pap sentenced to 30 years in prison today. thank you so much for joining us here on kron for news at 3. i'm justine waldman. kron four's tiffany justice was in court this morning. she joins us now live in the newsroom with what david de pap had to say. thanks for joining us. yes, a week and a half ago, david impacted not have a chance to address the federal court before sentencing. >> this morning he did is standing with his attorney by his side to apologetic, telling the judge that he has reconnected with family and promises not to be violent. again, that says in court he was influenced by the january 6 capitol riot judge jacqueline corley stating that the sentence needs reflect the damages and seriousness of this crime. the receive a total of 50 years. the maximum allowed he received 20 years for attempting to kidnap nancy pelosi and 30 years for assaulting paul pelosi with a hammer inside of their san francisco home. the 44 year-old will serve his sentence concurrently, meaning that the total length will be 30 years. pat's ex-wife and

son not agreeing with the sentencing today. lifetime quite harsh, but also white >> now, the path was also given credit for the 18 months. he's been in custody. he's also facing state charges in connection to this and is expected to be back in court tomorrow morning. at 9 o'clock reporting in the newsroom to be justice kron. 4 news. tiffany, thank you so much. san francisco supervisor matt dorsey now sounding the alarm on a new drug making its way into street level drugs. >> doma, dean is a powerful veterinary sedative. and last week nationwide, public health advisories were issued stating that this drug has been driving the recent mass overdose outbreaks in philadelphia, chicago and elsewhere. today, dorsey issued a letter of inquiry to the city to monitor for its

presence. california law enforcement agency sees nearly 6 million fentanyl pills this year. that's according to governor gavin newsom's office. the california national guard's counter drug task force confiscated 5.8 million pills since january. and 2.3 million fentanyl pills last month. in a statement, governor newsom says, quote, illegal fentanyl has no place in our neighborhoods. california is tackling this problem head on by holding drug traffickers accountable and increasing seizures while the same time expanding access to substance abuse treatment options and providing lifesaving affordable reversal medicine to california and statewide. >> san jose leaders are calling for more transparency regarding the city's spending on homelessness. >> this is coming after an april state audit found that the city spent more than 300 million dollars on its homeless response. there are 2 council members here who want to look at hoo much money is being divided into removing

encampments and temporary housing the california state auditor found the city could not identify the money it spent on homeless support, nor does it adequately measure the effectiveness of its systems. the report also says the city lacks enough in term or permanent housing to keep up with the demand. san jose has until september to begin publicly reported data and to build a plan on how it will address homelessness staying in the south bay woman was fatally shot. the man accused of shooting her has now been arrested. this all began around 6 last night. police arrived at north 20th street near san jose high school because of reported gunfire following 2 hours of negotiations, a man surrendered and that's when officers entered the home and found the woman's body. the man and the woman did know each other, but their relationship has not been revealed and their identities have not been released. police in newark looking now for a missing teenager. officials are saying 14 year-old. >> donna gore look was last seen yesterday. he's 5 foot. 8

weighs 130 pounds. police say he was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt, blue gym shorts, grey sox and blue running shoes. if you know where he is contact police. new 3, a big step forward for solano counties, city of the future. officials now sharing a timeline for this billionaire backed california forever development as it inches closer to being on the november ballot, california forever submitted a petition with tens of thousands of signatures on an effort allowed the development to move forward. election officials have until june 12 to verify that the number of signatures meets the minimum threshold to qualify for the ballot. solano county supervisors will ultimately decide whether to place the california forever initiative on the ballot by late july. the group will keep working to build california forever says the city would provide more than 15,000 jobs over the next decade. we're taking a live look outside at the fog.

there's the golden gate bridge there. kind of behind it. and it looks breezy out there meet drives cargo gun in the weather center with details on what's happening outside. yes, some blue skies down to the surface here, but definitely some breezy conditions as we take our eye over to the right side of your screen there you can see where the flag is flying. >> rather quickly, that means that we've got some of that wind picked up temperatures right now as we look from the east bay show that the east bay is one of the warmer spots today. so you can see concord is up to 79 degrees. 76 in livermore. but we're not far behind marin san jose city. at 75 of 60's around the bay there in san francisco and oakland. santa rosa, though, just hit the 80 degree mark. so they're warming up in half moon bay. a little cool. be getting some sunshine in there today at about 57 degrees. so we have some wind that is happening in some gusts. they're going to be going as we roll across the afternoon and the evening. this is a look at that and even into the overnight a little bit before kind of ramps down as we get into tomorrow. so look out for that. if you're going to be driving across bridge is on the way home today. we do have

