evening. across 4 news at 5, i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. police responded to reports of gunfire. >> at the home on north 20th street near san jose high school around 6 o'clock last night when they arrived, police say a man barricaded himself inside after hours of negotiation. he did surrender. officers then found a woman with serious physical trauma inside the home and say she died at the scene. her exact cause of death is still being investigated. >> we're still trying go through the entire investigation, determined you know what occurred in what order? that's again, part of the puzzle that we're trying to put together. we just know that was one loss like that. we did. it architect is again, are doing outstanding job trying to figure out what happened. what went down. do have the suspect in custody and we're just working together to make sure bring justice for the victim and her family. >> police say the suspect and the victim did know each other, but investigators have not revealed their exact

relationship. police say the suspect also shot another manp before police arrived. that victim was treated at the hospital for minor injuries. the identities of the victims and the suspects have not yet been released. this is san jose's 16th homicide of the year at this time last year, 11 homicides have been reported. >> new details tonight on one of the 2 standoffs that happen in concord last night. police say the man forced his way into a home on rose brook court is 47 year-old christian stewart. police say a woman lived at the home with her 3 daughters. there. neighbors were asked to shelter in say they heard gunshots. standoff lasted for a couple hours until stuart came out. no injuries were reported. stewart told officers he entered the home because he was being followed by several people who are arms. police say an investigation revealed there was no evidence to support that story. stuart has been booked multiple charges.

local business is having to delay its grand opening in san francisco this week after thieves broke in, took off with thousands of dollars worth of items leaving the rest of the store untouched. kron four's lezla gooden spoke with the owner in joins us now live in the studio with more tough break. leslie? >> yeah, that's right. now the name of the restaurant is called the pact. now it's located in hayes valley and was set to have a soft opening today. but a strange break into the restaurant has left the owner with many questions and heartbroken. this is chef george howell. we need. he spent the last 6 months getting hit new restaurant zieback sf ready for its grand opening on wednesday had about. >> 8 for house staff can come in today and you know, about 6 back in the house and i and we felt great. >> on cloud 9. but that will change. once he saw this video, surveillance of people breaking into the restaurant and stealing over $15,000 worth of cooking tools.

this when the light is right, there's where we're at the finish line. and this kind of just. yeah, they sure are a little bit. but again, have to move forward. >> and george tells me he plans to add more security. and despite this setback, he still has faith that san francisco will become a better place for businesses and he plans to open in the next week live to see a little bit kron 4 news. all right. let's look. thank you. scott peterson, the man convicted of killing his wife, laci, is set to appear in court via zoom tomorrow. his defense team is trying to get him a new trial by gathering some new evidence. however, the stanislaw county district attorney's office is opposing their motion. the nonprofit representing peterson wants to do a dna test on a rope and a stolen van burned near the petersons home around the time laci went missing. the da's office is asking the judge to deny the motion because of the evidence previously used to convict peterson in 2004. david, the

pact was back in a federal courtroom today to be re-sentenced. >> this new hearing comes after the judge in the case failed to ask pap if he wanted to address the court prior to being sentenced the first time standing with his attorney by his side to pap seems apologetic telling the judge that he has reconnected with family and promises not to be violent. again, the pap said in court he was influenced by the january 6th capitol riot. the pap received the same sentence he did last week when he was first sentenced 30 years in prison for attempting to kidnap nancy pelosi and assaulting paul pelosi, her husband with a hammer in their san francisco halt. >> the paps ex wife and son did not agree with the sentence. a lifetime sentence.

quite also white >> the pap is also facing state charges and is expected to be back in court tomorrow morning. at 9 o'clock. >> concerns tonight over drug overdose deaths in san francisco. health officials believe they could get worse before they get better as they start to see fentanyl mixed with a new animal tranquilizer. it's causing a surge in od's kron four's. dan kerman has details. >> concerns tonight, san francisco's overdose in fentanyl crisis could get worse. a handful of cities across the country including chicago and philadelphia are now starting to see fentanyl laced with melatonin. dean veterinary sedative that is causing a surge in overdoses. >> i've taunting is striving overdose spikes. not all of those suspects are fatal, but their spirits and wine and 600 people over a few days in philadelphia are sent to the hospital because they you know, encountered a drug which

