pride celebrations kick off around the bay area. how one east bay city is planning on keeping a drag story time event safe. >> station. 2. >> thanks so much for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 2. i'm stephanie lin. pro-palestinian protesters have been cleared out from the uc santa cruz campus after police in riot gear responded to campus earlier this morning. kron four's charles clifford brings us the latest. >> well, here in santa cruz on friday afternoon, the uc santa cruz campus remains blocked off. you can see they've got the road shut down right behind me here as law enforcement continues to remove an encampment from the campus. early friday morning. law enforcement in riot gear including officers from the california highway patrol. the san francisco police department began clearing encampments from the uc santa cruz campus. >> protesters upset about the conflict in gaza between hamas

and israel have been here on campus for weeks. the university says they've been asking protesters to leave, stop blocking access to the school to no avail. in a statement on friday, they defended their decision to move in saying it is imperative that we restore full access to our campus and and other on lawful. >> unsafe actions as demonstrators continued to disrupt campus operations and threaten safety, even delaying access of emergency vehicles. it was impossible to do so without law enforcement intervention. the school also says that multiple arrests have been made. but as of midday friday, it's unknown exactly how many people have been taken into custody around 100 protesters remained on scene after being pushed back by police. they say the school has gone too far. so what's the mood amongst everybody right the mood is really, really we're we're quite frankly, were furious. >> people are out there. they're yelling and the screaming because this enormous violation of her constitutional rights and a

overboard reaction in terms the level of brutality that we're witnessing by late morning. most of the encampments have been removed. it's unclear how long law enforcement will remain on scene. protesters told kron 4 that they are going to stay now with access to campus being limited on friday, all classes were held remotely. but for now in santa cruz, charles clifford kron, 4 news. hundreds of faith leaders from across california are in san francisco today. pray for peace in gaza. that event held outside senator alex padilla is office also part of a demonstration calling on the senator >> to vote against what organizers say is u.s. complicity in the killing happening in gaza for those participating. they say that they're calling on the senator because he voted in favor of additional military weapons to be sent to israel. today's protest comes after the recent israeli air strikes in rafah that killed at least 37 palestinians as the military. they're targeted. 2 senior hamas militants. those participating hope this gathering will lead to a meeting with the senator to

discuss the release of all the hostages on both of this conflict as well as an immediate cease-fire. happening later today, protesters plan to rally in front of the san francisco federal building in solidarity with the people of rafah. this is video of a previous protest at the same location back in jet in february, rather. today's protest is scheduled to start at 5. the group organizing the event is demanding the u.s. imposed an arms embargo with israel. the bay area mural program orban is holding a fundraiser tonight to raise money and awareness for the continued war in gaza. the event will have live music and share our work to raise money for the cause of freedom from flotilla. the goal is to send bay area residents along with supplies on a fleet of boats to help with relief efforts in gaza. the fundraiser for beta gaza will be from 6 to 10 tonight at oakland location on san pablo avenue. and today president joe biden announced a new cease-fire proposal by

israel. his plan is built in 3 phases. they include a complete cease-fire for 6 weeks and the release of more hostages eventually leading to the release of all the remaining hostages and the permanent removal of israeli troops from gaza. today, the president spoke directly to americans who have criticized the violence in gaza saying he is not okay with what's happening there. >> time too big and this new stage. hostages come home. for israel to be secure the suffering to stop. it's time for this war to end. >> biden also says hamas is no longer capable of carrying out another october 7th attack. he credits the israeli military for that. a big story we continue to follow. we're seeing dramatic reactions to the conviction. a former president donald trump just yesterday a new york jury found him guilty on all 34 felony charges for his involvement in a hush money scheme. washington, d.c.,

correspondent hannah brandt has more on that verdict. >> former president donald trump is wasting no time trying to control the fallout here today. he gave a fiery speech where he attacked the judge, the witnesses and the guilty verdict. it was a rigged trial in an angry tirade at trump tower. former president donald trump repeated his claims of innocence just hours after a new york jury found him guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide a hush money payment. everything involved with standard. there was no crime both supporters and opponents rallied at trump tower after the historic verdict and from the white house. president biden also reacted to the decision the american press mall. >> but no one is above the law. >> was rear from he called out his political opponent for attacking the justice system reckless. it's dangerous. it's irresponsible for anyone to say this was read just because they don't like the verdict. the trial lasted over a month that included hours of testimony and dozens of

