>> while alameda county fire tells me essentially this is now a complete loss and you can see behind me that 3 alarm structure fire completely took out. this one's public markets ruvin everything inside is pretty much completely destroyed. now there are no longer putting water on it. but there's still firefighters here on scene. and to give you a perspective of just how bad this fire was. take a look. this is video from around 3 o'clock this morning. it's lake chabot public market and it sits on lake chabot road. you can see those flames going through the roof and breaking up the markets windows completely. those planes just massive and everything inside this morning, as i said, completely learn or drenched with water. and as of now, the cause is still unknown. there is a gas line inside. however, everything is still under investigation, according to fire officials, there were no injuries reported, but we did speak with one of the store owners this morning. she says she's devastated and she really doesn't know what's next. but take a listen her reaction when she found out.

valley and michael thomas. back live in the studio. hey, thank you, michael. it looks least a air looks a lot better all right now to another developing story this morning, 8 students in nevada arrested now after a huge fight broke out on campus. leaving parents now worried for the safety of their children kron. four's will tran has been out there all morning long following this at sinaloa middle school will. what are people saying? >> well, a lot of people are fearful for their children because we've heard reports that some of them are keeping their kids at home, at least for this particular week. we won't zoom in, of course, on any of the kids because they are minors. but you can clearly see right behind me that they are showing up right now. school is starting to wind down for the end of the year. i can tell you that on tuesday, about 4 days after the incident that took place on campus, that's when the nevada police department came in and arrested 8 kids at this school ranging between 12 and 14 years old for a fight that took place at 1 o'clock in the

afternoon. it's a he said she said situation. but we've seen the video and it's quite violent. we see a couple of girls on the ground being hit by other girls on top of them. eventually it was broken off, but they did their investigation and they were arrested and the charges include conspiracy as well as felony assault moving forward. and i just got done talking to the spokeswoman for the district and we will have her reaction coming up at 9 o'clock, at least on tape. but she did talk to me about 2 minutes before i went on television and she said that they did bring in extra resources, extra adults, counselors to try to mediate some of the conflict that's being taking. that's been taking place at this particular school. we do know that a lot of parents are frustrated claiming that bullying has been going on for quite some time at sinaloa middle school with nothing being done. the district's spokeswoman said she does not agree with that. that bullying

does happen and middle schools that that's not unique to this particular school, 2 incidents that you have to keep in mind, james and darya. there was a possible incident on thursday. the school caught wind of that and they stopped the fighting rainy violence from taking place on thursday. but then on friday, the incident that was caught on camera. i asked her about that like, well, it happened 24 hours later, she said that completely caught them off guard that they were not aware of any potential tension that would explode into violence on friday. but so they're fully aware of what's going on. they're doing their very best that they can, including having extra police officers. excuse me, resource officers on campus. see if some of them are actually right in front of the school showing a presence and the principals and vice principals are told to be vigilant during this time. >> all right. thanks a lot. we'll 806, is the time. and

now they say scott pierce in 20 years now after a jury found him guilty of murder. scott peterson now trying once again to gain his freedom. his lawyers wanted 14 pieces of evidence tested for dna. they got one crop drop. nesbitt has more. scott peterson and his lawyers are asking for access to dna that they say will prove lacy was still alive. with pearson left their modesto home to go fishing. 22 years ago. >> on wednesday, the judge allowed access to dna testing of one item. it's been 22 years since the bodies of laci peterson and her unborn child. conner washed ashore in san francisco bay, her husband and the man convicted of her murder appeared in court via zoom wednesday. peterson's lawyers, but the los angeles innocence project have filed motions for access to dna evidence they say will prove laci was alive on december 24th and vanished while peterson was away fishing in san francisco bay. prosecutors with the san mateo da's office have refused to hand over dna evidence unless court ordered on wednesday. judge elizabeth