fire officials say they have figured out the origin of this fire that tore through a >> lumber warehouse. the fire was sunday at the economy. lumber company that was on high street right off 8.80. crews were on scene through yesterday to put out hot spots. investigators are still working to find out what caused the fire. our weather time here as we get a live look outside above san francisco. it was a cool start to the day warmed up nicely. pretty breezy out there. that's pretty much the pattern we've been seeing and the winds we really have been dealing with some wind. kathy. >> yeah, it really has been is always a problem. if you have fires to have breezy conditions this morning, lots of gray skies. but now the wind is one of the big stories. you can see the palm fronds behind me whipping in the wind. you can also see should a quite tower? well, yeah, the winds are dancing. the leaves are just really moving quite rapidly now, little earlier that winds were screaming through the golden gate at more than 30 miles per

hour. so relax just a little bit down to 24 miles per hour. and oakland, 16 gameday yet. oracle park 6.45, 0st pitch, sunny and breezy. yeah, 59 degrees. not exactly warming. by the time we get to the 7th inning, 55 degrees. mostly clear skies. more coming up with the 7 day. >> jacket for sure. thank you, kathy. >> the state legislature has pushed back on a 744 million dollar plan to help pay for safety improvements at cal train crossings across the state. one of those crossings at broadway and california drive in burlingame over the years. dozens of cars and pedestrians have been hit at that intersection. multiple fatalities. the state legislature had allocated 113 million in funding to help pay for improvements there. and at 2 other rail crossings, one in palo alto, another in mountain view. but the funding was recently pulled from next year's proposed budget.

shooting gel beads at each other during a memorial day. barbecue which then escalated to at least one adult shooting real bullets. the gunfire resulting in 5 people being shot just feet from this college preparatory school playground. luckily, nobody was on the k through 5 to coy porter college prep campus because of the holiday. but in a statement to parents, the school principal saying in part, quote, in response to yesterday's events, we have increased the presence of staff on campus to ensure the safety and security of all students. additionally, our gates will remain locked until dismissal for our campus security and quote, sacramento police have not yet come forward to announce an arrest, but local community advocate barry axios saying tonight parents must be better role models for their kids. you have to start thinking clear think about the repercussions, the consequences. i think that we get so >> mad, angry and i feel that

so many people allow the eagle to get away with themselves and just moments like this, you're going to hurt somebody. i mean, think about it. we're here right now. you hear the kids played. there's a school, you know, across the way from us, there are some kids that are home. they're out of school. i mean, think about what you're doing. guns. bullets have no name. so whoever you aiming at probably not going to the person that you end up getting and the consequences and repercussions of that are life changing. >> that was zach boetto reporting for us. >> san francisco's health department is encouraging people to get their m-pox vaccinations ahead of the summer season. they recommend the 2 dose vaccination, especially for the lgbtq+ community ahead of pride saying they are likely to be the most affected while there is not currently a rise in m-pox cases in the city, the virus continues to circulate across the u.s. health. officials say more than 50,000 doses of the vaccine were administered last year,

helping they say to spread, helping to stop the spread of m-pox. meanwhile, california, seeing another surge in covid cases driven by the emergence of the new subvariants of the virus. the 2 new subvariants collectively nicknamed flirt now account for more than 50% of infections nationwide. the variants aren't stronger, doctors say, but they are more transmissible. experts say the current vaccine is expected to continue working well, because the new strains are only slightly different from the variance we saw over the winter. >> multiple states continue to be hammered by severe weather. dozens of people have been killed in the path of tornadoes from texas to kentucky. red cross volunteers from the bay area have now been deployed to help those impacted kron four's. rob nesbitt joins us live in studio with more on the work they're doing. rob. >> well, the red cross of northern california has sent a total of 8 volunteers to states impacted by severe weather. 5 of them are in

texas where there's been loss of life and loss of homes. the images out of texas are hard to grapple. homes flattened by powerful tornadoes and dozens of lives lost oklahoma, frkansas and kentucky have also seen their fair share of severe weather day. >> holmes it that's it's rich. been and really damaged. and and >> boarded at supported at all. regina james lives in san mateo with a volunteer with the red cross has. but the last 2 weeks in houston, texas, delivering food by truck to families in need as well as working temporary shelters to those who have had their homes destroyed at our shelter. there was woman who is >> in a wheelchair and blind and didn't have a home to go back to and we're able to provide her and her 2 grandsons. she cares for where they may. the ability to >> have have shelter. james