witnesses and documents. and it took the jury just 2 days of deliberation to reach their decision. it was a little quick that they actually do their homework they ask for the replay the testimony. georgetown law professor victoria nurse gives the jurors credit in the end, they came to a unanimous verdict. and i think that's quite significant. next come sentencing, which is scheduled for july 11. the penalties for these charges could range from fines to probation to jail time. that's up to the judge. and that is a difficult question for this judge. he has a lot of discretion, but the former president is promising to fight the verdict. we're going to be appealing this. >> scam the trump team is jumping right into campaign mode. the former president went to a fundraiser in manhattan last night and his campaign team sent out an e-mail blast calling him a political prisoner and asking for donations. >> in washington, i'm hannah brandt. >> well, meanwhile, trump will be in san francisco next thursday for a fundraiser co hosting that event are billionaire david sacks and his wife, jacqueline sacks, the ceo of children's clothing

line saying haven, that event will be held in pacific heights and trump's arrival will come a day after vice president kamala harris visits the city. she said to attend a fundraiser next wednesday that at manny's cafe the specific venue and time have not yet been or rather the specific time has not yet been revealed. she nannies cafe. oakland mayor sheng thao there in the east bay, oakland officials holding a flag ceremony to ring in pride month. the city holds off on official celebrations until september. but mayor thao said that she welcomes residents to support the rights of the lgbtq+ community in june, the rainbow flag will overlook the city from city hall a month long. san francisco also ringing in the beginning of pride month. city a huge rainbow flag. you see it right there over union square this morning across the bay area. cities celebrate lgbtq+ rights

withiannual festivals, parades and events. the san francisco pride parade is set for june 30th. all of that details are on sf pride dot pride is kicking off a day early in walnut creek today, city officials raised the pride flag outside city hall. tomorrow. the city holds 2 pride events including drag queen story time similar events held in other bay area. cities in the past have drawn some protesters. but as kron four's philippe djegal reports, city officials positive turn. >> for the second time in 2 years, the city of walnut creek will host drag queen story time plus scraps last year's inaugural event was held at the lecture center for the arts and kevin safina says it was a big hit. kids are very engaged. parents are happy. we have people coming to the problem again, not just one creek but from throughout the area. safina is the city's director of arts and recreation and says having preschoolers and early elementary school students listen to a drag. queen read

books is one from the city council's directive is offering programming that promotes diversity equity and inclusion. the message is tolerance >> and speaking to the community who really values this and making sure everyone feels welcome and belonging here. the reading will be held saturday at civic park assembly hall on civic drive from 11 in the morning until noon. it's the city's second pride event of the day. >> both happening across the street from the police department and city hall. that's where several times this year city council meetings have been disrupted by people spewing hate speech. >> and so theme is well aware that right-wing extremist groups have bombarded bay area drag queen story time events in the past. most notably in 2022, when the proud boys frightened children and their families at the san lorenzo library in castro valley. to the extent that we have people who have different opinions, we welcome that

kidnapping and murdering 12 year-old polly klass nearly 3 decades ago. >> will remain on death row. a judge denied a petition to recall the death sentence against richard alan davis. today his attorney cited changes in the law as well as governor gavin newsom putting a moratorium on the death penalty. well, recess tossie was covering this story for us and joins us live now from the newsroom with more details on what happened in court to resign. well, stephanie was a very tense morning in court for those gathered in a santa

clara courtroom. at issue, the sentence for richard alan davis. >> dave, a slip through the cracks. several decks decades ago after he kidnapped polly during a sleepover at her own home. sheriff's deputies helped him with his car, got stuck, not tying him to the murder. until months later, allen had a lengthy criminal record before he murder polly and those crimes revert to a sentencing happens. pence led to his death sentence. however, a recent bill changed enhancements, hence giving allen the chance at a re sentencing. the judge after some consideration denied his request. this is polly's father marc klass. >> hopefully hopefully it's over. you know, this is dominated. our lives certainly for the last couple of months are going tied up in knots. i've been very worried. i've been very anxious about 1996 when the jury recommended death from a judge sentenced him to death. believe i stood on very steps of poor health and said finally, this over

