4:06 pm
evening. and then that should start to relent a little bit, too. but this is kind of the big stories that we're going to see this move in. and we really haven't seen it quite to this degree. and in a bit here. so by 11 o'clock notice that we've got a lot of that marine layer presence and also it means we wake up cloudy on our saturday, cloudy and cooler. that will be the theme for the weekend. but it doesn't last. so we'll have more to talk about that later. but tonight, it's all about the increasing clouds. temperatures will be in the 50's and as i mentioned, will be looking out for some of that overnight fog as well. live look outside here at the embarcadero. you can see just a little bit of a breeze here in san francisco, folks making their way out and about to get ready to enjoy the evening. i highly recommend taking a jacket with you if you're headed out and about tonight in san francisco because we are going to feel that marine layer and that breeze is already sicking up. i'll be back in a little bit with your seven-day forecast. all right, governor gavin newsom in san francisco announcing the freedom to marry ballot initiative california voters in november will have an opportunity to ensure the state's constitution reflects.

4:08 pm
to do all they can to protect marriage equality. that's what this initiative represents. it's a recognition again of the urgency of the moment. the moment. >> we are living in and states are in the front lines of those rights battles. and that's why it's imperative. but states like california step up and assert themselves at this critical time. >> and make clear that no matter what happens, california it's going to stand for equality and he's going to stand up for marriage. voters will get a chance to weigh in on the ballot initiative. >> during the general election in november. but for now in san francisco, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> the ballot already qualified for the with bipartisan support from the legislature. but the california family council is opposed citing concerns of the ballot's language is too vague. >> under this new law, there would be no limit to the number of people who could get married the age of people who could get married or did the genetic relationship between

4:11 pm
decision ended a yearlong legal battle over the historic berkeley landmark. some opponents had argued that the historic park should be preserved. uc berkeley says now that all legal barriers are clear, it will proceed with constructing student housing on the site with support from the city. the berkeley mayor today noting that the plan for the site includes over 2 acres of public open space. this will provide permanent housing for the needy is people are community. >> people that are currently living on the streets. and i think that's really a great resolution due to the fact that people's party long been place of people sought refuge permanent homes for people at pittsburgh. >> the court noted that berkeley provides housing to the lowest percentage of students compared to other schools in the uc system. today, hundreds of people in san francisco's chinatown were able to pick up free bags of food. >> thanks to dozens of volunteers. 5,000 bags were made available to folks in
4:12 pm

4:13 pm
4:14 pm
4:15 pm
>> cars. biggest stars are roaring their way into one country roaring. they are crossed for his. erin wilson joins now live from the sonoma raceway hi, aaron. >> i think the warning is right. you may be able hear some of rowing just to my right because right now the general tire 200 race actually taking place as we speak. now that the first rate on the docket, course, that is so much now here for the fans to see over the weekend. obviously it's all leading up to the big one. the cup series that's on sunday. we have a big name that you're about to hear from because he is up for in due for a win. he doesn't have one this season. and of course he's trying talking about martin truex junior now very familiar with this
4:16 pm
raceway. he's won here 4 times in his career. the first one coming back in 2013, his latest and 2023 now last year. that was when he had most recent win here at the sonoma raceway with so far this season not able to do it day that he is ranked 34 but in order to solidify a spot in the playoff, he just needs a win in so far this season. like i just mentioned, he's winless. there's a lot of right riding on the line for a win tonight for on sunday. virtue julia being crowned a champion. he would tie with jeff gordon, one of the all-time greats he would tie with him at the sonoma raceway for 5 wins. if he's able to secure that win be a champion sunday. now, like i we spoke to truex junior earlier today. i asked him specifically about the raceway because it freshly paved for the first time in 23 years in completion. and i asked how can this a picture race and take a listen to what he had to say. >> yeah, it's definitely going to be a lot different than
4:17 pm
