>> today on kron, 4 news at noon as cease-fire calls continue at campuses nationwide. cops in riot gear entered encampment at uc santa cruz. we go there live. plus, a fire breaks out at a farm in petaluma sending massive plumes of smoke into the air.

the latest from oire officials on the situation. and donald trump. now the first former president to be convicted of a felony crime. his response to the verdict. >> from the bay station, you're watching kron. noon. >> thanks so much for joining us here on kron. 4 news at noon. i'm stephanie lin. we start with police responding in riot gear to uc santa cruz earlier this morning arresting pro-palestinian protesters blocking the main entrance to campus that encampment in place since the start of the month. school officials say kron four's charles clifford shows us the latest happening there. charles. >> well, good access to the uc santa cruz campus remains closed down. you see police the roadway approaching campus closed here. this has been going on since early this morning when law enforcement moved in to remove a protester encampment.

>> early friday morning, law enforcement in riot gear including officers from the california highway patrol. the san francisco police department began clearing encampments from the uc santa cruz campus. protesters upset about the conflict in gaza between hamas and israel have been here on campus for weeks. the university says they've been asking protesters to leave and stop blocking access to the school to no avail. in a statement on friday, they defended their decision to move in saying it is imperative that we restore full access to our campus and and other on lawful, unsafe actions as demonstrators continued to disrupt campus operations and threaten safety, even delaying access of emergency vehicles. it was impossible to do so without law enforcement intervention. the school also says that multiple arrests have been made. but as of midday friday, it's unknown exactly how many people have been taken into custody around 100 protesters remained on scene after being pushed back by police. they say the school has gone too far. so what's the mood

amongst everybody right the mood is really, really we're we're quite frankly, were furious. >> people are out there. they're yelling and the screaming because this is enormous violation of her constitutional rights and a overboard reaction in terms the level of brutality that we're witnessing by late morning. most of the encampments have been removed. it's unclear how long law enforcement will remain on scene. protesters told kron 4 that they are going to stay. all right. back live now with campus closed down today. all classes were held remotely. >> but for now in santa cruz, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> charles, thank you for your coverage. happening today, protesters plan to rally in front of the san francisco federal building in solidarity with the people of rafah. it starts at 5 this evening. and this is video of a previous protest at the same location back in february. tonight's demonstration comes following an israeli air strike that killed at least 45 people in a tent camp late sunday night.

the group organizing the event is demanding the u.s. imposed an arms embargo with israel. all lanes are now open on northbound highway. 17 south of santa cruz avenue in los gatos. this after being delayed on due to a bus crash involving at least 4 other cars in los gatos, california highway patrol says a number of people were injured. the collisions happened just after 7.15, this morning near the cats exit video showing some of the damage there. you can see one car's hood completely smashed in the extent of the injuries remains unclear. chp says the crash forced a miles long back up. meanwhile, traffic is back open on northbound highway 101 in palo alto after a fatal crash kron four's will tran has the details. >> always of northbound 101 through paulo. also at san antonio avenue reopen to the public. but for 4 and a half hours, it was shut down because of a fatal accident

involving 3 vehicles. you can see traffic, no problems, but i'm sure the backup is going to take quite some time to clear out this all actually started at around 3 o'clock in the morning when according to the chp, they believe the driver of a red suv was simply drowsy behind the wheel, slams into a light pole right next to the freeway bounces off the light pole goes to the center lanes when he was rear ended at that point by the driver of a silver tsai on then the driver of the red suv gets out of his suv. well, months later. a tractor slams into his red suv plows into him with his suv where he's underneath pushes the suv all the way to the right wall on the freeway. >> injuries so severe that he died at the scene. drugs, alcohol, not factors, just

simply being tired at 3 o'clock in the morning. as far as the traffic, the chp obviously had to do measurements clean up all of the debris and the chp allowed caltrans to stay on the scene because they metering lights were damaged. they allowed caltrans to stay here to make repairs. >> a former bay area college professor is sentenced to more than 5 years in federal prison for starting one of the largest and most destructive fires in california history. gary maynard pleaded guilty 3 counts of arson in february. prosecutors say maynard said a series of fires in the shasta-trinity national forest in 2021. while crews battled the dixie fire menard caught or rather talk criminology at sonoma state and santa clara university's. in the north bay, a petaluma egg farm barn is damaged after a fire. no chickens are people were harmed but smoke could be spotted from miles away. kron 4 sarah stinson reports.