those blue skies, though. you can see that we do have a little action to the north of us in the pacific northwest. and that is helping to press our ridge of high pressure down just a touch. but that is not stopping the blue skies as you can see. and tonight it is going to be in effect of happy to help you to compress the marine layer a little bit. so means it will have patchy coastal fog, not quite as pervasive on the fog and the marine layer presents tonight. as we had last night, a little bit of a break there. temperatures still in the upper 40's and low 50's. we are warming up starting tomorrow. i'll have details coming up. a group of concerned citizens calling on the alameda county board of supervisors to create oversight committee for the sheriff's department. this body could investigate in-custody deaths at the jail or shootings. >> involving officers kron s terisa stasio spoke with the grassroots organizers who are spearheading this issue not only for alameda but all across the state. >> we believe that sure that all counties should be accountable transparency.

>> on the peninsula, elected officials are asking the state for help paying for safety improvements at cal train crossings. kron 4 s charles clifford has the details. >> there's currently a plan to spend 744 million dollars

improving 3 train crossings to in santa clara county and one here in burlingame. this one particular needs 70 million dollars in state funding. but the california legislature has decided to maybe not provide any money at all. and now local elected officials are trying to get them to change their minds. here in burlingame, the caltrain crossing at broadway in california drive is one of the most dangerous rail crossings in the state over the years. dozens of vehicles and pedestrians have been hit here with multiple fatalities. the state legislature had allocated 113 million dollars in funding to help pay for improvements. here and 2 other rail crossings, one in palo alto, one, another in mountain view. but that funding was recently pulled from next year's proposed budget. this is a massive problem. we have a chance to fix it. let's not miss that window. state senator josh becker who represents the area is leading the charge to try to get that funding reinstated because that's going to leverage hundreds of million dollars to both federal funds and county

and local funds. so this is all ready to go. we're ready to break ground next year, but we need the 70 million with the thought of losing funding. it really does put in jeopardy our ability to get the project caltrain executive director michele bouchard says the transit agency supports the proposed safety improvements were operating an all-time high level of train our ridership is coming back. >> and so we really do need to be able to provide the level of service that the community needs. it's unclear why the funding was pulled from the budget or if governor newsom supports putting it back in. the state legislature has about 2 weeks to decide if that money will be restored in burlingame charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> bart service between 24 street mission and daly city will be suspended this weekend. this includes the glen park and balboa park stations. the suspension will allow crews to make track improvements. unclear. nearby vegetation, free bus rides

temperatures are going to start going on up. so right now you can see that we're looking really good. we don't have a whole lot in the radar except over in the sierra. we've got just a little pop of lightning there a bit high elevations starting to get a couple, a little cells that are rolling. every checkout this is beautiful today. yesterday. we really had quite a bit of gray sky, even though folks are out there trying to take their walk. today is a pretty nice day to do it. as you can see, getting sunshine in there, too. even though the temperatures are still in the 50's. but we're at 79 in morgan hill. we're at 71 in fremont, dublin about 73, 70 degrees in san mateo right now. 75 redwood city. you can see those nice temperatures across the bay and then 82 in pittsburgh head inland, 80 degrees in santa rosa. so obviously the warming up there. so we're starting to get the beginning of this. we are still quite breezy. and as we go through the night tonight, that is not going to let up. so just be ready for that. if you are out and about you might want to take a jacket with you because of the breeze. right? once that gets going, it tends to make things feel a little bit cooler than they actually are. and as you

>> your money this afternoon and a new ballot initiative. california businesses say that they're trying to rein in government spending. this taxpayer protection act would make it more difficult for state and local lawmakers to raise taxes this ballot

proposition would require two-thirds of voters to approve any city or state tax increase. but it is currently being challenged in california supreme court by governor gavin newsom. he wants the justices to kill this proposition before it goes to the ballot. the state argues the proposition would deny the government the money it needs for public safety or fixing streets. but supporters say taxpayers are done getting steamrolled by sacramento. >> the taxpayer protection act ensures that all new taxes have broad support from californians by empowering voters. >> the state supreme court must rule the next few weeks. otherwise voters in november could send a message in california saying that they have had enough. it is rare for courts to intervene before a vote on a profit already qualified for the ballot. opponents worry if passed they won't be able to undo the damage they believe is present in city and state governments.