has worked on disaster recovery operations before for the red cross after hurricanes and wildfires. but this is her first time helping after a tornado working long, 16 hour days. but she does it because this is not her first time in the tornado zone by per se counter with the red cross was on. i was 11 years old. >> and and my small town was struck by 6 tornadoes and one night she remembers red cross volunteers offering food and shelter to her and her neighbors. >> that led to be left a lasting impression on james is why she did not think twice about traveling 1900 miles from san mateo to houston. they're just walking up the how you're doing and what they can do to help and that was formative for me. the red cross is always looking for more volunteers. and james says you can reach out to your local branch about donating your time, money or blood reporting in studio. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. all right. thank you, rob. >> and meteorologist kat, the traps. it is here now with a

look at the weather. >> yes, indeed. and the severe weather continues to parts of texas stretching all the way up into colorado. so we're not out of the woods yet in terms of the extreme weather, you can take a look right here. it's also some severe storms stretching from the gulf of mexico right into louisiana to baton rouge, those areas. so a lot watches and warnings in effect through that part of the country and a lot of what's fueling that, of course, is the heat to see how warm it is. of course, down through dallas. 77, albuquerque, 89 degrees, but goodness gracious take a look at phoenix. 103 degrees. >> 99 at this hour in las vegas, in the 90's in the central valley. fresno little bit above 90 degrees. 91 also in bakersfield area doesn't look great right along the coastline. yes, it's cool. high pressure is in control, but you see the jet stream moving a little bit of head of us little bit north of us. that's keeping high pressure from getting too terribly strong at this point. right

now, we're looking at numbers as our forecast into the 50's and 60's right along the coastline. 66 tomorrow in san francisco 50's up to half moon bay tomorrow. it's just great. we're looking right along the base of shoreline. not so warm yet. just start to head southward. does get little bit warmer. looking at 74 degrees right now it is yeah, out and a little bit warmer as you head down to the south bay, 80 degrees milpitas. and as you head toward the east bay, of course, it pops up a little bit. 82 degrees in dublin, pushing 90 in discovery bay. i wouldn't be surprised to see 90 and yacht bill tomorrow point raise 65 degrees. 77 from mill valley looks a okay here where the lucky ones pretty much going to be seeing the same this week or 2 some changes. we're going to start to see a warm-up. we'll have that 7 day coming up for you in just a little bit. that went thursday, i think in friday will be terribly warm. little bit cooler for the weekend, but not much right. thanks, kathy.

>> part service between the 24th street mission in daly, city stations will be suspended this weekend. that includes the glen park in balboa park stations. this will allow crews to make track improvements. they say unclear nearby vegetation, free bus rides will be available instead between the stations. but people are expected to have delays of about 30 minutes or so, according to bart officials, if you're going to be using those stations. >> still ahead, why a group of concerned citizens are calling for an oversight committee. bernice pay sheriff's department. >> and if you don't have a real id yet, there is still time to get one. new deadline that's out there. when we come back.

>> a big step forward for solano counties, city of the future officials have shared a timeline for the billionaire back california forever development as it inches closer to the november ballot. california forever submitted a petition with tens of thousands of signatures in an effort to allow the development to move forward. election officials have until june 12th to verify the number of signatures meets the minimum threshold to qualify for the ballot. solano county supervisors will ultimately decide whether to place the california forever initiative on the ballot by late july. >> people in berkeley have until 8 o'clock tonight to cast their ballots in the district for special election. 4 people are vying for the open city council seat after kate harrison abruptly resigned in january. candidates include so why

albert vice chair of berkeley's rent stabilization board, local community organizer. alana auerbach. there's also ruben hernandez story chief of staff for councilmember terry taplin and igor to climate policy director. the winner will finish harrison's term which runs through 2026. >> after a series of delays, there is a new deadline for californians to obtain a real id. if they plan to travel domestically next year, you need to have a real id by may 27th 2025. there are no signs of another deferment on this. according to data from the department of motor vehicles, nearly 17 million californians have a real id already. state population is nearly 40 million after the deadline. anyone attempting to travel through an airport security checkpoint or enter a federal courthouse without a real id is going to be turned away information on how to apply for one can be found on the dmv website.