and we can move forward with our lives. yeah, there we are. 28 years later based on a new law. retroactively throws out special circumstances with about bringing some kind of closure to a case and that there can be no closure when they will imply >> coming up on kron, 4 news at 3 o'clock. we'll have more on this case and how marc klass says he and his family continue to try and find closure with this horrible tragedy in the newsroom. theresa stasi, back to stephanie theresa, thank you for your coverage. happening today, san francisco police are providing an update on a police shooting that took place in the bayview neighborhood. this is video from the citizen app of what that scene looks like last week. officers got a report of someone with a rifle near jennings street in carroll avenue. when police arrived, they found the suspect and one officer fired their gun. the suspect was not shot but was rushed to the hospital for non life-threatening injuries. as

deputies update will start in less than an hour at 3 o'clock. california highway patrol is investigating a deadly crash on highway one in palo alto. that crash happened just before 3 o'clock this morning. chp says a man driving an suv pulled over to the side of the highway to inspect the car issue. officers say the car suddenly drifted back into traffic. that's when a sedan hit the back of the car. the driver of the suv got out of his vehicle following the crash and was struck by a tractor that victim died at the scene. chp is working to find out the cause of the suv drifting back into oncoming traffic. and all lanes are now open on northbound highway. 17 south of santa cruz avenue in los gatos. this after a bus crash with at least 4 other cars in los gatos shortly after 7 this morning near the cats exit video showing some of the damage there. you can see one cars could completely smashed in. the highway patrol says a number of people were injured. the extent of the injuries remains unclear. chp says the crash forced a miles long back up. francisco's iconic anchor

brewing company has a new owner. we learned today at the founder and ceo of chobani has bought the company. hamdi ulukaya is a turkish billionaire who was a pioneer in the natural food movement. the terms of the agreement were not released. however, we have learned that purchase includes all of anchors assets, which includes the beers, trademark steam beer recipe, hill campus and all the brewing equipment and anchors to herro street warehouse facility brewing is regarded as a pioneer in the craft beer movement and operated in san francisco for 127 years before it was shut down by its previous owner last year. all right. switching gears now to talk a bit about the weather. just looking like a gorgeous tail there on the embarcadero, kyla. yeah, it is just consistently been really pretty. and the day today, lots of blue skies out there from the coast all the way inland. >> we're getting a little breezy in san francisco. you can see as we take a live look here at the transamerica pyramid. but what a day, what

a day when more wildly warm day out there before we've got a big cool down coming this weekend and a return of marine layer. >> however, that is short lived because next week we're going to see temperatures get even warmer. and we did this week and those of you inland are going wait a minute, really? let me get to that. let's start with where we are right now, which is very warm. san jose at 87 degrees. 91 in livermore, we're sitting at 66 in downtown san francisco, but you can see conquered up to 88 fairfield. 92 head up to the north bay nevado hitting 86 degrees santa rosa about 85 and yeah, if you take a look up to cloverdale, they're up in the 90's to their 91 degrees. so i mention we're getting a little breezy, particularly in san francisco. you can see at 22 miles per hour. but this will be again, our afternoon push of some of that onshore breeze that we've been getting so high pressure is still for the most part in control. but we've got this low pressure system that's approaching. >> the pacific northwest, it will bring rain to them but will knock down our temperatures as we head into the weekend. obviously today and tonight we're looking

pretty good, but you can kind start to see a little of that cloud cover way up in the top left-hand corner of your screen. there. that is an indication that that low pressure system eventually will be making it our way. so let me show you futurecast how this plays out. nice night out there tonight. that's about 9 o'clock tonight. tomorrow we are going to see the temperatures start to pull back as we start to see some of the slide. and this is saturday evening when i most of the cloud cover coming in. we'll have a little bit of marine layer presence out at the coast tomorrow. but saturday night into sunday, you can see definitely some possibility of drizzle happening along the coast as well. and even into monday. so saturday will be the sunnier day of the 2 sunday into monday will be pretty cool. here is what's happening, though, with temperature trends you can see here to take livermore as an example. we're going to cool down for the weekend through monday and then just go rocketing up in temperatures. and that is tuesday, wednesday and thursday. a quick look at your extended forecast shows you wednesday in particular looks to be the peak of the heat inland will will be flirting with triple digit heat. so we'll talk a little bit more