hill ruled that a piece of duct tape down the lacey's pants will be able to be tested but denied dna testing on 13 other items. peterson's lawyers also claim shoddy police work saying the modesto police department's original investigation allegedly suppressed and lost court documents. they also claim that eyewitnesses who saw laci walking in the neighborhood at times after her husband left modesto, were never interviewed by police. scott peterson is being held at mule creek state prison about an hour east of sacramento. the san mateo district attorneys office will now need to consult with the ags office to determine what lab will do. the dna testing reporting in redwood city. i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. >> and to another developing story now in inmate who escaped to southern california correctional facility has been arrested in san jose. 38 year-old daniel lopez zavala. escaped from the san benito correctional facility in hollister on tuesday by jumping over a barbed wire

fence and they say his girlfriend to help as well. he was arrested last night at a hotel in san jose as of allah. and is so is associate with a northern gang members and he now faces several felonies, including child abuse. it's 808, and in the east bay, one man is dead. another is in the hospital. there was a shooting in oakland that happened in the citizen app. has the video of the scene here. it was tuesday night on foothill boulevard in the stanley exit off of 5.80. and you can see the police response there. they found a man who had been shot and he ended up dying at the hospital and then a second man ended up at the hospital himself. he is expected to survive. they're still investigating the motive. >> the san mateo county now seeing an increase in the number of people living on the streets, according to their latest counts, which was done back in january. more than 2100 people were experiencing homelessness, which is about an 18% increase over the same time last year. officials also say they've seen an increase in people receiving shelter in

emergency facilities. redwood city apparently has the most homeless people in the county followed by pacifica and then unincorporated land along the coast. well, as home prices keep climbing a bill at the state capitol aims to level the playing field for families. the state assembly passed a bill yesterday preventing some big corporations from buying single family homes to turn them into rentals. it was authored by assembly member alex lee, who represents parts of alameda and contra costa county. the bill now heads to the state senate. we'll see where it goes. >> it's 809, and a bakery well known for cheat doughnuts and muffins is closing their san francisco location this weekend. 3rd culture bakery is announcing that the inner sunset location is going to close after business on sunday, june 2nd, the stores on irving street. it first opened in 2022, but the owners say that they decide to sell it because they've had such challenging time finding and retaining good employees. 3rd

culture has to other locations still open in the bay area. berkeley and the other in walnut creek. popular asian grocery chain is opening in the east bay korean grocer h mart. >> is opening in pleasant 10. this will be their 4th location here in the bay. the stores can open at the dublin retail center right next to the stoneridge shopping center the martin doubling dublin 8 mark h mart will have the outdoor dining to compliment. >> the mega food hall featuring a variety of asian cuisines. we don't know the exact date, though, when they're opening. it's a 10 and still ahead on the kron 4 morning news. >> homeowners in east bay are worried this morning they left this meeting about home insurance with a little consolation. their concerns kuz insurance companies have been dropping them and also still ahead, there's a new report that indicates elementary students have been exposed to an expired chemical during police training exercises. we're going to see how the sheriff's office is responding.

>> 8.13, right now and the homeowner insurance crisis is hitting of the community of are in the it's very hilly, lots of trees. and last night the city hosted a town hall for homeowners there. so they could ask questions about what they got to do now because some of them have lost lost their policies. kron four's sara stinson takes a look. >> homeowners here in orinda tell me they've either been pdropped by their home insurance company or they're on the brink of that. many saying they are desperate for answers and solutions. that's

basically why i came to see my worst fears were realized and they are. her brown is one of thousands of bay area homeowners experiencing the statewide insurance crisis. first hand. he's lived in orinda for 30 years and recently got told by his home insurance provider that he's being dropped. this fall have a plan right now. brown and more than 100 others packed into the library auditorium wednesday night for a town hall with the state department of insurance and the renda mayor, darlene, gee, you have been very, very hard hit. we were one of the hardest hit communities and but it, but it is very emotional. insurance providers say they are not renewing thousands of policies due to wildfire risk. state farm alone is set to cancel 30,000 insurance is statewide. >> nearly 2000 of them in orinda think it's really, really hard. and it's it's terrible when you get dropped. the state does offer a policy for homeowners who are unable to get insured in the marketplace. it's supposed to be a temporary safety net, but

