that it was a multi agency, you know, least various police departments. >> area police departments defending their decision to leak toxic chemicals for training here in elementary school chemicals that last students sept. >> been very, very hard we were one of the hardest hit communities. homeowners are voicing their concerns tonight. they're frustrated as insurance companies start pulling their coverage. when fun time. >> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. >> good evening, everybody. thanks for being with us tonight on kron. 4 news at 10, i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. our top story tonight. the homeowners insurance crisis hitting the community of orinda hard. major insurance providers, state farm and others have already started canceling policies citing wildfire danger. and tonight that city hosted a town hall for homeowners to be able to ask questions about

their insurance policies for sara stinson. joining us live from our end after attending the meeting spoke with some residents to see if that was helpful. sarah would have to say. >> homeowners here in orinda tell me they're either already dropped by their homeowners insurance or they're on the brink of that. many saying they are desperate for answers and solutions. >> and that's basically why i came to see my worst fears were realized and they are. her brown is one of thousands of bay area homeowners experiencing the statewide insurance crisis. first hand. he's lived in orinda for 30 years and recently got told by his home insurance provider that he's being dropped this fall. don't have a plan right now. brown in more than 100 others packed into the library auditorium wednesday night for a town hall with the state department of insurance and the renda mayor, darlene been very, very hard hit. we were one of the hardest hit communities and but it, but it is very emotional. insurance

providers say they are not renewing thousands of policies due to wildfire risk. state farm alone is set to cancel 30,000 insurance is statewide. nearly 2000 of them in orinda. si,ce i'm not going to be renewed come august first that maybe my house will burn down before august and at least enough being so that's how desperate. we all are the state does offer a policy for homeowners who are unable to get insured in the marketplace. it's supposed to be a temporary safety net, but the commissioner's office says 1000 people are applying for it every day. the deputy commissioner explained the state's ongoing plan to stabilize the insurance market. the california sustainable insurance strategy includes requiring insurance companies to write no less 85% of homes and businesses in distressed areas that are identified by the insurance commissioner. the state hopes to complete several reforms by december of this year. but

some say that's too late at the pace. they're walking your year with the patients are dying on the side of the road. and there are your way from getting to the hospital. we do appreciate what the insurance commissioner and the governor are trying to do to speed things out. and we simply keep moving as fast as possible because this is very real. >> is very worrisome. >> another reason people say they're frustrated, inner end as because this community does a lot to mitigate fire us. they spend a lot of time and money to do so yet. insurance companies continue to drop people here. they're even handing this flyer out at the town hall for the second annual wildfire prevention and safety fair is this saturday from 10, 30 until 1 o'clock into the orinda community park. i'm sara stinson reporting live in orinda kron. 4 news. >> and look at our weather here. nice clear skies it was

benjamin netanyahu calling the attack a mistake. was upset. >> in addition to the fact that there's no way universities, there's no more schools and there's nowhere. and all of these are grave mistakes. so the idea is home anymore. grave mistakes can happen before the world finally wakes up and sees what is going on is wrong. >> some students also told us they're calling out the stanford administration for how they've been treating protesters. one student protester told us one of their fellow students was arrested monday during a protest and has not been allowed to return to campus sets. dozens of workers at ucla uc santa cruz and uc davis walked the picket lines for a second day today. they're striking over the treatment of students who have been protesting on campuses. there. several university officials were criticized over the response to the protesting, including ucla is police chief. they say the right to free speech was violated when police used force to dismantle the

encampment and remove the protesters. >> this comes as a top israeli official says the war with hamas is likely to last through the end of the year. israeli military have seized control of the entire length of gaza's border with egypt fighting in the southern city of rafah has forced more than a million palestinians to now escape to the north centering war-torn areas that lack shelter, food, water and other essentials. >> the san francisco sheriff's office is defending its use of chemicals during a training exercise that ended up really adversely affecting people at an elementary school in san bruno. the chemical release was last tuesday. uc berkeley police actually brought canisters with the chemicals in them for a training exercise at the san francisco sheriff's office jail property in san bruno, 20 students and a teacher at port whole elementary school experience burning sensations on their faces. they also had scratchy

