kron. 4 morning news. a fatal crash on highway 1, 0, 1, shuts down lanes for a time on the peninsula this morning. plus, pride events start today across the bay area. the fbi is issuing a safety warning for those looking to celebrate. a scary moments for us and around high school after threats of explosives on campus forced a lockdown. one parent says it's just the new norm. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news >> good morning and thanks for waking up with us on a friday after arya and i'm james, we've got lots to talk about this hour. but first, we do want to start with a check of weather and traffic. yeah, it's a little hazy out there is making for a beautiful morning. yeah. got another hot one today to temperatures going to be well up into the upper 80's today. we are

seeing crystal clear skies other than the evidence of a little bit of haze. as tara and james mentioned, looking outside at the golden gate bridge, you can see a little bit of it hanging out there. but otherwise, the crystal clear skies overhead, something you won't miss as you're getting up this morning. skies stay clear at the coast this morning. but a push of fog into the afternoon. you'll see it here on your winds. bap winds kicking up by one to 02:00pm today. so if you want some time at the coast, the morning is the time to do so. these winds come along with some cooler air will rush to the bay cleaning out some of that haze. but also cooling us off. come to tomorrow. temperatures in the 50's 60's right now. right now, livermore at 65 degrees. berkeley at 56 santa rosa at 60. and as i mentioned, one last of her hotter days before a cool down the rest of the weekend rain. right, john, thank you for that. started off this morning with a fatal traffic collision along north. now on a one house and palau told now that just cleared about 15 to 20 minutes ago. so things are a little slow and sluggish because of that 50 woman,

event with the changing of the pride flag in honor of pride month. and the city of oakland will also hold a pride flag ceremony that's happening at 11, 30 with the mayor and city officials. this year's theme for san francisco pride is a beacon of love. it's filled with events basically daily leading up to the big parade at the end of june in federal law enforcement are warning everyone that both lgbt community and its that foreign terrorists or their u.s. based allies could be targeting lgbt venues and events throughout this month, which could lead to hate crimes or even violence. we did speak with the san francisco fbi officials about this. take a listen to what they had to say. >> i a very good grasp what's normal behavior for their surroundings. encourage them that they see something that's very suspicious, very out of the that they report that. >> now the fbi goes on to say that the volume and intensity of propaganda recently has

increased following the october 7th hamas attack in israel. and as for now, again, there is no specific threat for any city or san francisco itself, but rather everywhere and any pride event happening over the next month. so as we get more details from officials will continue to keep you updated. that's very latest here in the newsroom. i'm michael thomas story. and james, we'll send it back to thank you, michael. >> saito three-a time. let's get back to what the rain was talking about a moment ago. issue on one traffic thankfully now moving along on the northbound side in palo alto. after that deadly crash this morning. yeah, kron four's will tran. it has what led up to this crash. >> always of northbound 101 through paulo. also at san antonio avenue reopen to the public. but for 4 and a half hours, it was shut down because of a fatal accident involving 3 vehicles. you can see traffic, no problems, but i'm sure the backup is going to take quite some time to clear out this all actually

started at around 3 o'clock in the morning when according to the chp, they believe the driver of a red suv was simply drowsy behind the wheel, slams into a light pole right next to the freeway bounces off the light pole goes to the center lanes when he was rear ended at that point by the driver of a silver tsai on then the driver of the red suv gets out of his suv. well, months later, a tractor slams into his red suv plows into him with his suv where he's underneath pushes the suv all the way to the right wall on the freeway. >> injuries so severe that he died at the scene. drugs, alcohol, not factors, just simply being tired at 3 o'clock in the morning. as far as the traffic, the chp obviously had to do measurements clean up all of the debris and the chp allowed

caltrans to stay on the scene because they metering lights were damaged. they allowed caltrans to stay here to make repairs. >> unfortunately, this is their new norm. i think this this kind of behavior has happened. decades before this experience today. >> and then a parent is talking about the fact that it's a norm now for kids to be in lockdown. and that's what happened at cal high in san ramon. the kids are put on lockdown for several hours because there was a call that came in about explosives and a gunman on campus. this all started around 10 o'clock in the morning yesterday. police responded with a heavy forces. you can see they have bomb sniffing dogs out drones. students had to stay in their classrooms the whole time. >> we have to like block out the door us all the lights are turned off want all are not always the bathrooms, norm. now right? >> all the school shootings that have happened over the last couple yeah, that's what