wireless carrier, t-mobile is buying most of us cellular. the deal is worth nearly 4 and a half billion dollars. t-mobile would acquire. about 30% of usl years. wireless spectrum as part of this deal. it also includes some stores and u.s. cellular customers. the companies do expect this deal to close next year. t-mobile already merge with sprint in twenty-twenty. that deal is for 26 billion dollars. and it could be a sweltering sweltering summer for investors as the probability of a rate cut does not look probable. this is all due to a stronger than expected economic report. and as a result global strategist say the economy may not be cooling as fast as the fed would like. stocks suffered their worst day of the year on thursday. and reaction to that news. the dow dropped what would've been a five-week winning streak ahead of memorial day. next. stop a

police. 2 separate scenes with a barricaded suspect here on saint francis. drive a shelter-in-place has been lifted but investigators are still trying to figure out what happened here on rows brook court police got called to a home here just off of khalil road around 6 o'clock. police say a mom lives there with her 3 daughters and a neighbor came over. >> armed with a gun, threatening them. the family ran out of the home. thankfully they are safe. they called police officers on scene. then heard gunshots coming from inside the home. that's when they put a shelter-in-place for people who live nearby. police were making a plan to get the man out safely when he came out on his own around 8 o'clock, he was armed with a gun. he was then brought into custody. i'm told the man arrested is 47 year-old christian stewart and police are trying to figure out what his motive was drugs and alcohol involved. meanwhile, officers were also at the scene of another

barricaded suspect in an apartment complex on detroit avenue. this scene started around 3 o'clock in the afternoon when neighbors called police saying a man was screaming acting crazy with a blowtorch and waving knives around. police responded and learned the man had been evicted from this apartment a couple of weeks ago and he returned and broke into that unit. police spent hours with a crisis negotiator trying to get him out. a police dog was used to get the man in custody. officers say he was bit by a dog around 8 o'clock tonight and brought to a hospital with minor injuries. police say 35 year-old ahmed davis will be booked into jail afterwards. we saw officers going door to door here on roseburg court, trying to talk with neighbors about what happened. police say a lot more to come with their investigation. i'm sara stinson reporting in concord kron. 4 news. police say at least 5 people including a teenager were shot and sacramento. this happened just after 8 last night in the

neighborhood in south sacramento. officers say the victims were standing outside of an apartment complex when they were shot. >> officials say the victims are expected to survive. officers have not said what led up to the shooting. >> are big message. is it that you saw something or heard something to please let us know, help us find individuals responsible for this. there's a lot of people that were involved in the shooting. we're not sure of all the facts circumstances surrounding this incident. what led up to the shooting. but there are a lot of people that were injured in this and we need to make sure that they receive justice. >> police say one of the shooting victims is a teenage girl. the others, 3 men and a woman in the south bay. we have learned some new details about that fatal crash in san jose. police say that a man driving a sedan was killed after his car veered and then hit a box truck from behind. this happened yesterday afternoon on the corner montague expressway 2 avenues police. are saying that people who work near this intersection say that they see drivers traveling fast and recklessly here.

>> i know that this is very dangerous because i usually walk to catch another bus when there's no route here and i feel kind of and save, you know what i'm doing to cross road. so cars are coming really fast. >> this marks the 19th fatal collision in san jose. this year there were 16 fatal traffic collisions at the same time last year. chemical workers at ucla and uc davis now on strike. they claim that their rights were violated by the university of california during recent pro-palestine protests. the strikes began last week at uc santa cruz have now have expanded to those 2 other campuses. the union representing teaching assistance tutors and researchers say the workers free speech rights were violated. when you see leaders called on police to remove the encampments. the university of california claims the walkouts ere illegal. in the east bay organizations calling for a cease-fire in the middle east, put together a vigil at the lake merritt amphitheater in

oakland. last night's event was called all eyes on rafah. this follows an israeli airstrike that sparked a tent camp fire. and according to hamas, dozens of people were killed. it's unclear if that air strike caused the fire or if secondary explosions possibly from hamas weapons are to blame. israel's prime minister is calling this a tragic mistake investigation now underway and the u.s. is weighing its response to these continued israeli air strikes were called. martin is in dc with the latest. >> and no policy changes to speak to. it just happened. the white house is not laying out any new consequences for israel following a deadly israeli strike near rafah refugee camps the red line president laid out, as i we don't want to see a major ground operation. we haven't seen that at this point. israeli officials insist the strike was targeted and eliminated to hamas. senior officials, however, the fire that erupted killed more than

