don't have any cool downs ahead of us. skies are nice and clear out there across the bay, including right along the coastline. take a look at this view at half moon bay right here without a single cloud in the sky. looks a lot like yesterday. did so fog. obviously not much of an issue. no chances of rain ahead of us either. and this weekend, we are in for a change from last weekend. just a little breezy and brisk at times, winds have completely calm down. now and temperatures will rise pretty quickly today. right now we're sitting in the 40's 50's at the coastline. well, 50's to 60's for inland spots as we've stayed all night long for areas like pittsburgh in vacaville later on today, highs in the 70's 80's and even a couple of low 90's. and tomorrow looking very toasty as well of more in this forecast. still to come right i don't think even that well, that morning commute is already starting to build. we're getting busy. >> the bay bridge a 23 minute ride. thankfully, no accidents or hazards on any of your bridges this morning. but you're going to see a lot of

traffic. 19 81 runs a little slow going on. the san mateo bridge. you're just summer filbert about 15 minutes, golden gate bridge around. 22. and if you are taking bart, here's something to note. 20 minute delay on the sf line in all directions. they're doing some maintenance on the track so that slowing you down. darya. james, back to you. thanks a lot. right let's get back to the breaking news we're following. and after a fire happened at a local public market in castro valley talking to people and firefighters, was a big fire to the whole place. apparently ruined crawford's michael thomas there at the scene. michael. >> you know, you can really see just how bad the damage is now that the sun is starting to come up. take a how county fire calling this building a total loss of 3 alarm fire at lake chabot public market, which sits on a lake chabot road. and you can see that roof completely gone to get the perspective of just how bad it was. take a look. this is video from earlier this morning at around 3 o'clock or so. >> officials say they got the

call that around 2.20 at that point, they did arrive to find those flames going through the roof. and you can see those flames really not only is sparking up into the sky for breaking out the markets, windows everything in sight as of this morning is completely burned or drenched with water. >> as of now, the cause is still unknown. there is a gas line inside, but everything is still being investigated. according to officials, there were no injuries to report, but the neighbors here say, but this is a really special place to this community and they're sad to see it. go. take a listen. >> down here like i'm down ice cream. after dinner. we'll come get >> back out here live. you can see fire officials still putting out some of those hot spots from above at alameda county fire is leading this situation. however, they called in reinforcements from neighboring fire, firing agencies to help them in

total. we're seeing about maybe 50 firefighters or so. and there's multiple engines from what i can see there is for. and then a couple of fire trucks as well. now the owner is finally did arrive this morning. owns one of the storefronts inside. he is still very much in shock. he was not ready to chat on camera, but he was really sad about the situation. he says he's still trying to process. all of it is he woke up early this morning and got the news as we get more details from fire officials on the cause or hear from one of those owners. we'll keep you updated that severely to turn castro valley and michael thomas, tara and james. we'll send it back to the studio. michael, thank you. >> 702. and another developing story that we're following is the aftermath of a big fight. 8 students in nevada were arrested after a fight on campus and that's leaving parents now but worried about the safety of their kids. we have kron four's will tran out there sinaloa, middle school with more on this. will. >> many parents are keeping their kids home from school during this particular week as

the school district is trying to sort this out. we're seeing possibly a parents showing up at this very moment. but you can see that car in the parking lot. and i try to talk to an administrator and she had no comment as she kept going right by me. but we do know that 8 students were arrested on tuesday after a fight that took place on campus a few days earlier on friday afternoon at sinaloa middle school, there was possibly a fight a day before, but the school district as well as the school, they caught wind of it and they prevented on thursday. but actually delayed it because it actually took place one day later on friday with 8 kids being ultimately arrested. >> their ages shocking between 12 and 14 years old. the video quite graphic. we do see kids on the ground being punched. my other kids. it's a he say she said situation. some parents believe that the kids on the ground being punts were actually the bullies and the

victims are actually trying to retaliate defend themselves. and others are saying no, the kids on the ground, they are the victims. but one thing that everybody can agree on that bullying has been an ongoing problem. that's in the low and middle school for quite some time and nothing has been done about it to the point where even on tuesday night the parents met with the administrators to try to hammer something out at this particular point. we do know that school is in session. we will try to get reaction from parents. the school will have extra resources terms of security officers on campus to try to help the students move about without any violence taking place and then a battle police department. they have already mentioned if the school district calls them in asks for help, they will be here. in the meantime, it is been so serious that many charges include james and area felony assault. back to you. thank you very much. well. >> 705 right now in 20 years