throats. some of them. the sheriff's office says the chemicals used do not change over time and had no expiration date on them. and they say the mechanism that deploys the material may have deteriorated over time and they say that means it's less potent. the san mateo county board of supervisors vp can't believe this happened. >> they treated on site. that location is maybe a half mile away. and so here's issue. the issue is and i've said this from the game and had conversations with careful moto. could never happen again. were in 2024, there has to be protocols and processes in place that way. now whats is deeply deeply more alarm. is that now we find out that was a multi agency >> you know, police, various police departments and that we're looking at canisters

that are from the 1960's. that would be disposed. >> the sheriff's office says the canisters were pulled from storage, which they say is a common practice. >> 8 middle school students have been arrested in connection to a fight at a middle school in nevado. police say the fight happened last friday at sinaloa middle school when a group of students assaulted another student. a second student then stepped in to stop the fight and they were also hurt. both of those victims had to go to the hospital. the students arrested are now in juvenile hall. >> investigators have arrested a man who they say assaulted another man at a light rail station. according to deputies. this happened this afternoon on the platform of the vta station in san jose near children's discovery museum. the suspects then reportedly went home and barricaded himself. deputies say they were able to negotiate with him and then arrest him and they say the victim took himself to the

hospital. no word on his condition tonight. it is not clear what prompted the attack. >> in redwood city, a woman was arrested after a car was set on fire. police say that fire broke out in the parking lot of second avenue near highway 101. a witness later showed police video of a woman allegedly starting that fire. she was found at has been booked on charges of arson and resisting arrest. >> one man is dead. another is in the hospital following a shooting in oakland citizen app. video shows police last night on foothill boulevard. new this stanley exit off 5.80, when officers arrived. they say they found one man who'd been shot. he died at the hospital. the second man later showed up at the hospital. he's expected to survive a motive for this shooting is being investigated. >> san francisco leaders say they are seeing progress when it comes to drug related arrests. police say they have made around 3,000 arrests and seize 200 kilos of narcotics over the past year in the

tenderloin and soma neighborhoods. most of the drugs seized were fentanyl and meth. today marks exactly one year since san francisco launched its operation to crack down on drugs in the streets by bringing together local, federal and state officials. >> san mateo county is seeing an increase in the number of people living on the streets according to their latest count in january. more than 2100 people were experiencing homelessness. and that is an 18% increase compared to the previous year. officials also say they increase in people receiving shelter in emergency facilities. redwood city is the most homeless people in the county followed by pacifica. and then you have unincorporated land along the coast. >> muni is receiving almost a 5 million dollars to help improve access to stations for people with disabilities. the federal transit administration has given the agency 4.6 million dollars to help build platforms and install wheelchair ramps at 5 new light rail stops. those stops will be along. the jade church

>> decades after he was found guilty, scott peterson is getting another shot at freedom. that's right. kron four's rob nesbitt reports now from peterson's court hearing in redwood city. >> scott peterson and his lawyers are asking for access to dna that they say will prove lacy was still alive. with pearson left their modesto home to go fishing. 22 years ago on wednesday, the judge allowed access to dna testing of one item. it's been san francisco bay, her husband and the man convicted of her murder appeared in court via zoom wednesday. peterson's lawyers that the los angeles innocence project have filed motions for access to dna evidence they say will prove laci was alive on december 24th and vanish. while peterson was away fishing in san francisco bay, prosecutors with the san mateo da's office have refused to hand over dna evidence unless court ordered

on wednesday. judge elizabeth hill ruled that a piece of duct tape down the lacey's pants. we'll be able to be tested but denied dna testing on 13 other items. peterson's lawyers also claim shoddy police work saying the modesto police department's original investigation allegedly suppressed and lost court documents. they also claim that eyewitnesses who saw laci walking in the neighborhood at times after her husband left modesto, were never interviewed by police. scott peterson is being held at mule creek state prison about an hour east of sacramento. the san mateo district attorneys office will now need to consult with the ags office to determine what lab will do. the dna testing reporting in redwood city. i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. >> meantime, david de pap was back in state court for the attack on paul pelosi today. prosecutors say the pap admitted he broke into the pelosi's home with the intent of holding former house speaker nancy pelosi hostage and he wanted to film her admitting the government was corrupt. this trial is expected to last about 3 weeks

