right now on the kron. 4 morning news. a massive fire overnight damage is a popular market in castro valley. we're going to take you to the scene. multiple students arrested at a nevada middle school after a fight breaks out, sending some to the hospital. we've got the update there on campus and a warning to milpitas residents. look at that. 2 reports outlined sightings just miles apart from each other. >> from the local news station, you're watching you

you've been warm all morning with temperatures hardly falling out of the 70's last night. you're back up to 82 degrees already at 10:00am in vacaville berkeley, sitting at 61 sf at 67 right now. well, to pull in at 72 degrees later on today, we'll be looking at daytime highs warmer than yesterday's close to if not to the 90's for some of our inland areas. back to you. >> thanks a lot of us. get back to the breaking news that we've been covering, which is a massive fire that damaged local public market in castro valley. it was a huge scene problems. michael thomas is there with the update. michael. >> well, things have started to settle down here and you can see just how massive that fire was. they're still continuing to put out some hotspots here at the top of lake chabot public market. that roof is completely gone. and it started during the early morning hours. >> this massive fire in castro valley lake chabot public market broke out at around 2.30 this morning. according

to alameda county fire. there were no injuries. fire did said massive flames through the roof and destroyed everything inside and that included store owner suki lynn's pokey bar. take a listen to the moment she found out as i. >> i don't know. i saw the text shop. i don't know what's in the night is it really happened. so i just like live come here, about 3 dozen fire officials from both alameda county fire. neighboring stations were on the scene fighting the blaze for hours telling us the cause is still unknown and under investigation. >> but it was a struggle to get things under control, adding that there were a few things that may have played a role. >> i'm just making access to the back. there's a mezzanine up. top present a huge problem. just trying to make access now to get out. there was so much fire. there's already fire shooting through the roof. looks like may be said by a gas line at some point. so that a pretty >> nearby >> buildings and residences were not affected. but a

the very latest here in castro valley and michael thomas story. and james, we'll send it back to michael, thank you very much. 10. 0, 4, right now. and another developing story. 8 students in nevada were arrested for a large fight that broke out on campus. parents worried about the safety of their kids. now kron four's will tran is on the story. >> the kids are inside the classroom as we speak. but when they arrived to school, maybe show you video, they were met by adults, vice principals, principals, they in even brought in extra people to keep a close eye on the situation, including conflict counselors. now they want to make sure that the kids are safe because of what happened on friday. it took a couple of days for that nevada police department to ultimately look at the video and make arrests. 8 kids between 12 and 14 years old got into a fight on friday on campus. the charges include conspiracy as well as felony assault. that's how serious

the situation was. now. the school district, according to many parents, they say that they have been told the school district many times bullying is a problem on campus. the school district did stop a possible fight on thursday. so that was prevented. but on friday, sure enough there was a huge fight on campus involving all of those kids. i got a chance to talk to the school district as well as some parents. here's a very action about possible ongoing bullying at campus. is bullying a problem here at the school? i think billings a problem in every middle school in america. >> so no worse know better than any of the place. i can't gauge that. i don't know what what happened said every other school, but i know that bullying happens at all. the schools. and i know that at the administration here is addressing and doing the best they can from the that we had here the other it was very disappointing. and i don't

think the parents were heard. >> there was a lot of anger. there was a lot of heat but i'd like to see what else is happening. i like to see some major changes happened to protect these, bullying and ongoing problem at the school 100%. >> and do you think that they were aware of it and did not doing anything? >> from what i've seen and what i've heard from other parents and children. yes. >> now the school district denies that that they say they try their very best to make sure that the kids are safe. and if there's any information they would pounce on it, which is exactly what they did on thursday. but moving forward, they're making sure that there are plenty of adults on campus to make sure that the kids who are on campus remain safe. i even asked them what about the 8 kids? have they been released and are they back on campus at this particular time? and a spokeswoman says she does not know. >> thanks a lot. we'll 10, 0, 7, right now. and some people

in the bay area are being warned to specifically one neighborhood because they've been mountain lion sightings. couple of them actually 3. now they think crawford's reyna. harvey walks us through it all here in the studio right yep. so out of those 3 signs in the south bay to them actually been in the last 2 weeks in milpitas. and they were actually just miles apart from each other. take a look at this. this is the most recent sighting u.s. police say this video from 4.30, yesterday morning right near the area. fear metal way. police are still looking for this big cat and this one was actually spotted in a mobile home park. this is on dixon landing road. officials used drones thermal imaging to try and find that cat, but they couldn't track it down. settles day. this big cat was spotted prowling through a yard earlier this month. that's scary. that line was captured, leaping up on offense and taking a little look around before walking along the top trail. officials are asking residents in the area to consider bringing pets. if you outside indoors,