>> smoke from the fire here at the pedal loom egg farm could be seeing all the way down town, which had some worried about the chickens and the farm workers. well, i just turned the corner and there was this shot. it looks like a monster. thankfully, no chickens were inside. everyone is okay. >> that's good. that's really a large plume of smoke could be seen coming from a farm in the unincorporated part of petaluma. i just saw dark clouds like that. >> okay. there's no rain in the forecast. not sure about that. and then the next something came over my phone and then i knew a barn caught fire at petaluma egg farm on kavanaugh, a lane just after 2. the sonoma county sheriff's office used a helicopter to assist multiple fire agencies on the ground, putting out the flames and making sure the fire didn't spread. but the wind made their job harder was pushing the smoke right now on top of the other bar. and so. >> creating an immediate exposure to catch those on fire as well as the grass and

the homes across the across the way. and so when not in our favor and had we been about a month later than this, it would better tremendously different story. fire crews were able to contain the fire to the barn. a spokesperson for petaluma egg farm says. >> the barn was recently remodeled and wasn't being used. yes, that's a really so everybody's okay. and it was just the bar and the structure itself and the chickens. a veteran coal bit the last couple >> so yeah, they need a break. >> fire crews remain here at the farm to investigate the cause of the fire. the family that runs pedal in egg farm is working with investigators trying to figure out if this was arson or an accident. i'm sara stinson reporting in petaluma kron. 4 news. >> all right. let's talk about our forecast now is we take a look at san francisco looking like there's something perhaps hazy out there. cuyler what you think just the ever so slight presence of a little marine layer that that is

today, but it will not stop us from warming up. these are the highs yesterday. so made it up to 91 in concord. 96 in pittsburgh, 90 degrees in livermore. you can see 89 in santa rosa in the upper 80's. also down in part to san jose, 70 degrees in san francisco. so yesterday was a warm wet. we're going to see that again today. sunshine out of half moon bay. always my indication. >> that we're going to see some warming up today because we don't have a whole lot of marine layer presents. now that is set to change as we get into the weekend. but for today, you can see we're already off to the races here. antioch in livermore already at 87 degrees at this hour, a downtown san francisco. 65. and you can see sunday 70's low 80's around as well. so today we're going to see temperatures potentially even warmer than yesterday. you can see this is the difference in temperatures as livermore's running about 6 degrees warmer than we were this time yesterday. so that's a set a beginning of an indication of where we're going today. obviously stormtracker 4 showing that we've got some nice blue skies out there. but as we zoom out, your i goes to

the northwest and you see what we you know, look out for a different time of year, which is a pretty classic low pressure system. now, this will stay to the north of us for the most part, but it will come towards us a little bit as we head towards the weekend that will drop the temperatures down. so today these are the highs and looking out for again, we could see some of those low 90's in our extreme inland spots and some 70's around the bay. i will be back in a little bit. we'll talk about the all important weekend forecast. very important. of course. thanks, donald trump is now the first former u.s. president to be convicted of a felony crime. he was found guilty on all 34 charges. >> of paying hush money to influence the 2016 election. he addressed his plans at trump tower earlier today. basil, john is in new york city with more. >> history was made as donald trump was convicted by the new york jury for falsifying business records before the 2016 election. >> this can't be allowed to happen to other presidents. it should never be allowed to

happen. >> former president donald trump says the fight isn't over after he was found guilty in the hush money trial. the we're going to be appealing this. scam. trump is now the first former u.s. president to be convicted of a crime and now faces a possible punishment o 4 years in prison. new york district attorney alvin bragg calls this a huge win. we should all be thankful for the careful attention. >> that this jury paid to evidence and the law jury deliberations took place over 2 days as the verdict came down. >> near the end of the second day. >> the only voice that matters is the voice of the jury. some of the president's most loyal supporters like colorado, republican congresswoman lauren boebert call this a political prosecution. this is malpractice of our judicial system. >> but victoria nurse with georgetown law school says the jury did its job. how it was supposed to they actually do