now, tesla's issuing a fix for more than 125,000 vehicles due to a malfunction, its seat belt warning system, the national highway traffic safety administration says the seat belt warning light and audible chime might not activate when the driver is unbelted. this affects certain makes of all tesla models except the cybertruck tesla will release an over the air software update in the coming weeks to fix this issue. and really for costco members today, costco will not be changing the price on its beloved hot dog combo anytime soon. costco's new chief financial officer confirming yesterday that the retailers hot dog and drink will stay at a buck 50 very affordable. the price has been untouched since 1975. rumors have suggested the price might change due to high inflation, but executives

say the price will remain unchanged for the time being. and for your health. new research says members of the lgbtq+ community have a higher risk of some types of cancers. the report from the american cancer society found those individuals are more likely to smoke drink alcohol deal with obesity. all of those factors do raise the risk for various forms of cancer. experts say the study says members of the lgbtq+ community are also at higher risk of sexually transmitted infections that can lead to cancers such as hiv and hpv. it should be noted that researchers did not look directly a cancer rates of the lgbtq+ communities but looked at risk factors and inferred higher cancer probabilities in their report. up next, what you need to know if you plan on taking part this weekend. plus, weeks after governor gavin newsom reveals his proposed state budget. lawmakers are speaking out. but first crews battling flames on the ground and in the air after a fire breaks

bay, a a barn rather at a petaluma farm is damaged after a fire. no chickens are people were harmed but smoke could be spotted from miles away. kron 4 sarah stinson reports. >> smoke from the fire here at the pedal loom egg farm could be seeing all the way down town, which had some worried about the chickens and the farm workers. well, i just turned the corner and there was this shot. it looks like a monster. thankfully, no chickens were inside. everyone is okay. >> o that's good. that's

really a large plume of smoke could be seen coming from a ated part of petaluma. i just saw dark clouds like that. >> okay. and there's no rain in the forecast. not sure about that. and then the thing came over my phone and then i knew a barn caught fire at petaluma egg farm on kavanaugh lane just after 2. >> the sonoma county sheriff's office used a helicopter to assist multiple fire agencies on the ground, putting out the flames and making sure the fire didn't spread. but the wind made their job harder was pushing the smoke right now on top of the other bar. and so. >> creating an immediate exposure to catch those on fire as well as the grass and the homes across the across the way. and so when not in our favor and had we been about a month later than this, it would better tremendously different story. fire crews were able to contain the fire to the barn. a spokesperson for petaluma egg farm says. >> the barn was recently remodeled and wasn't being

used. yes, that's a really so everybody's okay. and it was just the bar and the structure itself and the chickens are better. rough go of it. the last couple >> so yeah, they need a break. >> fire crews remain here at the farm to investigate the cause of the fire. the family that runs pedal in egg farm is working with investigators trying to figure out if this was arson or an accident. i'm sara stinson reporting in petaluma kron. 4 news. >> a former bay area college professor will have to spend more than 5 years in federal prison for arson derry, maine are pleaded guilty to 3 counts of arson in february. prosecutors say he set a series of fires in the shasta-trinity national forest in 2021. while crews battled the dixie fire maynor tart top criminology at sonoma state and santa clara university's. in a south bay. the men arrested after an assault at a vta station now faces an attempted murder charge. investigators releasing surveillance video of that

assault. we do want to warn you about this video might be difficult for some to watch. this was at the vta children's discovery museum station. investigators say alec or other andrew perez was seen wearing an armored vest when he attacked a man on the station platform. you can see perez going up to the man with a bike and immediately started to punch and kick him. the assault continues for some perez eventually runs off and barricades himself inside of a home before being arrested. the victim is identified as a 45 year-old man. they were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries, including some deep cuts. a jewelry store in the east bay is hit by robbers. newark police say at least a dozen people forced their way into bindi jewelers on new park mall road wednesday afternoon. the group shattered glass display cases and took off and multiple getaway cars. police are working to figure out the exact value of the jewelry stolen. they're asking anyone with information to please give them a call. california leaders are developing a plan

to address gun violence. state attorney general rob bonta among the officials at yesterday's round table discussion. they met with community leaders in the central valley working to bring attention to gun violence and prevent future shootings. the ag also sharing his own experience with gun violence as well with his daughter's school was put on lockdown because of an active shooter. >> and of course, as a parent. sends chills down your spine and fear. the worst. there was helpless 90 miles away, not knowing the situation course wonder what i could do. >> and no one was hurt in that instance. and looking ahead, attorney general bonta says he plans to keep advocating for so-called common sense gun laws and continue meeting with community members to come up with solutions. the state capitol, hundreds of crime victims gathered to demand. governor gavin newsom approve money for survivor resources and programs. and while