the commissioner's office says 1000 people are applying for it every day. the deputy commissioner explained the state's ongoing plan to stabilize the insurance market. the california sustainable insurance strategy includes requiring insurance companies to write no less 85% of homes and businesses in distressed areas that are identified by the insurance commissioner. the state hopes to complete several reforms by december of this year. but some say that's too late. patients are dying on the side of the road and there are your way from getting to the hospital. and we simply ask, keep moving as fast as possible because this is very real is very worrisome. even handed out this flyer here at the town hall for the second annual wildfire prevention and safety fair is this saturday. it's at the community park and it starts at 10 30. i'm sara stinson reporting in orinda kron. 4 news. >> it's a 60 right now and we're talking about the weather. and i was just was i complaining. said it was hot.

be. but still on the warmer side of things for sure, you can see not a lot of fog in the forecast as we make our way through the next couple of days. fog does stream back through the golden gate on friday night into saturday morning, though, and we will likely see a bit of a grey start saturday, but that moderating effect on temperatures will make for a really comfortable afternoon. now, today's daytime highs, as i mentioned, are going to be warmer, still mild towards the coast. the 60's and 70's on tear it down in the 50's half moon bay, you'll get to 64 later on today. san bruno at 67 where a 70's to low 80's down the peninsula and the south bay getting close to 90 morgan hill and saratoga at 87 degrees. each east. bay temperatures, 70's 80's for you or one of those spots closer to 90 conquered. even closer yet up to 89. well, a few low 90's in antioch, pittsburgh, and a vacaville today. a look ahead does show that today and tomorrow will be the warmest of this week's forecast. get a bit of a

no verdict just yet one might come out today. >> we have our dc correspondent basil john in new york following the story. >> the jury was dismissed yesterday around 4 in the afternoon. jurors must now consider all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. and the jurors must be unanimous to convict. >> former president donald trump and the rest of the country must now wait for the 12 jurors to deliver a verdict in the hush money trial we already have to wait outside the courtroom yesterday. trump continue to accuse the judge of putting him into unfair situation. we had a fair chance, the jury will determine whether trump is guilty of 34 felony charges of falsifying business records involving hush money payments to adult film star stormy daniels before the 2016 presidential election. the jurors have to talk about who they believe who they disbelief, why they just believe why they believe

>> a 24 is the time nasa and cal fire are supporting new satellite technology. now to help the agency's detect wildfires. so they announced this week that their support for this nonprofit group called earth fire alliance and it uses a network of more than 50 satellites that will scan the globe every 20 minutes in search of wildfires, the satellites can spot signs of fires through clouds and smoke. even darkness. the group hopes to have the satellites working by the year 2026. but in the san mateo county sheriff's office. >> is moving into its new headquarters this week. they're going to fully open the doors to the community on

monday, the new state-of-the-art headquarters is at 3.30, bradford street in downtown redwood city. 10 years after a federal recall of deadly airbags. millions of americans still have not replace them. carfax data shows that more than 6.4 million vehicles in the u.s. still have the old takata airbags linked to 27 deaths and about 400 injuries. about 40% of those cars are at high risk states now with heat and humidity and that could cause the airbags to potentially explode and said shrapnel into the vehicle. the states with the most unfulfilled airbag recalls are here in california and texas and florida. >> well, walgreens now jumping on the price, cutting bandwagon, joining target walmart and amazon. now it's slashing prices on hundreds of items. walgreens says prices are dropping immediately on more than 1500 items online and in its stores. that

four's. gayle ong shows us what those tennis described as dangerous living conditions. >>si don't want to buy, you know, hundreds dollars of food for it to go to waste again, like in january. >> annabelle llanos is one of the dozens of tenants on 26th avenue in oakland's fruitvale neighborhood who are suing the landlord for mold. cockroaches holes in walls, weeks, electrical issues that a lot of the tenants have been dealing with this after an electrical fire back in january. jackie's in erie is the tenants lawyer. they left tenants to fend for themselves for weeks. they left them without utilities or even without real housing. the landlord is someone who doesn't live in oakland but bought this property in oakland hoping to >> make a profit off of. >> not making repairs. milano says electricity has been restored to most of the units, but 4 units have yet to be repaired and are being powered by a generator that sits outside her window and it makes her family feel sick from the fumes. know we've