>> kron 4 is your local elections headquarters. san francisco mayoral candidate mark farrell says he has a plan to ease the cost of childcare in the city. >> the former interim mayor also accusing mayor london breed of not doing enough to fix the problem. kron four's lezla gooden reports. >> on thursday, mark farrell and now to plans to create universal health care for children in san francisco, adding that the city has been slow and making progress in the childcare department problem is not a lack of funds. >> it's since simply a lack of leadership and accountability. voters approved the tax in 2018 dedicated for this. you specifically. but nearly 400 million dollars sitting unspent in city hall today. he's referring to proposition

c. >> that pass and is aimed at giving early child care and education services for children up to 5 years old for low income families. but due to legal challenges that tax revenue cannot be spent until april of 2021. farrell says he has a plan to help struggling families faster. >> we will offer subsidies to help low and middle income parents and guardians of 4 local child care services, ensuring accessibility across all income levels here in our city for child care. will raise wages for childcare workers to address the shortage of qualified professionals. >> he says parents spend an average of nearly $40,000 between infant and preschool, karen mount. and if he's elected as mayor, he promises to change that state reimbursements failed to cover the true costs of this care. exacerbating the financial strains on families here in san francisco. >> that are still trying in many cases to recover from the covid-19 pandemic. and these

more show and a lot less tell from the people who spent the better part of a decade and city hall and failed to act affordability, childcare, public safety and homelessness will all remain in a state of crisis. if we keep turning to the people who got us into this mess. again, that statement coming from farrell's challenger in this race, daniel lurie. for service between the 24 stream mission and daly city stations is suspended this weekend. the move allows crews to make track improvements in clear nearby vegetation, free bus rides will be available between the stations. travelers are advised to expect delays of 30 minutes. starting mid-june. a water main replacement project in san anselmo shuts down several roadways. water says the mile long project will run run along. sarah frances trick boulevard from san francisco boulevard to butterfie rd. that project is expected to wrap up in november and replaced 4500 feet of aging cast iron pipe. all right. let's check in on our weather conditions as we take a live

look outside at the golden gate bridge. lovely blue skies out there. we could see the breeze flipping through right hand side of the screen. there i was. i was driving in today. just really admiring the scenery beautiful. i know it is. when you are in san francisco, the weather is nice. it's like it's just it's a postcard everywhere you look. and it's like that. we take a look downtown right now. >> looking at pyramid, beautiful writes, absolutely beautiful. you can see the wind is not too bad out there today. we'll see a little breezy conditions as we get into the afternoon. but one more wildly warm day with the sunny skies. cooling it down this weekend. we will see that marine layer roll back in and then next week we've got a major warming trend coming our way. so a lot going on. let's start with earlier today, which is pretty warm. 83 in san jose right now. 87 in livermore. we're already 65 in downtown san francisco and heading up to the north bay. we've got some low 80's from santa rosa, right on down to nevado fairfield at 89 degrees already at this hour's. obviously, it's going to be a warm one. i mentioned the wind wasn't too bad word about 13 miles per hour. we are going

to see breezy conditions as we get through the weekend. that has everything to do with a low pressure system to the north and west of us. high pressure still out here, but that low pressure is going to start to track through. and while it won't bring us rain, it will knock temperatures down. bring back that marine layer and the potential for a little coastal drizzle. none of that happening right now. as we take a look. it's stormtracker 4, but let's go through future cast here to take you through tonight. really nice night out there. but you can see where that low pressure system starting to sense. some of those clouds our way they will start to show up on saturday, particularly in the evening. that's what i think we could start to see a little coastal drizzle that continues throughout our sunday. so this is sunday afternoon, obviously sunday, the cloudier day of the 2 this weekend. if you're making plans, even as we head into monday, this is monday morning that coastal drizzle and that cloud cover is still going to be with us now. temperature taking livermore's example here with the average is 78 degrees warm today. cooling it down for the weekend into monday and then check out what happens as we get into tuesday wednesday,