democratic leaders reached a budget deal, some are not quite on board. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports. >> more than 200 crime victim advocates demonstrating outside the state capitol. they're concerned governor gavin newsom's proposed budget will not invest in programs that they believe are crucial to help survivors of crime. everything from mental health services to legal assistance. how? >> the governor for him to do his job and for him to approve the project. >> that gives all of us. >> they say as a stance today, the governor's budget proposal lacks the funding needed to adequately help victims. it comes as the governor has said he may have no other choice but to either cut or limit funding for some programs that the state faces a projected multibillion-dollar deficit. we are here to demand that california step up to meet its rocks, responsibility to survivors while they are

concerned with the governor's budget proposal, they applauded legislative democratic leaders for coming out with their own budget proposal. assembly speaker robert remus and senate president pro tempore mike mcguire announced the proposal wednesday claiming it will not cut core services include it in their plan. 103 million dollar investment for crime victims support programs. means our advocacy is working yet. >> just after this. good morning, everybody. the assembly budget committee met to review the legislature's budget proposal, a proposal that calls for 2 billion more dollars in education and homelessness spending than the governor's proposal. in addition of that democratic leaders about their proposal will slash the governor's proposed cuts to state funding social services, including in-home care for eligible undocumented californians and cash aid for low income californians in the cow works program. we have ensured. >> at the budget is not balance most vulnerable populations but to balance the budget. democrats who came up with the plan are proposing 1 billion dollars in additional climate cuts and

1 billion dollars in additional prison cuts. the plan also calls for the state to accelerate a pause of some tax credits for large businesses. these are difficult choices we have to set priorities and created in actions because that is what this moment requires. but republicans say they're frustrated. the plan was negotiated only among democrats. seems right now that the budget is very focused on a political narrative on the political ideology. and sometimes california is just want to the government to solvent. >> and the programs that they actually care about that actually affect their kids affect their daily lives. that's what we need to focus on that. >> and of course, this is not a done deal. the senate budget committee still needs to take it up. and of course, the governor will ultimately have the final say. the newsom administration confirms he is reviewing the proposal reporting at the state capitol. a tonn wallace kron. 4 news. >> bart service between the 24th street mission and daly city stations will be suspended this weekend. that includes the glen park and balboa park stations. the

suspension will allow crews to make track improvements and clear nearby vegetation. free bus rides will be available between the stations. travelers are advised to expect delays of 30 minutes for those stations. and preparations are underway for the largest greek festival in the south bay. the san jose event starts today on davis street near the saint nicholas greek orthodox church doors open at 5. local greek businesses will sell handmade goods and dishes made with homemade recipes like thing, isn't that look good? we've got a chance to speak with a volunteer who said that they are ready to show people, greek hospitality the creek culture. i think they're very hospitable. their houses or >> whatever you meet them, they're always welcome. and if got some of this house that all with that to offer that quick >> entry for the festival will cost you 5 bucks and children under 12. get in for free. o

let's talk about our forecast as we take a live look outside at the city of san francisco. could see it on the right hand side there and, you know, kind of like a greek festival in san jose. that was sounding pretty good. how's the weather? look, tell you, i am not creek, but i am greek when it comes the food, the festival. that's so much fun. i enjoyed that. that would be a great thing to do this weekend. i think the weather be pretty good for it, although it's going to be a lot cooler. >> then we've had today and yesterday, that's for sure. temperatures will be topping out in the 70's through saturday sunday and even monday. so a big difference as we start to see that low pressure system to our north and west have an influence on our weather. having said that, i think that's just fine to head out to greek festival, right? enjoy that. i think sunday will be the cloudier day of the 2. so just be prepared for that. if you have outdoor plans, saturday is the better day right now. obviously looking great skies are nice and clear as we zoom out. but you do see that low pressure system there it is. and eventually it's going to start to move across and bring some clouds our way tonight. i think we'll just see a little coastal cloud, coastal marine layer. and then as we get to tomorrow, we'll start to see a little bit more fog in the