we always have. these lockdown drills as well. that's also also was a long happened. and then that's when find those and other serious. >> it is sad that that the kids are so calm about it. and luckily, it's happy that nobody was hurt and that no explosives were found. the students were sent home and now police are investigating where those fake threats came from. >> 806, is the time we want to take you live right now to a press conference being held by former president donald trump addressing very public this one day after being convicted. they won on 34 felony in his hush money trial in new york city where prosecutors are convinced a jury that he had perpetrated that hush money payment to adult film star stormy daniels as a way of influencing the 2016 election kron. 4 is monitoring the press conference. the entire situation will bring you any relevant news as it comes out with this morning. it's 807, and another big story that we're following is what actually happened in court.

>> when trump became the first former u.s. president to be convicted of a felony crime found guilty. as i said, 34 counts of this hush money payment to influence 2016 election. basil, john is in new york city with more on that historic moment. >> history was made as donald trump was convicted by the new york jury for falsifying business records before the 2016 election. this was disgraceful for former president. donald trump was furious after he left the courtroom. >> and was found guilty in the hush money trial. we didn't do very innocent trump is now the first former u.s. president to be convicted of a crime and now faces a possible punishment o 4 years in prison. new york district attorney alvin bragg calls this a huge win. we should all be thankful for the careful attention. that this jury paid to evidence and the law jury

north bay, there was smoke that because suu seen for miles and fire and an egg farm. yeah. now luckily no chickens people were harmed in this, but it did cause quite the scene for miles around kron 4. sarah stinson has the story. >> smoke from the fire here at the pedal. luma egg farm could be seeing all the way down town which had some worried about the chickens and the farm workers. well, i just turned the corner and there was this shot. it looks like a monster. thankfully, no chickens were inside. everyone is okay. >> o that's good. that's really a large plume of smoke could be seen coming from a farm in the unincorporated part of petaluma. i just saw dark clouds like that. >> okay. there's no rain in the forecast. not sure about that. and then the next something came over my phone and then i knew a barn caught fire at petaluma egg farm on kavanaugh. a lane just after 2. >> the sonoma county sheriff's office used a helicopter to assist multiple fire agencies on the ground, putting out the

flames and making sure the fire didn't spread. but the wind made their job harder was pushing the smoke right now on top of the other bar. and so. >> creating an immediate exposure to catch those on fire as well as the grass and the homes across the across the way. and so when not in our favor and had we been about a month later than this, it would better tremendously different story. fire crews were able to contain the fire to the barn. a spokesperson for petaluma egg farm says. >> the barn was recently remodeled and wasn't being used. yes, that's a really so everybody's okay. and it was just the bar and the structure itself and the chickens. a veteran coal bit the last couple >> so yeah, they need a break. >> fire crews remain here at the farm to investigate the cause of the fire. the family that runs pedal in egg farm is working with investigators trying to figure out if this was arson or an accident. i'm petaluma kron. 4 news.

breeze. the rest of the weekend after today actually cools down pretty noticeably winds will move in increasing after 02:00pm today. you can see them right here sweeping right through the middle of the bay. this has the most dramatic temperature drop for inland areas tomorrow speech or cast. you can see right here just pushing right in. and that is going to show a little bit of fog into tomorrow morning. as for today, daytime highs, if you like the warmth still warm, in fact, very comparable to yesterday. we'll hit those 60's earlier in the day in the afternoon for the coast and then temps will fall after that 70's to 80's for the rest of the bay area. aside from 3 cities which are barely hanging on to the 90's. san jose, you're close to 90 88 while hayward oakland up to richmond all in the 70's concord, up to 89 or 90 degrees spots, pittsburg, antioch, in vacaville, each right above 90 degrees. tomorrow's temps down into the low 80's at the warmest monday will all be in the 70's 60's. the coast. temps after that will get even hotter. so do