after a jury found him guilty of murdering his pregnant wife, laci scott peterson is trying once again to get his freedom. yeah, his lawyers have been arguing that dna evidence should be introduced into this case to prove his innocence cropper was rob nesbitt reports on what happened in court. scott peterson and his lawyers are asking for access to dna that they say will prove lacy was still alive. with pearson left their modesto home to go fishing. 22 years ago. >> on wednesday, the judge allowed access to dna testing of one item. it's been 22 years since the bodies of laci peterson and her unborn child. conner washed ashore in san francisco bay, her husband and the man convicted of her murder appeared in court via zoom wednesday. peterson's lawyers, but the los angeles innocence project have filed motions for access to dna evidence they say will prove laci was alive on december 24th and vanish. while peterson was away fishing in san francisco bay, prosecutors with the san mateo da's office have refused to hand over dna evidence unless court ordered on wednesday. judge elizabeth

hill ruled that a piece of duct tape down the lacey's pants will be able to be tested but deny dna testing on 13 other items. peterson's lawyers also claim shoddy police work saying the modesto police department's original investigation allegedly suppressed and lost court documents. they also claim that eyewitnesses who saw laci walking in the neighborhood at times after her husband left modesto, were never interviewed by police. scott peterson is being held at mule creek state prison about an hour east of sacramento. the san mateo district attorneys office will now need to consult with the ags office to determine what lab will do. the dna testing reporting in redwood city. i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 76 and authorities have now identified a man who was shot and killed in belmont last friday. it's 27 year-old deontay gayden from san francisco. >> who was shot near irwin and hiller streets just off of 101, when police found him there, he had several gunshot wounds still searching for the suspect. now.

>> in the east bay, one man is dead and another in the hospital following a shooting in oakland. we have video here from the citizen app showing police tuesday night on foothill boulevard right near the stanley exit off of 5.80, when officers arrived. they say they found one man who'd been shot. that person died at the hospital. then a second man later showed up at the hospital to he, though, is expected to survive. motive into the shooting is still being investigated. >> take a look at this milpitas police said have a mountain lion sighting that they're investigating. this was. 04:30am, in the morning yesterday. imagine despite your house, this is unfair meadow way in milpitas. police are still looking for that big cat. and that's the second sighting that they've had. milpitas wonder if this the same as pretty big too. this was at a mobile home park in on dixon landing road in milpitas. and they went out there with drones and thermal imaging imaging trying to find this big cap. but they couldn't track him down.

>> in the east bay, this is what it looks like inside in apartment building on 26 avenue in oakland's fruitvale district. it's not the best of conditions. and top of that, the building hasn't had power for a month now following a fire back in january. tenants are now suing the landlord saying that landlord has made none of the repairs or reimburse them for loss of food or medication. the hotel stays that they've had to pay for no reimbursement there. either. one tenant says that while electricity u.s. has been restored to most of the units in that apartment building, 4 units are still being powered by a generator. a generator that sits outside her window. now she says the fumes have been making her family sick. >> we've been enduring for over 4 months now. i'm being on temporary light. we don't know when this building would power a power off again. >> kron 4 reached out to the landlord of the building. we haven't heard back yet, but

we're told the landlord does plan to meet with the tenants about the situation on friday. we'll see what they have to say. san mateo county now seeing an increase in the number of people living on the streets, according to their latest count back in january, more than 2100 people are experiencing homelessness. that's an 18% increase compared to the previous year. officials also say they saw an increase in people receiving shelter in emergency facilities. redwood city has the most homeless people in the county followed by pacifica and then unincorporated land along the coast. >> 709, is the time and a well-known bakeries. serving up moshi doughnuts and muffins around the bay area. now they're opening. they have 2 shops in area, but they're closing their san francisco location over the weekend. it's called 3rd culture bakery and they announced that their inner sunset locations, but going to be closing after sunday, june 2nd, that store on irving street opened back in 2022. so has been there all that long. but the owners decided they get to sell it.