it's been. you know, i you know, every time for as long as i can remember, you come to snowman. you think? you know, we're now track tire wear. the approach is a lot different than what it is now. now it's really going to be, you know, i'm pretty much qualifying laps every last with with the tires that don't wear out or go really fall off much so. >> totally different approach. i think than what we've done here at home. it, you know, snow in the past. but with that being said, you know, we test out here. i felt good about it. it's still the same new challenges, same course. and hopefully we you know, we figure and go back win number 5 here. >> now, of course, now, of course, there's someone else who had to go up against those same challenges. when we talk about the repaving, i'm joined now by met benedetto, obviously, you will be racing tomorrow in the xfinity series. you may have seen the what are you expecting point tomorrow during the during a
4:18 pm
race in the xfinity series. >> man, it's a lot different one of coast of 2 home race for me which is needed group in grass valley, california, track a ton of times in the cup series a lot. and it was so different on a rebate, you know, not accustomed to it completely. driving style and how we typically not this racetrack, but it's still the same fun, really technical road course. it always baton. great racing in the fans are always awesome here. so i'm excited to be here. when you did your practice practice run through today. how did it feel out there? man, you're carrying way more speed than we're used to. so when against like you had to kind of program yourself from everything that i've time, you know, men, todd and taught myself over all the years here really actually more difficult than people may think like adjusting to track that you're so used to so many times like changing i oh, man, we've got to carry 7 more miles an hour to this part of the corner. i'm used to like really tiptoeing the throttle. now. it's got lots of grim. i'm
4:19 pm
just curious to see how that affects the traffic and the actual racing itself tomorrow. yemen, other things expect with all the new repayment in the new down of the 11 curve. how do you think about that? what do you feel about having to maneuver without the tire while actually just a wall that doesn't have, you know, any give in the i i clifton bump that tire barrier that they used to have before. a couple times man. it was a lot more treacherous having a lot, especially it's not like perfectly round. and there's parts that kind of stick out a little bit more. let's all just little new things that people may think like. i'm not a big deal, but it actually changes. you know, a lot of our roads and things that we've got to be more careful on. we've got to be wary to make sure when you're in traffic that no, not somebody stuff you into that wall on front tire out your hands. live, right. and you race here quite a few times in your career. >> just being from not so far from here. what's it like racing in sonoma? just overarching look at it being out here in the sonoma well,
4:20 pm
one as we can see today is always a beautiful here. so that's really nice. my family, you know, comes to this race, a great memory that i have here is 2019. i was driving for le vine. family racing. >> in the cup series and we had a 4th place finish here. we had a really fast car finished 4th in a sign a lot of good success in road courses and good memories of this place. so, yeah, i'd like to let you know, we're a small growing team with viking motorsports. how we got rate rate is recycling on board. recycle materials. so see partners that are coming on board. you know, as we're growing, this team looking for a good, solid run. but i'm excited yeah. here at home track. i'm excited to see. it is my first time actually watching person that being what's your mindset headed into? this was my last question for you. i just want to know where you're headed into this one, knowing that you want to get a win. and the xfinity series, course, establish name in the nascar racing. of course, as you've done so far, the yeah, you my goals are, of course we're
4:21 pm
racers. we all want to go out there and you know, i also have to be realistic to where a small, you know, growing team with big plans for the future about where this team is only playing around a few races part time. and then they decided, you know, my team owners non sackett and suzanne all and they decide to run, turn this into a full-time operations. so really in a state of growth. so to answer question, a realistic expectations would be just have a solid finish first qualified in the race because we're not locked in. so that puts us in a, you know, high-pressure situation. but on top of that, let's go one to be around. smart, clean race finished in the top 20, have a solid day because this, you know, all that come together, kind of like it did come together in the nick of time. that being thank you so much for joining and i'm so excited to see you. be on the lookout for number. 38 up there because he will be out there raising you just heard is golden. >> promise it's something fear being out here at the sonoma raceway. matt, thank you so much for joining thank you so much. thank all right, guys, toss it back to you guys in
