is a problem. 13 minutes on the bay bridge. our san mateo bridge just short of 20 minutes, golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls. 31 minute ride back to you. thank you. reyna 901. and the breaking news recovering is the aftermath of a big fire that damaged a local public market in cascade coal ports. michael thomas has been following the story for us all morning long joins us now live from the scene. michael. >> well, things have certainly calmed down here before, but you can still see there's some smoke coming out. some fire officials that are still here. alameda county fire is heading this investigation, essentially calling this building a total loss. and you can see the roof completely blown out from those flames along with those front windows. and just to give perspective, take a look. this is video that we have from around 3 o'clock this morning. according to fire officials. it happened at 2.20 or so here at lake chabot public market. and according to the fire department, they say there were no injuries, but the fire did send massive flames through the roof and destroyed everything inside. and that also included one store owners

poke bar. take a listen to the moment that she found out. as i. >> i don't know. i saw the text job. i don't know what to make it really happened. so i just like live come here. >> now there were about 3 dozen fire officials from both alameda county fire and some neighboring stations here on the scene fighting the blaze telling us the cause is still unknown, but it was a struggle to get things under control. and they add that there were a few things that could have played a role, including a gas line back out here live. you can investigators are now just showing up on the scene and fire officials still here on the scene trying to figure out just exactly what happened when it comes to nearby neighboring homes and residences. noneyof those were affected. however, there is nearby elementary school. those were put in shelter in place until these hot spots are put out completely. and there is still lots of smoke in the air. so as we get more

details from fire, officials on the cars will continue to keep you updated. but after speaking with neighbors here in the area, this is really just a sacred place for the castro valley area. that's very latest here in custer value. michael thomas was sent back to a loss been lost. a lot of people that was go to for them. all right. thank you, michael. >> time now is 903. and a developing story this morning as well. we've got 8 students up in nevada now. they were arrested after a large fight broke out on campus. and now parents are worried for the safety of their own kids. our middle schoolers kron four's will tran is live at sinaloa middle school with the details. will. >> the kids are inside the classroom as we speak. but when they arrived to school, maybe show you video, they were met by adults, vice principals, principals, they in even brought in extra people to keep a close eye on the situation, including conflict counselors. now they want to make sure that the kids are safe because of what happened on friday. it took a couple of days for that nevada

police department to ultimately look at the video and make arrests. 8 kids between 12 and 14 years old got into a fight on friday on campus. the charges include conspiracy as well as felony assault. that's how serious the situation was. now. the school district, according to many parents, they say that they have been told the school district many times that bullying is a problem on campus. the school district did stop a possible fight on thursday. so that was prevented. but on friday, sure enough there was a huge fight on campus involving all of those kids. i got a chance to talk to the school district as well as some parents. here's a very action about possible ongoing bullying at campus. is bullying a problem here at the school? >> i think billings a problem in every middle school in america. so no worse know

better than any other place. i can't gauge that. i don't know what what happened said every other school, but i know that bullying happens at all. the schools. and i know that at the administration here is addressing and doing the best they can from the that we had here the other it was very disappointing. and i don't think the parents were heard. >> there was a lot of anger. there was a lot of heat but i'd like to see what else is happening. i like to see some major changes happened to protect these, his bullying and ongoing problem at the school 100%. >> and do you think that they were aware of it and did not doing anything? >> from what i've seen and what i've heard from other parents and children. yes. >> now the school district denies that that they say they try their very best to make sure that the kids are safe. and if there's any information they would pounce on it, which is exactly what they did on thursday. but moving forward, they're making sure that there are plenty of adults on campus

to make sure that the kids who are on campus remain safe. i even ask them what about the 8 kids have they been released and are they back on campus at this particular time? and that spokeswoman says she does not know. >> okay. well, we'll thank you very much for that. >> 906, right now. and 20 years after a jury found him guilty of murdering his pregnant wife, scott peterson is trying once again to gain his freedom his lawyers want to 14 pieces of evidence tested for dna proffers. rob nesbitt tells us what the judge decided. >> scott peterson and his lawyers are asking for access to dna that they say will prove lacy was still alive. with pearson left their modesto home to go fishing. 22 years ago. >> on wednesday, the judge allowed access to dna testing of one item. it's been 22 years since the bodies of laci peterson and her unborn child. conner washed ashore in san francisco bay, her husband and the man convicted of her murder appeared in court via zoom wednesday. peterson's