40 civilians. 8 were children. israel course has a right to go after hamas. but as weve also said many times, almost take every precaution possible to do more to protect innocent life. >> israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is calling the strike a tragic mishap and it is promising an investigation. we will be watching those results closely. the state department says it has many questions about how the fire started. israel suggest hamas stored ammunition nearby not fair housing night, especially as i said when it's >> over a kilometer and a half from the location of the strike. we that happened. many international groups are not awaiting israel's explanation who diplomacy attack and are demanding an immediate cease-fire, citing a growing humanitarian in hunger crisis in gaza. netanyahu is promising to press ahead to eliminate all hamas targets right now, dozens of palestinians are trying to flee rafah israeli air strikes

intensify in washington. raquel martin. >> airlines and passengers reported safety issues with several airlines over the busy memorial day weekend. first, a united plane caught fire yesterday on the runway that plane preparing to take off at chicago's o'hare airport when smoke started coming out of the wing of the plane. a passenger recorded this incident on his phone and says that he felt the impact on his window. once he looked outside, he saw the engine on fire. the plane did have to get towed back to the gate so passengers could deplane. no one was hurt. a spirit airlines flight from jamaica to florida was also forced to return after a reported mechanical issue and a southwest flight from colorado to florida also diverted to because of a a possible a smell of smoke in the cabin. a flight from london to sfo had to turn around mid-air yesterday because of a mechanical issue. in a statement, a spokesperson for virgin atlantic says the

safety and security of our customers and crew is always our priority. and the captain made the decision to return as a precautionary measure. only we like to apologize to customers for the delay and any inconvenience caused. now, these incidents coming as the number of people who flew for memorial day weekend hit record highs. the transportation safety administration reported 2.9 million travelers on friday alone. that is a single-day record. well, some passengers experience delays and other issues. data from flightaware track, fewer than 100 flights canceled on memorial day weekend over the weekend. and as the faa continues to investigate those incidents from the weekend that we just talked about, they are continuing to make sure travelers know that flying is still one of the safest ways to travel in the u.s.. tornadoes continue to tear through the midwest and southern parts of the u.s. leaving dozens dead and hundreds of thousands of people without power. this is what it looked like in dallas today when a disaster

declaration and a tornado warning went into effect. this video taken by christoph paulus. there was another video posted on social media showing lots of trees down, severe wind and rain. you can see the damage go right through the window. we're going to go to our meteorologist kyle going to see what's happening in that part of the country. weather wise right now. yeah, it's been very active in heavy say dallas has quieted down a bit but houston was dealing a lot of this this afternoon. you can see where all the action is a particularly as we get into this heat of the day, which helps to kind of get these going. >> and earlier today, it was really houston. you can see now where some of these have rolled through and now we're headed into places like new orleans. they're causing flooding, which are the boxes that you see there in green. and then they're also causing severe thunderstorms. so that's one spot i'm happy to say. we don't see tornado warnings, but you do start to see them if we move up into the panhandle of texas. so all of the yellow boxes are severe thunderstorm warnings and then the outlines are severe thunderstorm watches, meaning that, you know, we're in that space for this could happen. but then we start to get some

of these popping into tornado warnings. other was one just here. it's now turned into a severe thunderstorm warning. again, this is up in the panhandle, texas. you can see just north of amarillo, but these storms are getting very juiced up very quickly and becoming very violent. so it's something to keep an eye on. unfortunately, we're still in the thick of this. the heat of the summer, of course, helps to get this going. and it isn't until about august that we start to see things at least pull back a little bit. for the next few days, at least we'll be keeping an eye on this. that's for sure. meanwhile, in california, things much calmer. we do have a few lightning will popping up in the sierra right now. just a little bit of a cell up that high elevation. but when we come down to the surface here in the bay area, we're looking pretty nice. temperatures in the 60's around the bay 50's out of the coast and some nice 70's. even a few 80's out there as you head inland. so temperatures are one of the things we're going to be watching the next couple of days here because we take walnut creek example. you can see tomorrow looking out for low 80's, then upper 80's as we get into thursday, thursday and friday looks to

be when these temperatures are going to peak for us and a bit of a warm-up that we've got rolling over the next few days. so thursday and friday, look out because inland spots, upper 80's, even potentially 90 degrees. back to you. oakland, fire crews still cleaning up after massive fire broke out of the lumber yard over the weekend. the flames destroyed a portion of oakland's economy, lumber company. >> kron four's less the good and showed us the damage. flames filled the skies sunday night around the lumber company. >> off of interstate 80 in oakland while no one was injured, the fire spread quickly and ended up destroying at least one building has a large footprint so tight. it's showroom. it's administrative offices. >> a warehouse and then a large lumber yard outside full of for what? so it burned for several hours. michael hunt with the oakland fire department says crews initially struggled gaining access to the lumber yard and the surrounding area property.