4:22 pm
the city looking live at this number. a we notice you're wearing those big here. you protectors and matching your outfit, too. good going. get? yeah, you know me and happens, i have to keep a match. you know me, protect your hearing i think just dialed in. he's always said that was fun. you can see the wind there at the track as we come. >> back here to san francisco where you don't have the hard to even see what the wind is doing. guess that you can see the flag there bit blowing in the wind. but what a difference a 20 miles or highland. kind of a welcome sight. i got >> you know, that's the thing, right? considering the week we've had it is a welcome sight. obviously, we've got a mix of a little said in some spots. san jose still pretty sunny out there. and you can see mount tam, we've really got the marine layer showing up as it's starting to roll in temperatures starting to be affected by this, too, or just a 56 out of half moon bay. but you see some 70's in san jose and also in dublin. we're at
4:23 pm
61 in downtown san francisco. nevado still a little warm up there at 81 degrees at this hour. so it's interesting when we look at this difference between temperatures for 24 hours ago to now, because you look at concord spa pick up to 92 yesterday. 10 degrees cooler. so the spots where the warmest are now, the ones in cool down the most. in fact, we warmed up a little bit in san francisco. this is that mount tam cam that show you that marine layer on the moon. if you really look at kind of see it rolling. so today, obviously we're still warm inland. these are inland temperatures as we go through the weekend drop it down a few more degrees. but we've got more warmth on the other side of that to the question is what's going on there? right? and i'll show you, we've got marine layer building in right now. we've got a little low pressure to our north and our west. but behind that, you can't really see that yet is more high-pressure, another ridge that's going to roll in. so that happens we get into monday here comes and that builds in. now. it doesn't look like it's going to be as warm as what we just went through. having said that, it will be above average. so take
4:24 pm
a look at your weekend, right? we've got low 80's inland and then we head into next week. we're talking low to mid almost mid-nineties monday, tuesday, wednesday and then it will pull back again to the 80's thursday and friday. so a little bit of a seesaw with the temperatures over the next few days. we catch a break when we head towards the weekend. thanks, kyla. still ahead, the fda recalling so to serve across california restaurant where they were deemed too dangerous to drink. >> plus, juneteenth celebrations taking over san francisco this weekend. what you need to know about the parade route and street closures. keep it for news at 4. we'll be right back.
4:25 pm
4:26 pm
4:27 pm
>> having this weekend, juneteenth celebrations begin in the bay area tomorrow. san francisco will be hosting its francisco will be hosting its juneteenth parade an festival. the parade will kick off at 11 o'clock in the morning on market and spirits streets. it will the and are down market to 8 street. and if you are in the city, muni is warning that there will be several road closures here they are. these closures begin tomorrow morning and then the into the afternoon, many also wants people to know that several routes will be impacted. the parade commemorates the emancipation of enslaved black americans. this is video from last year's inaugural parade. there. we caught up with the executive director of the san francisco human rights commission about the importance of the celebration and what people can expect. >> thousands of people registered for the festival and we hope that they come early and watch the community members, the the pageant winners little miss and mister juneteenth that they get to
4:28 pm
see the cars that they go and join the block parties. but we've seen tremendous growth from last year to this year. and you consider the how many other parades the city has that have been happening for decades. and to finally have this one that centers black culture. is pretty special. the real struggle, i think to some degree is people who may say, well, everybody, all the black people left san francisco. why would you do this parade here? and i think that's even more reason to do it is to say that we are committed to whether it's 1 1000 or 100,000 that we are committed to addressing the disparities and some of the harm that's continued to be done, where people have felt unwelcome here. and so doing this parade for me says we want folks to realize that they're welcome here. >> the festival will begin at noon at civic center plaza and it will run until 06:00pm more than 10,000 people are expected to attend for more information on events this month. you can check out the san francisco juneteenth website. and we have a
4:29 pm