keeping them on a leash during walks. if you see a mountain lion running, it is not recommended for you to run away state trying to peer large wave your arms speak at a very loud and from voice. but i have any word yet any of these animals have been caught. we'll be following the story send it back to both of the deaths. all right. thanks a lot. reyna is 10, 0, 8.20 years after a jury found him guilty of murdering his pregnant wife. scott peterson is trying to gain his freedom again. yeah. his lawyers wanted 14 pieces of evidence tested for dna. >> kron four's rob nesbitt lets us know what the judge decided. scott peterson and his lawyers are asking for access to dna that they say will prove lacy was still alive. with pearson left their modesto home to go fishing. 22 years ago. >> on wednesday, the judge allowed access to dna testing of one item. it's been 22 years since the bodies of laci peterson and her unborn child. conner washed ashore in san francisco bay, her husband and the man convicted of her

murder appeared in court via zoom wednesday. peterson's lawyers, but the los angeles innocence project have filed motions for access to dna evidence they say will prove laci was alive on december 24th and vanish. while peterson was away fishing in san francisco bay, prosecutors with the san mateo da's office have refused to hand over dna evidence unless court ordered on wednesday. judge elizabeth hill ruled that a piece of duct tape down the lacey's pants will be able to be tested but denied dna testing on 13 other items. peterson's lawyers also claim shoddy police work saying the modesto police department's original investigation allegedly suppressed and lost court documents. they also claim that eyewitnesses who saw laci walking in the neighborhood at times after her husband left modesto, were never interviewed by police. scott peterson is being held at mule creek state prison about an hour east of sacramento. the san mateo district attorneys office will now need to consult with the ags office to determine what lab will do. the dna testing reporting in

redwood city. i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. >> well, san mateo county now seeing an increase in the number of people living in the streets, according to their latest count conducted in january. more than 2100 people were experiencing homelessness. that's about an 18% increase over last year's number. officials also say they saw an increase in people receiving shelter in emergency facilities. redwood city apparently has the most homeless people in the county followed by pacifica and then unincorporated land along the coast. as home prices keep climbing. there's a bill in the state capital that is looking to level the playing field for families. the state assembly passed a bill yesterday preventing some big corporations from buying up single-family homes and turning them into rentals. it was authored by assembly member alex lee, who represents parts of alameda and contra costa county. the bill now heads to the state senate. >> it's 10 11 and still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news homeowners in the east bay are concerned because some have lost their home insurance

insurance company or they're on the brink of that. many saying they are desperate for answers and solutions. that's basically why i came to see my worst fears were realized in they are. her brown is one of thousands of bay area homeowners experiencing the statewide insurance crisis. first hand. he's lived in orinda for 30 years and recently got told by his home insurance provider that he's being dropped. this fall have a plan right now. brown and more than 100 others packed into the library auditorium wednesday night for a town hall with the state department of insurance and the renda mayor. darlene, gee, you have been very, very hard hit. we were one of the hardest hit communities and but it, but it is very emotional. insurance providers say they are not renewing thousands of policies due to wildfire risk. state farm alone is set to cancel 30,000 insurance is statewide. nearly 2000 of them in orinda think it's really, really hard and it's it's terrible when you get dropped. the state

does offer a policy for homeowners who are unable to get insured in the marketplace. it's supposed to be a temporary safety net, but the commissioner's office says 1000 people are applying for it every day. the deputy commissioner explains the state's ongoing plan to stabilize the insurance market. the california sustainable insurance strategy includes requiring insurance companies to write no less 85% of homes and businesses in distressed areas that are identified by the insurance commissioner. the state hopes to complete several reforms by december of this year. but some say that's too late patients are dying on the side of the road. and there you're away from getting to the hospital. and we simply ask, keep moving as fast as possible because this is very real is very worrisome. even handed out this flyer here at the town hall for the second annual wildfire prevention and safety fair is this saturday. it's at the community park and it starts at 10 30. i'm sara