just yesterday and federal courts to pop was sentenced to 30 years in prison. >> in milpitas, police got word of a couple mountain lion sightings this morning. one was seen your fair meadow way about 2 miles from that location. another one was spotted in a mobile home park on dixon landing road milpitas. police sharing this video officials used drones with thermal imaging to try to find the big cat. but to no avail. they couldn't track it down. >> there is also a sighting in san jose today or and of a mountain lion. so definitely a. >> lot of mountain lions walking around. it's not, you know, hard to wonder why it's nice weather there has been for the last couple of days for sure. meteorologist dave spahr is here with us tonight, dave and whether for walking around. yeah, i think the cats will be looking for some snow cones later on this forecast as conditions really start to heat up. that's going to be in the next week. but we got a little break prior to getting there. >> to keep tight by the time

we get to the weekend. >> tomorrow, warming up a little bit more. so come on in. join here, the golden gate bridge. check it out. a bit of haze going on. but on balance, pretty clear. we don't see a lot of redevelopment of fog. one on for tonight. current temperatures as we speak. a lot of readings already in the 60's inland there in the 70's now print with 74 71 pittsburgh. but fairly drier. temperatures really lost a lot of their heat. we're going to 60's. meanwhile, up to the north bay. now, here's the contrast for you from 24 hours ago, a little warmer across most of the district cooler a little bit and some pockets up north. but warmer. that's the trend to remember for tomorrow. futurecast for i did talk about there's some morning fog at the coast, but more importantly, some scattered clouds on the late afternoon. this is all kind what to do about nothing for the most part. it's not really going do much of anything. but cover up a little patches of sky a little bit during the afternoon, get into friday. and here's some deeper moisture can see to the south. but we will have some scattered clouds over the weekend. so we should note that highs tomorrow. we reaching about 90 for antioch,

but most readings inland will be in the 80's to the north. also a lot of the east bay over the east bay hills, east bay shoreline will stay in the 70's. meanwhile, 68 san francisco about 87 going on for san jose. so what's going on for the end of this week and next week our high pressure still in control weekend. interesting. don't get too concerned about this. but yes, there's a weak system. the passes, all the rain stays to the north might get some scattered clouds with all of this. most importantly, on sunday little drop in temperatures. but it's only hiccup and high pressure. reasserts itself to be controlling a lot of the pacific to all the way back to hawaii and points towards the west. check it out. our 10 day forecast for you. and cools off a little bit for the weekend. warming back up to the business of the 90's. you can see towards thursday of next week, much at your 4 zone forecast coming up in a bit. grant. all right, dave, look forward to that. thank you. in the east bay tenants in oakland are suing their landlord after. >> a fire in their apartment building left them without power for a month. kron four's

gayle ong shows us what the tenants described is dangerous. living conditions. >> i don't want to buy, you know, hundreds dollars of food for it to go to waste again, like in january. >> annabelle llanos is one of the dozens of tenants on 26th avenue in oakland's fruitvale neighborhood who are suing the landlord for mold. cockroaches holes in walls, weeks, electrical issues that a lot of the tenants have been dealing with this after an electrical fire back in january. jackie's in erie is the tenants lawyer. they left tenants to fend for themselves for weeks. they left them without utilities or even without real housing. the landlord is someone who doesn't live in oakland but bought this property in oakland hoping to >> make a profit off of. >> not making repairs. milano says electricity has been restored to most of the units, but 4 units have yet to be repaired and are being powered by a generator that sits outside her window and it makes her family feel sick from the fumes. know we've

been enduring for over 4 months >> being on temporary light, we don't know this building would power a power off again. the lawsuit is seeking compensation for the thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses due to lack of electricity and heat, including food, medicine, clothing, blankets and hotel stays. tenants are also seeking assistance from the alliance of californians for community empowerment, a nonprofit tenants rights organization that works with renters across california, including in oakland, valerie bachelor is the executive director. there are multiple families with multiple children. >> and these kids have had to go through not having power, not hot water, not having a refrigerator where they can store not only their food medicine. >> and kron 4 reached out to the landlord of this building. we have not yet heard back, but we are told the land more plans to meet with the tenants about the situation on friday in the studio. gayle ong kron. 4 news. as home prices keep