thursday, we've got a snap of heat coming our way. this could likely be the warmest temperatures that we've seen so far. this season. so now is the time to think about what you need to do to stay cool if you are in lot of folks don't have air conditioning. so if you need to get to a cool place, think through your plans for tuesday, wednesday and thursday. and of course, we'll talk all about this as we work our way towards the heat next week. back to you. ice there. thank you. in the north bay, a group of seabirds is back in the wild weeks after they were found suffering from starvation. >> the birds were rescued by the international bird rescue and kron four's gayle ong was there for the big release. >> the first group of rehabilitated brown pelicans are back in the wild after spending weeks being treated for starvation. >> soaring over the san francisco bay. brown pelicans were released at fort baker in sausalito thursday afternoon. >> they are fat and healthy

and ready to go back out to the wild. all 8 of them were monks over 320 brown pelicans found suffering from starvation and injured by fishing hooks. >> the birds were found in mid-april. most of them came from the monterey and santa cruz areas. jd bergeron is the ceo of international bird rescue base in fairfield where the birds were treated. some of these birds have been in care as little as a couple of probably were found and brought in still doing quite well. >> others were more like 30, 40, 50 days, even so those are birds that probably had a bigger challenge to overcome. the free birds can be tracked on the international bird rescue is website. >> in the meantime, bergeron and his team are trying to figure out the cause of this crisis. i think there's clearly some access to food problem, whether that's caused by climate change. water weather. there's all been a whole lot of different theories. i think there's probably a combination of things. >> and the state fish and wildlife department is also investigating the cause of what has been making these

>> the state insurance commissioners working on bringing insurance companies back to the state. the governor is also weighing in with a proposal, but it's not seeing unanimous support from

lawmakers. kron four's dan kerman explains. >> but homeowners across the bay area and the state dropped by insurance companies mostly due to fire risk. the governor has proposed speeding up the review of insurance company rate hike requests to just 60 days. the time. >> is important. in terms of the rate decision making. and that's what we're promoting as short-term step and continue to promote the larger package in partnership with the insurance commissioner. this is an important element. >> of what needs to be a multi pronged fix so we can get back to doing business in california. >> rex frazier's with the personal insurance federation of california, which represents large auto and home insurance companies in california. oftentimes it takes months and months before an insurance company even knows where it stands with the state. under this proposal, the state at 60 days and every 30 days thereafter they would have to declare where they stand on a rate filing that accountability. that's good for everyone. the governor has

proposed a plan that is not going to get homeowners access more coverage and affordable price. but carmen bill burr with the group consumer watchdog thinks the proposal gives away too much. what the governor has proposed will tie the hands of the insurance commissioner and reviewing rate hikes and cut public participants out of the process. and that is guaranteed to lead to higher unjustified rates for california homeowners. now it'll be up to state legislators to decide whether to include the governor's insurance proposal as it stands or change it when approving this year's budget. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> governor gavin newsom is urging state lawmakers to be careful about over regulating artificial intelligence. the governor giving remarks at wednesday's generative ai summit in san francisco alongside leaders in technology and higher education. this comes as more lawmakers are working to place safeguards on the emerging technology to curb its potential hazards. newsom says

he doesn't want to eyes growth in california and wants to ensure state remains a tech leader. >> i mean, this is this is a 35 to 50 top market cap and companies are just right here in our own backyard. so if we over regulate, if we overindulge, we chase assignee object, you know, we put ourselves in perilous position. >> just last week the state senate approved new artificial intelligence regulations from napa senator bill dodd. that bill regulates how state agencies can use ai it. now heads to the assembly. at the state capitol. hundreds of crime victims gather to demand. the governor approved money for survivor resources and programs. well, democratic leaders reached a budget some aren't quite on board. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace explains. >> more than 200 crime victim advocates demonstrating outside the state capitol.