complete list of juneteenth celebrations here in the bay. just scan this qr code will take you directly to the juneteenth section of our website at kron 4 dot com. >> coming up, we break down the latest numbers in last month's job report. what unemployment rates look like across the country. plus, the first ever documented death from a black bear in california. what we know about the fatal encounter and this year foothills and then a bill targeting those junk fees on event, tickets, hotels, food deliveries and the like, maybe that's not going to happen with a new proposal that's been put forward that would allow those surcharges
4:30 pm
4:31 pm
4:32 pm
>> the new state law targets so-called junk fees, but businesses, it goes into effect next month. but there is a proposal now that would allow restaurants to keep attacking those surcharges if they reveal the cost ahead of time. reporter erin myers has details. >> the new law goes into effect on july. first require all in pricing. so that means no hidden charges or fees that you find out about later. but there may be some leeway for restaurants, but let's start with that new law senate bill. 478 makes it illegal for businesses to advertise our list, a price for goods or service. that doesn't include all of the fees and charges associated with it other than tax and shipping costs. oftentimes they are hitting season, which is stellar, uses a low price to attract the customer and then disclose additional fees in smaller print reveals additional charges later in the buying
4:33 pm
process. you see this with event tickets, hotels and lodging, restaurants and food delivery. the honest pricing laws meant to protect consumers from deceptive price advertising by showing the all-in price for goods and services up front before getting the bill. this makes it easier for consumers to compare prices between merchants. now a new proposal would make an exception for restaurants. it would allow restaurants to continue to add see such a surcharges and mandatory gratuities. as long as the charges are revealed upfront clearly and conspicuously this instead of using those all in prices, those extra charges allow restaurants to make contributions to workers, health care and other employee benefits. there had been some confusion as initially the state attorney general's office said restaurants could keep surcharges. but later said charges had to be included in the prices on the menu. this proposal would clarify that. as for the proposal, this is what people this morning had to say. of course, i want restaurant workers to get. >> but they're supposed to getting in all the things like that. so i think 100% if it's written on the menu. shown out
4:34 pm
to the customer, i think i'm completely ok with that. but yeah, i think it's when it's hidden from you. and it just gets frustrating as a customer of the new law doesn't require businesses to change their prices. it just makes it easier for consumers to know what they're paying up front. >> and that was erin myers reporting for us. man was arrested after police say he was selling drugs on social media to children in santa rosa. police say 32 year-old, diaz was selling marijuana, thc, vape pens, mushrooms, and cocaine to teenagers. they say he would use instagram, snap chat and telegram to reach the kids and use cash app and venmo for payment. police say last month they spotted the as picking up a student in the back of a sonoma county high school to give them drugs. saw officers later detained him during a traffic stop during a search warrant at the suspect's home. police say
4:35 pm
they also found several guns, including an ar 15 assault weapon. he was booked into jail on several felonies. >> the crown fire that forced evacuations near tracy earlier this week is now 100% contained. it burned 14,000 acres since it started on saturday afternoon. crews are now out there looking into what caused this fire. the crystal fire in napa county. that is now 95% contained 60 acres burning. the fire started wednesday afternoon near saint 4 firefighters are in the hospital for heat-related conditions. >> whether time here as we get a live look outside, we had some real heat middle of this week, but things have changed dramatically as we see all the winds in san francisco's embarcadero area. things are. >> much cooler. yeah. kathy trafton joining us now live in the studio to talk about that. >> indeed, big dramatic changes sometimes can be a good thing after the exceedingly hot temperatures earlier this week, it has
4:36 pm
cooled down and look how breezy it is. i was downtown today and i walked across the street, my hair just straight up. it was crazy. we've got get the flags flapping. we got the palm fronds moving. all the leaves are wrestling. and yet, you know, the reports of wind not terribly impressive 9 miles per hour coming through the golden gate, picking up into fairfield at 26 miles per hour. so we see some winds basically with an onshore trajectory and that keeps things cool along the entire california coast 50's 60's. that's great. but you know how to spell the temperatures in the center of state right now. h ot bakersfield 103, fresno, 102 that we have lost the heat advisories across the bay area and even the excessive heat e been scaled back now you see in the deserts of southern california into the parts of the central valley, the san joaquin valley, excessive heat continues there. but for much milder, even though you see some highs right now in the 80's in the