stinson reporting in orinda kron. 4 news. >> 10 21 is the time and nasa and cal fire are supporting some new satellite technology to help the agency's direct and detect wildfires. so they announced this week their support for this nonprofit group called earth fire alliance. and it uses a network of more than 50 satellites that from space can scan the globe every 20 minutes searching for wildfires. the satellites can spot signs of fires to clouds or smokes or darkness doesn't matter. the group is hoping to have the satellites up and working by 2026. >> that's why we're just talking about that will bakery because there's a really well-known bakery. they're well known for their moshi doughnuts and muffins, especially and they are closing their san francisco location this weekend. 3rd culture bakery announced that the inner sunset location is closing after sunday, june 2nd, that story's on irving street. they open to just in 2022, but they say the owners decide they have to sell it because they say it's too hard to find and retain employees.

>> 10 24 and ticketmaster has been hacked. a notorious hacker group stole sensitive data of ticketmaster users. the group is called fists and they say that they have the data and that they're selling it on the dark web for a half a million dollars. they say

the information is names, addresses, phone numbers and partial credit card numbers for about 560 million ticketmaster customers. they don't know. ticketmaster doesn't know all this breach app and the company has yet to comment. so we're waiting for a comment to cut master. i use them. so a lot of people consumers across the country, by the way, are getting savvier with their budgets at the grocery store. >> fact, report show more and more people are. going away from the big name brands and leaning more towards generic brands to save a few pennies here. and there grocery prices are up. 26 1% compared to where they were before the pandemic. and according to the research groups are dollar sales. a private brands went up only 6% in 2023 and now major retailers are taking note. they're cutting prices on thousands of items, walgreens and target. you probably heard in the news are each pledging to lower prices for thousands of items. amazonfresh is promising 30% savings. plus grocery stores

at a light rail station. the assault happened yesterday afternoon on the platform of the t station in san jose near a children's discovery museum. and the suspect the attacker went home and barricaded himself inside. the deputies were able to negotiate and he was arrested. the victim took himself to the hospital. we're not sure of his condition and we don't know what prompted this fight. authorities have identified a man was shot and killed in belmont last friday. was 27 year-old dion day gaytan from san francisco. he was shot near irwin and hiller streets just off of 101, several times. police found him there with the bullet wounds and they're now searching for the suspect. >> well, san francisco sheriff's office now defending its use of chemical agents during a training exercise that ended up spreading to a nearby elementary school. it happened last tuesday, 20 students and a teacher there for toll elementary we're experiencing burning sensations in their eyes and

throats and it turns out this was happening as multiple law enforcement agencies were conducting a training exercise not too far away over at the county jail in san bruno. the san francisco sheriff's office says the uc berkeley police department brought those chemicals to the training exercise. the chronicle later reported that that those chemicals are decades old. san mateo county supervisor david canepa says this should never happen again. >> were in 2024. there has to be protocols and processes in place that way. now what deeply deeply more alarm is that now we find out that was a multi agency >> you know, police, various police departments and that we're looking at canisters that are from the 1960's that would disposed. >> the sheriff's office said last week that they are pausing all chemical agent training classes until they complete a review of what happened.

>> time now is 10, 35 in the east bay. this is what it looks like in an apartment building on 26 avenue in oakland's fruitvale neighborhood. and on top of this, these conditions, the building's owner hasn't provided power. that building has a power for a month after a fire in january. and so the tenants are now suing their landlord. they say the landlord has not made any repairs or reimburse them for hotel stays food, medication that was lost because there's no power after that fire. one tenant says while electricity was restored to most of the units, there are still 4 units that are being powered by a generator that sits outside her window. and she says the fumes are making your family n% sick. >> we've been enduring for over 4 months now. i'm being on temporary light. we don't know when this building with power power off again.

care for children in san francisco. he says state reimbursement rates failed to cover the true cost of care and that creates a financial strain on families. he says that parents spend an average of $40,000 a year between infant and preschool care. a community college in pittsburgh is paving the way for higher education for high school students in east contra costa county lost on u.s.. college is offering a free dual enrollment program that allows high school seniors juniors to take college classes while they are in high school in in their high schools, the dean of students success says that about half of the east contra costa county high school graduates do not go on to college. those currently enrolled in this program are passing with a c or higher. it's free and its offered at 9 traditional and alternative high schools in the district that you see on your screen and soon they will be offering more than 50 different courses. >> well, the san mateo county