lawyers, but the los angeles innocence project have filed motions for access to dna evidence they say will prove laci was alive on december 24th and vanished while peterson was away fishing in san francisco bay. prosecutors with the san mateo da's office have refused hand over dna evidence unless court ordered on wednesday. judge elizabeth hill ruled that a piece of duct tape down lacey's pants will be able to be tested but deny dna testing on 13 other items. peterson's lawyers also claim shoddy police work saying the modesto police department's original investigation allegedly suppressed and lost court documents. they also claim that eyewitnesses who saw laci walking in the neighborhood at times after her husband left modesto, were never interviewed by police. scott peterson is being held at mule creek state prison about an hour east of sacramento. the san mateo district attorneys office will now need to consult with the ags office to determine what lab will do. the dna testing reporting in redwood city. i'm rob nesbitt.

kron. 4 news. it's 908. and we have some developing news where an inmate who escaped from a southern california correctional facility was arrested in san jose. >> 38 year-old daniel lopez zavala escape from the san benito correctional facility in hollister on tuesday by jumping over a barbed wire fence and they say that his girlfriend helped him to escape. he was arrested last night at a hotel and san jose. the sheriff's office says that zavala associates with northern gang members and now he's charged with several felonies, including child abuse. >> in the east bay, one man is dead now and another in the hospital following a shooting in oakland. so citizen app video shows police on tuesday night right along foothill boulevard near the stanley exit just off 5.80, when officers arrived. they say they found a man who'd been shot. that person died at the hospital and then a second victim. a man showed up at the hospital as well with gunshot wounds. that person is expected to survive. motive for the shooting is still being investigated. meanwhile,

san mateo county apparently seeing increase in the number of people living on the streets according to their latest count, which was conducted back in january. more than 2100 people now are experiencing homelessness. that's an 18% increase over the numbers from last year. officials also say they saw an increase in people receiving shelter in emergency facilities. redwood city apparently has the most homeless people in the county followed by pacifica and then unincorporated land along the coast. as home prices keep climbing ability. state capitol aims to level the playing field for families. the state assembly passed a bill yesterday preventing some big corporations from buying up single-family homes and flipping them into rentals. it was authored by assembly member alex lee, who represents parts of alameda and contra costa county. the bill now heads to the state senate. >> it's 9.10, and a bakery well known for its moshi doughnuts and muffins is closing its san francisco location this weekend. 3rd culture bakery says that its

inner sunset location is going to close after business on sunday, june 2nd, the stores on irving street, they first opened in 2022, but they say they decided to sell because they say it's been a real challenge to find and retain employees. 3rd culture does have to other locations in the bay area. you can visit them in berkeley and walnut creek. and the popular asian grocery chain is coming to the east bay korean grocer. h mart is going to be opening in pleasanton. it will be the 4th location that they have around the bay. it's going to be the dublin retail center right next to the stone ridge shopping but we're not sure exactly the date for it. when it does open, though they'll have outdoor dining to complement their mega food hall. >> we're going to take a break at 9.11. still ahead on the kron 4 morning news, a cowboy in the east bay arrested after using his phone to record. a police arrest will tell you what happened and expect to see some improvements at many stations will explain what changes you might see in the near future and we are looking

about finding a new job as the markets? >> talk about katy perry quit. and 25 million dollar jobs. jobs for people making 55,000 lower. health care, jobs and hospitality hotel jobs, their inflate go there in style. everyone wants well, not everyone but because were vacationing. and we're getting older to the tune of 65 years old. we add roughly 10,065 year-old every day. so health care is doing great. whether you're a nurse or technician pmedical technician, whether you're taking people to and from the hospital lower earner jobs. not great. when we're talking about getting my life and then again, like i said, the hotel's of note. the middle and higher paying jobs, a little tougher to little bit longer to get now. so low paying jobs in style in demand post-pandemic higher paying jobs are. they're we have a healthy job market just not and cast. we're hot on high paid jobs and one topic and