research shows the diagnoses of ptsd more than doubled between 2017 to 2022. as the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe. the health of a healthy mind study found that more young people are struggling in the aftermath of traumatic events. doctors say the spike in ptsd is attributed to societal stressors like campus shootings and ongoing social unrest in the sudden loss of loved ones due to the coronavirus. and there you see in purple, former house speaker nancy pelosi joined by mayor london breed another san francisco city officials breaking ground on the new is building for the nonprofit called united play is yesterday. the organization was founded by formerly incarcerated people who grew up in the soma neighborhood who now want to come back to their roots worth this. a new headquarters located in that same community and pelosi who helped secure 4 million dollars in federal funding for

going to cost more. so coming at a bad time for a lot of pet owners. coming at a good time for killed 3 shelters is california's first ever adopt a pet day? and that's because the shelters are jammed and they would love you to take part and adopt an animal. there are 170 animal adoption sites across the state taking part in this. they're about 2000 pets that need homes. and part of this is also to bring awareness about the overcrowded conditions in california's shelters. times will vary for the various shelters that are taking part in san francisco. the animal shelter will take part from 11:00am to 06:00pm tomorrow. that's their location on florida street. >> in the south bay, san jose residents can sign up to adopt a block. it's a new volunteer program that mayor matt mahan launched hoping to help kids. i hope help keep streets clean. no pilot program will require volunteers to clean up litter in their neighborhoods. the city will provide participants with litter kits, safety vests and gloves. residents can sign up for it at the mayor's office. we're

potentially clearing the way for it to remain operational. if tiktok was sold to a u.s. buyer. the irs is going expand direct file its free tax filing program nationwide starting in 2025, worn 140,000 users successfully filed their returns using direct file in 2024 and the pilots saved about 5.6 million dollars in tax prep fees. the pilot focus on simple filings. the irs will share more details about this program later this year. >> tesla now issuing a fix for more than 125,000 vehicles due to a malfunction in its seat belt warning system, the national highway traffic safety administration says the seat belt warning light and audible chime might not activate when the driver is unbelted. this affects certain makes of all tesla models except the cybertruck. tesla says it's going to release an over the air software update in the coming weeks to fix the issue. well, relief this

checking out the weather for you on a friday going into the weekend. we are. we've got john shrable standing by with a look at that. good morning you, guys. yeah, it's a beautiful weekend. forecast ahead of us. a little break from the warmth. >> if yesterday was a little too warm for a a tomorrow sunday and even monday are going to be nice and comfortable looking outside from mount tam. we've got a little bit of haze trapped right at the surface. high pressure ridge in place. for now, you've noticed a little bit of that haze right at the surface. that's not going to be as much of a thing for the rest of the weekend. low pressure just to our north is going help to sweep things up a little bit. it's also going help to cool things down with that does come a return of fog towards the evening tonight. so watch for that cool coastal breeze really picking up after 02:00pm temperatures in the 50's to 60's right now, mild start to the morning crystal

making on thursday, the east bay municipal utility district launching its orinda photovoltaic, solar energy project with its partner to tell energy is renewable very excited that a project like this is possible in our service area. more than 12,000 solar panels, the size of dining tables have been installed on 12 acres of land in orinda. all of them tracking to the sunlight. each panel generates kilowatt hours that will feed back into the grid. so tell energy's vice president eric but says east bay mud can buy those hours at a discounted rate. because clean energy is affordable every year, there 10% of their total energy costs being offset by this project. we cannot be successful in our mission. >> without protecting the environment to partnership between east bay mud into tell energies is slated for a 25 year contract the 10% savings in energy costs are projected to save the utility.

26 million dollars during that span. right pairs will not that would be associated with continuing the way we we are weeks away from really powering this up and getting energy flowing. and so, you know, just in time for the nice weather here and that the long days in the sunshine this project brings the utility another step closer to reaching its goal of being carbon neutral by 2030, in orinda. philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> a new bill aimed at increasing access to opioid addiction. treatment is a step closer to becoming a reality. the bill authored by san francisco assemblymember matt haney would expand methadone access in the state. methadone is a medication to treat opioid the legislation would allow doctors to give patients up to 3 days worth of methadone to take home with them rather than getting it at an approved clinic. this would also increase the amount of the medication a patient can take home and removed some of the requirements needed for