been enduring for over 4 months now. i'm >> being on temporary light. we don't know when this building with power power off again. the lawsuit is seeking compensation for the thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses due to lack of electricity and heat, including food, medicine, clothing, blankets and hotel stays. tenants are also seeking assistance from the alliance of californians for community empowerment, a nonprofit tenants rights organization that works with renters across california, including in oakland, valerie bachelor is the executive director. there are multiple families with multiple children. >> and these kids have had to go through not having power, not hot water, not having a refrigerator where they can store not only their food medicine. >> and kron 4 reached out to the landlord of this building. we have not yet heard back, but we are told the land more plans to meet with the tenants about the situation on friday in the studio. gayle ong kron.

4 news. >> it's a 33 and in the south bay, investigators have arrested a man for assaulting another man at a light rail station. deputies found this is so yesterday afternoon it was on the platform of the vta station in san jose near children's discovery museum. in the fight went ho a barricaded himself inside. deputies negotiated and ended up arresting him and the victim took himself to the hospital. we're not sure of his condition. 33 is the time at the state capitol. a new bill wants to prevent school districts from forcing teachers to notify parents if their children identify as lgbtq+, it's cool. >> the legislation would also keep teachers from outing children to their parents unless the child gives permission. so far, at least 8 school districts in the state have implemented similar policies. some parents argue it could be harmful to students mental health if they're out into their parents without their consent. while others say keeps parents aware of what's going on with their kids.

>> it is a safety issue. these policies are harming our students. and i know that because they reach out to me and they tell me. >> and they tell me how unsafe they are. and in fact, it makes all lgbtqia kids unsafe triangulate. the parents. >> i'm from what's happening in the school with the teachers in the school counselors. how can a parent care for their child? >> the democratic majority approved the bill to get rid of its notification policies. however, the debate still rages on because it still has to go before the senate health committee will see what happens there. well, meanwhile, the san francisco sheriff's office now defending its use of medical agents during a training exercise that ended up spreading to a nearby elementary school. it happened last tuesday. we reported on it live here on the kron. 4 morning news. this is where 20 students and a teacher at port whole elementary school experience burning sensations in their eyes and their throats. it happened as multiple law enforcement agencies were conducting a training exercise at a nearby county jail in san bruno. now, the san francisco

sheriff's office says it was uc berkeley police who brought the chemicals to use in their training. but the san francisco chronicle says. chemical was decades old and san mateo county supervisor dave canepa says it should never happen again. >> were in 2024. there has to be protocols and processes in place that way. now whats is deeply deeply more alarm. is that now we find out that was a multi agency >> you know, police, various police departments and that we're looking at canisters that are from the 1960's that would be disposed. >> the sheriff's office said last week that they are pushed are pausing all chemical agent training classes until the review is done. it's 8.36, and a richmond man accuses police of assaulting him because he was simply trying to videotape their response to an incident. yeah. and now a lawsuit has

interfering with a police officer in training that this is either out of control officer or >> there's a pattern and practice that exist that is allowed within department. but gus's attorney john burris says that was just an excuse for police to attack his client and violate his civil rights because of the basic respect person has a right to have as a citizen should be free from police abuse and beyond and ought to be able decide the constitutional right with what out fear that they're going to be subjected to boeing type activities and essentially arrested and taken to jail for something that they didn't do that with the because they stood up for their right to exercise their rights. a news conference wednesday bursts announced he's filed a claim against the city of richmond for the actions of police. sergeant alexander canine officer nicholas redneck. this is the first step before filing a federal civil rights lawsuit to this is the kind of conduct that i very much offended by as fergus who was both a cowboy and a horse trainer. he thinks those 2 officers should no longer be on the job. i
