. pretty calm in the sierra nevada. a little moisture up there. the bay area, though, look at that fog kind of surge along the coastline, not much clearing out for the beaches today. that means that's get those temperatures very cool in the

50's. now, high pressure going kind of weaken a little bit. then that's going allow this a frontal system begin to flatten out ridge just some what that means. temperatures not a big change. i think later in the week, once the front goes by, we're really going heat things up. but here we go tomorrow talk about 58 degrees. cool fog in san francisco. as you make way into oakland find sunny skies in the afternoon. but a little bit on the breezy side and then in the san jose. very nice, comfortable day. this temperatures probably a little bit below the average. still 70 degrees and sunny and warm and then the next couple days. well, things begin to change. probably cooling down just slightly into wednesday. but as we get into thursday, how about that? some hot 90's began to show up in some of the valleys. but that's where we start to see that big contrast in temperatures. you get 90's inland. we start talking about all the hot weather and people on the coast thursday. what key? all right. yeah. that these and 60's with fog on the beach is right. i want a walk today and the north and i went from heat too cold to heat up cold because of the way the fog was coming at a nascent. i mean, you talk about micro climates

within a 20 minute, you know, walk, get your party. jack, in the next part, you take that thing incredible. we love the bank. all right, lawrence, thank you so much. thank you. >> all right. a successful animal rescue in san francisco chased a dog over the side of a cliff. that wasn't the other way around. >> it happened in the patrol hill neighborhood by are crews name this dog or rather they rescue this dog named cushy pup. that's a fun day. just before 10, 30 on sunday night. a video shows firefighters using ropes to pull this dog to safety. the dog was not injured. so good news there back home with his owner. well, as people gather around the dinner table this holiday weekend, a reminder from animal experts tonight that certain foods are dangerous for pets. the american kennel club released this list includes bones from cook meats like wings and ribs because they can splinter and cause a choking hazard for your pet. the agency also says to avoid giving your dog raw meat, hotdogs and other salty foods,

>> on capitol hill, a bill pushing back on a law allowing non u.s. citizens to vote passed in the house right now, 16 cities and towns in the u.s. allow non-citizens to vote in local elections. republican lawmakers argue that dilutes the power of registered voters. california is launching a pilot program that would charge abe a charge drivers rather based on how many miles they drive instead of how much gas they buy, gas taxes, help pay for road maintenance. but that revenue stream is expected to dwindle as state law encourages more ev sales in the years to come. some worry gps data will be used to track the miles you drive and calculate that and that could lead to possible privacy concerns. the irs is free file has been extended through 2029. those who make less than $79,000 a year are eligible. the irs says the software was used by more than 2 million taxpayers. that's about a 7% increase over last year. the agency is also

a motorcycle crash on highway one over the weekend. he was the son of half moon bay mayor joachim and then authorities have identified him as 28 year-old joaquin dominique. and then as alvarado, that crash happened just before 6 o'clock saturday night at the intersection of marauder road and highway one. authorities say alvarado was riding his motorcycle when he got in a crash with a pickup truck. >> yesterday his family gathered to remember him at his uncle's house, his childhood friends who showed up on their bikes say they want to continue writing to honor him. >> oh, man, it's unbelievable. he can't. we can't imagine. we honestly, i woke up this morning i think i was i was waking up overnight. i was just screaming the whole time. but unfortunately, no, that's not the case for us. when we lost, we honestly, a very humble, very friendly just on on this on this to heart all you know, fellow brother to us.

>> heartbreaking loss. city officials say alvarado worked as a union stationary engineer and san francisco. they say he was an integral part of the half moon bay community. in the south bay, santa clara county nurses reached a tentative deal with county leaders for months. both sides were at odds with the county over raises worker safety and a proposal to float nurses between different hospitals. the registered nurses professional association says the latest deal includes a 15% raise over 4 years. the union voted to ratify the deal. now it goes before the board of supervisors on june 4th for final approval. is your local election headquarters. the news at climate and dance vote fest kicks off in berkeley tomorrow. organizers say they hope the event helps to get out the vote for the november election. this happens at the freight and salvage club starting at 07:00pm and tickets are available at the door. >> up at our state capitol, some lawmakers are still hoping to advance bills