4:37 pm
in eastern, most parts of the east bay. still, that's a lot cooler than yesterday. antioch, 82 livermore. 83. that is about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. at this hour. and temperatures right along the california coastline in san francisco. a little bit warmer than yesterday. low pressure is starting to affect our weather. but high pressure will be coming back. so i've got the extended forecast coming up. all right, a judge dismisses several state charges against paul pelosi's attacker who was convicted in federal court. >> last month following that federal conviction, state prosecutors brought their own case against david de pap, but his public defender says that the state trial represents double jeopardy for the pap in response. the judge on thursday dismissed state charges of attempted murder, elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon. but to still faces charges including false imprisonment, residential burglary, threatening a family
4:38 pm
member of a public official as well as aggravated kidnapping. those charges were not part of the federal trial. pap has pleaded not guilty to all those charges. today marks the 5th day of hunter biden's federal gun trial just a short time ago, prosecutors rested their case against the president says son, president biden, there this morning. they heard brief testimony from 2 final witnesses, fbi chemist and a dea drug expert. defense lawyers say that they present 2 or 3 witnesses when they have 2 or 3 witnesses when they present their case not known if hunter biden will be taking the stand. he's facing felony charges of buying and owning a gun while on illegal drugs. biden has pleaded not guilty to all these charges. president biden telling abc news that he will not pardon hunter biden if the younger biden is found guilty. >> u.s. coast guard has called off the search for 3 suspected drug smugglers who went

overboard during a shoot out in the ocean north of venezuela. american service members were aboard a dutch navy vessel in the caribbean when they tried to stop a suspected drug smuggling boat coast guard officers say they had to open fire in defense when the other ship tried to ram a nearby boat. the smugglers boat caught fire soak and the search for 3 people who went overboard was eventually called off the u.s. coast guard was able to recover. they say 63 million dollars worth of cocaine and offload that in florida this week. dollar general is removing more of its things that are getting stolen all the time as well as self-checkout systems trying combat theft. the chain is now getting rid of frequently stolen merchandise in closing self-checkout at 12,000 stores across the country. dollar general has already removed self-checkout registers from 300 stores facing the largest
4:40 pm
issues with theft and the company will continue their removal plan throughout almost all of their stores. they say dollar general's latest decision follows similar moves by walmart and target. >> the new jobs report is out and it shows employers added more jobs last month and more people were unemployed. our washington correspondent maddie beer-temple reports now on the latest report. >> the white house touting 272,000 new jobs in may, a stronger than expected report after employers scaled back hiring in april. biden job market once again over perform economic adviser jared bernstein also defended the uptick in unemployment from 3.9 to 4%. it's the first time in more than 2 years. the jobless rate hit 4%. 3.9 for, you know, really is and isn't all that different? what it means. >> is that not only are their consistent job opportunities, but the jobs are paying more. we saw wages go over 4%.
4:41 pm
>> analysts say the report likely means interest rates won't go down when the federal reserve meets next week. keeping payments high for things like your mortgage and car loans. if we see more progress with inflation, it's possible that the federal reserve begins to cut interest rates this fall. we have a lot of data to get through before that economic analyst with bankrate mark hamrick says overall the job report shows signs of a resilient economy. >> but even with wage growth, helping many americans, inflation is still a challenge. real wages are rising, but people know dollars offering tremendous challenges with affordability. the industries that saw the biggest job gains in may were in health care, government and hospitality in washington. i'm maddie beer-temple. for your health this afternoon. the fda is recalling 4 popular soft drinks made by the >> charles. but again, company, the drinks aren't sold directly to consumers, but our concentrates that
