in the south bay causing traffic delays on one of the busiest travel days of the year. good evening. thank you for joining us here on companies at 6. i'm noelle bellow and i'm stephanie lin. the crash happened just after 2 this afternoon causing lanes to shut down on the montague expressway kron. four's jack moment is live at the scene with the latest check. >> yeah, i know own stephanie. things have been shut down here since earlier this afternoon. as you can see behind me, things are still relatively shutdown. but just about maybe 2 minutes ago, they cleared away that wreckage between those 2 cars, san jose says that one person did die in that car accident where it was between a car and a truck. to let you take a look here behind me. you can see they did clear lot about up, but much of the roads are still closed off at this time. now, some video earlier today that we shot. you could see that that absolute wreckage from that car that happened there. obviously a very gruesome scene. i think it was shut down on this normally busy intersection earlier this afternoon and things are still closed right now. police say

it happened around 2 in the afternoon. crash occurred between the truck and the car doesn't seem anyone else was involved. there. the driver died here on the scene. now, we don't know many other details about possibly led up to the crash. but people who do work near this intersection say this road, people drive fast and recklessly. >> i know that this is 3 they saw very dangerous because usually walk to catch another bus when there's no route here and i feel kind of and save, you know what i'm doing the crossroads. so cars are coming really fast. >> now a police did say they plan to announce on their social media when these roads are expected to reopen again soon. it looks like it should happen hopefully soon. now that they cleared away about now did reach out and ask him questions about what led up to this crash. what they believe may have led up to it. they said the hope to bring out more details tomorrow for now. still just quite a gruesome scene here will throw back to you guys. >> jack, thank you. also in san jose, a man is dead

tonight after an apartment shootingblossom river way. it happened around 2.45 sunday afternoon. police say they found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he died at the scene. no word on a suspect. fire crews are back at a lumber yard in oakland tonight after a massive fire sparked there last night. >> kron four's lezla gooden joins us in the studio now with the latest on this lezla. yeah, that's right. nearly 80 firefighters respond to this fire at the lumber yard around 8 o'clock last night. now crews were able to eventually put the flames out. but right now there are still working on certain parts of this property. >> flames filled the skies sunday night around the economy. lumber company off of interstate 80 in oakland. while no one was injured, the fire spread quickly and ended up destroying at least one building has a large footprint so tight. it's showroom. it's administrative offices. >> a warehouse and then a large lumber yard outside full of for what? so it burned for several hours. michael hunt

with the oakland fire department says crews initially struggled gaining access to the lumber yard and the surrounding area property. >> sits the border. the borders are railroad we could put all we was hose lines on the railroad track put. on one side of the property and the high street also borders. it's getting up or out as into the property was a challenge. fire crews were out on the scene all day monday working with the owners to go through the property for any additional hot spot excavation crews, the heavy equipment operators deal assistant to the park property. and additionally, make sure that any flare ups are being quickly extinguished throughout the process. the part of the structure that need to to be demolished last night. you know, there were several small rican goals which were quickly unit. >> and officials say it's still not clear at the fire started inside or outside of this property. and this remains as an open investigation and they are

expected that excuse me, expect the crews will remain at the site until possibly around midnight tonight. pretty live in the seal is going kron. 4 news. >> let's look. thank you. lot of people are heading home after the long weekend. we're taking a look at how traffic is fairing at this hour. a lot of green out there right? >> do you think if i kind of look closely, of there's always a little bit of a slowdown, right, as you try to get into the city from the east bay. >> also heard from someone earlier took them 5 hours to get from carmel to the north bay. so, you know, in certain spots, you're definitely going to expect some slow down a reminder. chp is also out in full force for its maximum enforcement period. it's an effort to watch out for unsafe drivers and stop them in the act. the maximum enforcement period will. and at midnight tonight, chp says around this time last year, 46 people died in crashes. more than 1100 were arrested during the memorial day weekend. last year. lot of people flying

home as well. taking a live look at sfo where see quite a bit of fog out there. so far, the airport seen more than 160 delays today. a new report showing travelers in the united states lost more than 2 million hours of their lives last year while waiting out flight delays. lawrence, we didn't go anywhere. so we didn't have deal with all that's a phone particular. they've been doing some construction on the runway there. and those they've seen a numerous delays for quite sometime out the door. right now, though, you see the clouds moving in. sometimes that can mean issued sfo to the good news is. >> no delays being reported right now. sfo, oakland or san jose. you're all looking good out there right now. that breeze, though, is kicking up around the bay area. some of those wind gusts over 30 miles per hour. and a san francisco and that will carry with it. more low clouds and fog overnight tonight into following day on tuesday morning. you see plenty of clouds, temperatures kind of all over the map. you got 50's coast side still upper 60's in