new director today. mayor london breed introduced ideally as the new head of this office. she will leave the development of criminal justice policies and represents survivors of violence. lee is a civil rights brings decades of experience working on public safety of victims rights initiatives at the amounts. but today she called on city leaders to step up and help the crime rates in the city. go down. >> so we need the city every single department of this city to stand up and put their money and they are make their words into actual action. they need to support the people in this room and beyond who are doing the work. the office of victims and witness rights was established by a ballot measure approved by voters. >> and has a mandate to consolidate and coordinate city services to advance the rights of victims and witnesses of crime. a major streets and san jose is about to get a whole new look today. hundreds of volunteers help paint a sidewalk mural along

>> governor gavin newsom is facing some criticism over proposed budget cuts. advocates say will hurt thousands of undocumented californians reliant in-home support services. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace spoke with concerned in-home caregivers about what these proposed cuts could mean for them. >> well, the governor says he does not want to make these cuts but feels he has no other choice to help balance the budget. but advocates say they hope he reconsiders this program is a lifeline. panetta is talking about what's known as the state funded in-home supportive services program,

also known as i h s s as the sounds. the program helps pay for in-home assistance and care for eligible seniors. and california is living with disabilities, including my days legally blind mother developed. thanks to ihs a stellar receives funding, allowing her daughter to take care of her day in and day out at their home in madera. >> i am her supporter. you know who cooks cleans and provides daily assistance, anything that you may need but funding she receives from the state to help care for her mother could soon be no more. >> that's because governor gavin newsom is proposing to cut about 94 million dollars from this specific part of the items says program that funds in-home supportive services for about 2,500 undocumented californians, including a stella. if this program is taken away for undocumented recipients, it would be devastating news from many families because there isn't any other program like a justice. >> many undocumented recipients would be left without any other alternatives being too potential health crisis. others in the in-home

supportive care industry voicing outrage over the proposed cuts. it is indefensible for governor newsom to eliminate services for population for no other reason. but for their immigration status. >> undocumented or not, we are all human beings who deserve what health care. >> we have access regardless of immigration status for his part. governor newsom and his office have long said his proposed budget maintains the vast majority of funding for california's public health care medical program. >> and its services. his office referred us to this statement the governor made during his budget presentation earlier this month indicating he would prefer not to make such cuts. but as the state faces a projected multi-billion dollar deficit, he feels he may have no other choice. these are programs that i've long advanced. many of them. none of this is. working. enjoy but you've got to do we have to be responsible. we have to be accountable. >> and members of the legislature now have about 2 and a half weeks to review the governor's proposals and send him a fully balanced budget

reporting at the state capitol. a tom wallace kron. 4 news. >> for your help, california is witnessing another surge in covid cases driven by this new subvariants of the virus. so these 2 subvariants are nicknamed flirt and they're causing concerns about a possible summer uptick in covid infections. flirts now counts for more than half of the infections nationwide. this new mutations don't appear, though, to result in more severe disease. but it is more transmissible than that winter strain. experts say the current vaccine is expected to continue working well, because the new strains are only slightly different from the winter variants. now to an update on that recall of about 70,000 cases of fiji, water bottles due to some contamination concerns. this recall of fiji, natural artists and water bottles began in march. and then issue was the discovery of 3 types of bacteria. >> customers were initially told not to drink the water and to return it to get a

we've got some wind. this is of a mount tam and you certainly get the higher when you get up to higher elevation. and we're seeing that from the east day. some blue skies as well. and again, there is a little bit of cloud cover that's out there. no doubt about it. but compared to yesterday, we're doing a little bit better. temperatures today, a little bit cooler in some spots. you can see up to 80 degrees in santa rosa. upper 70's in concord sunday, 70's around spots like san jose in livermore, san francisco to oakland in the 60's. a little cool out at the coast. half moon bay sitting about 57 degrees. but we've got some sunshine. so that's kind nice. and the wind. looks like not too bad at half moon bay, but we're about 17 miles per hour in san francisco and that sustained wind, meaning the gusts are a little bit higher than that. but this is probably the really nice part about today is just that we're seeing a lot of blue skies out there. we do have that weather to the north of us that is pressing down on us just a little bit, which means that keeps the ridge from being too pronounced of high pressure. so what that does is compress our marine layer a little bit tonight. and you can see our fog cast here is not bad, waking up tomorrow morning.