that is credit card. so when we have a lower-paying job, put a lot on credit. >> and a lot of these fees really add up. 37% of americans pay late fee last 12 months keeping up with the bills, tougher with inflation of those late fees. 21% credit cards it can do your credit report that may hurt your job. your ability to get the job. it may hurt your ability to get a new car use cart may hurt ability to get an apartment. >> and those are big things. utilities, 10% of us had late payment there. you may not have electricity when you come home. if you don't pay or a utility bill, you're rents down 8%, were late fees had on rents. these are fees. we shouldn't be paid. but we are because inflation hurting us all they can be in your credit report. they can get your car repossessed. you can chalk up tell is my advice is talk to your creditors. be honest with them, ask for a one-time waiver to time waiver on late fees. doesn't hurt your credit report, but also on top of it, if you had a death in the family, she walks job, be honest, the creditors, because

sighting happened 4.30 yesterday morning on this home security camera, the area fair meadow way and police are still looking for this big cat. is it the same that was seen in at a mobile home park on dixon landing road. look at this one. still really big officials got out there with drones with thermal imaging trying to find one or 2 big cats. they weren't able to track it down. >> in the north sandra fell child turned himself in to the police after a shooting that happened last saturday. >> this was near b street in albert park lane. they are still looking for any other suspects, including the main shooter, the person who turned themselves and this was a juvenile and was taken to jail. >> 10 years after a federal recall of deadly airbags, millions of americans still haven't replace them. carfax data shows that more than 6.4 million cars in the u.s. still have an replaced takata

airbags. those the airbags linked to 27 deaths and 400 injuries. about 40% of those cars are at high risk. stare in high-risk states with heat and humidity, which can cause those airbags to potentially explode, sending shrapnel into the cabin. the states with the most on fulfilled airbag recalls right here in california. then you have texas and florida. a notorious hacker group claims to have hacked ticketmaster and stolen sensitive data of some 560 million users. the group. called this sells the data on the dark web for half a million dollars. the information allegedly contains names and addresses phone numbers, even partial credit card numbers. it's unclear how the hackers managed to breach ticketmaster, but the company has yet to comment. we're still following the story. all right. we're going take a break or 9.27. up next. tenants and open teaming up to go after their landlord for what they're calling dangerous living conditions.

museum. and after this, one of the men went homenended up barricaded himself inside. deputies were eventually able to negotiate with him and arrest him. the victim took himself to the hospital. no word on his condition. they're still trying to figure out why this attack happened. >> in redwood city woman has been arrested now after a car was set on fire. police say it broke out in the parking lot of second avenue right near highway 101. we've got the indicator there on the map. the witness show police video of a woman arng the fire. police believe they found that woman now booked her on charges of arson and resisting arrest. time now is 9.35. in some tenants in oakland are suing their landlord. there was a fire at their apartment building and they've been without power for a month. kron four's gayle ong shows us what they're dealing with. >> i don't want to buy, you know, hundreds dollars of food for it to go to waste again, like in january. >> annabelle llanos is one of

the dozens of tenants on 26th avenue in oakland's fruitvale neighborhood who are suing the landlord for mold. cockroaches holes in walls, weeks, electrical issues that a lot of the tenants have been dealing with this after an electrical fire back in january. jackie's in erie is the tenants lawyer. they left tenants to fend for themselves for weeks. they left them without utilities or even without real housing. the landlord is someone who doesn't live in oakland but bought this property in oakland hoping to >> make a profit off of. >> not making repairs. milano says electricity has been restored to most of the units, but 4 units have yet to be repaired and are being powered by a generator that sits outside her window and it makes her family feel sick from the fumes. know we've been enduring for over 4 months now. i'm >> being on temporary light. we don't know when this building with power power off again. the lawsuit is seeking compensation for the thousands