the senate. clear about how about 80 degrees. still in pittsburgh, 78 fairfield. 76 degrees right now in concord and a beautiful 69 uncomfortable in snow. most so nice temperatures around the bay area away from the immediate coastline and just inside the bay and really you can see why the effects of the low clouds and the fog kind of hugging the california coastline and inside the bay area. some of that is not going away. thunder storms popping up over the sierra nevada today. that's something to watch out for the high country during these times. even though we may be drying things out. a lot of times you get a little moisture riding up on the top of the ridges there. you can see some afternoon thunderstorms popping up to be very dangerous out there. if you're camping or fishing. in the meantime, though, out along the coastline right now, you see some of that fog beginning to creep back on shore. that sea breeze has kicked in. the more that going to be filling in overnight tonight. if you're headed out there, maybe to a barbecue this evening. a nice evening on tap for you. nice comfortable, especially inland temperatures cool by the coastline. little more fog on the way, though, as we head through the night. guys, back to you. all right, lawrence, thank you. >> several events happened in

the bay area. this memorial day honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. kron four's rob nesbitt reports. >> memorial day is a federal holiday that gives many the day off from school and work. but you can't forget what it really stands for to honor the members of the u.s. military who died while serving their raids like the one held in hillsborough happen in cities all across the u.s. monday. memorial day celebrations with marching bands and onlookers. but most importantly, veterans men and women in uniform who help remind us to honor the heroes who died while serving their country. >> it's why navy veteran louis ross and others gathered on the uss hornet in alameda knowing that we are respected. and what we did is respected. that sentiment also ran true in san jose for memorial day ceremony at oak hill memorial park. tyler where major robert adam patterson with the united

fire in napa off of the craze canyon road. firefighters quickly put out those flames before they could spread to the surrounding land. crews are still on scene that this evening to make sure nothing reignites. driver has been arrested in santa rosa after leading sonoma county deputies on a lengthy car chase. yeah. the whole thing caught on thermal chopper camera. take a look at this. now. it started. >> around 9 in santa rosa saturday night. authorities say a deputy tried to stop a great bmw driving recklessly on santa rosa road. that's when investigators say the driver sped off and started heading towards downtown santa rosa. authorities say the car eventually lost control and crashed into a tree and a wall on south a street. the driver was arrested on several violations. take a look at this video. a successful animal rescue in san francisco after wreck chased a dog over the side of a cliff.

>> it happened in the metro hill area. fire crews rescue this dog named cushy pop. that's a fun day. just before 10, 30 on sunday night video shows firefighters using ropes to pull cushy dog to safety. the dog was not injured and he has been reunited with his owner. >> happening tomorrow, scott peterson, the man convicted of killing his wife, laci, is set to appear in court via zoom, his defense team, the los angeles innocence project has been trying to get a new trial by gathering some new evidence. they want a dna test, a rope and a stolen van burned near the petersons home around the time his wife laci had gone missing. however, the stance la county district attorney's office is set to be opposing the motion. still to come here on kron, 4 news at 6 former oakland police chief is now running for city council. why he believes he's qualified for the job. >> and the community and half moon bay mourning tonight after the city's mayor loses his son to a motorcycle crash.

>> 50 senior residents and their pets are not in their homes this evening with no idea when they can get back to their apartment building after being forced to evacuate over the weekend, a sewage leak forced the evacuation of the

senior care facility on carroll lane in oakley, a bathroom tub was found to be overflowing with black water on the second floor of the building. officials say the liquid you see there inside the tub appeared to be a mixture of substances and it still being investigated. the liquid made its way down the hall to the building's main electrical room, causing chaos for the residents, medical personnel and fire officials were called to the scene along with pg and e who determined the water to be hazardous. several residents say the building has had 8 handful of issues and not have been addressed. >> want to play cup play. give us 72 eviction notices up our arena. but charges they're good kids get looks pretty good. we set up light is. >> residents were sent to a nearby hotel according to contra costa fire. there is no word tonight on when they can return home.