they said that they're just too many challenges in finding and retaining workers. 3rd culture does have, like i said, those 2 other area locations in berkeley and walnut creek. 7.10, right now. and still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news, homeowners in the east bay talk about their concerns from losing health insurance policies. i meet her home insurance policies. >> we didn't see that happen around the bay. and then look at this. a cowboy in the east bay is arrested. he pulled out his cell phone to record police responding to something that he wasn't even involved they ended going after him. and after the break, expect to see some improvements at muni stations will tell you where. >> and today going to be even warmer. one than yesterday was keeping the sunshine around. lot of 70's and 80's, even a couple 90's. i've got your forecast and temperatures start to get really busy in the 8 o'clock hour. but we're already starting to build out already starting to build out there. drive times are networko network for business.

extended forecast into the weekend and next week, looking outside at future cast, a couple of clouds passing by late on today as today. and tomorrow, though, we don't have a lot of fog in this forecast. we will start to see fog streaming back into the golden gate friday night into saturday morning saturday. temperatures will dip a little bit because of some of that ocean. cool there that makes today. and tomorrow, the warmest saturday and sunday still warm, but definitely not quite as hot. today's highs in the 60's and 70's for a staff and 60's at the coast. if you're looking for the coolest scape, those are your spots and some sunshine out there, too. which will make those temperatures feel nice. 70's 80's and a couple of 90's elsewhere, santa clara, 84 san jose. 86 east bay temperatures 70's to a tease for you near 90 in concord. well, oakland at 75 degrees. north bay temperatures. some of our hottest, in fact, vacaville at 92 pittsburgh in antioch, also reaching the low 90's at 90 degrees. each looking ahead, tomorrow's temperatures around

>> okay. developing news in inmate who escaped to southern california correctional facility has been arrested all the way up here in san jose. 38 year-old daniel lypez seville there's a valid escaped. the san benito correctional facility in hollister on tuesday. the sheriff's office says he jumped over a barbed wire fence ane says his girlfriend allegedly helped him escape. he was arrested last night at a hotel in san jose. sheriff's office says that's of allah associates with the with northern gang members and is charged on several felonies, including child abuse. the santa county sheriff's office is moving into its new headquarters this week. it will fully open its doors to the community on the first monday in june. the new state-of-the-art headquarters is located at 3.30, bradford street in downtown redwood city. >> time now 7.20, and we want to turn to the trump hush money trial going on in new york city and that jury began deliberations yesterday. no verdict reached just yet. but our washington correspondent, basil john, has the very latest from new york.

>> the jury was dismissed yesterday around 4 in the afternoon. jurors must now consider all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. and the jurors must be unanimous to convict. >> former president donald trump and the rest of the country must now wait for the 12 jurors to deliver a verdict in the hush money trial. we already have to wait outside the courtroom yesterday. trump continue to accuse the judge of putting him into unfair situation. we had a fair chance, the jury will determine whether trump is guilty of 34 felony charges of falsifying business records involving hush money payments to adult film star stormy daniels before the 2016 presidential election. the jurors have to talk about who they believe who they disbelief, why they just believe why they believe georgetown law professor gregory mize says this could be a lengthy deliberation, how much the jurors need to consider. it is a big task.

>> it's 74 and with how much it's cost. and to have kids in day care centers in california, san francisco's mayoral candidate mark farrell is trying to help out. he held a news conference. he's white plans to today. he's going to talk about his plans to establish universal health care for children in san francisco. he says the state reimbursement rates failed to cover the true cost of child care, which creates a financial strain on families. he says that parents spend on average about $40,000 a year between infant and preschool care. a popular asian grocery chain is opening in the east bay korean grocery store. h mart is opening a shop in pleasant 10. that will be the bay area's 4th location. the stores can open at the dublin retail center right next to the stoneridge shopping

center. the dublin h mart will also have outdoor dining to complement its mega food hall that has a variety asian cuisines. no word yet on exactly when that location open. >> meantime, dozens of shuttered. 99 only stores could reopen as dollar tree stores. dollar tree has made a bid. now for the 170 closed $0.99 stores here in california and across arizona, nevada and texas. $0.99 stores originally opened back in 1982. and quickly expanded to 371 locations before ultimately going out of business. this past april dollar tree also operates family dollar stores in california. we'll take a break as we're approaching 7.26. this morning. up next, a massive fire breaks out at a popular market in castro valley and proper. michael thomas is there live at the scene with the very latest will happen in just a few minutes.