of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses due to lack of electricity and heat, including food, medicine, clothing, blankets and hotel stays. tenants are also seeking assistance from the alliance of californians for community empowerment, a nonprofit tenants rights organization that works with renters across california, including in oakland, valerie bachelor is the executive director. there are multiple families with multiple children. >> and these kids have had to go through not having power, not hot water, not having a refrigerator where they can store not only their food medicine. >> and kron 4 reached out to the landlord of this building. we have not yet heard back, but we are told the land more plans to meet with the tenants about the situation on friday in the studio. gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> thank you, gayle. 9.38. the time. the san francisco sheriff's office now defending its use of chemical agents during a training exercise that ended up spreading to a nearby elementary school was last tuesday. we reported here on the kron 4 morning news.

one, 20 students and a teacher out of the patrol elementary school experience burning sensations in their eyes and throats. and it happened as multiple law enforcement agencies were conducting a training exercise nearby at the county jail in san bruno, the san francisco sheriff's office says it was uc berkeley police who brought the chemical used in that exercise. san francisco chronicle reports that chemical was decades old. san mateo county supervisor dave canepa says that should never happen again. >> were in 2024. there has to be protocols and processes in place that way. now what deeply deeply more alarm is that now we find out that was a multi agency >> you know, police, various police departments and that we're looking at canisters that are from the 1960's that would be disposed. >> well, the sheriff's office said last week that they will pause all chemical agent

training until they complete a review of what happened. at the state capitol. a new bill wants to prevent school districts from forcing teachers to notify parents if their kids identify as lgbtq+, it's cool. the legislation would also keep teachers from outing children to their parents unless the child gives permission so far, at least 8 school districts in the state have implemented something similar. some parents argue it could be harmful to students mental health. if they're out of that, their parents without their consent. while others say it keeps parents aware of what's going on with their child. >> it is a safety issue. these policies are harming our because they reach out to me and they tell me and they tell me how unsafe they are. and in fact, it makes all lgbtqia kids unsafe triangulate. the parents. >> i'm from what's happening in the school with the teachers in the school counselors. how can a parent care for their child? >> the democratic majority approved the bill to get rid of its notification policies. however, the debate is still

going on because this bill still has to go before the senate health committee. >> it's 9.40 how much it costs to have child care. in california. san francisco's mayoral candidate mark farrell is trying to improve things. she's holding a news conference today talking about his plan to establish universal health care for children and san francisco. he says that the state reimbursement rates fail to cover the true cost of care. and that's putting a financial strain on families. he says that parents spend an average of about $40,000 a year between infant and preschool care. in the north bay, a popular nonprofit called conservation corps. north bay is preparing to help the community. they're going provide on-the-job training to underserved used who are looking for a career in conservation. they are hoping to prepare young adults for the workhorse of the workforce. the trainees are between the ages of 18 30 and there are typically low income

today a group rehabilitated brown pelicans. >> are going to be released into the wild near fort baker and sausalito. are they credible? look at these birds in the mid april, there are about 40 starving and injured pelicans. they were taken in by the international bird rescue. the rescue said that the birds are having trouble finding fish and they're being injured by fishing hooks and lines. most of them came in from monterey and santa cruz. the california apartment fish wildlife is investigating the cause of this crisis. the first group of pelicans going to be released today at 2.30. all i'm going to watch for that. those are amazing. >> ok, 9.45, is the time. let's get over to the weather center. we know john's been tracking the forecast here on this thursday and friday. the

and while maintaining about half of the state's reserves, lawmakers say the state's rainy day fund has helped, but they acknowledge this is a tough budget year. >> we know the revenues generally coming in lower than the forecast and that's concerning. and so we are prepared for some very difficult choices ahead. >> you know, the governor made a quote a number months ago. i think, you know, about budget is a reflection of your priorities, right? and so i really do hope the governor proves that out. you know, for all californians. >> the assembly and senate budget committees are set to review the proposed budget in the coming week and that lawmakers have until june 15th to pass a fully balanced budget and send it to the governor for his signature. new data from the u.s. census bureau shows california is one of 8 states seeing the population shrink in the last year. the overall decrease was just 0.2%. but some bigger cities saw more dramatic drop,