>> somebody would erase open-ended that it needed that it said the 40's and i read >> former oakland police chief leronne armstrong kicked off his campaign for city council and the clemens high school over the weekend. he was joined by a lineup of community leaders, including councilmember noel gallo. armstrong is vying for rebecca kaplan seat. he faces 8 other candidates for that opportunity. armstrong is diving into politics while at the same time suing the city of oakland for wrongful termination. >> in the south bay, santa clara county nurses reached a tentative deal with county leaders for months, nurses and the county were at odds over raises worker safety and a proposal to float nurses between different hospitals. the registered nurses professional association says the deal includes a 15% raise over 4 years. and so is the idea of float. nurses between hospitals seems to be off the table. the union voted to ratify that deal. now it will

go before the board of supervisors on june 4th for final approval. the golden gate bridge is celebrating its 87th birthday today on this day in 1937, the bridge open to the public for the first time. >> it was under construction for 4 years connecting marin county to san francisco in the peninsula and pedestrians. as you can see there could walk across it the first day before it opened up to cars. very cool. love seeing those photographs. >> many families gathered by the water for boating and jet skiing. this memorial day. water safety has been top of mind under state law children under 13 years of age on a moving recreational vessel are required to wear a life jacket unless they're constrained by a harness, tethered to a sailboat or in an enclosed cabin. the u.s. coast guard also suggests voters plan ahead in case of emergencies. a family we spoke with uses signals to communicate with one another.

popping up, though in the afternoon. i should let you know. >> mammoth is also closing for the season. is there watching that snow begin to melt as well? if you're headed the high country so far, so good that you've got the beautiful conditions out lake tahoe right now. little wind kicking up the waves you can see toward incline village. here's a live camera for you. some of the waves out there on the lake now. but this which got to watch out for especially this time of year in the afternoon, you see these pop-up thunderstorms, they're going to be isolated up over the sierra nevada. but boy, when you get a little moisture up there that could make things very, very dangerous. not only toward the tahoe area, further south in the mammoth area to see the thunderstorms popping up there as well. and that's going to repeat itself as we head through this week. we're not going to be done with that, though. so if you're planning on doing some early-season camping or maybe some boating maybe a little fishing, any out outdoor activity. be careful in the high country to home. yeah. this weather closing down for the ski season, but water skiing going to be popular. 70 degrees south lake tahoe. 72 in truckee, a warm 84 degrees arena on 81 in carson looks

like the weatherman. yeah. you may see some of those pop-up thunderstorms over the next couple of days. watch out for that. as we're going to see some of those showers developing into the afternoon hours. but generally a really nice early start to the day and then things began to change by the afternoon. you see right here in the forecast models too, really just some scattered showers and pop-up thunderstorms. you see those coming back each day. really some nice weather overall. but the afternoon you see those big cumulonimbus towers beginning to develop. if you see that happening, probably best time to head indoors before those really start to get going because you know, this every so often you see some of get struck by lightning out there. and a boy just takes one strike throne. anybody strip. that's for sure. i know you're of planning to go out towards the sea. are you going to the sierra this week? that's not this week. but at some point i will be up there. i love it up there. got to be safe. thank you.

>> president biden laid a wreath as you can see there at the tomb of the unknown soldier earlier this morning, he was at arlington national cemetery in virginia to honor fallen u.s. troops after placing that read, he delivered his annual memorial day address. the president saying that since he took office, he has signed more than 30 bipartisan bills to help veterans. he also remember his son beau who served in iraq and died in 2015 of brain cancer. and as we approach the 80th anniversary of d-day, the legacy of the battle of normandy is being felt in many ways worldwide. >> on the seized, the navy, the navy warship, rather the uss normandy continues to fight for freedom worldwide. marielena bullet. loris takes us on board. >> it's a legacy embedded into the uss normandy. you're carrying forth with you. >> all not only the history of the actual invasion, but all the giants came before us and

make this, you know, 30 plus-year one of the greatest for ships ever to grace united states remnants of a battle 80 years ago filled the really was a catalyst to bring to the the end of one of darkest periods in. >> in the history of the the guided missile cruiser commission in 1989 and is homeported in norfolk, virginia. >> well, the ship recently returned from a lengthy deployment. the entire crew is crossing the atlantic once again to be in normandy for the 80th anniversary of d-day. >> for us to go here. and to witness that moment. this is the ship's commanding officer captain aaron robinson hopes to spend time with d-day veterans. well in normandy. >> i'm looking forward to talking. experience to hives here what it was the impact of that moment. >> something command master chief o'connor hopes resonates

>> the irs free file program is returning for some folks. it's been extended through 2029. those who make less than $79,000 a year are eligible to use it. the irs says the software was used by about 2.9 million taxpayers this year as of may 11th, which is a 7.3% increase over last year. the agency is also testing a new program called direct file for taxpayers to file directly through the irs 13 states. the house officially passed a bill going against a washington, d.c., law allowing non u.s. citizens to cast their ballot. currently there are 16 cities and towns in the united states allowing non-citizens to vote in their local elections.