climbing a bill at the state capitol aims to level the playing field for families. today. the state assembly. >> passed a bill preventing some big corporations from buying single family homes to turn them into rentals. this bill was authored by assembly member alex lee, who represents parts of alameda and contra costa counties. the bill now heads to the state senate. uc berkeley set to receive 1.2 million dollars from the state to help provide tuition to people of color who are aspiring leaders. they plan to partner up with the oakland, san francisco and west contra costa unified school districts. according to the university, they were selected because of their dedication to social justice and equity in education. >> coming up, the search for burglars that police say stole $30,000 worth of medals from uc berkeley. plus, a bill banning transgender and lgbtq notification policies takes a big step forward. and the new

merchandise. police arrested all 7 suspects and recovered stolen items. they say including makeup diapers, batteries and vitamins. >> nearly 2 months after his homes were raided, the federal investigation into sean diddy combs appears to be ramping up. investigators are reportedly getting ready to bring some of his accusers before a federal grand jury reporter samantha cortez. he has been following the case. >> a boiling point into the investigation into sean diddy combs. sources say federal investigators, are interviewing combs accusers in 8 civil lawsuits, some multiple times signaling the u.s. department of justice is moving toward an indictment. feds are reportedly telling accusers they may have to testify in front of a grand jury in new york city, cnn reports federal investigators contacted a man who's in a video performing acts,

capitol as lawmakers took up a bill that would forbid school districts. >> from notifying parents if their kids identified as transgender came out as lgbtq+. kron four's dan thorn joins us live in the studio tonight with details there. grant, emotions and passions ran high today as parents protested outside the state capitol. once i'd argue that parents should be notified while others say doing so puts kids lives at risk. the legislation would also forbid teachers from outing children to their parents unless a child gives permission so far, at least 8 school districts in the state have implemented such policies. some parents argue it can be harmful to students, mental health. while others say it keeps parents aware of what's going on with their child. >> it is a safety issue. these policies are harming our students. and i know that because they reach out to me and they tell me and they tell me how unsafe they are. and in fact, it makes all lgbtqia kids unsafe triangulate. the

parents. >> from what's happening in the school with the teachers in the school counselors. how can a parent care for their child? >> the democratic majority approved the bill to get rid of its notification policies. however, the debate still rages on because it must go before the senate health committee. well. >> dan, thank you. there are efforts at the state capitol to regulate artificial intelligence companies in california. the state is home to many of the biggest ai companies in the world. lawmakers are advancing measures to address discrimination through the use of ai, particularly for hiring employees. another bill would ban deepfakes involving politics or. lawmakers also want to protect workers and hollywood from being replaced by ai-generated clones and ad companies may soon be required to disclose what data they use to train their models. votes on these bills are expected in the coming months. a wildfire

forecasting system is now in the works. that >> would be the first of its kind and could potentially save lives. the university of hawaii created it in the wake of the deadly wildfires in maui. and it would combine climate and historical wildfire data and used ai technology to pinpoint at-risk areas. it is expected to have real-time maps that are able to predict wildfire risk about a day ahead of time. >> or if it probably be wi-fi, i couldn't around 0.1. it means that there is a very low-risk up wi-fi that the so on that day. if they like the problem because 0.9 or 0.9, 5 meetings, that is the highlight. he put our risk of wildfire. you know, at that big so on that particular day. >> state lawmakers say they plan on having the system up and running at about 2 years. >> now to our 4 zone forecast as we take a live look across the city tonight. it was a nice, warm day. nice blue

inland valleys. here's some of that fog trying to develop, as you can see into friday and some scattered clouds along with that into friday night. back to those winds. now on shore. they're going to be going to be very time contention. so it's probably fair to call all of this. our local winds that we tend to get with that inland heating like that, that tends to drive the winds, unlike some of the more some uptick, winds will get a little bit by the weekend as we see a weak system of our backyard. mostly clear, mild got 50's going on tonight. tomorrow, a few scattered afternoon clouds which kind of what to do about nothing hot, inland, cool at the coast and then heading into the weekend here looks like saturday is going to be more cloud-free then sunday from this vantage point. but temperatures on both accounts will be a little cooler. bigger picture here is this high. this kind of moves around. but want to note this week system dropping across our region, throw some clouds. cool us off. just a touch. we warm back up again into next week as that high reasserts itself. what's it look like? the 4 zone forecast? here's where the numbers are shaping up. 68 san francisco to be