kron four's michael thomas is standing by out in front of that very market. good morning, michael. >> hey, everyone. you know, you can see behind me just how massive this fire was. in fact, take a look. you know, that roof is completely gone. and firefighters are on the continue to try to put it out. it's lake chabot, public market. and again, it caught fire this morning and it just took everything out. take a look at this video. we have it started at around 2.20, or so. and this is video from around 3 officials say they got here and they saw those flames going through the roof and breaking out the markets, the windows, everything inside this morning, completely either burned or really just drenched with water. and as of right now, the cause is still unknown. officials say there is a gas line that's inside that when they arrived, it was adding more fuel to that fire. they don't know if it was because everything's still under investigation. neighbors tell us this a building has been owned by many people. it's always been either a market or now, you know, this

morning who owns one of the stores and side of it. she says she got the call this morning from the actual building owner. and i actually did see her arriving care. she was just shocked to see all of the con. as for what's next. she says she's still trying to figure that out, but hear from home or within the next hour or so. so as we get more details from fire officials what may have been, the cause will continue to keep you updated. but that's all we know for now. i'll send it back to to live in the studio. all right. thanks a lot. want to go to a yes to a fire for homeowners as well now, yes. so the homeowner insurance crisis is getting worse and worse, especially for folks who live in. >> healy tree lined areas like orinda. and so last night the city actually hosted a town hall meeting so that people could ask questions about their insurance policies. for sara stinson explains what happened. >> homeowners here in orinda tell me they've either been dropped by their home insurance company or they're on the brink of that. many saying they are desperate for answers and solutions. that's

basically why i came to see my worst fears were realized in they are. her brown is one of thousands of bay area homeowners experiencing the statewide insurance crisis. first hand. he's lived in orinda for 30 years and recently got told by his home insurance provider that he's being dropped this fall. don't have a plan right now. brown and more than 100 others packed into the library auditorium wednesday night for a town hall with the state department of insurance and the renda mayor. darlene, gee, you have been very, very hard hit. we were one of the hardest hit communities and but it, but it is very emotional. insurance providers say they are not renewing thousands of policies due to wildfire risk. state farm alone is set to cancel 30,000 insurance is statewide. nearly 2000 of them in orinda think it's really, really hard and it's it's terrible when you get dropped. the state does offer a policy for homeowners who are unable to get insured in the marketplace. it's supposed to be a temporary safety net, but the

commissioner's office says 1000 people are applying for it every day. the deputy commissioner explained the state's ongoing plan to stabilize the insurance market. the california sustainable insurance strategy includes requiring insurance companies to write no less 85% of homes and businesses in distressed areas that are identified by the insurance commissioner. the state hopes to complete several reforms by december of this year. but some say that's too late patients are dying on the side of the road. and there are your way from getting to the hospital. and we simply ask, keep moving as fast as possible because this is very real is very worrisome. even handed out this flyer here at the town hall for the second annual wildfire prevention and safety fair is this saturday. it's at the community park and it starts at 10 30. i'm sara stinson reporting in orinda kron. 4 news. >> 7.35 is the time investigators have a group arrested a man who they say

assaulted another man at a light rail station. so according to deputies, the assault happened yesterday afternoon on a platform of the vta station in san jose right near children's discovery museum. the suspect then reportedly went home and barricaded himself inside. deputies say they were able to ultimately negotiate his surrender. he's now under arrest. deputies say the victim took himself to the hospital. no word on his condition and it's still unclear what prompted the attack. in redwood city. a woman has been arrested now after a car was set on fire. police say that fire broke out the parking lot of second avenue right near highway 101. the witness later showed police video of a woman starting the fire. they think they found that woman. she's been booked now on charges of arson and resisting arrest. time now 7.36 richmond man accuses police of assaulting him. >> while he was trying to y're responding to an and now a lawsuit's been filed against the city. we have kron four's dan kerman with the story. but they they

state's reserves. lawmakers say the state's rainy day fund has helped, but they acknowledge it's a tough budget year. >> we know the revenues generally coming in lower than the forecast and that's concerning. and so we are prepared for some very difficult choices >> you know, the governor made a quote a number months ago. i think what you know about budget is a reflection of your priorities, right? and so i really do hope the governor proves that out. you know, for all californians. >> the assembly and senate budget committees are set to review this proposed plan in the coming weekend. lawmakers have until june 15th to pass a fully balanced budget and send it to the governor's desk. it's 7.49 and new data from the u.s. census bureau shows california is one of 8 states that has seen its population shrank in the last year. the overall decrease was just point 2%, but some larger cities saw some bigger drops. and that includes anaheim and
