3:19 pm
in the last hour. now at 23 miles per hour in san francisco. check out oakland now. 28 miles per hour. so just be mindful of that. if you're driving across any of our bridges, you're probably going to be feeling that low pressure system is to our north and west and it is going to help to kind of moderate this high pressure and bumped out of the way for a few days before the high pressure kind of roars back in. so can see right now, obviously really nice blue skies, but there is a little marine layer down there down in monterey bay area. and that will be building back in 70 show. you what happens as we go through tonight. should be a really nice night. if you're headed out as we head into saturday, the first part of the day starts with some sunshine. and once we kick the marine layer in the morning and then you can see saturday night, we really start to see some heavier clouds are role and they stick with us into monday, that could mean some coastal drizzle as well. but for the most part, the rain stays to the north of us. but check this out. temperature trends i'm using livermore as an example here. obviously warm today. we're cooling it down for saturday sunday, monday. but look what happens

>> we're seeing dramatic reactions to the conviction of former president donald trump. yesterday, a new york jury found him guilty on all 34 felony charges for his involvement in a hush money scheme. our washington, d.c., correspondent hannah brandt has more on the verdict. >> former president donald trump is wasting no time trying to control the fallout here today. he gave a fiery speech where he attacked the

judge, the witnesses and the guilty verdict. it was a rigged trial in an angry tirade at trump tower. former president donald trump repeated his claims of innocence just hours after a new york jury found him guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide a hush money payment. everything involved with standard. there was no crime both supporters and opponents rallied at trump tower after the historic verdict and from the white house. president biden also reacted to the decision the american press mall. >> but no one is above the law. >> was rear from he called out his political opponent for attacking the justice system reckless. it's dangerous. it's irresponsible for anyone to say this was read just because they don't like the verdict. the trial lasted over a month that included hours of testimony and dozens of witnesses and documents. and it took the jury just 2 days of deliberation to reach their decision. it was a little quick that they actually do their homework and they ask for the replay of the