they're concerned governor gavin newsom's proposed budget will not invest in programs that they believe are crucial to help survivors of crime. everything from mental health services to legal assistance. how? >> the governor for him to do his job and for him to approve the budget. >> that >> they say as a stance today, the governor's budget proposal lacks the funding needed to adequately help victims. it comes as the governor has said he may have no other choice but to either cut or limit funding for some programs that the state faces a projected multibillion-dollar deficit. we are here to demand that california step up to meet its rocks, responsibility to survivors while they are concerned with the governor's budget proposal, they applauded legislative democratic leaders for coming out with their own budget proposal. assembly speaker robert remus and senate president pro tempore mike mcguire announced the proposal wednesday claiming it will not cut core services include it in their plan. 103 million

dollar investment for crime victims support programs. means our advocacy is working yet. >> just after this. good morning, everybody. the assembly budget committee met to review the legislature's budget proposal, a proposal that calls for 2 billion more dollars in education and homelessness pending the governor's proposal. in addition of that democratic leaders about their proposal will slash the governor's proposed cuts to state funding social services, including in-home care for eligible undocumented californians and cash aid for low income californians in the cow works program. we have ensured. >> at the budget is not balance most vulnerable populations but to balance the budget. democrats who came up rith the plan are proposing 1 billion dollars in additional climate cuts and 1 billion dollars in additional prison cuts. the plan also calls for the state to accelerate a pause of some tax credits for large businesses. these are difficult choices. we have to set priorities and created in actions because that is what this moment requires. but republicans say they're

frustrated. the plan was negotiated only among democrats. seems right now that the budget is very focused on a political narrative on the political ideology. and sometimes california is just want to the government to solvent. >> and the programs that they actually care about that actually affect their kids affect their daily lives. that's what we need to focus on that. >> and of course, this is not a done deal. the senate budget committee still needs to take it up. and of course, the governor will ultimately have the final say. the newsom administration confirms he is reviewing the proposal reporting at the state capitol. a tonn wallace kron. 4 news. >> a new solar project in orinda will help east bay mud cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. and as kron four's philippe djegal reports this could help customers save some money. >> more than 8 years in the making on thursday, the east bay municipal utility district launching its orinda photovoltaic, solar energy project with its partner to tell energy is renewable very excited that a project like this is possible in our

service area. more than 12,000 solar panels, the size of dining tables have been installed on 12 acres of land in orinda. all of them tracking to the sunlight. each panel generates kilowatt hours that will feed back into the grid. so tell energy's vice president eric but says east bay mud can buy those hours at a discounted rate. because clean energy is affordable every year, there 10% of their total energy costs being offset by this project. we cannot be successful in our mission. >> without protecting the environment to partnership between east bay mud into tell energies is slated for a 25 year contract term. the 10% savings in energy costs are projected to save the utility. 26 million dollars during that span. right pairs will not that would be associated with continuing the way we we are weeks away from really powering this up and getting energy flowing. and so, you

know, just in time for the nice weather here and that the long days in the sunshine this project brings the utility another step closer to reaching its goal of being carbon neutral by 2030, in orinda. philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> all right. let's talk about our forecast as we take a live look outside again at the golden gate bridge that so beautiful out there with those with that clear blue sky, kyla. yes, absolutely. and we've got some nice blue skies out at the coast as well. i thought i'd start right off the top here with your weekend weather know that's what everybody wants to talk about. so today, another warm day. we're going to see some inland upper 80's, even potentially that ninety-degree mark for some. and then as we work our way through the weekend, a big difference in temperatures are going to see these temps drop. >> and the reason for that is because we have a low pressure system to our north and west. let's talk about where we are right now. and then we'll take a look at that low pressure system. so already sitting at 89 degrees in antioch right now. 87 in livermore, you can see we're in the low 80's in san jose and up in santa rosa.

we've got some 60's and 70's around the bay itself. still a little cool out of half moon bay, but still not bad. 58 degrees. so as we go into our afternoon and evening, we are going to see a little bit of marine layer start to build back in tonight. so that's about 7 o'clock. and you see that starting to move into places like half moon bay as we wake up tomorrow, we will see more pervasive fog that we've seen the last few days. now, the difference is because we're going to see that marine layer rebuilding because our system is changing. our high pressure is going to relent a little bit. but tonight we'll still have mostly clear skies just that patchy coastal fog. and then i think in the overnight we'll start to see a little bit more of it develop right now. those storm tracker 4 showing that we're nice and clear. but here is why we're going to see a change. here's the low pressure system. it's going to start tracking across when it does that it brings rain to the pacific northwest, not to us, but it will knock those temperatures down. i'll be back in a bit. we'll talk about the fact that on the other side of that, we've got a run of heat next week. i'll have your 7 day forecast. coming up. all right. looking forward to it. thank you.