accessing this treatment. the bill passed unanimously out of the state's health committee. now it heads to the state senate. >> 3 san mateo county deputies are recovering this morning after they were hurt while arresting would be car thieves. it happened wednesday night in the parking lot. outside of a cvs on san carlos avenue. deputies say a woman who lost her keys earlier that day and apparently a group that found them came back to trying to steal the car from the parking lot. deputies attempted to detain them but were assaulted. now that called for backup. those 2 men that they were arresting. we're from morgan hill. they're in custody now facing several charges. as for the injured deputies, they were taken to a local hospital and they're all expected to be okay. well, the search is underway right now in palo alto for burglars who broke into 2 homes while the residents were inside. so the first break-in happened tuesday morning. it was on cecil avenue. police say a woman in her 60's noticed her door had been pried open from the outside. she believes the burglar heard her and ran off because nothing apparently was

taken from the home in the second break-in. this happened wednesday morning on palo alto avenue and the woman who lives there told police she heard the front door open and then close when she went around to investigate. she saw that her phone and her wallet were gone. the victim went outside and apparently found items on the sidewalk a few feet away from the house. police say the 2 break-ins at this point don't appear to be connected. >> it's a 34 and for your money, the state insurance commissioner is working on bringing back insurance companies to california. the governor is also weighing in with a proposal, although it's not seeing unanimous support from lawmakers. kron four's dan kerman has the story. with homeowners across the bay area and the state being dropped by insurance companies, mostly due to fire risk. >> the governor has proposed speeding up the review of insurance company rate hike requests to just 60 days. the time. >> is important. in terms of the rate decision making. and that's what we're promoting as short-term step and continue to promote the larger package

in partnership with the insurance commissioner. this is an important element. >> of what needs to be a multi pronged fix so we can get back to doing business in california. >> rex frazier's with the personal insurance federation of california, which represents large auto and home insurance companies in california. oftentimes it takes months and months before an insurance company even knows where it stands with the state. under this proposal, the state at 60 days and every 30 days thereafter they would have to declare where they stand on a rate filing that accountability. that's good for everyone. the governor has proposed a plan that is not going to get homeowners access to more coverage and affordable price. but carmen bill burr with the group consumer watchdog thinks the proposal gives away too much. what the governor has proposed will tie the hands of the insurance commissioner and reviewing rate hikes and cut public participants out of the process. and that is guaranteed to lead to higher

unjustified rates for california homeowners. now it'll be up to state legislators to decide whether to include the governor's insurance proposal as it stands or change it when approving this year's budget. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> governor newsom's urging state lawmakers to be careful. he doesn't want to over regulate artificial intelligence. the governor gave remarks at a generative ai. some of that was going on in francisco. they're also tech leaders and leaders from higher education. there. more lawmakers are working out of place. safeguards on this emerging technology because they're concerned about its potential hazards. governor newsom, those he at the same time does not want to stifle eyes growth in california. you want to make sure that the state remains a tech leader. >> i mean, this is this is california. 35 to 50 top market cap and companies are just right here in our own backyard. so if we over regulate, if we overindulge, we chase assignee object, you know, we put ourselves in

perilous position. >> just last week, the state senate approved new ai regulations. and that bill would regulate how state agencies can use ai. it's heading into the assembly next. also at the capitol, hundreds of crime victims gather demanding governor newsom approved money for survivor resources and programs. democratic leaders have reached a budget deal and some are not on board, though. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace has more. >> more than 200 crime victim advocates demonstrating outside the state capitol. your concern, governor gavin newsom's proposed budget will not invest in programs that they believe are crucial to help survivors of crime. everything from mental health services to legal assistance. how? >> the governor for him to do his job and for him to approve the project. >> that >> they say as a stance today,

released? >> the first group of rehabilitated brown pelicans are back in the wild after spending weeks being treated for starvation. >> soaring over the san francisco bay. brown pelicans were released at fort baker in sausalito thursday afternoon. they are fat and healthy and ready to go back out to the wild. all 8 of them were monks over 320 brown pelicans found suffering from starvation and injured by fishing hooks. the birds were found in mid-april. most of them came from the monterey and santa cruz areas. jd bergeron is the ceo of international bird rescue base in fairfield where the birds were treated. some of these birds have been in care as little as a couple of probably were found and brought in still doing quite well. >> others were more like 30, 40, 50 days, even so those are birds that probably had a bigger challenge to overcome. the free birds can be tracked