testimony. georgetown law professor victoria nurse gives the jurors credit in the end, they came to a unanimous verdict and i think that's quite significant. next come sentencing, which is scheduled for july 11. the penalties for these charges could range from fines to probation to jail time. that's up to the judge. and that is a difficult question for this judge. he has a lot of discretion, but the former president is promising to fight the verdict. we're going to be appealing this. >> scam the trump team is jumping right into campaign mode. the former president went to a fundraiser in manhattan last night and his campaign team sent out an e-mail blast calling him a political prisoner and asking for donations. >> in washington, i'm hannah brandt. >> and joining us live now to break down mister trump's post verdict remarks is political science professor at sonoma state university. david mcewan. good afternoon to professor. >> good afternoon. happy friday. >> happy friday to you. and of course, a very busy for all of us who are touched by this news. now, of course, professor, this is a historic moment. never in american
3:31 pm
history. have we had a former president convicted of criminal charges? we know that mister trump this morning, he deflected a lot of responsibility. he called this trial raved a scam. among other things, do those remarks surprise you given what we've seen during the trump presidency? >> no, i i don't think there's much surprising here about the republican this is going to be donald trump and gop revenge they're going to go into campaign mode. that's that's correct. they have a fundraiser in san francisco next wednesday, june 6. the vice president, kamala harris, also as a fundraiser going on then. but also between now and sentencing july. 11th, you have first debate on june 27th. but between now and someone is probably going to who was on the jury. those folks on the jury will then be docks to they'll out there will be elements of this that are going to be on the offensive. so in terms of the horse that brung donald trump, right, social media in terms
3:32 pm
kind of going forward and being really aggressive. that's not going to change and you're not going to see that even his republican allies who doubled down on today in the last 24 48 hours and you're also going to see record amounts of money raised sure they raise 35 million in the last 24 hours, but they're going to raise probably closer to by the time we get to monday and start things next week. so they're going to fully offensive and that shouldn't change anytime soon. >> when do you anticipate news of this conviction to movs the needle long undecided voters in favor of trump or president biden. >> yes, i think one thing that happens is on the we have voters that are a little bit purple little bit blue. these purple people. look, these these red kind of voters blue somewhere in there, those folks in the middle, they'll move on the margins and then move in states like pennsylvania, the move in bucks they'll move in places like michigan, wisconsin, georgia and nevada. that could be a problem for them in november. but there's a long time between now and the
3:33 pm
election 157 days from now. a lot that can happen. and obviously that will the donald trump gop convention on july 15th 4 short days sentencing on july. 11th. >> all right. you're touching on the timeline, which is the next point. i want to bring up all signs to suggest that trump does plan to appeal the verdict. but this is something that's not going to happen overnight. even the sentencing is not set to happen for several weeks, which you alluded to earlier. so can you walk us through a timeline of what you think is likely to happen next? >> yeah, i mean, look, he has 30 to put forward a formal document that he's going to feel this. they won't take that long. obviously he's going to raise money early often. but what's interesting is that and hannah alluded to this in her kind of setup piece. their schedule is a little bit like here for the next week, obviously coming to california on wednesday. but what we now and then they don't they didn't have a lot schedule. they have things schedule online, but they don't have these massive rallies and events. so they're going to have turn that up, if
3:34 pm
you will, to take advantage of the exposure that they have because also what you saw in this kind of destroying in all over the map press conference that he gave today. we didn't take any questions from the press. he was also on the offensive end, talked about what they're going to do in that disjointed come kind of a press conference. he also is the first time he's had national cameras in front of in toto for for a week. he doesn't have moving forward and he's going to have to get that as well. he's going get those cameras and find moments where you can get on the campaign trail and get some attention. before not just his voters, but those purple people that we're always talking about. and i love that you brought up the topic of press coverage. professor, it's been fascinating just watching the media's coverage of this event. >> during trump's remarks today, cnn and msnbc. they both cut away in the middle of his announcement. fox news. no surprise. they ran the remarks in full. so can you provide some color and perspective on these different coverage approaches, if you will?
3:35 pm
>> yeah. so as someone who you know, lives politics. 24 by 7, i read this stuff. i watch the staff across all of the go back and look at it and try to engage with across various mediums. when you do that, what you see is that there is this kind built real big difference in character and what goes on and that coverage is hugely important. not just the people in the silos of their beliefs, whether they're on the left or the right. but what is happening in terms of coverage. so this is where the media's role becomes hugely important in terms of news events, what those mean and what this looks like. and when you're assaulting the legitimacy of a jury of your peers and what that looks like. that signals not in political science, but in real world politics. why this is such a big deal. this is a tectonic shift, a shift between not red-and-blue but between those who believe in the rule of law and you know, we stand for something and those that are willing to kind of fly by the seat of their pants and donald trump is willing to kind of fly by the seat of his pants about what goes on. he throws away the
3:36 pm
teleprompter and he just it about a lot of disconnected things today. and that's a fatigue factor. and so how you cover that? how you talk about that is really rich and important. and that is what people will pay attention to after the conventions. and after the debate, it's the coverage of those events and how we talk about those events that matter more than the actual events themselves the the comments that are made because most people have their lives. really, they're not doing this. 24 by 7 might be like me. >> very good, professor, noah, just to wrap things up here. this is, of course. >> uncharted territory for journalists, political analysts, anyone covering and working to understand this event. but perhaps you can offer perspective on this next question. and that can a convicted felon run for president? >> absolutely. i mean, the constitution is silent about this. the one issue could bes. 78 years old. he's never been convicted of anything before. you know, he probably gets a
3:37 pm
suspended sentence. so does that mean u.s. to check in with his probation officer? what you talking will talk to his once a week that you've got those peo once a month and then what does he do can go out on the campaign trail or not, but he can serve as he can run. he can serve as president. the constitution is silent on this. it's a citizenship requirement. it's a requirement for age. it's really quite a wide ranging and then he can pardon himself because the state level case. but obviously they're all those federal that are coming down the pike in the way things are going in florida with judge cannon. that case isn't going to be heard probably 2028. so we've got a long way to go here. and we have a long way to go in this election and pass this election because as a your viewers now, this election doesn't end even on november 5th that there's going to regardless what happens in the 2.70 electoral college count and what happens in the popular vote. there's going to consequences even beyond that if he loses, he doesn't lose with grace. and that's one thing we know about donald trump. >> alright, sonoma state university professor of political science, david
3:38 pm
mcewan, thank you so much for your insight on this historic moment. we appreciate it. all right. meanwhile, trump will be in san francisco as the professor just mentioned next thursday for a fundraiser co-hosting that event are billionaire david sacks and his wife, jacqueline sacks, the ceo of children's clothing line, safe haven. the event will be held in pacific heights and trump's arrival will come a day after vice president kamala harris visits the city. she said to attend a fundraiser next wednesday at manny's cafe. the specific time has not yet been revealed. bill introduced in the legislature seeks to give prosecutors more time to charge someone with domestic violence. state law allows prosecutors to file charges up to 5 years after an alleged domestic violence incident has taken place. but the new proposal would extend that time frame by several years. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports. >> well, the state senator who authored this bill says it's all about protecting victims and holding perpetrators accountable to victims out there. i wanted to understand that we are fighting every day
3:39 pm
to make sure that you are state. that's the message states. senator susan rubio baldwin park says she sending with her bill sb 690, if signed into law. the legislation would extend the statute of limitations in domestic violence cases, giving prosecutors more time to charge domestic violence suspects as it stands today. state law allows prosecutors to charge someone up to 5 years after an alleged domestic violence incident took place but should sb 690, be signed. prosecutors will be allowed to chart some up to 15 years after that incident. this will be victims of time too, to breathe. 2 x help seek help and do put all their affairs in order in order to a situation safety, a survivor herself. rubio says this issue is especially important to her. she was the state senator behind the 2019 law that increased the domestic violence statute of limitations to its current 5 years. she says after meeting with countless survivors, she believes 5 years is not enough. she also says this
3:40 pm
recently released video showing music mogul sean diddy combs punching and kicking ex-girlfriend in 2016. makes it clear why survivors are afraid to speak out. combs apologized after the video was released. >> i make no exouses a view on that video inexcusable. but as california last dance day because combs incident took place more than 5 years ago. >> the statute of limitations has now expired meaning too much time already passed to file charges. we understand that job. the trauma, the victims feel. >> it's not easy and it takes an average of 8 to 10 years for victims to get over that trauma. so michael is to give victims a little bit more time heal. get help. make sure that their state but one pray that their families are safe. the bill already received bipartisan support from the state senate. but the proposal does face opposition from the california public defenders association. >> who wrote this in part, quote, the extension of the statute of limitations will
